I really missed your roadbike videos but this one makes up for all of it. Thank you for this really nice insight to a race and pls keep the road bike stuff coming, i really enjoy it.
I know you were asking questions about format a while back: this is it! Thanks so much for sharing this. Since I rode the 3B myself this year, it was great to see all of your insights (and suffering). Looking forward to Haute Route coverage, keep it up!
The video, the edit, the sound is so good, my wife was wondering what I was watching cause I was in tune with your story 😊 and of course, Jasper, thank you for all the tips about the race day!
Being heavier than a traditional cyclist, I always try and do my own pace… the goal is to get to the top and still be able to go… I usually catch the group on the downhill… 🤷🏽♂️
I did 130k with 2,5k climbing race in June and I weigh around the same as you (ca 82kg). There were 4 bigger climbs and I also tried to stay with the front group, but as soon as we hit the first big climb I gave up because I knew holding 400w for 600m climb would be too much for me so I drove my own pace. Formed some nice groups on the other climbs and was feeling like I have more fuel left in the tank, but the finish was not on a mountain as there was 5k downhill and 15k flat at the end so I did not want to push more on the last climb and then ride solo. Unfortunately people in the group (around 10-15ppl) were probably completely smoked in the finish as only me and 2 other guys were pacing... ended up sprinting for 2nd place in our group (80/400 overall). But I feel a little bit disappointed as I was still feeling OK on the last climb and probably should have pushed more in the beginning to hold on to a better group for later climbs and maybe finish 10-20 places higher, or I should have tried to go solo from the last downhill. But it is a great learning experience to either stay conservative and see how it plays out or push harder. Next time I will try to push harder for a different experience.

Leaving a comment for the algorithm. Happy to see this is a nice longer video. For some insights maybe: RUclips stops showing videos of subscribed channels very quickly if you skip a couple. Jasper, I love your channel! Especially because you uncover the cycling culture of The Netherlands, which is pretty hard to grasp for expats. As an idea for a new video - can you talk about the cycling clubs we have? Does it make sense to join them? What are the most significant/oldest? Is there any interesting historical background? Some interviews with founders can be a good addition as well.
Absolutely great coverage of this Gran Fondo, and a good test for HR Pyrenees which is a notch or 2 harder due to multiple 3000m+ days, and super high quality riders (at least when I did the 7 day version back in 2016). I am 25 years older than you and can only put out 4.0w/kg so I could feel your pain when you got dropped in the 2nd half. I have no idea how you can pull out your phone and record on a climb. Awesome skill. Nobody wants to see a video of me when I am covered in spit and snot and close to puking! Anyway - great job to overcome the Wahoo breakdown, ride by feel and enjoy the day when things dont go your way. Good luck at HR and don’t go out too hard.
Great vid Jasper. You probably already know this, but just in case... You simply ran out of glycogen. It's very hard for heavier riders over long climbing races. Your high power requires huge energy requirements. It's simply difficult to replace the energy fast enough. I'd recommend working on increasing your fueling to 120g an hour, even higher if you can build up to it. Over a five hour race that's a lot more fuel. Give it a go leading into your next big race. It normally takes a couple of months to get the gut used to the higher levels.
Mmmm maybe, but fatigue and fitness played a role this time. Anyway, I improved on that part in the next races that are coming up! (Races are done, videos are coming 😜)

Good job Jasper! The burning question in many of us might be the bike question: How does that bike compared to the rest of the superbikes you have ridden before? Even if you are a rider with the same powercurve of yours and races on the same level as you, would it worth buying one cheaper Yoeleo or Winspace frame set instead of one from the super prestigious but super expensive brands to save a couple of thousands of Euros or Pounds? Hhahaha. Thanksn
top video dit Jasper
Good job Jasper! The burning question in many of us might be the bike question: How does that bike compared to the rest of the superbikes you have ridden before? Even if you are a rider with the same powercurve of yours and races on the same level as you, would it worth buying one cheaper Yoeleo or Winspace frame set instead of one from the super prestigious but super expensive brands to save a couple of thousands of Euros or Pounds?
Cheers
Do you have 12left over to spend on a bike?
If yes, spend it. If no, that gives you the answer.
You can get dura ace di2 carbon bike with high end (Chinese) wheels for less than half the money so I’d say easy choice…
@@jasperverkuijl Thanks, I am definitely not looking to spend 10+ thousand Euros on a bicycle haha.
