As a Canadian having lived in Canada for most of my life I will never forget the beauty of Colorado and its small towns. I recall when returning home after our (my wife's and I) first visit there I said to my wife that when I die I want my ashes scattered in Colorado because it is as close as one can get to what I consider anyways, to be heaven.

So many times I’ve traveled, left the country and then ended up somewhere quite pretty to realize where I live is actually more beautiful. It never gets old living here. I still love travel to see different cultures, but the mountains, high mountain lakes and creeks are heaven here and when the leaves turn it’s breathtaking.

“If you don’t do it this year, you will be one year older when you do.” The famous last line in every Warren Miller film... so we moved from Seattle to CO and decided to visit every ski town to decide where to live. We nixed Aspen (looked like Orange County, CA from town...just hills), the I-70 ski resort towns (too busy, freeway, too transient, etc.), Telluride... we went house hunting there 3 times but the dark box canyon winters were too much, not to mention the real-deal isolation. We were going to give up and check out Utah when we remembered this one little town we hadn't been to (an odd sounding name maybe?), Crested Butte. When we rounded the bend at CB south, saw the Paradise Divide and the wide valley, we knew.... within 30 minutes, we decided and long story short, lived there for almost 10 years. People say it's too isolated, but with the internet, and a relatively short 4 hour drive to Denver, it checks all the boxes. We moved away to the Roaring Fork Valley (ugh) for my wife's health issues, but to me, CB is the most scenic, coolest (if not just a little too cute) mountain town in Colorado. And yes, the back country skiing is the best.

    • @HashtagColoradoLife
      @HashtagColoradoLife  2 месяца назад

You really got in at the right time. Crested Butte is incredible.
It's funny how life can be like that. You can take weeks scoping out places to move and never really get that feeling.. but within 1 min of being in the right place, you just know.

I lived in Aztec for a few years & spent a whole lotta time in Dogtown. You are correct: belongs on the list & belongs pretty high. Good town. Even the tourist traps are high quality. I like Pagosa better though. Pagosa is this weird place where little mining occurred. Thus little development. It's just a town with a small resort in the middle, but other than that and the absolutely _SPECFUCKINGTACULAR_ scenery it could be a town in Pennsylvania.
Prices reflect that (except on taxes for out of staters!)
Also Wolf Creek smokes the everliving shit out of Purg. Wonderful mix of family mountain & walk the ridge for budget "cat skiing." Especially back in the day. Still good now though.

In 1987, The Grateful Dead played in Telluride. I will never forget coming into town the day before and seeing that huge banner hanging across the street with those beautiful mountains in the background. Welcome Grateful Dead. Band members were hanging out in town with fans. Saw Jerry and Brent at a bar. For those who didn’t have tickets, music was played throughout town on big speakers. @@HashtagColoradoLife I suspect you've never been to Durango frankly. Nor Pagosa Springs. Both are nicer than about half the towns on your list (I've been to all the towns on your list except Crested Butte.) The Pagosa valley is probably the most underrated place in Colorado. It's far more beatiful than far more famous places. No mining there, so it never got developed like the rest.
Plus if you're gonna do Ouray, why wouldn't you do Ned? Nederland's a lot nicer than Boulder. Was 20 years ago anyway. Is Ouray huge now? Wouldn't surprise me with all the douchebag overflow from Telluride (which is probably the prettiest town in CO it should be noted.)
Final note: *your list is HEAVILY weighted towards places douchebags live.* Anyone reading: you're gonna have a lot better time hanging with the locals in Mancos or Gunnison or South Fork than Aspen. Understatement of the year.

@@Saturdayz_In_The_Fall It's good you call it Purgatory instead of "DMR." Of course your name is Dante after all. We called it "Purg" when I lived in Aztec. All in all we rode wolf creek more though. Purg is fun on a groomer day, but the Creek gets MAD snow & holds it for days.
The mountains up above Purg though? SPECTACULAR. The steam train from Durango is one of the few tourist traps frequented often by locals in the US. Well worth the money & time.

