PATH of EXILE 2: Hands on Review - Is it Worth the Extended Wait?

  • I was able to play over three hours of Path of Exile 2 in LA this week - here's an overview of my impressions and my review - with another delay to the beta will it be worth the wait?
    We were able to record our gameplay for the first time ever, so I can share my time with the new and improved Ranger class as well as my thoughts on the core gameplay changes that come with "Attack while moving" and WASD control schemes and just overall how PoE 2 is shaping up!
    Thanks to GGG for covering flights and accommodation - would not have been financially viable for any of us to do this trip otherwise.

    To me? So far every single change I see in PoE2, both compared to PoE1 and what we heard about PoE2 years ago is exactly what I want. So I am so very excited for this.

      actually POE2 is giving me strong Diablo 1 vibes, in a good way (imo). Hard, deliberate, every enemy is a threat, resource management very important...

      It's totally a mix of Diablo and Dark Souls now, if they manage to nail that mix I'm never gonna stop playing this game.

    Dear ZiggyD, first of all thank you very much for sharing your insightful and reflective impressions with us!
    Especially theses days, where some game developers or publishers tend to be not so open over the current state of their game, I personally welcome GGG openly stating, that they rather delay the closed beta for the game, before not meeting the rather high expectations of many players.
    Still, letting you and others play it, like you did here, and share your thoughts with us, is not something every company would do.
    So, thank you ZiggyD, but also GGG for this content at this point of development. Greetings from the other side of the globe (Germany) ;)

      They just need to buff flask default to what ranger felt like and change almost nothing else (maybe remove having to redo the entire map if you die before a boss cuz that sucks).
      General feedback from almost all players agreed on those points so they should change those things for sure or theyll alienate A TON of people

      Yeah that's why it wasn't really ready for hands on testing, they haven't really finished the rigging for it so it's not quite there yet.

    What, that fog phase is literally the wolf boss from Genshin! I see they are casting a wider net of inspiration, I like that!
    And generally I really like that PoE2 seem to take the action part of arpg more seriously. It's very interesting how it seem to play more like an isometric action game, but with all the rpg systems.
    While bosses have lots of moves, I still think they take a bit too much time to kill tho.

    I would like to see my character holding a shield, cornered to the wall, facing a horde of monsters and surviving the ordeal. That would be awesome!

    About the 'mount' as I understand it if you had an ability that let you move at full speed while attacking at the cost of a higher stun chance, that could be disengaged by a movement skill and left behind a mirage archer, it would essentially be the same. So it seems to just be flavor imo.

    If you said that even on a Ranger you think you would be in real trouble during boss fights without your specialization in flasks, I wonder how would melee fare then, which would probably have like 1/5 of your damage uptime and which also would be taking all those swings the boss is doing to the face.

      look at ALkaizers gameplay with Warrior, he has a full playtrough of act1 plus, he first droped a 2h rare mace later he alched a better one, he deleted the boss with the warrior.....

      ​​@@Imperius12 so its classic melee dps check more than gameplay and def. Not really a fan of that. Pretty much what I dont like about melee in poe 1. Not sure how they could do it differently though.

      @@Xirpzy there are several factors - CC bar for stun being a major one. DPS would always be king for every build, but between guaranteed blocks and stun having impact in a setting other than mobs, it's moving melee in a better direction for defensive options.

    That "explosion parry" that Raise Shield provides if you time it right is gonna be awesome.
    Also note that this is one so far known way to get Endurance Charges.
    Endurance Charges are also known now to be consumed by Warcries for buffing.

      I dunno, had a few good ones and a unique of course but I had terrible weapons the whole way through which meant my damage was a fair bit lower than some others I've seen. And I didnt seem to find any Augments, which others did. I'd say only really my boots and quiver were a bit over expectation.

    When you say stuff like ''You can press this button to raise your shield to block damage and.. you can weapon swap your bow to a shield, raise the shield then weapon swap back'' the very next sentence should be ''most people can't be bothered to press a button to activate a guard skill.

      Thats why wasd movement makes no sense to me. You will have access to 2 main skills on the mouse and then what? Juggling 3-4 skills will already be pain. Even "one button" builds in poe 1 have supporting skills like war crys, traps, blood rage, guard skills...

      @@Xirpzy Wasd moving will alow ranged characters to continue to do damage while kiting bosses. It can only work with one of those mouses with 10 buttons though. It's pay2win in a weird way

    I'm loving everything i see about POE 2. I'm totally ok with all the changes and in fact for me is much needed. I been with POE since early access and I am by far a casual player, so i may not have as much say as someone who's put in 10k hours but I just really love all the changes. It's just unfortunate we have had to wait so long and sadly with changes in my life, i may not be able to play this much when it finally does launch now, but that is life, at least i am alive.

