It's a little overwhelming not gonna lie. At one point next season we'll be forced to introduce some basic weed killer to go after the morning glory and the spurge.
That grass you cannot identify is either Bentgrass or Nimbewill, I hit mine with Tenacity and that is exactly what it looks like 7 days after Tenacity app. Just a note you should apply 1 more app of Tenacity 14 days after first app for a sure kill!!! Strike that as you already over seeded, if you got any germination on your new seed you cannot reapply until at least 30days. As a Rule of thumb with Tenacity you should use it 2 weeks prior to over seed, then reapply at seed time for best results!
Great suggestions and feedback. It's clearly on the label. I'm on a short time window to get the seed to germinate and didn't have adequate time. I'm going to make this suggestion in the next video for sure. I'm betting that the morning frost will stop all the biennial activity and leave it to the spring to fight the good fight once again.

There are many unmentionables out there, chickweed, clover, wild violets, and dandelions. I have ordered tenacity to try and get ahead of those pesty weeds for once. Hi RS! Tenacity is good for annual grasses, clover and some others but it's expensive for what it is. Tzone will be more aggressive on killing weeds and cheaper per serving. So if you aren't planning on seeding then buy tzone or speed zone
I have a neighbor and I take care of her lawn as well as mine, previous years for about 3 year, I have kept it looking pretty good until this year when a lot of Annual bluegrass poa has sprung up, but her sister live in town and has put out hundreds of dollars on weed killers and she said she was not killing any of them. I told her she needed to tell her sister that she's throwing money away if she isn't willing to water and get a good 6 to 8 inch soil saturation. The part of my lawn that is being overtaken by this poa grass is crazy, especially since I spray and pull weeds every year! I think I pull anywhere from 7 to 10 5 gallon buckets of weeds every year between her yard and mine. I just measured our yards and between the two of us, we have 10,111 sqft. It takes about 10 gallons of spray every time I spray our yard. I have a 4 gallon backpack sprayer that has the lever pump on the left side, so it makes it a bit easier. Came to watch again about tenacity and I found for a more broad leaf killer I mix Speed Zone with tenacity. Speed Zone does not kill any type of grass so it a good mix to together weeds and bad grass like crab grass Johnson and so on. Thanks really like you video.
Tenacity is an amazing product but Like Chad says, you gotta do multiple apps. I've been trying to control bentgrass with it. 3 times, ive done 2 apps, 2 weeks apart and it still hasn't controlled it. It definitely wipes out everything else though and doesn't harm the good grass.
I just made a 2nd app of Tenacity to an established turf after about 4 weeks of the last. Diluted it in liquid fert and applied using Ortho Dial N Spray hose end sprayer. Much quicker than the backpack method.
Pest and Lawn Ginja : Thanks. The only thing about the hose end sprayer, I don’t know the concentration coming out of the nozzle. Tenacity label says to mix at the rate of 4 to 8 oz per 30 gal water. So I made a very dilute mixture initially and had to refill the sprayer multiple times, as opposed to the back sprayer which is continuous. Will see what happens. Nice job on the video, interested to see the final result.
I purchased tenacity, surfactant including the blue dye. I have not sprayed tenacity let. Do to the rain fall . I water for 40 minutes per zone. I believe i have 7 zones. Plus my yard is over 1400 square foot.
Hey Ginja, I realize this is awhile back, but I used Tenacity last fall and plug aerated, over seeded with good tall fescue. My lawn is looking pretty darn good but I wanted to ask you, if as a preventive, can I apply Tenacity to a good portion of my lawn, total 10,000 sq.ft., to keep weeds out, mainly Nimblewill from taking hold again ? Should I just spot spray any weeds I see, or can I spray a preventive blanket spray of Tenacity ? Thank you, John
I used Tenacity last Fall for the first time and had really good results in eliminating weeds, especially the bad goosegrass problem I had. In anticipation of the Spring, can Inuse Tenacity without a surfactant since I have very few broadleaf weeds at this time. My thinking is no surfactant will enable a Tenacity to be easily watered into the soil. I can then spot spray any other areas with visible weeds, like clover.
using tenacity as a pre emergent works great without a surfactant present. However with that said there are much cheaper pre emergent products on the market that last far longer ie. prodiamine. Prodiamine can also be used jointly with tenacity. I use tenacity for it's pre emergent properties when I'm overseeding or have a lawn riddled with clover and oxalis.
I've been using Tenacity for years. I use it on turf type tall fescue and Blue grass. The tall fescue you have is generic tall fescue. Your best bet is to use Ornamec 170 along with the tenacity. I've had great success with clearing out the bad tall fescue while keeping the turf type. I prefer the blend of fescue and blue grass because it is more disease resistant. Tenacity whitens fescue. It will recover. The best thing to do is apply tenacity a second time about 21 days later. and reseed with bluegrass. BTW that grass with the hairlike structure is no way nimbilewill. Tenacity is designed to eradicate nimblewill. That is the reason I starte using it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to try the Ornamec 170. I was kinda shocked that some of the bunching tall fescue did indeed die. I'd be curious to see if I could knock out more using the ornamec 170. I've only ran into nimblewill a few times in my area. It typically matts more than what I encountered.
The grass you had trouble to id, looks like it could be Nimblewill. I just sprayed my whole yard with Tenacity, 10,000 sq ft. I have quite a bit of Nimblewill,, it spreads more and more each year.. My lawn is tall fescue. I also have problems each year in some areas with brown patch, so I also applied Scotts DiseaseEx. Too soon yet to know the results. I'm prepping my lawn to do a aerate and over seed with tall fescue and apply starter fert. One thing I'm going to try later this fall, go to local farm co-op that sells to mostly farmers, and get me some Urea. The pellet size of this is huge compared to most granular fertilizer. I had very good success with Urea in previous years.
Reapply Tenacity in spring for full weed kill effect as a pre-emergent post- emergent weed kill hernicide. Blue dye also helps when spot spraying crab grass.
Awesome video, and even better information. I kinda have a 2-part question. First, is it to late in the season now to put down a weed killer or Tenacity? Second, my KBG seeds have geminated and are a happy 31 days old. Is it bad, or ok to go after the baby weeds coming up with a herbicide or Tenacity, or a preventer.
Great questions Chris. 1. the ground temps should be above 50 / 55 degrees for tenacity to work. It works by blocking chlorophyl uptake. If the plant isn't actively feeding or growing it won't work well. 2. I wouldn't recommend ANY herbicide treatments for 90 days after the seeding. Which means any active weeds coming up should be pulled by hand or an isolated spot spray that only contacts the weed. Hope that helps clarify things.
Love that stuff. Doesn’t work all that well on Broadleaf’s in my experience. I use it for late crabgrass and it does a number on dandelion and clovers of all kind. Also, it is extremely hard on all fescues and I have seeded fescue and sprayed tenacity and it just ended up killing it, only the bluegrass seeds survived. Doesn’t work on spurge either, it effects it but doesn’t finish, it’s more or less a grassy weed killer.
I'm really hoping that it will kill bunching tall fescue. I've read mixed reviews. I'm going to do several tests as well. Doesn't surprise me that the spurge and morning glory are unaffected by tenacity. Seems like the vine weeds are too tolerant.
For Quackgrass, the only thing I've found that works now that MSMA isn't allowed, is to hit it with Tenacity to stress it, and then hit it with Quinclorac 7 - 10 days afterwards. It will turn red/purple when stressed, that's how you know it's working. It might require a followup treatment 20-30 days afterwards. MSMA is pretty much the only thing I can think of that will target the clumping fescue, but again it's banned for home use now. Pulling it or roundup is pretty much the only options now.
LG, make sure you read up on it for your area and application, it's been heavily regulated now. It is not a product you ever want to do a blanket application with now. If I recall you cannot use it as part of a Lawncare business application, though the ban was modified so you'll have to do some research and check your local laws. I know it was modified to allow use in the Cotton Industry, Golf courses (Spot spray only, sub 100sqft applications, not to exceed 25% unless used on a new course), some highway applications, and Sod farm applications.
We are going to follow this whole procedure on our yard - aerating/overseeding and using tenacity. We're located in NE Tennessee, is it to late in the year to start this process here? Thanks and great job documentating this whole process...
I would change one thing. I would do my first tenacity application and wait three weeks until the second and seed on the second application. Having played with tenacity it's important to remember it takes multiple applications to get the weeds to die. If you are getting close to 40 degree night time temps I wouldn't use tenacity. I would wait to the spring time.

