This is my 2nd UA Eats video and I love this guy, he's honest and I really like his style of reviewing not trying to be anything else other than just down to earth kinda dude. He has a new fan.
I have lived in CO for 30 years and eaten Beau Jo's twice. It was okay, but mostly crust. Made for carb-loading for a full day of skiing. I doubt any local would call it "iconic".
I've lived in CO for most of my life and rarely go to Beau Jos, like 5 or 6 times in 30 years. I think their thin curst is better. Now Carls Pizza on 38th ave is far superior pizza.
It's definitely iconic, but few Coloradoans would say it's particularly special. It's good pizza, but not amazing. It's mostly famous as a stop on the way home from skiing.
Same here as far a living in CO my whole life. Never been to Beau Jo's though. I have never talked to anyone that had a good thing to say. Most calling it a gimmick. Don't think I ever will go, those pizzas look pretty blah to me.
@z1g If you do go, go with someone and get a larger pizza. The crust size doesn't change, so the bigger the pizza you get, the better the proportions of crust:pizza.
i think it depends on where you live. we've always been in Arvada, so it's iconic to us cause it's always been there while everything around it has been built up. i agree tho, it's not a place like Elway's, where you're willing to get on i-25 for to get to.
As a Colorado near-native (lived here most of my life), the original Idaho Springs location is the best Beau Jo's location. I've never tried the Arvada location, but have tried a few other (non-mountain) locations; from my experience, the lower-altitude locations didn't seem to have correctly adjusted the recipe for the lower elevation. That was years ago, so I would need to try again. IMO, the best way to experience Beau Jo's is to first do something up in the mountains (e.g. a day skiing in the winter, or hiking a fourteener in the summer), and then having a pizza at the Idaho Springs location. CAN'T BE BEAT!
Colorado native here too. Haven't had them in a long time though forgot what they taste like. He should have had cosmos pizza instead lol. But that might just remind him more of a New York/ east coast type of pie. I love cosmos though.
It is interesting you note the similarities with Pizza Hut and Dominos. I do not know if they get their cheese from Leprino Foods (Denver based company) but 85% of others do so. Leprino supplies cheese to 85% of the pizza market, including Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa John's, Hungry Howie's, Tombstone, Tony's, Jack's, and Digiorno. Their cheese and products are also used by Hot Pockets, Stouffer's, Smart Ones, and other products used in Yoplait yogurt, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, and baby formula. Leprino is the US's largest exporter of lactose.
UA you know I love your Chanel and your excellent commentary . It seems the fact that Denver is a mile up above sea level makes the dough come out that way but I’m not a pizza expert . Keep it up . Start planing hitting up Europe this summer 👍🏻
Thanks for checking them out UA! I've lived here for 50-years so this is a nostalgic favorite and appreciate your perspective. For others reading, I recommend the Cajun for that spicy kick and the honey on the crust to cool things down.

I remember going to Beau Jo's after skiing first in the early '80's when the only one was the original in Idaho Spgs. Good apres ski and it hit the spot for sure. Don't add the honey until you finish the middle on a mountain pie.

Must try the original Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs. My favorite is the Prairie Pie with pepperoni / sausage and can't wait to get to the crust to pour some honey on it. I've taken it a step further and put honey on the rest of the pie and the flavor just bursts. I will only do this at Beau Jo's. A must try pizza place.
Thanks for the recommendation need to do research before I head out to colorado for a trip! This helps though, also makes sense in the mountains need a bit more giddy up sometimes haha honey helps

I think you’re right about adjusting the recipe because of altitude. And there is nothing like a good mountain pizza after a day of play in the great Colorado mountains.😊
Denver native in my 50's who loves pizza. I think I ate Beaujo's once as a kid (our family preferred Godfathers (my favorite as a kid) and PizzaHut.) Most of their locations have closed, for all the reasons you discovered. Big deal in the 70s and 80s, but all but forgotten now.
Cool video! Just shows how people that are REALLY into pizza would not like this at all vs. East coast traditional pies. But up there in the mountains it seems pretty great

that cheese looks like it was bought pre-grated, which tends to not melt as well as a solid cheese block grated on site due to coating that keeps the pre-grated cheese from sticking/merging with each other.
It’s like a specialty item. I’m from the northeast and we are not accustomed to that type of pizza. More thin crust. But they are not trying to compare it with a “ New York “ type of pizza. If I was visiting the area I would probably try it out of curiosity.