Glenwood Springs seems like a charming town with its natural hot springs and rich history. Boulder's combination of stunning mountain views, vibrant arts scene, and delicious food make it a must-visit destination. I'm intrigued by the Switzerland of America, Ouray, with its breathtaking mountain scenery and outdoor activities. And Breckenridge's blend of history, art, and skiing makes it a picturesque town worth exploring. Colorado Springs with its iconic landmarks like Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods is truly a gem. Rock Creak Campground was my destination and there is one point at which I could take a photo or a great vista. It was the most breathtaking view I have ever seen. I traveled the entire Rocky mountain region from Alberta to the southern end over those years, along with all areas to the pacific coast. Southwest Colorado is by far the most spectacular place I've ever seen. Yes glacier national park in Montana is also great, but Southwest Colorado is my favorite. The only thing I dislike about Colorado is the local people thinking that Colorado OWNS it, and discourages nonresident people to go there. Well, 90% of the most beautiful part of the land in Colorado boundaries, DOES NOT BELONG TO COLORADO. It belongs to the USA. National forest, Bureau of Land Management, and the Corp of Engineers. People in Colorado Think they OWN it. They are completely IGNORANT to the facts. Please inform them to the Facts. I'm sick of ignorant people there telling me I'm not welcome. It's an old mining camp that has 3 or 4 small ponds next to it. The area around it is great for hiking. In the mornings and evenings, you can watch a hundred or more trout rising to eat the bugs that land on the surface. Amazing spots like that are everywhere. @@HashtagColoradoLife The only thing I worry about is that those hidden gems get too much attention on social media. Then they will have the same problem as with so many other places that got lots of exposure. Hanging lake is a prime example of a place getting too much attention. While we will leave a place cleaner than we found it there are so many people that will trash it. While I want people to have that same amazing experience that I did, I also don't want the place to be ruined. There are a few places that if I mention them and people start showing up the locals who know about it might try to find me for a heated conversation. Lol. There is a certain hidden hot spring that comes to mind. You might know about it because you lived in that general area. It's a great place to experience but I will never tell anyone else about it in hopes that it stays a local secret. That's if others haven't spilled the beans about it already.

We agree that places should be left in better condition than they were previously. That's the best way to make sure everyone can enjoy it!

I'd probably put Estes Park in the number one spot but I won't argue with Telluride both are stunningly beautiful.

That is a true statement. I remember when the old bridge was there before they put a freeway there. It's too bad but you know how growth and crowds go for cities expanding. Estes Park is especially beautiful this time of year!

As someone with family in Denver and who has been spending time in CO since the mid '90's I'm surprised that Colorado Springs has made the list. While I agree the sights around the town are amazing, the town itself has seriously gone down hill over the last few years. Nowadays if I'm in that area its to avoid Colorado Springs and go to Old Colorado City.

Old Colorado City is a great destination near Colorado Springs, we agree. I have watched Colorado Springs grow and change over the years since I was born here. I still think it's a beautiful place to live! And we've lived in Denver and Boulder.

@@HashtagColoradoLife I do love that part of CO. My fave rave is NM, and my road trips from the Yukon Territory have been to Coralles, just north of ABQ. I’ve spent loads of time between Ft. Collins and Denver, north/south, and out to Silverthorn over the Eisenhower…lots of good times. I’ve also done the Million Dollar Highway, even though I didn’t know that’s what it was, back in the ‘90’s, when I drove up from the 4 Corners, through Durango/Cortez, then on to Silverton.

Co Spgs did really tank...lived there for decades and was sad to see. Traffic is nuts, and folks aren't neighborly or friendly. I have lived all over the city and it just isn't what it once was.

I lived in CO for a decade and have been to all of the places you mentioned. However, I really wouldn't have included Boulder or CO Springs - these are not towns, they are cities. In addition, I wouldn't have included Vail. The challenge with Vail, among many challenges, is that there is an interstate highway running right through it that adds quite a bit of noise and bifurcates the town. The original village has some charm, but Lionshead is anything but charming. (I lived in Vail for 5 years.) Aspen is much more beautiful than Vail.

I was so lucky to live in Colorado as a child. I've been to all these cities! They are beautiful! I lived in Greeley. We visited Estes Park many, many weekends. Then we lived in Gunnison. I learned to ski first on teeny Cranor Hill then in Stunning Crested Butte. Our favorite place to visit was Waunita Hot Springs where you can swim in their outdoor pool any day of the year because of the Hot Water pool. Swimming while it's snowing is one of my favorite childhood memories. ruclips.net/video/ZGbp6pomEdM/видео.html

My family spent a month every summer from 1965, when I was 10 years old, until 1973 at our little cabin in Whitepine. It was ten miles up what was then a dirt road near Sargents. We would go to Salida or Gunnison once a week to grocery shop and do our laundry. We would go to Waunita Hot Springs to swim and eat at the restaurant that was there at that time. We lived in southern California. But I loved it so much in Colorado, I moved to Gunnison in 1980 when I was 25 years old. Within days of moving there, I met my future husband when he interviewed me for a job.❤❤❤ I forgot about Cranor Hill until I read your comment. We skied up at beautiful Crested Butte as well. We lived in Gunnison a total of 9 years, moving away for a couple years and then moving back. We left there for the last time in 1994. I have been back a few times to visit friends. I love those mountains. Colorado will always be in my heart.

Sandra. How wonderful you got to experience all this wonderful Colorado places especially the Gunnison area. It's truly magical. I lived there for 3 years. My dad was superintendent of schools. He came up with Mr. Ed. All the children from the surrounding areas who rode the bus into Gunnison for school were equipped with headphones. And the children could listen to different channels with content. My dad got a grant to provide that. It was the first school bus system to have it. This was in the late 60's so it was so innovative back then. So when I say headphones they were the huge big ones. Not the little ones we use today.