HAHAHA, I'll let him know. He'll be pleased to hear that. I'm expecting that 50% of the weeds will be controlled. So much of the weed population is spurge and I don't anticipate it'll be affected.

Ginja, After fall overseeding of mainly Turf Type Tall Fescue and you have thin spots throughout....will just mulch mowing eventually fill in those areas or is TTTF a grass type that won't "creep" into those areas meaning you'll have to continue(in the late spring after pre-emergent) to add new seed until you achieve a thick lawn?
Hey Scott. This is a great question. The question is if the TTTF you have is laterally moving rhizomatous tall fescue. There were studies done over the last 5 to 10 years that exposed a problem with the TTTF that it does not laterally self repair. Now, with that said the Barenbrug TTTF with RTF does move laterally from what I've seen. IMO it's not as agressive as the Kentucky bluegrass but it does move. If I were in your same situation and you haven't applied a pre emergent in the last 90 days I would overseed those areas and cover them with peat moss.

So when is it too hot to use Tenacity, and what else would be good when it IS really hot? By the way, my lawn in a project in process, and I'm in south Sandy, if you want to take a look at it and / or do a video on it. Last year wiped a lot of the lawn out, between PROBABLY heat, drought, some fungus, and some grubs, insects. I seeded the effected parts on May 5, and then went back and tried to reseed some bare areas on May 25, 2022. Now I'm wondering about weeds, and wondering if the growth will eventually cover ALL of the areas, and not just where germination is obvious.
Should I use tenacity as a preventive or curative? I just put down prodiamine and was thinking I would put it down again in the spring. I don't have very many weeds but I have lots of that miserable poa annua.
It works as both preventive and curative. it's an interesting chemical. It does take multiple treatments. I would recommend making sure that the weed control you're after is listed on the label before purchasing.
We recently planted Diamondia Margaretae (silver carpet) in our backyard as a ground cover for a slope and we're getting some weeds. What is your consideration to use Tenacity on/around silver carpet to control weeds?
I have zero experience with this ground cover. I do know it's a perennial plant and may be susceptible to herbicide damages. My suggestion is to test a small area out before spraying it with anything. You can do a granular pre emergent and should be fine.
Great video, I do have a question, I know it's about 2 days before and after to start mowing, but if you're over seeding how long would you wait before you mow. Also do you cut a little lower so the new grass seed can get more sun light? Thanks
Do you think the bunching tall fescue will take a couple treatments? I've been reading others saying they apply tenacity about 3x to the tall fescue and it is gone. Any luck trying it on fine fescue as well? We have patches of each in our KBG/Rye lawn... I've gotten the other weeds under control, but those grasses are tough!
He's got every weed in the book in his yard except Creeping Charlie and White Clover, which is the big majority of the problem I got. I'm still going to use Tenacity though in April maybe.