Lived in CO for thirty years. Eaten at the original and 2 other locations. The pie is just a pie. The crust on the other hand with the honey for desert is awesome.
I worked at a Pizza Mfg. Plant and am a "Pizza Making Hobbyist." I make PIZZA HUT PAN PIZZA "clones," only better! I make my pizzas in a cast iron griddle. The pizza in this video reminds me of one from my hometown, Wheeling, IL and a business called Wa-pa-ghetti's. They formed the edges of their crust like this one, in big balls that served as handles when one ate the slice. Delicious AND VERY filling! 😋
Fun fact. This Arvada location was one of the best mexican food restaurants in town before Beau Jo's bought the location. The tables and interior are mostly what they were before. It was called Alamos Verdes. Honestly, you can't judge Beau Jo's without going to Idaho Springs. It is just different.
Idaho Springs is the original location of Beau Jo’s. Other places were opened in the Denver area for those too lazy to make the drive OR to avoid the hell during winter with the ski traffic
First time I had Beau Jo's, I had it at the Idaho Springs location. I thought it was massively overrated especially for the price. Second time was in Arvada and it grew on me. Its not my first choice for pizza but I will say it is pretty good.
As a "Chicagoan", I really like Beau Jo's. But I've only been to Idaho Springs. Would I say that Beau Jo's is better than my favorite Chicago area thin, thick or deep dish? No. But like thin crust, thick crust or deep dish, Beau Jo's mountain pie is a different style of pizza. I go to Beau Jo's to have something different, that tastes good, that is decidedly Colorado. Idaho Springs is a small mountain town and the restaurant is the old assayers office from over 100 years ago. For me, it's an entire package. Food, location, ambiance, (my) mind set. That's what Beau Jo's is to me.
I moved to Colorado in 1989……Beau Jo’s in Idaho Springs sucked 30 years ago. The first time a midwesterner started telling me about dipping pizza crust in honey; this former Long Island girl almost took the next plane out. It’s very different from what I was used to.
The only reason why I know about Colorado pizza is from a very specific Kitchen Nightmares episode where the restaurant served pies with the most massive crust ha
As a seasoned New York traveler, I found that the locals have their own affection for the food they are familiar with. The restaurants I visited that came highly recommended or had 5 star reviews, were the worst ever. Thanks UA for the great review, but I can see from the color and texture of that crust, that I would be disappointed too.
Exactly. Jersey ( north Jersey transplant) to LA . When the locals have nothing to compare it to they think it's the bomb. Like In n Out burger joint. They line up for miles! For me its just okay at best and thier fries are like cardboard. But they love them . Uck😮
I agree. Food outside of the coastal Northeast gets worse throughout the rest of America. Of course there are exceptions…..The best nachos and cheese I’ve had were in Texas and other items in other states
I am a native Denverite that has traveled the states extensively. Detroit style pizza has to be the absolute best. Not the best place to visit, but excellent style pizza. NJ pizza next, then NY pizza. I will fly somewhere just to try out good restaurants. Denver restaurants are lousy. Sorry, but true.
My mother in law once got a half hawaiian/half cheese and broccoli pizza. I told her she might as well have spit on it. My FIL laughed his ass off while we tucked into our extra meat and extra cheese pie. We were Ron Swansons before Ron Swanson was a thing.
Interesting. I'm not a honey person but I do want to try the "mountain pie" but I'm also from NY now in Denver so I feel like I'm going to be disappointed but also feel as a new local it's something I have to try
I have been following since when you started. A question: Why do you review everything at room (or outdoor) temperature? That seems a bit unfair, but you are from NYC, so I suppose..... 😅
You have to eat at the original location in Idaho springs unfortunately the arvada location doesn't put the effort in to maintain the Beau jos reputation.
It's a little out of proportion when you order a small, the rolled crust will overwhelm the rest of the pie. You need to order a large and then it's perfect. When I would go skiing with friends up in the mountains in the 70's, we would always stop at Beau Jo's In Idaho Springs on the way back to Denver and chow down on a couple of large pies. Of course, we would load it up with about 3-4 more ingredients!
From someone who doesn't eat the crusts (unless it's authentic italian style pizzas), this is probably not my type of pizza lol. I rather have more of the middle/toppings parts than the doughy crust (will fill you up way too quickly)
One...If you go to New Mexico or Colorado and you don't get either the green or red chili with everything, you are messing up(it was on the menu I saw it ;)...Two how didn't you mix the honey and the chili powder on the pizza???
Great waiter you had there. Really attentive. Makes a big difference when eating out especially at somewhere you've never been before.
When he said cool after the wing add on to the order I was pumped
I've never had a bad waiter at any Beau Jo's.

“It’s not like the one from my town so I think it sucks”
Seasoned New York Traveler sounds like the most pretentious asshole ever met 😂
I am a native Denverite that has traveled the states extensively. Detroit style pizza has to be the absolute best. Not the best place to visit, but excellent style pizza. NJ pizza next, then NY pizza. I will fly somewhere just to try out good restaurants. Denver restaurants are lousy. Sorry, but true.
This is good ole Colorado family fun, they don’t take food so seriously over there like New York.
I've lived in Denver and thought the pizza was solid. Honey on the crust really did it for me overall.
ah dude, you gotta go to Idaho Springs for Beau Jos. Or be in Evergreen at least
Take a sip everytime UA says “why dont we”
UA is the man. 💪🏽😁
I’m from Colorado & Beau Jeau’s Blows!!!
I think you are being kind, and that is not such a bad thing...
You need to check out pizzeria Louie’s it’s my new pizza spot and it’s Bomb love the cinnamon pizza bread everything is really good
I have been following since when you started.
A question: Why do you review everything at room (or outdoor) temperature? That seems a bit unfair, but you are from NYC, so I suppose..... 😅
I'm a native of colorado the one in Denver off of colorado Blv is the one you should go too.
Of course, we would load it up with about 3-4 more ingredients!
i live in colorado and we do not have very good pizza. colorado does have the best wings though. (best pizza is colorado is rosalee's in longmont)
From someone who doesn't eat the crusts (unless it's authentic italian style pizzas), this is probably not my type of pizza lol. I rather have more of the middle/toppings parts than the doughy crust (will fill you up way too quickly)
ive never seen the tortilla chips on the bottom of a wing basket before. thats brilliant. wings looked bomb
Fun fact: During the making of broke back mountain the Colorado mountain pie was their second favorite pie to make
One...If you go to New Mexico or Colorado and you don't get either the green or red chili with everything, you are messing up(it was on the menu I saw it ;)...Two how didn't you mix the honey and the chili powder on the pizza???
dont close your eyes too hard I thought i lost you and u traveled to anotehr dimension! lol
Pizza base looked very similar to Costco.
Looks like a loaf of bread with a dab of sauce and cheese in the middle.