    The new piece of information that I hadn't heard previously. no life on the tree feels like a BIG deal for me. I'm really excited to not feel like I have to spec into life on every freaking build. It just feels like a checkbox that's not fun to check. It's preventing me from making decisions which is what the tree is about. Really excited for that and I hope they keep that direction.

    I mean it looks like a very different game here which i mean could be fine cause it also looks lkke a fun game but still, i really wanna see the end game here, see how the game is going to be for 95% of my play time with it. Act one looks sweet, but how much act 1 does one play, bottomline? How will combat feel in high level maps or equivalent? Will it retain this sort of approach or change drastically? In PoE 1 lvl5 combat is VASTLY different from lvl95 combat
    At the end of the day free game bo bitching gonna try it out and see i guess lmao

      @@facelessone86 If it does I'm out and I'll be incredibly sad, so will the majority of PoE 1 players, so I guess they're betting on many new players loving being tormented 24/7 and I'm pretty sure that will not last long. I'm very sad my PoE 1 money went to a hardcore Path of Ruthless Dark Souls game.

      That is pretty much the full clip, it was B-roll GGG gave out. A few people did play warrior for the event though I'm not sure how many went with shields.

    This game Will actually be very satisfying playing with your friends. More survival/brutal. As the initial drop of the game with many years to improve it over time, it will be in a good spot.

    I think GGG needs to remind the current player base that POE1 isn’t going away, and will continue to get new leagues, content and improvements. And that players now have one more game to choose from.
    Far from everyone that _really_ enjoy the current POE1 will enjoy POE2. That is inevitable when making large changes. POE2 is more of an expansion in player base rather than a replacement of POE1.
    Manage the expectations of the current POE1 player base while still attracting a new player base, and getting a part of the POE1 player base to switch over to POE2. And remind players that similar to how SSF, Ruthless etc, POE2 is a new way to play the game, and will be just right for some players, and not the ideal for others.
    (As seen by someone that prefers to do long grinding sessions while watching TV on a second monitor, and couldn't do long play sessions if the gameplay that slow and intense, and require real focus. I think I'll stay with POE1, and that's not a negative thing or critique of what POE2 is shaping up to be. POE1 is right for me, and I don't mind other game modes that probably won't be for me. I'll give a try for sure, and might be something I go back to once or twice per year when I'm getting burnt out, similar to SSF currently is for me.)

      I wish they never called it PoE2, because of that simple "2" there the PoE 1 community thinks it has to be just like PoE1 and it has to be for them and try to do a lot of annoying pushback because of that ... they don't stop to think that GGG is literally keeping and developing PoE1 alongside the new one... it's super silly. I for one am super excited, and I am so tired to see people from the current community crying about not being able to zoom-zoom and shit like that in PoE2 when they can keep doing that in PoE1. Your comment is the best I've seen from the opposite camp so to speak.

    Looks OK. I just hope I don't need a PHD to play it. I know many of my friends find it hard to get into, due to the over bloated currencies and crafting and very hard RnG. But, they got straight into Last Epoch, but then they come from a D2 back ground. love your relationship with GGG over the years.

      I think you will need a PHD for sure, I mean it looks like you need one to beat the act 1 boss. This will be the sweatiest, grindiest no life arpg ever.

      PoE2 could also be a bit overwhelming and complex, however, you will start as *tabula rasa* (blank slate), and that way you can learn more about currencies, strategies, crafting, and such, in comparison to PoE1 which has 10yrs of content

      Don't need a PHD to play PoE1. It's overwhelming the amount in the game but if you aren't trying to "win the game" (because you can't) and you're following a guide (because you don't know what you're doing yourself) but actually paying attention to what you're taking and how it works, then you will learn over a season or two what most useful things do. You will not learn everything, because the point of the game is to appeal to hardcore diablo players with a more in-depth system, which makes it surprising that your friends come from D2 and can't figure out the basics to the point they feel they need to be a genius just to play it. Most of the basic systems are lifted straight from D2, it works quite similar.

    I LOVE that they're willing to alienate the hyperactive one click players. They ruined PoE1, and I wouldn't even play PoE2 if it was more of the same. I want substantial enemies and thoughtful gameplay.

    Real time reflections on the health and mana globes wow. The visual fidelity in this is remarkable, deep shadows, cloth physics. My goodness. Very excited.