Tony D. Make sure you’re patient with it, I did my neighbors yard for late crabgrass and he got frustrated because he was impatient and thought it didn’t work, two weeks later he was praising the product up and down. It works but it does take time, good luck, and good purchase. Yes it is too late to seed, I live in Minnesota and it already reached 30 degrees. Unless you’re using a ridiculously quick germinating seed, even so you’d be risking it.
Just watch those night time and daytime temps. If it permanently gets below 50 degrees daytime and 30 degrees night time the plants will slow the feeding down to the point the Tenacity won't be effective. I'm going to resume in the spring once the ground temps get above 50 degrees. Thanks for watching Tony. You'll really love the products. Essential 1.0.1 is one of my favorites.
check the temps for Oct. & Nov. I should be good for Seed. Not sure but when you aration did you remove plugs from front lawn and leave in the back or just leave them everyplace. I would like to leave them also.
And I thought I had a weed patch lawn, some places the crab is so thick I can't tell if there is any actual turf grass growing lol. I been using 2-4-D products and it has thinned out the weeds and the grass is yellowed in places, not sure if its just stressed or a weed type grass.

I over seeded here on [Long Island like I told you after watching a different video and the tenacity is already starting to hammer stuff like clover and dandelions that ive noticed after only 8 or 9 days. I have an off topic question though in regards to seed. pennington makes what they call a northeast mix of mostly rye with some blue grass and a bit of fescue. Chad, did the spurge end up being killed off? I applied Tenacity on my newly planted Buffalo grass/Blue Grama native grass in northern Colorado 2 weeks ago. We have a bunch of spurge and it seems to be lighter in color but it still hanging on. Any ideas?
How do I prepare a clay and sand base plot for new install of Bermuda grass possibly sod or seed. What are your reccomendations? Should I add mulch and gypsum, and if so, at what quantities per square foot? Also I am curious about your thoughts on sprinklers. What product to use, what distances and what tolerances sprinklers are confined to. I am a EMT working on a side project at my family home and you strike me as very knowledgeable. PLEASE HELP!!!
Hey Michael. Thanks for reaching out. It's common to prep the area by bringing in 3 to 5" of topsoil. That would be the best option. Luckily for you bermuda will grow just about anywhere. If you don't want to spend the money on top soil You could do about 50lbs per 1000ft2 of humates and gypsum if your ph is alkaline or lime if its acidic. As for sprinklers. It will all depend on the type of heads you're going to be using. There are several free apps provided by manufactures of sprinklers. You can upload dimensions and it will do the math for you. In my experience the most important part of the project is correct watering. I've had several different sprinkler setups in the homes I've owned. They were all different heads types. What I can tell you is the only thing that matters is coverage. As long as the coverage is even and proper it doesn't matter what kind of heads you end up with. It's the calibration of the heads and understanding water output that matters the most. To answer your question, at the current moment I have hunter mp rotator heads. I find these are great for homes with 6 stations or less. The water output is slow. In other words you have to run your sprinklers for a very long time to get the right amount of water on the lawn. There are benefits to this. The drawback is time.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you so for the advice, 3"-5" is probably the route I will go since I can get some nice mulch for about $15 a yard from a local winery. I will probably rent a roller to gently pack it down a bit then install the grass. Right now I am prepping for sprinkler installation and have looked at some of the programs available for setting up a coverage area. Is there a specific program you prefer to use for sprinkler layout and design? Thanks again for the great vids!
If you're looking for the best use for your water the hunter mp rotators are great. But they are very slow flowing. It's important to know that because you have to run the sprinkler FOREVER to get the proper amount of water onto the lawn. If you don't have more than 5 to 7 zones you'd do well with those heads. I water two to three times a week for 2 hours per station.
Great question Bobblecast. The label is extremely vague. For KBG to reach full maturity it takes about 45 days on average. Sometimes longer. You are completely right that I should have done and additional application before putting the seed down. Unfortunately when the opportunity arose to do the video there wasn't enough time, due to weather constraints, to do 2 applications. I would advise everyone in RUclips land to do at least 1 application 2 weeks prior to the overseed application.
How was it on crabgrass And nuts edge I tried to Q4 for the first Time to kill broadleaf, Nutsedge and crab grass mix it at the 3 ounces per thousand and eight and it really wasn’t that great I’m thinking 3 1/2 ounces
I’ve never been a fan of q4. Per the label it takes multiple shots due to the lower dose of the herbicide in charge of killing annual grasses. Tenacity works great when applied correctly. I will say if you’re going to apply to an entire yard you’re better off using quinclorac

