- While I'm still here in Suffolk, I thought it would be fun to share my travel art kit with you! I feel like I've managed to really pare down my materials this time, and they easily fit into a fairly small backpack. The Art Toolkit palettes have been a game changer - I'm so glad I decided to splurge and get a couple of them earlier in the year!
This video is pretty low tech because I don't have all of my usual filming equipment here with me, so I'm making do with what I have. I hope that you at least find it interesting or useful! :)

Just a little tip when you’re using gouache in pans for travel or in studio situation if you want it in pans . When you are squeezing gouache in the pan, if you put drop of honey in your wet paints. Mix it well and let dry. Your gouache will not crack, and re-wet like a dream.
Great tip, thank you!
Thank you! I'm currently preparing my first gouache pan palette for a trip and this is really helpful! ❤
Glycerine works well, too, in stopping cracking.
but then you are "reformulating" the gouache. which makes is handle differently than out of the tube....
I love seeing your travel kit! For anyone reading this, For thin gouache in a thin palette, two ways you can reduce cracking is: 1. After it dries and starts to crack a little, pour in a little more gouache to "fill it in" then by the time that dries it's more dense. 2. Add a small drop or two of gum arabic as you pour, which increases the strength of the binder and less likely to crumble.
Thanks Sarah! Good tip. :) I've tried the first one myself and it worked well!
Just gotta say thank you for reminding me I already have a collapsible water pot hidden in my junk bin of art supplies. Now I am rediscovering some other supplies I had forgotten about 😅 An almost full box of black wing pencils and lots of loose watercolor tubes lol
Ha ha, you're welcome!
I love seeing other artists travel kits. I also love the bark Inktense pencil. Sometimes I just take it and a water brush and do monochromatic sketches when I go for walks. I can color or paint on top of them when I get home if I wish.
Your twilight landscape is lovely even unfinished as it is.
Thank you! The Bark Inktense is such a useful pencil - it's perfect for monochromatic sketches. :)
Always love watching what artists put in their travel kits - love your gouache colour range. 🙏💜
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for posting this! I have been constantly changing my travel kit lately (perhaps going through the moods of the seasons changing) and it’s so inspiring to see the kinds of supplies other artists bring. The paintings in your sketchbook are lovely, as are the mini ink drawings!
Thanks so much, Renee! I change mine around quite often too. :)
Oh, this is a treat! A new video! Can't wait to watch it! 🎉
Hope you enjoy it!
An artist take on 'travelling light',The art toolkit palettes are genius, you've really refined your travel kit so brilliantly, but it still allows you to create work in your style. The little Stonehenge pads are great too, perfect for travel.Great to see work in progress too and the miniature ink drawings look great too.Hope being at Mum's is a change to re-charge and re-charge creatively too,and be inspired by her amazing garden.(Matt) P s must be great as well to see your cat too
Thanks Matt! I'm so pleased I invested in the Art Toolkit palettes. I find I'm using them a lot, both in the studio and outside! It's been lovely seeing my mum and little Issey again. How's Monet?!
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you for asking Monet is doing well,he is definitely a studio cat/muse,though he has chewed up one or two of my brushes, little tinker that he is!,glad you can have some feline chill time with Issey(Matt)
Fab video, Natasha. Such great info. No excuse not to get out there, eh? Perfect. 😊
Thanks Jan! 🧡
Enjoy your visit! I love your color palettes!
Thank you so much! It's lovely here, I've had such a nice visit!
Hello Natasha, thank you for making your videos despite less tech:). It's great! But difficult for you to hold the camera. I always find it difficult to pack my art supplies for our trip to Cornwall. I could actually take everthing with me:))). It's helpful that you show that it can be done with less art supplies. Your little mini inks drawings look great. I also like the Sakura microns because they are actually permanent. I have a lot of black ones that don't do that even though they say waterproof. I was pleased that Sarah wrote the tip with gum arabic. My colours also cracked and I tried it with that too. I often use the Bark Inktense pencil too. I wish you and your mum a lovely time together in her wonderful cottage. Enjoy it:)). Have a lovely day. Gabi🧡
Thank you, Gabi! I always want to take all my art supplies with me too, but I'm trying to learn some restraint - I do find it hard though! I'll always want whichever supplies I haven't brought with me. ;) I hope that you have had a lovely day too!