    I always thought that was a dumb question, “worth the wait?” It’s not like you can do anything about it. It will release when GGG releases it.

      It's more in a sense of wait with active looking for new information than wait and when it is out it is out. Maybe this is just my interpretation, but for me it is first example of worth waiting. I think getting into PoE1 is harder and harder for me, when I skipped 5-6 leagues now (weak hardware, less time to play and a little bored of playing generally). But Poe2 is something I could get into like when Poe1 were getting into open beta. It is Poe we know, but at the same time something new.

      It's a very relevant question when PoE already exists, is F2P, and live service with insanely big updates. There will be a lot of PoE players that won't even appreciate the improvements the second game brings and try to make memes out of it. I think ZiggyD hit on a few of these points in the video.
      Less ways to scale HP in the game means less options (like using health as a mana replacement may not be possible, and HP stackers won't exist), the basic mobs actually being dangerous and the attacks being properly telegraphed means the gameplay is more methodical and less straight power fantasy.
      If playing spreadsheet simulator and being the best at it is your thing, then PoE2's direction probably won't impress you, and then yes, it will not be worth "waiting" for, because you already know you will prefer PoE1.

      @@DoNotFearTheReapa You raised few good point. In a topic of blood magic I think it will be fine. They could scale down life cost modifier to less than 2.5 times that of mana. Additionally mana could be scaled down too, we don't know.
      Making mechanics less extreme could be overall positive, cause it won't be too hard to enter. Maybe that would get new people to play in PoE universum. I think getting scaling down won't make game easy, cause there still will be aspect of hard to master, but easy to start.

    In general it sounds a lot like Ruthless mode. And what is a bit strange is that the general reception is very good from people, while Ruthless had rather poor reception, even though they look very similar in concept (longer boss battles, bosses reset, more scarce loot, slower, less spammy gameplay, harder campaign, etc.).

      Ruthless doesn't offer support for that gameplay if that makes sense, no dodging, proper blocking, the enemies themselves aren't truly tuned for it. Ruthless is basically just hard without any of the satisfying combat.

    So I think people would bash new Poe2 campaign, cause it will take longer than Poe1, so far I see. For me it is something good, cause we've got used to Poe1 and most of complains are exaggerated by that. I'm a little sad to know Poe2 beta is delayed, but all of the features shown so far are justifying it a little. Additionally more and more mechanics being revealed show us, how different approach to game developement is between GGG and other studios in a genre. I did spend several dozen hours playing LE and I did like it, but something was missing. I did skip D4, cause it was doomed to fail for me with item system and monetisation. Now seeing Poe2 I cannot wait to try it out. Fluent gameplay, animations, interesting skill combos and various visual and mechanic upgrades are so interesting. It feels like a good balance between something new and something familiar. WSAD movements is something I thought about few years ago as fun mechanic to mess around with and getting something like active block with it. Now I see those in Poe2 and I regret not sending this suggestion earlier and I want to try it myself. I hope beta will be not much later than previously announced.

    I never really stick it out to late game content in PoE, red maps and up are just not fun to me. There's too much going on and I feel like I die out of nowhere for no reason constantly. As someone who has played through all of Fromsofts games more times than I can count, I like challenging and rewarding games. PoE1 doesn't feel challenging, or rewarding passed a certain point, so I just finish the campaign and map for a day or two and then I'm done for the league.
    PoE 2 looks like it will actually be challenging mechanically. If I die it's because I didn't dodge at the right time, or position properly. Not because one of my res was 3% under capped so a random rare one-shot me from off screen.

    I think the idea of "town portal" for potions, breaks the flow of combat in a terrible way. It also doesn't make much sense if the Ranger has flask recharge nodes. If GGG really wants to double down on the "town portal" potions, then there really shouldn't be any way to recharge them. Or if they already gave up, and gave Ranger flask recharge, then they should've just added that as a standard for every class, it shouldn't even be flask recharge nodes then. It is like, GGG knows there is a problem, but don't know how to solve it. When the truth is that, this isn't a problem to solve, but an accepted compromise. Either resources are important, or they're not. Because if you don't solve accept a solution to this problem, you get PoE1, where everyone does everything they can to ignore resource management. Here, GGG has to accept one of two oxymorons. Either break the flow of their combat, which was the whole point of PoE2. Or compromise on resource management, by either be more forgiving on potions or accept that everyone will do what they can to ignore resource management.
    In addition, I understand that GGG has always wanted players to immediately feel the difficulty of the game as soon as they play. But that is not a good thing for new players. The first act should literally be a tutorial. I'm not saying that it has to hold your hand, but it shouldn't frustrate new players. We already had that once with PoE1, do we really need to do that again with PoE2?
    Watching the Iron Count fight, at the midway point, what is the tell for the fog phase? Is there even a tell? How do you know where the boss is going to attack from?

