Just one thing you missed about Cute Charm: As genders aren't defined for individual Pokemon in this game, the Attract status works on ALL Pokemon, up to and including Pokemon who should normally be immune, such as Metagross or most Legendaries. This essentially means that Cute Charm is a better version of Pikachu's Static!
Guts doesn’t just activate on the typical status conditions (poison, burn, etc), it activates on any negative status such as a speed drop, confusion, or having a move sealed.
And Facade also gets double damage with those effects. And Pursuit's damage boost also activates on fliched Pokemon (and maybe Charmed too. There's another use for Cute Charm!)
Wait so if someone with guts uses close combat that lowers defenses, does Guts double the power? Also never played a PMD game so I don't know anything about it.
Nick Light In PMD the speed stat doesn’t affect the order of moves, but how much damage you take from speed based attacks. Changes to speed in a dungeon can affect how many moves you can make but last only so long, so it’s treated as a status. So no, other stat drops won’t buff guts. Sorry for the long explanation.
@@karmadarkyt3169 So, to summarize: Your speed being lowered (slowed, everyone has two moves after yours) or increased (quick, you get up to 4 moves before your opponent) both count as status effects, but any other stat being changed (a.k.a. buffed and debuffed) don't.
Worth noting: in RTDX Speed and Movement Speed are 2 different things. Speed is a base stat that affects (I believe) the chance to attack twice in one turn. Cannot be changed in battle. Movement speed is the number of tiles you can walk before your turn ends. Doing anything except moving or waiting (attacking, using an item etc) ends your turn regardless of Movement Speed. Starts off as 1 for all Pokemon, but can be changed temporarily mid-battle with moves. They did this because Speed-boosting moves used to let you attack more than once in the same turn, which was COMPLETELY busted. Imagine Articuno using Agility four times on the first turn, and then Powder Snow (which hits the whole room) 3-4 times per turn for the next several turns. Then realise that THIS WAS A MANDATORY STORY BOSS. When all you have at this point is two starter Pokemon, BOTH OF WHICH CAN BE WEAK TO ICE. Yeah, the change was needed.
Like your idea I was using char and bone lightning rod means no electricity weakness and charizard being fly means no ground damage bringing magnetite covers water weakness and bonemerang murders everyone from far away with steamroll
Pickup isn't that bad and you can get nice things from it. Pay day is also kinda cute. If you like collecting stuff, Meowth is excellent so I guess that's a flavour win? It's coverage is also not that bad and I'm not sure on the stats, but they work fairly differently to the main game. For instance speed is not Slowpoke's worst stat in mystery dungeon, special defense is. Not sure if bug or whatever that someone put the numbers for SpeD and Speed backwards but meh. As for Bulbasaur, during the main story, yeah it's not so good but at least it does have Sleep Powder which as said is good in boss battles. Growth which comes a bit later can be quite nice too. Chikorita is not so fortunate. Venusaur (and Meganium) do get access to Petal blizzard which is amazing, so good things come to those who wait?
Also Meowth gets Fury Swipes, combine it with that rare quality that makes multi-hit moves not miss really strong. Also Foul Play hits even at beginning over twice harder than anyother move it has.
@@MasterZhaituki My meowth has the rare ability that makes it easier to recruit so unless there's a way to switch rare qualities, I can't get that bonus
It's not the best, but Bulbasaur is a solid Pokemon you get sleep powder and stun spore. I hear it also learns petal blizzard at like level 50 which hits everything in the room like blizzard so that is actually a really good move that few Pokemon get. Razor leaf is your ranged attack so i think you'll be fine.
Here is a little something about Bonemerang, it PIERCES... getting some Accuracy Drinks and Power Drinks on it makes it to where you can wipe out like troves of pokemon~ It's super great... I got Cubone as my Quiz choice and at first I thought it was a Jab at me the game calling me 'Lonely' But it turns out being super lonely worked out in my Advantage... Mystery Dungeon showing you that no matter if you are alone you can always be the best when you got friends to back you up!
I use skitty because the move pool is amazing. Skitty does have the downside of having very weak stats but if you take the time to get lots of power boosting drinks from quest rewards, skitty is absolutely busted. My moves are Double Slap, Blizzard, Thunderbolt, and Shadowball. Double slap kills everything and does around 50 damage per hit. I have the accuracy pretty much maxed so it always hits which makes it completely broken. Blizzard kills everything in an entire room, good for monster houses. Then I have Shadowball for range and coverage and Thunderbolt for coverage and it hits all pokemon around you which is also good for monster houses. Ps. Skitty is currently level 25
@@rjante2236 Skitty doesn't get Normalize as a starter- it'll only ever have the VASTLY superior Cute Charm (Which, alongside Attract, is far better in this game due to Genders not being defined).