You did brilliantly filming all of that with one hand👏🏼 I love your twilight work in progress😍 My Clairfontaine 20x20 sketchbook arrived yesterday, it’s my first time trying that brand so it’s pleasing to hear some good feedback about it☺️
Thank you! And it's honestly one of my favourite sketchbooks ever. :)
I love your twilight landscape, it's beautiful. The Art Toolkit Pocket Palette looks very useful, thanks for sharing your recommendations. And hello to Amanda! 😂
Ha ha, thank you! Amanda says hello back!
Thanks for sharing your travel kit! Mine is always a work in progress and I like seeing what other artists put in theirs.
Mine changes quite often, but these Art Toolkit palettes will become a regular feature, I think!
Thank you for sharing this...with one hand. 😆 I love seeing how watercolor artists pack for travel. I am constantly updating and changing mine. I have that Derwent Chinese White and the Inktense Bark. I have Luminance pencils on my list for future purchases. I love Payne's Grey in paints and pencils.
I can't believe that I managed to make this video one-handed!
@@NatashaNewtonArt you did great.
Loved this video! It's so fun to see what artists carry in their travel kits. P.S. you have a really steady hand :D
Thank you! 🧡
Always love seeing travel kits! I love my art toolkit palettes for travel with watercolour or gouache (but I seem to have a fascination with travel watercolour palettes in general 😅). Beautiful pen roll case and selection of pencils!
Thank you! I always find other people's travel kits fascinating too. :)
I enjoy seeing what other artists choose to bring with them for a minimal kit.
I got the mini Sendak roll recently . I love it. It works great for on location drawing. It was after seeing your Sendak roll that I went, oh that looks worth it. 😅
I use it all the time - I love it! Such a useful piece of kit. So glad you invested in one too!
Great! Thank you
I’ve just purchased the Peg and Awl Sendak artist roll from Jackson’s it’s very expensive but think it will be very useful for me on my travels and also at home as I do not have the space for a separate studio and it will keep my favourite art supplies together that I use the most to get out of my IKEA drawer unit that I have in my living room to do my art. I have a peg and Awl pouch which has all my pencils and Pitt markers and have loved using this but to have them in the artists roll will be much easier to have them where you can see everything will be fantastic. So excited 😆 xxx
This is exciting news, Louise! I hope you'll love it and use it as much as I do mine. :) xxx
your gouache palettes are so cute! I've always wanted to try taking gouache for plein air but scared it might crack everywhere in a palette like this
Not much of a problem so far, I'm pleased to report! :)
Natasha. Nice to meet you-so epic shots~)
I bought Mijello titanium gouache before my last trip and put it in a folio palette too. It said it wouldn’t crack like other gouache and really it’s true. There’s a tiny bit of cracking in the raw umber but the rest is pretty good. I have a video for it on my channel.
That's good to know! :)
Great video!! is there anyway that you could name all the colors in both of your gouache art kit palettes? They look so very interesting!
Hopefully once I get back to my studio in Surrey, I will be able to! Maybe I'll feature it in a future video. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt I would LOVE that!!! Thanks for your response!
@@NatashaNewtonArt I was still wondering if you would be able to mention the colors in your large Gouache palette in this video. 😊
Lovely travel art kit. This was a very useful video. I love the palette’s how much did you pay for postage and taxes to the Uk from America as the palette’s are from America and would love one of those and was just wondering if it is really expensive to order from art tool kit?. Hope you’re enjoying your time with your Mum in Suffolk. Sending you lots of love xxx 🥰
I can't remember how much I paid for postage, but it wasn't too bad considering it came from the US! I also didn't have to pay any customs fees/taxes, but I may have just been lucky? Hope you're having a lovely weekend and enjoying the Spring, Louise! xxx
Artemiranda ( based in Spain) sells them too if that is any good?
@@TaraDreams Thankyou for the recommendation I will take a look x
Joann's Fabrics has a plastic container that has 30 little containers inside .i got one and put some of my watercolor tube paints in them.
Great idea!
@@NatashaNewtonArt I also labeled them the colors I put in them too
Show us Amanda! xxxxx
LOL!
Where you get that pencil case
And tbat art fold kit
Also try Liquitex Gouache
They're all listed in the description box below the video. :) I've tried Liquitex gouache and liked it!
Would be nice just watch through your two palettes
that's still a big "travel" kit... I have narrowed down my kit to the same watercolor palette but with a mini water brush, portable sable brush and 2 uni pin makers, a mechanical pencil and mini spray bottle... fits in a small zippered bag and couldn't be happier.
Gouache palettes > eyeshadow palettes 😅❤
I know what you mean!
Thanks for clarifying the hand...it was a bit creepy haha 😅
Ha ha, the ghostly hand. 👻
