- In this video we take a look at the genuine Land Rover Defender accessory undershield. This replaces the plastic tow eye with a thick aluminium skid plate / undertray on the front bumper of the new Land Rover Defender. The Land Rover part number for this item is VPLEP0436
Wow - nice to see some metal bits!
Looking good especially with the red contrast and the black textured bumper trim finish.
Hi - yes the red as initially only to help make it clear on the video... but if looks like of cool !
Love the red peaking through
Usually on skid plates the bolt heads are recessed so they don’t get ground down when off road
Looks good with the raptor liner
Yes for all the effort some countersunk recessed bolts would have been nice !
Another fantastic DIY video Simon. Thanks. How about a side step install video? Ive seen mixed solutions for this, one guy says you have to cut away plastic underneath, and others say there will be no cutting. Continue to make great videos.
The steps are on the workshop floor.... nearly there !
I like it! And it's looking good!
Hi 👋 this is a great 👍 to more protect under stop 🛑 damages when go on off road . It’s worth spending extra money 💰.
Thanks 🙏
Absolutely!!
Again, great content!! It seems a lot of work for something that should be standard. The shield and underbody protection on my FJ Cruiser is easy to take off and robust enough for touring. It’s disappointing to see LR cheap out on a vital piece of protection.
At least part of the reason is EU fleet average CO ratings which make it necessary for manufacturers to save every gram of extra weight they can on stock models to finesse the official test figures. Stupid rules but they are what they are.
Engre11 I didn’t factor that in. It will be interesting to see if they still use plastic in NA and Australian vehicles.
Great stuff, time for a hoist somewhere on site so Garry’s not working in the floor😆. For £800 LR fitted there will be aftermarket options real soon at a more reasonable cost hopefully.
Yes if we build another warehouse the workshop will be 2 storey so we can have a lift
I love watching these videos from this company ,but it is a concern of how the franchised dealers/workshops could do a modifications as well as you have . I saw a Defender 90 under going publicity shots whilst at Eastnor Castle Saturday Morning . But I do agree -Great to see some mettle being added .Kindest Regards
Hello, do you have a video of a aftermarket tow hich installation?
Looking at the changes you are making I think you can see basic design target for the Defender - a Chelsea tractor which those who want a real offroader can pay to upgrade
That's the one I mentioned in the previous video. Looks great and I think there will be a lot of us painting the bumper black. The black ties everything together. I also agree on painting the recovery hook. I am going to paint the front hook a reflective black.
Reflective black ?
@@L663 Yes, it is a clear reflective coat. It looks black during the day but at night when light shines on it, it reflects back.
Nice job. 👍. Might be good to add some thread protection to stop the bolts seizing up?
Yes some copper grease.... especially as i think we have some steel bolts into aluminium !
Binge watching every video and waiting for the glass tabletop top break...not yet. ;)
Me too - but so far all good - it works well to see object on the table as they are partially back lit if you see what i mean.
@@L663 You're doing a FANTASTIC job explaining and showing the details. I was just kidding. ;)
I wonder how strong the protection is should the vehicle ground, for example in soft sand. Its seems to me that the plate and bars may bend if the weight (mass) of the vehicle is supported by it. I would like to see a much stronger thicker plate option. But there again I will be using it for what it's intended in Africa.
😢 did u die? Africa in a new defender 😢
The plate looks good, but the tubular frame looks poor. Open ends on the tubular frame and poor paint finishing (from Land Rover) will mean rust within a very short time. The original mounting frame, and new mounting frame are similar and would cost similar amounts to manufacture, so makes it a great the upgraded frame was not fitted as standard to reduce the cost of the under guard. Should say the end result looks very good - great channel.
Hi - totally agree... and if they did fit the upgraded subframe as standard then there would be no need to strip down the front to upgrade. Glad you enjoy our somewhat unique style !
Is there a plastic replacement for the original plastic undershield but which exposes the recovery hook?
We are working on this !
@@L663 I think you'd sell loads. 👍🏻
Thanks Simon. I just picked up my new Defender having had winch fitted. I asked about access to towing eye as you’d always like to winch with 2:1 advantage. “Oh you have to take this plastic plate off” - massive faff. They think the under shield protector here may not be compatible with winch! Seems a bit crazy. Any thoughts or solutions to keep towing eye exposed with winch fitted? Thanks.
The "tow-hook" (tow-loop) is ridiculously low.
There should be 2 tow-hooks high up in the bumper , like those at the backside !
I guess the issue is pedestrian safety !
Great video, but unbelievable that the undershield does not come as standard. Buying a defender implies you need access to front recovery loop, well at least I will.
Totally agree - it feels like it should have been part of the car as standard !