The crazy thing about lightning rod is that for dungeons like Mt Thunder in the main game and Thunder Field in the postgame, enemies will constantly waste their turns if you have a water type partner because they'll keep on trying to exploit that partner's weakness only for their moves to be redirected to you every single time.
Pallet University I started with Psyduck, and between Cloud Nine and early Ice Beam and Psychic TMs, I would have to put him further up the list (probably right around where you have Torchic, as Ice Beam is absolutely ridiculous for the majority of the story). I ended up taking Cubone as my partner, and yeah...stomped all the way through it.
@@Zaltaxian I also started with Psyduck and Cubone. I want to play other Pokémon but I have a hard time getting rid of Psyduck with his handy Cloud nine and mine has the thing that makes multi-hit moves never miss... which means my Marowak always hit with Bonemerang!!
Cubone is probably my favorite, so I'm glad hes kicking ass in this game. He's definitely who I picked in the original, and my partner was Chikorita in my first playthrough. And that pair holds a special place in my heart now lol, seeing the partners personality on Chikorita made me really like that Pokemon overall.
As a Skitty player myself, it makes me smile to see that Skitty is considered one of the best in PMD DX! Now, I like playing as a Skitty even in the Explorers games. Sure, it can be a pain in the butt to have Normalize, but I still have Cute Charm so that can help and it allows me to still hit any Pokemon! I just get very nerfed when fighting Pokemon that resist normal type moves. But in Rescue Team DX... I got super lucky, getting the TMs for Thunderbolt and Ice Beam pretty early, and I kept those moves for the whole game. And when I got Doubleslap, I can really start dealing damage! Ice Beam is a good move to hit from far away, Thunderbolt can hit any enemies around me and Doubleslap works great on bosses! Cubone is my partner and Brutal Swing is just as you describe, I never removed it from her moveset. Bonemarang is a great move as well. Skitty and Cubone make a very solid duo to play through the main game with! I'm thinking of being an Eevee next time, but I'm not sure who to make as my partner if I do. But I will always be a Skitty girl at heart... even when Normalize gets in my way, I won't let it stop me! Edit: Also, I'm sure you know this now, but it's not tricky to evolve Eevee here! Any Pokemon that need an item or whatever else they would need just needs to get some Evolution Crystals! You can get two pretty easily when you beat the game, you just have to get through Waterfall Pond, which is only 19 floors. And since you are allowed to pick, it's not a problem at all really!
That's not something new to Rescue Team DX, either; Skitty was also considered game-breakingly powerful in the original Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team as well, for one simple reason: Genders aren't defined for Pokemon. This is important because it means nobody is immune to being hit by Attract or other effects that cause infatuation (Like Cute Charm), not even normally genderless Pokemon like Magnezone, Metagross or most legendaries. And Skitty gets both Cute Charm and natural access to Attract. Needless to say, it meant Skitty was VERY good at locking down targets. It's not as effective in DX due to bosses being able to remove statuses from themselves after a turn or two, but it's still great.
Your skitty set was kinda bad Linked tackle tail whip double slap and then attract is the best skitty set in both the originals in DX because the youtuber was wrong Eevee is the only normal type not dominating the 3 best starters in the game
@@V2ULTRAKill I personally never really liked linking moves so that's why I never did. I never said my move list is perfect or anything it's just what I prefer is all.
3 years late, but I just picked up mystery dungeon on switch yesterday. Never played a mystery dungeon game before, idk why! Found this really helpful even though I’ve already started the game. I got bulbasaur based on the quiz and picked cubone as my partner. We’ll see how it goes, but this was good information.
I picked Eevee for me and Cindaquil as my partner. Well let me tell you that at the right moment i learned Refresh it became super easy lmao that thing heals EVERYTHING 😂 I also think the IA greatly improved in this remake cause when i do take Cindaquil as lead and end up being confused, Eevee heals me right away, it's very VERY useful
Finally someone recognises the all-powerful combo! Eevee gets STAB+Adaptability Tackle for consistent damage output, Helping Hand to boost Chikorita, Heal Bell/Refresh for status healing, and Quick Attack/Hyper Voice/Bite for contingency depending on the Dungeon. The perfect support. Chikorita gets STAB+Overgrow Giga Drain, Energy Ball for range, AncientPower for all of Grass’s resisting types, and Natural Gift for an adaptable physical move. Just boost up Chikorita and let it tank all the damage and heal it back, obliterate enemies with supereffective moves regardless of type, and pitch in with a Tackle/Hyper Voice/Heal Bell when the situation calls for it. Instant win.