    The ranger flask passives arent too powerful for attrition fights if non-vets of the game were getting stomped so hard they couldnt even progress, and vets were mostly taking multiple tries to beat bosses... and in some cases not on ranger also getting dumpstered multiple times.
    If anything the DEFAULT for flasks should be what ranger felt like where you cant hit them too much but youre not just running out and getting screwed either.
    Seems like going back to town to refill them was unanimously hated by everybody at the event so they should absolutely just back off that idea and make things feel like how the ranger felt. (Hard but feeling achievable rather than ending up feeling hopeless especially for newer players)

    I think making content easier just makes the problem worse, the reason these people struggle is because they didn't grow up playing difficult games so they're trying to run before they can even crawl. The progression of difficulty is very important but also very delicate and you don't want to alienate veteran players. That being said, having a way to decrease difficulty while also decreasing rewards in some way could be a cool compromise for players that are new to the genre. I always think a game is much better when it gives you control of the difficulty to some extent.

    This game will not be "playable" in click to move. There is no way you could do a lot of the optimal stuff (blocking shoot while moving etc) with click to move.

    almost every single time i’ve seen a game miserably fail at what they promised, the question was “why did you release the game in this state” or “why didn’t you guys delay this” people complain or make jokes but i think most of us who have seen the potential outcomes of cutting corners & rushing, know that there’s a significant up side to things like this being pushed back.

    The ARPG purists are going to scream. But this is a necessary step forward. point and click gameplay is simply too limiting as to how you can create actual gameplay, as opposed to just relying 95% on the systems around health and damage and passive negations etc. Skill-based gameplay that does not just rely on 'number go up' is a great step forward that the genre as a whole needed.

    If I see any end game theorycrafters complaining about lack of ability to cancel the cool character animations for more DPS I'm going to start calling for all of those individuals to be ejected from the POE community.     I'll be honest, this does not sound exciting nor building any interest for PoE 2 for me. I will surely try it but I'm not expecting much and certainly do not feel any hype for it.

    Too bad they decided to double down on ridiculous boss fights. It makes it feel like I'm playing Dark Souls, not an arpg. It's probably the biggest reason that I wouldn't stick with the game; the frustration of banging my head against a wall. It also greatly limits what character build you can go with. If you want to succeed in PoE, you need to follow guides in order to get through all of the bosses to make sure you've built your character in specific ways. This removes many options and freedom available to the player. It seems that PoE 2 is only going to be even worse.

    I think shield blocking mechanig might be good in early game, but given what PoE late game builds are, nobody will use this.... unless blocking charge something and then you release it.

    Everyone keeps saying the game is good, and it probably is, but no one is asking if the game is going to be good, of course it is, but is it going to replace poe?
    I don’t think so, people beat dark souls and are done with it, it’s annoying and frustrating, we want D2 LOD feels, not dark souls feels, something replayable and not annoying but satisfying, although poe to me now is vampire survivors, or a dead skill tree with hundreds of choices and they are all garbage unless you follow a specific guide, the illusion of choice is real. Either way, I hope they don’t make poe2 annoying to play like dark souls.

    I'm in a downer mood about PoE 2 for a while now and this event made it worse. It looks soooo amazing graphically and atmospherically, but the core is dark souls, the core is 100% focus or rerun the whole zone. I'm very scared, I hate dark souls games, they are the antithesis of fun for me, I don't want PoE 2 be so unforgiving and hardcore at its core. Players should feel powerful, not scared dying all the time because you feel like a cardboard box that's been tossed around. How people dare to call this a hack&slash ARPG is beyond my comprehension now.

    Oh no no no no I never played the first path of exile for over 35,000 hours+ just to chill and blast I have always played very mythologically to test systems and give myself a very satisfying experience never getting sick of the different things even if something got nerfed into the ground it was the feeling of overcoming challenges or figuring out how to fix a problem with gearing that made it so fun for me even if I barely ever get to super end game. PoE 2 looks like it's going to feel more like another series that I love dark souls and elden Ring. I think I'm going to love PoE 2 even more than the first one. Especially since I absolutely adored the ruthless with gold event. And the mount thing is freaking awesome I just hope they don't limit it to just certain classes. I want to use it on a summoner lol

    You've played PoE for 10ish years, these boss fights weren't easy for you. If they don't tune these down, they won't have much of a player base after a week. This isn't Dark Souls.