Very interesting video - but very bad packing from JLR that allows the hooks to be damaged in transit. It needs properly designed packaging that protects the parts from being damaged by each other. But I would have thought that this should be a standard part from new and not an option - it is a DEFENDER after all !
Yes ..even if just the stronger metal part was fitted with a plastic cover... and the upgrade was to the aluminium...then at least you would not need to do the full strip down !
What size torx is that? Just realized I don't have anything that large and need to buy ASAP
Did the kit come with a shovel so you can dig down to find the recovery point? Great videos lads and I really appreciate all the hard work, but for me, it’s just highlighting what a load of crap this new vehicle is...
Thanks for the comments
That looks good. Goes some way to explain the £800 price on JLR's options list.
overall finish is nice... kind of think LR should have fitted the "subframe" as standard with a plastic cover and then if you wanted the aluminium you did not have to take the whole front end off..
powerfulukltd That would make perfect sense. I’d be reluctant to remove the bumper etc in case I damaged it.
Nice job! Thanks - I’m probably going to pick this up. Will you have it on your site any time soon?
Btw, any thoughts on asking gearshift paddles to standard models? I’ve a P300 S.
Hi I can see you have just found our channel ! I have a Velar steering wheel that i am going to try but i need to get into the CCF files to enable paddle shift... should be possible but need to try...
powerfulukltd Thanks for looking into it - the standard shift lever is not my favourite! Looking forward to paddles!
Hi there good idea painting that piece of metal you should also paint the towing eye yellow then it will stand out more
Ralph Cooling
That would have been a good idea when it was all stripped.
Excellent. Thanks for this.
I think it looks really good - definitely better functionally than the plastic cover and will make access much easier.
I’ll be interested to see what it looks like in silver against you new black front end - it might stick out a bit and maybe suit a silver front end more.
LR charges £840 for these (fitted?) so I’ll be interested to see how much they can be sourced for if people are prepared to wrestle a bit with the front. Can you fit it without the front bumper coming off? Is the sub frame accessible?
Hi - yes i was thinking about this - i think it would be really tricky to get off without taking the bumper off.
Simon...the comments on here are as interesting as your video.i hope JLR really do watch your films and learn..charging c£500 for that shield and yet using such poor packing design that it arrives bent and with the fixings in a rubbish bag is not good enough. It would be interesting if JLR explained why they don’t fit all Defenders with the same stronger under mountings so that only the plate has to be swapped...they may have that good reason we are missing..your thoughts on legislation may be the answer. Good Work again...we look forward to your latest exploits every day! 😀😀😀😀
Hi Richard... yes the comments are always good.... they certainly give me ideas of things to try and make videos on...JLR are watching the videos although i do sense in my conversations with them that although head office agree with many points raised that making changes in such a big company is very difficult... and I sense they don't want to "lose face". I would love to have a VLOG with someone from Land Rover and get their view on my "Defender Journey" .
Someone in the comments is suggesting he changed this without removing the front bumper.... i am tempted to take the bumper off and see if this is possible although having taken the bumper off now its not that bad...
powerfulukltd Simon..thank you for the reply! Yes Companies like JLR are big ships to turn when something needs doing but a few of the basic things should not be difficult. When I have said before that they ought to consult you on these accessory designs, I really mean that as you are maybe the best expert at practical fitting that they can ever get. Now turning to that new skid plate, I saw an “Alfa-Squad” video on the 2021 LR Def...posted just last night. You need to watch carefully but it features the SWB model more than before and I do wonder if they might have decided to fit that plate as original equipment...maybe only the strengthened bracket with a plastic cover and you buy just the steel shield but it looks different. Also I notice some are shown with an all black front which might now be an option on the SWB? I will put a link to it below...see if you can spot any differences or clues. Last night I configured a “Model X” but as a Diesel MHEV...a fearsome price though..£89,882.40 GULP!!!😟😱😱😱. Already looking forward to the next job...that missing wheel cover...how about an after market Powerful one??😎 Richard.😀😀
powerfulukltd Link to that AlfaSquad video...ruclips.net/video/Lb8S2567Is8/видео.html
Simon you scare the hell out of me sometimes . I've got the glass patio table and I'm so afraid when putting glasses plates etc on it and here you throwing a heavy piece of steel and a huge skid plate on it . 😱
Great videos! Will you be doing ones for the side ladder and explorer roof rack on the New 110? Thanks!
That's the plan!
@@L663 Looking forward to it! My new HSE arrives from the UK this week.
Once everything is removed how hard is it to remove the actual tow hook? I was think of having that removed and powder coated red. Thoughts? Thanks.
Hi - the actual tow hoop at the front is pretty much welded to the front assembly...so thats not going to be easy
Ahhh. Ok. Thanks.