Okay Ninja. I took your Tenacity Challenge on my KBG lawn... my front yard going on it’s second year, while the back was planted last October. The front yard took very, very well. Within 7 days the majority of the yard was white. It was scary and cool at the same time. It rained on the 8th day and really turned white. Most of the white cleared after mowing after 10 days. The back yard was kinda patchy here and there with hardly any white. I figured maybe the weeds in the backyard weren’t really growing much, so I watered it, fed it and got them growing again. I put down a second application yesterday and looking for better results. My question is.... what to do with the weeds after they die? Some of the whitened weeds are turning brown so I’m thinking death. Do we dig them out, rake them off, or leave them. Maybe leave them, put some seeds on top with a bit of top soil on it. What do you recommend?
Depends in how thick your grass is. If you have thistle dig it out. If you're impatient dig them out. They dont disappear like the commercials Male it seem. Eventually the grass will crowd out the dead. But itll take a while.
Tenacity is ideal for 'problem' weeds that are not affected by more cost-effective dicamba, dimethelamine, etc. I don't think Tenacity has worked nearly as well on creeping charlie, dandelions or nutsedge for me. I use 'T' to get the Nimblewill out (my neighbor's lawn is almost all 'N' and he let's it run wild. Thanks, Mr. Neighbor)
Mesotrione is the main ingredient in Tenacity (40 percent). It is very expensive It averages about 7 dollars an ounce. I found the generic brand at a couple of websites with free shipping by the gallon for a about 1 dollar plus per ounce. 7 times cheaper. Just google the main ingredient and you can find it much cheaper
Jared, after looking around online I'm rather sure I have a little quackgrass in a portion of my lawn. Have you found anything in your experience to either reduce or eliminate it? Kind of sounds like a foul grass. lol
fusilade ii has it listed on the label. but the issue is it's not for use with kentucky bluegrass. for that reason I haven't tested it out because 99% of the lawns in my area are dominantly kentucky bluegrass.

Penn State listed the following concerning quackgrass treatement. Post Emergence: Atrazine, Fluazifop, Pronamide, Sethoxydim, Sulfosulfuron. Have you tried any of these and found they don't work? Been pulling them out the organic screwdriver method. Thinking of trying Roundup with a cotton glove. Such an annoying problem.
HELP: Tilled Lawn, Added Soil bc of Clay (Ohio), Added Kentucky Blue, Fertilizer, and entire Lawn is now Crab Grass and red stem weeds I've never seen before. tenacity can be sprayed at the same time while dropping seed. properly identifying the weed is what i recommend so you can get the right solution down to kill it. check weedalert.com
The schedule is small increments of water 3-5minutes at a time during the day. As many times during the day to keep the soil damp at all times. It’ll range between 3-5 times per day.
Ginja I need your superpowers again! I put prodiamine down about 2 weeks ago for poa annua, should I do another treatment now or wait till spring? My sprinkler system gets closed next week so I'm trying to figure it out before then. Thank you!

Very little chance I misapplied. I used as directed...3 times with correct surfactant and dye. I'm an Engineer and can follow directions. I'm watching my neighbors application also to see if he kills his crabgrass.
Send me a picture on Facebook. If you are as meticulous as you say it may be that what you feel is crabgrass may not be crabgrass. I too am very meticulous about my applications and spray rates. So far I haven't seen tenacity fail or not kill a target weed.

Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks for replying. I’ve got a lot of creeping Charlie that comes over from the neighbors property and crabgrass. I’ve been treating it the best I can and over seeding to try and suppress the weeds with the grass. I haven’t had much luck yet.
I bet. from what I've read you have to attack creeping charlie in the late fall when it's most vulnerable. I haven't had the pleasure to try it out but I've heard the rumors.
@@pestandlawnginja I just spot sprayed yesterday in NW New Jersey for both crab grass and Ground Ivey.... going on the pray and spray method hopefully it doesn't take out the whole lawn but if it does oops and oh well. It was neglected for many years before I bought the house.
@@pestandlawnginja But if you treat late fall, you will have bare patches all winter. I was going to treat in spring after it shows it's face, and then aerate, reseed and water a month later.
The concern is if the root does get deeply hurt by herbicide, so the weed is dead permanently. It is very usual that the herbicide can only temporally hurt the weed, and so you see the leaves fade and gone. Then the weed revives in next spring. Perhaps to dig out the hibernated root before spring is the complete solution.
when people don't calibrate properly and don't get the recommended dose down it can cause leaf wilt. digging the roots out defeats the purpose of using the herbicide. you're better off just digging the weeds out in the first place.

It's a little overwhelming not gonna lie. At one point next season we'll be forced to introduce some basic weed killer to go after the morning glory and the spurge.