I'm almost tempted to say that, whichever Pokemon I get (I'll do the quiz most likely), I'll pick a Pokemon that has the same colour rescue team scarf. Fittingly enough, my original pair, Psyduck and Charmander, both wear blue scarves, so that's perfect. XD
@Lloyd Johannessen torchic and chikorita here.. but i picked them because they are two of my most favorite starters i like some of the others too like machop and eevee (i had a squirtle and a bulbasaur on my first playtrough wich i did not finish back in the day.. i reset my game and restarted that time being an eevee and picking chikorita as my second) this time it actually gave me treecko for the question thing but i was like BUT I WANT TORCHIC CUZ THE CHICKEN IS ADORBSSS so i went torchic and just had to go for chikorita as my first finish of the game was with a Chikorita as my partner and i ADORED her for her razor leaf amazingness
To save time for anybody who's watching recently, Skitty, Cubone, and Psyduck are pretty much some of the best starters. Cubone is broken early game with its starting moves, and even more broken later with bonemerang. The moves it starts with are pretty much the moves you'll use for the rest of the game, with the exception of bone club for bonemerang and headbutt for the rock slide TM or something else. That's how good Cubone's starting moves are. Skitty has good versatility with it being able to learn thunderbolt/thunder, ice beam/blizzard, and shadow ball TM's. It also learns double-slap which is absolutely broken with the rapid bull eyes rare quality. If you're not able to get any of these TM's early on, you still have moves like charge beam, attract, and sing. I didn't find the shadow ball TM for a long time, so I ended up linking sing with double slap, allowing me to put enemies asleep then easily K.O. them if they get too close. Anyways, I never actually used Psyduck, but with cubone's electric rod ability, you can absorb electric moves for your partner Psyduck, although Cubone is a better physical attacker than special, so you don't have much of a use with the boosted special attack. Psyduck has a good ability as well, (i think) and also can learns lots of TM's similar to skitty. A bunch of other starters are good too, but the ones I listed are known to be some of the best starters ingame. Charmander and Treecko/Mudkip are a great duo, because they have huge movepools and versatility, and also ontop of that they have solid mega's when fully evolved, so use them too if you want. Also just because I didn't list a starter, doesn't mean it's not good. Eevee, Torchic, and Machop are really good pokémon as well. Try them before deciding they aren't good. That's really all the tips I have for starters though, but on the other hand I can tell you about good early game pokémon. The Magnetmite you get for free is great, it's really defensive, already knows a lot of good moves, and can learn a lot more. Definitely a good pokémon for early game and slightly late game. Exeggcutor is great, and is as easy to obtain as the free Magnetmite you get. It can know confusion and seed bomb, which are super good moves if you link them together. Exeggcutor also knows barrage, which is a ranged double-slap, making it really overpowered with the rapid bull eyes rare quality too. Make sure to check Gulpin's move reminder if exeggcutor doesn't know these moves. Those are all the early game pokémon that I know good, and for late game I unfortunately don't know many good pokémon for it. I have heard Altaria is broken, but i've never used it so I'm not sure. You can probably find your own late game pokémon if you're starters aren't good enough for late game somehow. That's all the tips I can share, so I hope it helped.
Depends on what we are talking about, if we are talking in terms of the overall game its hard to say as PMD has many types of pokemon within dungeons unless said dungeon has a specific theme. So you are bound to come across your type weakness at some point especially when monster houses are involved. If we are talking strictly boss encounters, I would have to go with Cubone given the fact most of the bosses especially early game are part flying. So Cubone learning Rock Moves via TMs really helps you out there, also with its Ground Typing the likes of Zapdos, Moltres etc aren't going to be to much of a problem, bosses further on you have the luxury of being higher level so you have more assets to give you a better advantage. So I would say if we are talking about bosses only Cubone is the way to go especially if it has lightning Rod, due to its Ground typing it has little weaknesses giving it a good type matchup against a lot of threats the game throws at you. For the partner I would probably choose a Grass Type, Treecko being my preferred choice. As it covers all of Cubones weaknesses including ice as Treecko knows a Steel type move Iron Tail by default in the remake, it also covers the weakness to water and its a neutral matchup to fellow Grass Types, by giving Treecko a flying Type move such as Aerial Ace which it can learn via TM.
