Knowing the material can be more important than knowing the clean code. Light colored natural fibers like cotton or rayon are likely to turn brown with water cleaning. Synthetic fibers (in my experience) will not. The browning is a reaction to the natural fibers. I've seen many manufactures put a generic "S" code on synthetic materials. I've always steamed them with water anyways and haven't had any be damaged. The water cleaning gets the best results. Also, the furniture is almost always dirtier than you can see. Furniture fibers filter dust out of the air the same way an air filter does. And when you sit on the furniture, your blasting that dust up into your lungs. Best thing to do is clean your furniture at least once a year but we all know someone who has had the same gross couch since college and thinks it's clean enough lol
1000 times this; run training courses in carpet and upholstery cleaning and understanding the material is the number 1 factor in cleaning outcome. It’s also the deciding factor in damage - put the wrong product on the wrong material and it’s ruined (even water!)
@nowimlaughing1496 there is a product called "brown out." It and similar products can help. In some cases the browning is permanent. You can also reduce the chances of browning with quick drying. Use a strong fan and a lot of dry strokes

I have that exact same sofa same material etc. I tried cleaning it w my small machine but just made a mess now it has dry brown stains. But I’ll be trying this method! I hope it works 🤞
Try a baking soda solution with dawn dish soap and regular bar soap on the stains with a small brush then blot and rub with dry towel. That's how I got some pretty bad stains from my kitchen chairs. Try a small area first.
Spray cleaning chemical. Agitate with the steamer. Then go in with an extraction machine. The steamer plus chemical will help loosen a lot more than the steamer alone.
What's your suggestion for a good vacuum for bare floors? I have cats and foster kittens so I need something that won't spit the litter back out. Thanks in advance!
Good question! Car litter can be tough to vacuum up… I’ve found that the vacuums with the soft brushes work well for the more fine things like kitty litter. I’m really like the new Hoover Emerge. The two brush system does great.
@@melissabean9747 I have a Tineco cordless vacuum and it comes with two roller heads, one for carpets and one for hard floors that's soft. The soft roller head works great on hard floors as it doesn't scatter dirt and debris everywhere like a brush with bristles that's intended for carpets and can pick up a lot more.

I was given a beautiful sofa which had been in a damp basement for a long time. I vaccumed and cleaned it. The dust and damp smell has diminished, but there is still some. Besides cleaning it over and over, any tips on removing dust and damp smell?
I'd like to see how to dust/clean semi-rough finished wooden furniture. A vacuum is OK for some dust but doesn't get it all, and a cloth or swiffer duster snags. Help please & thank you!
I'm sure this answer is too late. but sometimes colored fabrics like denim that I've washed a billion times the rinse water is always still blue. from the fabric dye. So maybe there's an element of that...? I was wondering too because if my rinse water looked like Brandon's... I'd think I wasn't done. I'm wondering if you would reapply cleaner too, or just keep rinse rinse rinsing.
Can a steam cleaner be used to remove washing machine detergent smell? The previous owner had used a heavily scented detergent to which im allleegic to.
I have a secondhand faux leather couch. No tag, no idea where they got it from. My roommate with his puppy who has made lots of messes on the couch just moved out & I'm wanting to clean it. Considering myself & or a professional. Suggestions?
Possibly, I think some fabrics, especially older ones tend to surrender their colour,it’s probably got something to do with age and fading and just becomes more noticeable after an extraction, most clothes become duller with washing as well, usually the first wash causes the biggest colour difference, don’t know if it’s a wrong cleaner , but it should be recommended for upholstery
My roommate annoyingly spilt red candle. Wax all over my couch, that's light Gray, and we didn't know until we got back from a weekend trip. what can I do for that? Besides using an iron in wax paper im sure the red stained the couch what can I do to fix that
Do you have any videos on removing washable couch covers? Mine looks like they can be removed but there are buttons with string that go through to the other side and are stapled to cardboard pieces. Are these actually removable and washable??
I have a 3 piece furniture set with the browning/watermarking like you show at 1:23 . What's odd is that it just happened to all the pieces of furniture a few months after they were last professionally cleaned and a protectant added on top of the protectant that was already there and it's grown worse over time. I had a highly rated carpet cleaner who did great work with our carpets, but took a cushion back to the shop and couldn't get the marks out. None of the tags have any rating on how to clean the fabric. Any ideas what happened and how to fix?
It sounds like you have a delicate fabric that has a natural fabric in it example, cotton , silk , linen all of these fabrics have to be cleaned properly with special techniques and solutions and just like the video explains not all fabrics are cleaned the same. If there is water rings and browning it could be cotton or a cotton blend and the browning is known as cellulosic browning . One way to correct this is with citric acid or peroxide and test a small inconspicuous area to see how the fabric reacts and dry with hair dryer quickly. The longer the browning is there the more likely it is permanent, this could be a stain now. The best way to tell what a fabric is , is to do a burn test by the way it burns you can determine what the fabric is this should be the 1st step of inspection before cleaning upholstery if there is no tag. The protector from the factory will be removed after a professional cleaning and this is why the carpet cleaner re-protected the upholstery. If it is a delicate fabric you should not use a water based protector this could also cause browning .
Either I was taught wrong or you're doing it wrong. When I extract, I spray the water only when moving the head of the extractor towards me, backwards. It allows the water to be immediatelly sucked up, thats what gets the dirt out of the upholstery, it creates a sorf of whirl and thats what gets it clean. Obviously the way you do it you suck up the water too but it seems to me like less effective and not so proffesional way to do it. You can let me know if I'm wrong but to me it makes sense :)
I think that his idea is that you let the cleaning fluid soak in so that it can get deep into the dirt. This, in theory, makes it so that, once you go over the upholstery with the cleaning machine, the water and/or solvent pulls the deep-seated dirt out of the upholstery on its way out. In contrast, the way you said you do it would likely pull the fluids out before they can capture the deeper dirt, thereby cleaning the surface but not the deeper parts of the fabric. Hope this makes sense to you.