That grass you cannot identify is either Bentgrass or Nimbewill, I hit mine with Tenacity and that is exactly what it looks like 7 days after Tenacity app. Just a note you should apply 1 more app of Tenacity 14 days after first app for a sure kill!!! Strike that as you already over seeded, if you got any germination on your new seed you cannot reapply until at least 30days. As a Rule of thumb with Tenacity you should use it 2 weeks prior to over seed, then reapply at seed time for best results!
Great suggestions and feedback. It's clearly on the label. I'm on a short time window to get the seed to germinate and didn't have adequate time. I'm going to make this suggestion in the next video for sure. I'm betting that the morning frost will stop all the biennial activity and leave it to the spring to fight the good fight once again.

Greeting from Central North Carolina. Stumbled onto your videos yesterday and plan to watch all of them. Currently working on a Winning Colors Fescue yard. There are many unmentionables out there, chickweed, clover, wild violets, and dandelions. I have ordered tenacity to try and get ahead of those pesty weeds for once. Hi RS! Tenacity is good for annual grasses, clover and some others but it's expensive for what it is. Tzone will be more aggressive on killing weeds and cheaper per serving. So if you aren't planning on seeding then buy tzone or speed zone

I have a neighbor and I take care of her lawn as well as mine, previous years for about 3 year, I have kept it looking pretty good until this year when a lot of Annual bluegrass poa has sprung up, but her sister live in town and has put out hundreds of dollars on weed killers and she said she was not killing any of them. I told her she needed to tell her sister that she's throwing money away if she isn't willing to water and get a good 6 to 8 inch soil saturation. The part of my lawn that is being overtaken by this poa grass is crazy, especially since I spray and pull weeds every year! I think I pull anywhere from 7 to 10 5 gallon buckets of weeds every year between her yard and mine. I just measured our yards and between the two of us, we have 10,111 sqft. It takes about 10 gallons of spray every time I spray our yard. I have a 4 gallon backpack sprayer that has the lever pump on the left side, so it makes it a bit easier. Came to watch again about tenacity and I found for a more broad leaf killer I mix Speed Zone with tenacity. Speed Zone does not kill any type of grass so it a good mix to together weeds and bad grass like crab grass Johnson and so on. Thanks really like you video.

Tenacity is an amazing product but Like Chad says, you gotta do multiple apps. I've been trying to control bentgrass with it. 3 times, ive done 2 apps, 2 weeks apart and it still hasn't controlled it. It definitely wipes out everything else though and doesn't harm the good grass.
So far I'm impressed. Doesn't seem to be too invasive on the bluegrass.
That’s true. Although for new seeding (or overseeding) they recommend to wait until after the 2nd mow before reapplying.
I saw that on the label. I'm guessing they feel that the grass is "established" if you can mow it twice. Interesting.
I just made a 2nd app of Tenacity to an established turf after about 4 weeks of the last. Diluted it in liquid fert and applied using Ortho Dial N Spray hose end sprayer. Much quicker than the backpack method.

Pest and Lawn Ginja : Thanks. The only thing about the hose end sprayer, I don’t know the concentration coming out of the nozzle. Tenacity label says to mix at the rate of 4 to 8 oz per 30 gal water. So I made a very dilute mixture initially and had to refill the sprayer multiple times, as opposed to the back sprayer which is continuous. Will see what happens. Nice job on the video, interested to see the final result.
yah. I'm thinking about making a video about how to calibrate the hose end sprayers. It's definitely not an easy out of the box experience.

Hey Ginja, I realize this is awhile back, but I used Tenacity last fall and plug aerated, over seeded with good tall fescue. My lawn is looking pretty darn good but I wanted to ask you, if as a preventive, can I apply Tenacity to a good portion of my lawn, total 10,000 sq.ft., to keep weeds out, mainly Nimblewill from taking hold again ? Should I just spot spray any weeds I see, or can I spray a preventive blanket spray of Tenacity ? Thank you, John
I used Tenacity last Fall for the first time and had really good results in eliminating weeds, especially the bad goosegrass problem I had. In anticipation of the Spring, can Inuse Tenacity without a surfactant since I have very few broadleaf weeds at this time. My thinking is no surfactant will enable a Tenacity to be easily watered into the soil. I can then spot spray any other areas with visible weeds, like clover.
using tenacity as a pre emergent works great without a surfactant present. However with that said there are much cheaper pre emergent products on the market that last far longer ie. prodiamine. Prodiamine can also be used jointly with tenacity. I use tenacity for it's pre emergent properties when I'm overseeding or have a lawn riddled with clover and oxalis.
I've been using Tenacity for years. I use it on turf type tall fescue and Blue grass. The tall fescue you have is generic tall fescue. Your best bet is to use Ornamec 170 along with the tenacity.
I've had great success with clearing out the bad tall fescue while keeping the turf type. I prefer the blend of fescue and blue grass because it is more disease resistant. Tenacity whitens fescue. It will recover.
The best thing to do is apply tenacity a second time about 21 days later. and reseed with bluegrass.
BTW that grass with the hairlike structure is no way nimbilewill. Tenacity is designed to eradicate nimblewill. That is the reason I starte using it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to try the Ornamec 170. I was kinda shocked that some of the bunching tall fescue did indeed die. I'd be curious to see if I could knock out more using the ornamec 170.
I've only ran into nimblewill a few times in my area. It typically matts more than what I encountered.
The grass you had trouble to id, looks like it could be Nimblewill.
I just sprayed my whole yard with Tenacity, 10,000 sq ft. I have quite a bit of Nimblewill,, it spreads more and more each year.. My lawn is tall fescue. I also have problems each year in some areas with brown patch, so I also applied Scotts DiseaseEx. Too soon yet to know the results. I'm prepping my lawn to do a aerate and over seed with tall fescue and apply starter fert.
One thing I'm going to try later this fall, go to local farm co-op that sells to mostly farmers, and get me some Urea. The pellet size of this is huge compared to most granular fertilizer. I had very good success with Urea in previous years.

