Can’t believe I’m just watching you Kimberly on this technique……it is so awesome and you always teach us so well. Even if it’s 9 years later…… I am forever learning from you! Thank you! ❤❤❤
Oh my gosh. I am so excited. I have lost sleep worried about this quilt I’m making for my grandson’s wedding. Looooook at the beautiful mitered corner. Only three more to go. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you for such wonderful instructions 🙌🏻
I have gone back to this tutorial several times while mitering borders. I'm so hooked on mitered borders, I do them even with solid fabrics to get a clean, professional look! Kimberly is an excellent instructor (I have used many of her tutorials) - they are clear, organized, have easy-to-see steps, and I love the way they move quickly through sewing or cutting when enough instruction has been given. Fantastic job, Fat Quarter Shop!
OUTSTANDING instructions! This is THE clearest video I've seen on how to do this - AND - you showed it with stripes - YIKES! When I first saw the striped fabric, I thought, "Why would she demonstrate an already tricky method with a more difficult-to-work-with fabric print?" But your extremely detailed and clear instructions made it look like a piece of cake to use striped fabric. Even your thoughtful answers to other viewers questions in the comment section tell us if the striped fabric is a little wonky and not printed on the grain, you ignore the grain and cut on the stripe and the completed quilt top will still come out finished just fine. And then as a bonus, you show us at the end how easy it would be to use this method using TWO borders! I simply LOVE how professional your tutorials are in every way. From your Accurate Measurements and Every-Detail-Matters instructions in assembling your quilt to the cameraman's filming angle (from the sewist's point of view and lovely close-ups) and the lighting & video quality, I feel like I've had you personally come to my home and give me an expensive one-on-one Master's Degree sewing lesson. Using an obviously contrasting thread to make the visual perfectly clear (what you normally wouldn't want to do to avoid it showing through the finished quilt) might just seem like icing on the cake but it's oh so helpful in clarifying your instructions. Your sacrificing costly fabric in this way adds to the gift's quality of your tutorials. Thanks so much for your research, preparation time (and most likely rehearsal sessions), financial resources, and professionalism to you, your cameraman, and other staff involved who offer these excellent tutorials to us. Kimberly, you inspire us with with your upbeat "you can do this too" style of communication; I appreciate that. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends.
I have watched 20 or more videos and YOURS is the BEST wish I had watched it first!!! No one else was giving me the formula of how long to cut my boarders thank you
I used this method today and all my corners turned out great! This is my first time adding borders. Not to mention mitered borders! I'm very pleased. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I had to go back and watch it again because I didn't turn my quilt over. So I had to double check it.
I just finished 2 pillows with your instructions. I actually cut cross stitch that I sewed and used that as the middle of the pillow. I was amazed that it worked. Twice! The only frustration I had was with the machine. The material was so thick it kept beeping at me “main motor overload” But it eventually worked. Thank you so much for being so thorough. The step by step instructions are perfect. Easier video to follow than any of the others I’ve watched. 2 Xmas presents are done.
Still relevant. I have been quilting a long time, and recently had a pattern with a triple border so I wanted to use the mitered corners in order to simplify the process. Happy to find this older post by Kimberly to refresh my knowledge. Thank you!
I was already so impressed with the clarity and simplicity of these instructions and then bam! right at the end you drop a nugget about sewing borders together before mitering them! totally something I would've mulled over for ever trying to figure it out on my own. thank you!
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. From beginning to end, the instructions are clear and detailed, but nothing unnecessary. The camera work is what really makes it stand out, because the views are close up and show precise techniques. Thank you.
I am attempting my first mitered quilt borders tomorrow and found this tutorial very helpful. It provided very detailed instructions and some tips not included in the other tutorials I viewed. I have full confidence that my first mitered borders will turn out great. Thank you!
Hi Kimberley, I just wanted to tell you how much I have been enjoying your RUclips tutorials. It is so much easier to watch somebody doing something than to try and figure it out from a book. Thank you. Sue-Anne from Australia x
You give all the important details…such as flipping the seams when sewing the boarder to avoid puckering. I am new to this and tried this once before with failure. I feel confident mitring will work out this time!
This works like magic!!! I followed your directions to the letter and it came out perfectly -- lays flat and NO puckers. It definitely takes my quilting up a notch. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
As so many have said, THANK YOU! The video is Great! I couldn't have done it with out it. I must say as a new quilter, videos like this really help me and I don't have to pester the wife as much for her help in bailing me out of something that requires major sewing surgery. Thanks again, Mark
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I had nightmares all night trying to remember how to easily miter the borders on my quilt. I love your tutorials. You are so clear in your explanations.
Thank you for this tutorial on mitering borders. You made is much simpler that the directions that I have read in the past. It used to scare me to even think about mitering a border, but thanks to your tutorial I feel that I would be able to do it. Thanks again
Thank you! I just finished putting my first mitered border on a quilt! I love it! It wasn't nearly as daunting as I imagined thanks to your clear instructions!
Oh my! Thank you so much, Kim, for such a great video! I now have perfectly mitred borders, on my very first pieced quilt, a Half Square Triangle Around the World Quilt! Thanks to Kim at Fat Quarter Shop and Jennie Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company. My two favourite experts!
