Wow, it's very strong. Took that cartwheel onto the wooden deck like it wasn't anything! Used to build Tiger Moth versions of this as a kid. Lots of crashes.
@@willwinn8559 Yeah, but luckily the fuel tank was empty otherwise it would have burst into flames too!! (My brother and I used to do that with Airfix kits!!)
These kits are great, cheap and very pleasurable. Built this one myself. Made same mistake throwing it, but the patchwork to the paper covering adds to the realism.
I'm a little late to this party but what a great build and video of it. :-)I'm just about to build a peanut scale R/C Eindecker and went searching YT to see what's out there and found your video Tom.
I build free flight models, and, while I enjoy your static builds, this one is so much more relevant to me. Should you do more free flight stuff (please do!); I'd be fascinated in how you jig for squareness and accuracy in the build. Covering tips from some one with your attention to detail would be very much appreciated also!
thank you - and I know exactly what you mean.... It was my very first time throwing a plane like this and didn't imagine what'll be happening or how far it will fly. Unfortunately these are the only pictures I've got from my late plane....RIP
I think I have those same drawings! Excellent job! I attempted to make a C/L version (electric), but I made the fuselage too weak. I still have pretty good wings and tail surfaces for another try though...
I have a limited run, low pressure injection molded kit that I think I'm going to build next, thanks to you. I'v been avoiding it because it's a different animal than I'm used to, but it was cheep, so if I blow it, who cares.
Hello Tom, very nice wirk and excellent presentation in your videos. Thank you for making & sharing them ! Let me ask, hiw you get that nice timber/ wood look on the standard plastic propeller? It puts the model on higher level on its own.. I just started building very same kit - just my second build, so Im checking your videos for inspiration. Thank you. Peter
Great video. I started making this model a couple of years ago and got 2/3rds of the way there, but never finished it so, with this self isolating lockdown, I thought I would try to finish my build. Having great difficulty with soldering the undercarriage wire parts. I have a clean soldering iron, am using flux, and 60/40 Tin/Lead solder, but it just will NOT stick. Any thoughts, advice? Cheers
When I came to the soldering process I found it helpful to sand the areas of contact. I used an iron with a lot of power, heated the rods until the soldering fluid nearly boiled and after that placed the tin at the parts. It worked...
Hi Tom!! At point 1:03 in this film. You were placing copper/brass tubing on the airplanes motor. May I ask how you made these tubings? Did you use the guide for the Black Motor Tubes as a guide? Please let me know. My Eindecker is coming along and I wish to add the additional copper tubings. I humbly thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon.
I used copper wire of electrical cable for it. I think it was something about 1-2 mm diameter. The cylinders gave me the guide for bending and positioning the exhaust simulation
Great video! I'm building the same kit and noticed the wing inserted perfectly until I glued former 3 in place. Now the instrument panel blocks the wing from sliding in. The instructions simply tell you to cement the wing in place. In the video, it looks like you cut the wing in half to install it. Is that really what you needed to do?
Thanks - when I remember correctly, the plan instructs you to cover the two halves and fix them at the fuselage with an additional wooden stick. Please take another look at the instructions. I'm pretty sure the wing should be mounted in halves with space for the cockpit.
Hi Tom!! I just purchased this EXACT balsa kit!!! I sincerely hope to assemble mine to the level of perfection that your's is! Also, what kind of adhesive / glue did you use to assemble your kit here? And, the 2 parts that had to be sanded down, how does one determine the level of sanding before it gets down to be "too small"?
congratulation to your choice ;-) I used "UHU hart" for it. And for the canvas/paper I took white glue thinned with water - ordinary wood glue. In case of sanding: it's a kind of testing and feeling.
Hi Tom!! Is the "string" that you used on the Cylinders of the Eindecker 3's engine, come included with the kit? Or, was is purchased separately? And if so, what size of string did you use? My kits not here yet...
punkrockpub I used ordinary electrical cable for it. In my memory it's something about 1 mm diameter. You may decide on your own which size suits you best. For the simulated exhaust tubes I used copper wire of even bigger electrical cables. It was my own decision to simulate the engine that way. The kit itselfs stops by using the wood bars for the cylinders. It's up to you. ;-)
Elmer's white glue works well on all wood to wood joints. Just be sure to let it dry thoroughly before unpinning. The glue shrinks as it dries and can cause warps. Thinned with a little water, you can also use Elmer's to attach the tissue covering....For sanding parts to shape, sand a little, check the fit. Repeat until you are satisfied. Patience is required to get good results.
There's a triangle at the end of both fuselage sides with a little gap to the next little strut. When both sides are mounted you have to put in a little rod. This is one fixing point for the rubber band, the propeller is the second one...
that's cool, I'll try that next time. I just finished a korda Wakefield and just used glue stick for the tissue which looks ok, yours looked great. was your solution like 50/50 or something
I always used to try and fly models over long grass. Softer landing. Would it be posible to use 'Spray mount' on the wooden frame and then press it onto a taut piece of tissue?.
My Great x2 Uncle Wilfred Ellis Durant flew in the RFC from April 1918 to July 2nd 1918. He most likely would have have flown in a S.E.5a Scout, a beautiful aircraft. He was shot down near St. Omer on July 2nd , 1918. My Grandparents found his medals and uniform put away in a barn when they lived in Kemptville, Ontario and donated them to the war museum. The medals and uniform are in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa to this day. Here is a link. I wonder if you would ever consider building this aircraft. www.warmuseum.ca/collections/artifact/1092134/?media_irn=5471330

fres pois I bent the different wires in their desired shapes and used solding iron as usual - nothing special. I tried to achieve a suitable heat and let the tin flow in it's position. Supported by soldering grease. Does this info help you?
HI Tom!!! How did you glue your wooden frame together without the glue sticking to the instruction sheet? I'm having some problems with mine. I humbly thank you in advance and hope to hear some good news soon.!!! :-)
As you might have seen on the pictures, there's a bit of a reflection. I am using some sort of plastic wrap covering the original plan. As I remember it was an advice standing in the descriptions of the plan ;-) Never glue directly on the plan though...
I love watching your videos. I understand the amount of time put into something like this, so I'm curious if slowing down to capture a frame gives you a moment to evaluate and even correct some of your modelling? In short, has it helped your modelling at all?
Since the Original Propeller were build of several wood layers I tried to simulate this by using stripes of different brown colour first. On these paints I put tiny little strokes side by side of darker or brighter colour in some kind of parabel shape. Like you can see on original plywood boards... I am thinking about a tutorial video for simulating wood effects.
Great build video but it would have been nicer to see the model treated better at the end. Maybe try flying in an open field instead of intentionally crashing it into the porch deck. That's a lot of work just to abuse it like that.

I bet he paint it this way. You've got that propeller painting scheme in his other films.
You're right, I painted the wooden structure.
Superb work, Tom. Do you use a medium called Dope? It's a shrinking varnish specifically for use with the tissue on balsa planes?
Thanks - I used diluted white glue. But the other balsa planes were coated with dope covered tissue.
Do you Duco cement to connect the wood pieces? I remember using that in the 60's and 70's making Guillows balsa kits.
I used UHU hart - special glue for wood.

Hi Tom, about the rigging; what do you use between the wind and the top of the cabin? It seems metalic pieces.... best regards

Is that dope that you used for the tissue covering? Looked more like white glue.
You're right, it's white glue.
But i noticed that you used it on the edges to attach the tissue, what did you used then on the tissue itself?