Reapply Tenacity in spring for full weed kill effect as a pre-emergent post- emergent weed kill hernicide. Blue dye also helps when spot spraying crab grass.

I kinda have a 2-part question. First, is it to late in the season now to put down a weed killer or Tenacity? Second, my KBG seeds have geminated and are a happy 31 days old. Is it bad, or ok to go after the baby weeds coming up with a herbicide or Tenacity, or a preventer.
Great questions Chris. 1. the ground temps should be above 50 / 55 degrees for tenacity to work. It works by blocking chlorophyl uptake. If the plant isn't actively feeding or growing it won't work well. 2. I wouldn't recommend ANY herbicide treatments for 90 days after the seeding. Which means any active weeds coming up should be pulled by hand or an isolated spot spray that only contacts the weed. Hope that helps clarify things.
Love that stuff. Doesn’t work all that well on Broadleaf’s in my experience. I use it for late crabgrass and it does a number on dandelion and clovers of all kind. Also, it is extremely hard on all fescues and I have seeded fescue and sprayed tenacity and it just ended up killing it, only the bluegrass seeds survived. Doesn’t work on spurge either, it effects it but doesn’t finish, it’s more or less a grassy weed killer.
I'm really hoping that it will kill bunching tall fescue. I've read mixed reviews. I'm going to do several tests as well. Doesn't surprise me that the spurge and morning glory are unaffected by tenacity. Seems like the vine weeds are too tolerant.
For Quackgrass, the only thing I've found that works now that MSMA isn't allowed, is to hit it with Tenacity to stress it, and then hit it with Quinclorac 7 - 10 days afterwards. It will turn red/purple when stressed, that's how you know it's working. It might require a followup treatment 20-30 days afterwards. MSMA is pretty much the only thing I can think of that will target the clumping fescue, but again it's banned for home use now. Pulling it or roundup is pretty much the only options now.
Interesting Dave. I never tried MSMA, at the time it was around I didn't have an excuse to try it out.

LG, make sure you read up on it for your area and application, it's been heavily regulated now. It is not a product you ever want to do a blanket application with now. If I recall you cannot use it as part of a Lawncare business application, though the ban was modified so you'll have to do some research and check your local laws. I know it was modified to allow use in the Cotton Industry, Golf courses (Spot spray only, sub 100sqft applications, not to exceed 25% unless used on a new course), some highway applications, and Sod farm applications.

I would change one thing. I would do my first tenacity application and wait three weeks until the second and seed on the second application. Having played with tenacity it's important to remember it takes multiple applications to get the weeds to die. If you are getting close to 40 degree night time temps I wouldn't use tenacity. I would wait to the spring time.

Ginja, After fall overseeding of mainly Turf Type Tall Fescue and you have thin spots throughout....will just mulch mowing eventually fill in those areas or is TTTF a grass type that won't "creep" into those areas meaning you'll have to continue(in the late spring after pre-emergent) to add new seed until you achieve a thick lawn?
Hey Scott. This is a great question. The question is if the TTTF you have is laterally moving rhizomatous tall fescue. There were studies done over the last 5 to 10 years that exposed a problem with the TTTF that it does not laterally self repair. Now, with that said the Barenbrug TTTF with RTF does move laterally from what I've seen. IMO it's not as agressive as the Kentucky bluegrass but it does move. If I were in your same situation and you haven't applied a pre emergent in the last 90 days I would overseed those areas and cover them with peat moss.

So when is it too hot to use Tenacity, and what else would be good when it IS really hot? By the way, my lawn in a project in process, and I'm in south Sandy, if you want to take a look at it and / or do a video on it. Last year wiped a lot of the lawn out, between PROBABLY heat, drought, some fungus, and some grubs, insects. I seeded the effected parts on May 5, and then went back and tried to reseed some bare areas on May 25, 2022. Now I'm wondering about weeds, and wondering if the growth will eventually cover ALL of the areas, and not just where germination is obvious.
Should I use tenacity as a preventive or curative? I just put down prodiamine and was thinking I would put it down again in the spring. I don't have very many weeds but I have lots of that miserable poa annua.
It works as both preventive and curative. it's an interesting chemical. It does take multiple treatments. I would recommend making sure that the weed control you're after is listed on the label before purchasing.
We recently planted Diamondia Margaretae (silver carpet) in our backyard as a ground cover for a slope and we're getting some weeds. What is your consideration to use Tenacity on/around silver carpet to control weeds?
I have zero experience with this ground cover. I do know it's a perennial plant and may be susceptible to herbicide damages. My suggestion is to test a small area out before spraying it with anything. You can do a granular pre emergent and should be fine.