+Suzanne Stiles - I am making that same quilt!! would like to see pics of yours I used 2 pckgs of the the 10" squares in order to make it a king size quilt and now would like mitered corners - I am hoping I can figure this out :)
Kimberly you continue to inspire me to be the best quilter I can be. I have made mitered corners previously, but needed a refresher. Your video has helped me prefect my mitered corners. No puckers, no weird pleats, no spaces. Thank you !!! You ROCK!!!!
I had a complicated border with multiple stripes and detail. I thought it would be a nightmare, but I followed this tutorial to a T - it came out perfect and I am thrilled! Thank you so so much!!!
Thank you kimberly. I watched lots of vids on mitering boarders, but your method seems to be the most clear and easy of all. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
I have been quilting for many years and have always avoided mitering corners with stripes. I can't thank you enough for making this video! Your demonstration is so clear and my borders now look perfect!
Very beautifully and simplified - you explained it so well. Took the mystery out of the miter. Loved this video. I can't wait to try this out on my next project. Definitely going into my 'favorites'.
I have always stayed away from mitered borders because it looked too difficult but you have made it look easier. I may just give it a try on my next quilt. Thanks.
I was so afraid of doing mitered borders on my latest quilt project. You made it so simple! Thank you. It turned out beautifully. I did get one small pucker, but being that it was my first time, I can live with it. It was probably user error more than anything! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
This was great. I was very apprehensive about doing a mitered border on a quilt top I have been workingon for a year. You made it so easy to follow and it went together easily.
MitchPR08 I also am making not only my first quilt top but a queen sized my boarders are 8.5" on my bandanna quilt for the long-armer to have enough to work with. So far so good about to sew my first two miters on opposite diagonal corners.
As always great video…this is the one I turn to to remember how to miter borders. I can get straight to the info I need without having to wade through fluff.
Thank you for the great tutorial! I wrote down the instructions for myself while watching the video and will save them in my sewing spreadsheet where I keep standard measurements and instructions for myself. It's easier for me to compile information and for my memory if I write things down. If anyone wants a copy of the written instructions, message me.
I can’t thank you enough! This was my first attempt and the border pattern was serpentine. I got clean, flat corners and a pattern match!! Best instructional video ever!
Hi Kimberly! You explain everything so superbly clear! I love your videos! I am a quilting newbie and I’ve learnt so much from you. I always look forward to these excellent videos so please continue to do them! Thank You Very Much!
You are the Bomb Kimberly...that means the best! My borders turned out fabulous. The directions that came with the baby quilt kit came across in Latin to me! Your video makes it super simple for this simple mind I have. During this pandemic you have inspired my quilting desires! Muchos Gracias Chica, Jeannette Godwin
GREAT VIDEO I learn so much from watching your tutorials. This is another great one. I love the look of these wide borders. Done with a wide mitered look. Thanks again
I may not need the info regarding stripes this time, but it’s very useful for the future. Also, the formula about the length of the border strips is great! This video is clear and slow enough to see all the details. Well done, Fat Quarter Shop!
Have you ever wondered how you can perfectly frame your quilt by mitering the borders? Kimberly is here to explain this fun and fast technique. You will be mitering in no time with these tips and tricks.
Thank you so much, I have never done this before and reading the pattern, I was so confused, I feel confident that I can go ahead now after watching this video, thank you again for such a lovely explanation!
Urg I forgot to measure out from the center on one side and ended up with a pregnant border. My fault because your instructions were perfect. All the other sides came out great, and you're right, flipping that seam allowance makes ALL the difference. Thanks KJ!!
I was struggling to follow the written directions for mitered borders on a quilt kit I purchased. I'm going to suggest they add a link to your excellent tutorial. Thank you, especially the tip about sewing all borders together and then mitering the set.
Thank you! My first project didn’t turn out quite perfect, but it’s way better than I thought it would be, especially since I tried a new technique using knits. It definitely would have failed without a how-to to reference 10 times.
Hi Mary Edgar! If you have a quilt top bigger than WOF you will need to piece your border. If I have a striped print I sew a straight seam and if I have any other type of print I piece on the diagonal. Either will work for solids. I do not put the seam in the center but I do make sure it is not too close to the top of bottom.
I've been quilting for several years now and this is the first mitered border I've done. I too, looked and read many, many tutorials on this topic, your was by far the easier and simplest to understand and follow. My miter border came out perfectly. My only challenge was that I did a triple border. I did sew all my strips together, however I was short on my inner border strip. Easy to fix, I just added another strip and finished it out. It would be helpful if you could tell us how to calculate for multiple borders. My middle and outer border, I cut way to much and the inner border, I needed to cut and extra strip.
Thank you for posting this excellent tutorial. I have 4 perfectly mitred corners.
Great lesson on mitered borders.
Easiest way I have seen.
Thanks.
Can’t believe I’m just watching you Kimberly on this technique……it is so awesome and you always teach us so well. Even if it’s 9 years later…… I am forever learning from you! Thank you! ❤❤❤

Someone is still watching and learning. Very well demonstrated and clear instructions! Thank you!
I love miter borders....I just don't make enough quilts to remember how to do it. You are my go-to when I do make them.
Watched other videos on mitering corners and this one is the best. Easiest to understand and execute! Thank you!
Thank You for the perfect tutorial on Mitered corners.