PLEASE HELP! I want to upgrade my 2016 L494 with some facelift headlights, do they work like Plug and Play? I know I need the new grill but what about coding? Do Matrix Pixel Laser also work? Would really appreciate any knowledge.
Yes a lot of people asking this now... and YES it can be done but there is some electronic trickery needed for the basic function... the LED matrix will needs some sort of computer and camera to make it work..
So when this new design Land Rover was being developed did they also have a team designing after market upgrades ? And some original parts are made out of plastic but the the after market team will redesign them out of metal ?
I wonder if there are some reg at play here... maybe they do not need to do pedestrian safety crash tests with "accessories" ?
@@L663 Maybe so . But how quickly after market upgrades are available on a relatively new car ? I can understand on an old Land Rover. I suppose it makes money 👍
That a good bit f it. But I think it’d be better to have this as standard rather than all the plastic. Thanks for showing how it fits
Great Video Simon keep up the work.. Just wondering will this the 22 models? wondering cause local part counter saying no and I have a 110 2022 P400.
Hi - i can see no reason why this would not fit the 2022 P400
So it does look as if you have to do the whole cosmetic dismantle of the front end to fit the under shield with no short cuts available....
Thats my initial conclusion yep !
how to instal and where to find the back tow bar for the new defender, mine came without from the dealer (over seas) don"t now why!! any one (the detachable tow bar or the electrically deployable tow bar)
Hi Sir... the rear tow bar is something we will install soon...but the deployable one is an expensive options... around £2000 i think
Where did you get the raptor paint? That’s smart stuff.
Yes we are super impressed with the effect of the Raptor paint... its for sale on the internet...we purchased via Britpart as we have an account with them.
We have put it on the website but we may not be the cheapest as we dont sell enough to get the best pricing

Disappointed with poor instructions and the wrong length set screws. How hard can it be to accurately check over the kits before final production starts. IKEA have been making flat pack furniture for years, it's not rocket science. Good job JLR don't do the same otherwise you'd end up with some pretty strange constructions. Just did some searching, that kit is around £625 (including VAT). A nice little earner that should have been fitted as standard.
Yes a lot of people are saying this should have been standard... the instructions / packing / bolts wrong is disappointing in this day and age.....
can the recovery shield be fitted with bumper still in place many thanks
This is a more interesting question - someone below seems to indicate that he has done this... but i am not 100% clear.
@@L663 looks like a dealer job to many plastic bits to break
Aluminum tends to hold heat, not disperse... any concerns re: engine heating? Enjoy the videos from the USA.
I think the heat dispersion of the aluminium will be better than plastic and also there is now an open hole ( for the hoop ) that will allow more airflow.
powerfulukltd Thank you!
For that price it would be nice if they fitted 2 plastic clips into the metal
Yes for the pipe clips !
Love your Defender “series” of videos. Keep them coming. Quick question: why not clean the brake duct before reinstalling?
We should have.... it was a bit rushed on Friday afternoon... lots going on right now... interviewing for a position in the office.. lots of new products.... adapting to Covid safe working etc.
No need to open the bumper. Yesterday I renewed same without opening front bumper.
Hi - so you managed to swap all of this without removing the front bumper ?
@@L663 Yes Day Before yesterday I replaced. I worked with jaguar Land Rover as a Technician.
@@khanvikar9307 OK i now need to give this a go.... any tips ? did you remove wheel arch liner ?
@@L663 I removed only bumpper down side cover and torx screw. After opening the screw you get space to remove. I did not removed wheel arch.
@@khanvikar9307 OK seems i have a challenge
The American's think your are very DAMN BOSSY! Who's the Camera Man?
Could someone explain to me why you need offroad protection for a 2020 Defender? You're more likely to need a wheel rim deflector for protection against the kerb.... ;)
The undertray on my toyota is 4mm steel. Hehe. If you ever hit that, you'll need to replace it.
I think its if you run over a traffic cone in tesco car park..... check out our off road videos...
Land Rover parts department still the same then, bent fixings, missing bolts.....
Yes not great.... and some details missing out of the instructions...
Hi 👋
When ya gonna take it off and raptorize it?
I gues you mean the alumium skidplate.... i did consider it but I am trying to refrain from raptoring too much !
Get a "man bench" instead of that glass top table 😂😂
Yes it sound like it was going to shatter at one point..
@@L663 I cringe every time that table makes an appearance. Has anyone done a Health and Safety at Work audit recently? Not sure that would pass muster in a workshop. ;-)
@@rafflesnh Its made from toughened shatterproof glass... the insurance co did and audit and we are all good.... got the jacks and compressors tested etc..