Do you think the bunching tall fescue will take a couple treatments? I've been reading others saying they apply tenacity about 3x to the tall fescue and it is gone. Any luck trying it on fine fescue as well? We have patches of each in our KBG/Rye lawn... I've gotten the other weeds under control, but those grasses are tough!
Great question. I really only killed about 10%. whos to say what variant or cultivar it was in the bunching tall fescue category.
He's got every weed in the book in his yard except Creeping Charlie and White Clover, which is the big majority of the problem I got. I'm still going to use Tenacity though in April maybe.

Make sure you’re patient with it, I did my neighbors yard for late crabgrass and he got frustrated because he was impatient and thought it didn’t work, two weeks later he was praising the product up and down. It works but it does take time, good luck, and good purchase. Yes it is too late to seed, I live in Minnesota and it already reached 30 degrees. Unless you’re using a ridiculously quick germinating seed, even so you’d be risking it.
Just watch those night time and daytime temps. If it permanently gets below 50 degrees daytime and 30 degrees night time the plants will slow the feeding down to the point the Tenacity won't be effective. I'm going to resume in the spring once the ground temps get above 50 degrees. Thanks for watching Tony. You'll really love the products. Essential 1.0.1 is one of my favorites.
check the temps for Oct. & Nov. I should be good for Seed. Not sure but when you aration did you remove plugs from front lawn and leave in the back or just leave them everyplace. I would like to leave them also.

I can't say for that exact product but I've mixed several fungicides together without any issues!

And I thought I had a weed patch lawn, some places the crab is so thick I can't tell if there is any actual turf grass growing lol. I been using 2-4-D products and it has thinned out the weeds and the grass is yellowed in places, not sure if its just stressed or a weed type grass.

Thanks, planning on some Prodiamine just before winter and another app of lime because the PH is really low. Just trying to make it look decent after years of neglect. I'm in the south (zone 6b), and things start growing in January and refreeze until April.

I over seeded here on [Long Island like I told you after watching a different video and the tenacity is already starting to hammer stuff like clover and dandelions that ive noticed after only 8 or 9 days. I have an off topic question though in regards to seed. pennington makes what they call a northeast mix of mostly rye with some blue grass and a bit of fescue. t-zone is my preferred product to combat spurge but there's no mention of for use on buffalo on the label so its difficult for me to recommend.

How do I prepare a clay and sand base plot for new install of Bermuda grass possibly sod or seed. What are your reccomendations? Should I add mulch and gypsum, and if so, at what quantities per square foot? Also I am curious about your thoughts on sprinklers. What product to use, what distances and what tolerances sprinklers are confined to. I am a EMT working on a side project at my family home and you strike me as very knowledgeable. PLEASE HELP!!!
Hey Michael. Thanks for reaching out. It's common to prep the area by bringing in 3 to 5" of topsoil. That would be the best option. Luckily for you bermuda will grow just about anywhere. If you don't want to spend the money on top soil You could do about 50lbs per 1000ft2 of humates and gypsum if your ph is alkaline or lime if its acidic.
As for sprinklers. It will all depend on the type of heads you're going to be using. There are several free apps provided by manufactures of sprinklers. You can upload dimensions and it will do the math for you. In my experience the most important part of the project is correct watering.
I've had several different sprinkler setups in the homes I've owned. They were all different heads types. What I can tell you is the only thing that matters is coverage. As long as the coverage is even and proper it doesn't matter what kind of heads you end up with. It's the calibration of the heads and understanding water output that matters the most.
To answer your question, at the current moment I have hunter mp rotator heads. I find these are great for homes with 6 stations or less. The water output is slow. In other words you have to run your sprinklers for a very long time to get the right amount of water on the lawn. There are benefits to this. The drawback is time.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you so for the advice, 3"-5" is probably the route I will go since I can get some nice mulch for about $15 a yard from a local winery. I will probably rent a roller to gently pack it down a bit then install the grass. Right now I am prepping for sprinkler installation and have looked at some of the programs available for setting up a coverage area. If you're looking for the best use for your water the hunter mp rotators are great. But they are very slow flowing. It's important to know that because you have to run the sprinkler FOREVER to get the proper amount of water onto the lawn. If you don't have more than 5 to 7 zones you'd do well with those heads. I water two to three times a week for 2 hours per station.

Great question Bobblecast. The label is extremely vague. For KBG to reach full maturity it takes about 45 days on average. Sometimes longer. You are completely right that I should have done and additional application before putting the seed down. Unfortunately when the opportunity arose to do the video there wasn't enough time, due to weather constraints, to do 2 applications. I would advise everyone in RUclips land to do at least 1 application 2 weeks prior to the overseed application.
How was it on crabgrass And nuts edge I tried to Q4 for the first Time to kill broadleaf, Nutsedge and crab grass mix it at the 3 ounces per thousand and eight and it really wasn’t that great I’m thinking 3 1/2 ounces
I’ve never been a fan of q4. Per the label it takes multiple shots due to the lower dose of the herbicide in charge of killing annual grasses. Tenacity works great when applied correctly. I will say if you’re going to apply to an entire yard you’re better off using quinclorac

Okay Ninja. I took your Tenacity Challenge on my KBG lawn... my front yard going on it’s second year, while the back was planted last October. The front yard took very, very well. Within 7 days the majority of the yard was white. It was scary and cool at the same time. It rained on the 8th day and really turned white. Most of the white cleared after mowing after 10 days. The back yard was kinda patchy here and there with hardly any white. I figured maybe the weeds in the backyard weren’t really growing much, so I watered it, fed it and got them growing again. I put down a second application yesterday and looking for better results.
My question is.... what to do with the weeds after they die? Some of the whitened weeds are turning brown so I’m thinking death. Do we dig them out, rake them off, or leave them. Maybe leave them, put some seeds on top with a bit of top soil on it. What do you recommend?
Depends in how thick your grass is. If you have thistle dig it out. If you're impatient dig them out. They dont disappear like the commercials Male it seem. Eventually the grass will crowd out the dead. But itll take a while.

Tenacity is ideal for 'problem' weeds that are not affected by more cost-effective dicamba, dimethelamine, etc. I don't think Tenacity has worked nearly as well on creeping charlie, dandelions or nutsedge for me. I use 'T' to get the Nimblewill out (my neighbor's lawn is almost all 'N' and he let's it run wild. Thanks, Mr. Neighbor)
I agree with you. it's not meant for a one stop shop. it does fantastic on nimblewill and bentgrass
Mesotrione is the main ingredient in Tenacity (40 percent). It is very expensive It averages about 7 dollars an ounce. I found the generic brand at a couple of websites with free shipping by the gallon for a about 1 dollar plus per ounce. 7 times cheaper. Just google the main ingredient and you can find it much cheaper
the generic brands can be cheaper for sure. They've been hard to come by in the past
Jared, after looking around online I'm rather sure I have a little quackgrass in a portion of my lawn. Have you found anything in your experience to either reduce or eliminate it? Kind of sounds like a foul grass. lol
fusilade ii has it listed on the label. but the issue is it's not for use with kentucky bluegrass. for that reason I haven't tested it out because 99% of the lawns in my area are dominantly kentucky bluegrass.

Penn State listed the following concerning quackgrass treatement. Post Emergence: Atrazine, Fluazifop, Pronamide, Sethoxydim, Sulfosulfuron. Have you tried any of these and found they don't work? Been pulling them out the organic screwdriver method. Thinking of trying Roundup with a cotton glove. Such an annoying problem.

tenacity can be sprayed at the same time while dropping seed. properly identifying the weed is what i recommend so you can get the right solution down to kill it. check weedalert.com
On a newly seeded lawn, what is the preferred watering schedule?
The schedule is small increments of water 3-5minutes at a time during the day. As many times during the day to keep the soil damp at all times. It’ll range between 3-5 times per day.

It would all depend on the rate that you put it down. If you put it down at the high rate I wouldn't worry about it.

According to the label Tupersan acts as a pre emergent whereas tenacity can act as both a pre emergent and post emergent. I'm located in Utah.

Tenacity is NOT safe for zoysia. I wouldn't do it.

Hey Ginja. I have just put down my second application of Tenacity. I am new to this product. I am about to reseed in a couple weeks and my question is should I try to pull out the dyeing weeds? I have about 10,000 sq ft.

I didn't have much luck with ivy and tenacity. I would look into an active ingredient called triclopyr and sulfentrazone for ivy.

Very little chance I misapplied. I used as directed...3 times with correct surfactant and dye. I'm an Engineer and can follow directions. I'm watching my neighbors application also to see if he kills his crabgrass.
Send me a picture on Facebook. If you are as meticulous as you say it may be that what you feel is crabgrass may not be crabgrass. I too am very meticulous about my applications and spray rates. So far I haven't seen tenacity fail or not kill a target weed.

Appreciate the compliments Chris. That's a great idea. I was just talking to one of my suppliers and he was shocked when I showed him a full spread sheet of all my costs per 1000ft2. Then I was shocked to learn that most people don't understand how much it costs to do business.

Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks for replying. I’ve got a lot of creeping Charlie that comes over from the neighbors property and crabgrass. I’ve been treating it the best I can and over seeding to try and suppress the weeds with the grass. I haven’t had much luck yet.
I bet. from what I've read you have to attack creeping charlie in the late fall when it's most vulnerable. I haven't had the pleasure to try it out but I've heard the rumors.

@@pestandlawnginja I just spot sprayed yesterday in NW New Jersey for both crab grass and Ground Ivey.... going on the pray and spray method hopefully it doesn't take out the whole lawn but if it does oops and oh well. It was neglected for many years before I bought the house.
@@pestandlawnginja But if you treat late fall, you will have bare patches all winter. I was going to treat in spring after it shows it's face, and then aerate, reseed and water a month later.

If your soil temps are still above 50 you can still put it down. If you put it down next spring that would be fine too.

anytime. Thistle is a booger of a weed to control. don't forget to apply your pre emergents.
The concern is if the root does get deeply hurt by herbicide, so the weed is dead permanently. It is very usual that the herbicide can only temporally hurt the weed, and so you see the leaves fade and gone. Then the weed revives in next spring. Perhaps to dig out the hibernated root before spring is the complete solution.
when people don't calibrate properly and don't get the recommended dose down it can cause leaf wilt. digging the roots out defeats the purpose of using the herbicide. you're better off just digging the weeds out in the first place.