Treecko is probably the best grass type option imo, but someone pointed out to me that Chikorita gets screens which are pretty good in these games I guess. I've never really used them
Dang it I’ve never been good at mystery dungeons but I was gonna choose Treecko but I need an advantage idk it think I’m still gonna get Treecko tho Treecko squad
LummieWolf Gameing I’m using treecko with pikachu and I’m doin Fine, the legendary birds did cause problems but pikachu slaughtered them with electro ball and iron tail linked while I stood back and sniped with Dragon breath and Quick attack
Actually I personally think grass types are really good in this game so I think the "grass types are bad" is a myth or personal bias at least in the case of mystery dungeon. I mean sure they are weak to all the legendary birds, but you can easily bypass this with a move like sing or sleep powder and most grass types can learn a rock type move which obliterates Moltres and Articuno while Zapdos can be ganked with a massive army of 8 team mates
So I got Eevee and picked Psyduck as a partner (cuz that’s what a friend of mine got) and I later picked up an Oddish as a third member. They are. Absolutely. Ridiculous. I taught Psyduck Blizzard and Ice Beam via TM, Oddish learnt Sweet Scent, Stun Spore and Moonlight (the first two I linked) and Eevee had Helping Hand and Refresh. I‘m sure you can imagine the result: Weather? Don‘t care, got cloud nine. Use sweet scent-stun spore once and have a guaranteed paralysis and chance for blizzard to hit, and buff the shit out of my team with helping hand. Also, no need for recovery items, as I can heal status ailments with refresh and health with moonlight. My immediate post story lv 30 team swept lv 50 moltres without taking a single hit.
@9600GTMAN I used my psyduck as a ranged combatant, and to give it variety for sniping mons from behind in thin corridors I gave it a ranged ice and water move (which I didn't mention since it didn't play into my boss beating strat), since psychic didn't really lend itself well for that from what I could tell. And I also wanted a move hitting every mon in the room for monster rooms, which Blizzard was really good for. Also, ice is really strong against many of this games bosses.
This is a really solid strat for tackling the game, I wish I had the smarts to come up with such an elaborate setup while I was playing through the main story.
Seeker I mean, it works like a charm, but it mostly only fell into place for me through luck. After all, Blizzard I just bought for Psyduck cuz I really wanted a room covering attack and Stun Spore was the first paralysis attack I had access to which I felt would be useful on my team, the other moves were all learnt by level up and filled the gaps really nicely.
Pikachu and Meowth have been going great for me so far, and I’m on my second run! My first run was Eevee and Cyndaquil, and I never once failed a dungeon!
Cubone's Bonemarang is crazy when combined with the rare qualities steamroll and rapid bulls eye. It makes both shots always hit twice, pierces anything in the 10 tile range, makes nothing immune/resistant to it ontop of being STAB.
You clearly know your stuff because I didn't understand about 75% of it! However what I did convinced me to roll a Cubone/Squirtle team to see if it works.
My duo is Totodile and Charmander. The Totodile is named after me and the Charmander after my BF. They’re our favourite starters. Glad both are solid picks too. Especially because Totodile is the best Pokémon in existence. :3
I was told I was lonely in the demo and I got cubone and going through the dungeon with brutal swing I was like holy shit. By far best starter. During the demo I ended up trying out all of the starters and cubone was by far number 1.
If Pickup works in DX like in the original games, the item you can receive is pulled from the item spawn pool of that floor of the dungeon. Psyduck was SO GOOD in vanilla Rescue Team! It was late-post game POWERHOUSE! Cloud Nine and Damp were super good abilities to have! Again, if it works in DX like in the originals, stats are not only more rounded, but tend to be lower overall. Like, 70 or so in a stat is considered high.
My first play through of Red/Blue I was Treecko. It was a very difficult introduction to mystery dungeon as a grass starter, but it’s what made me love the game. I’ll be using Treecko again this time and I’m so pumped
I run a Bulbasaur with Torchic (because thats what i got when i played red rescue when i was a kid), but it's useful because Bulba can't be poisoned so I can just walk over poison traps and eat grimy food all day, and I just spam sunny day so I can spam solar beam, power up torchics fire moves and become immune to weather. And then sleep poweder if anything too strong gets too close. Basically a walking artillery cannon with lots of utility.
Bonemerang is such a good move. It go’s through enemies and hits twice. Max its accuracy, increase its pp and atk, line them up in a corridor and watch them fall
I respect your opinion on grass starters. However, Chikorita’s access to screens made my personal playthrough so much easier than expected. I had played the original games growing up and knew how much of a challenge the grass type had considering the bosses. Admittedly ancientpower boosted Chikorita’s viability considerably. However, I never felt like she underwent any kind of trouble. That may be due to the innate defenses she carries, but she definitely had a supportive presence that should not be underestimated. Also (late game) light screen caused Kyogre’s water spout to cause a measly 1 HP on damage! That kind of protection shouldn’t go unnoticed just because the grass type face considerable opposition throughout the game. The other two grass options receive mega evolution but Chikorita’s offers impressive support and an eventual all opponents damage dealing move in Petal Blizzard (as does Bulbasaur). Those moves are incredible for clearing monster houses, especially when combined with the steamroller ability. :)
I went with Eevee (player) and Pikachu (partner), simply because they're my favorites, given the choices. The real challenge of who to evolve Eevee into. The problem is, I love all the Eeveelutions! In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, I went with Fennekin and Pikachu.
One thing to note about Meowth is that it gets fury swipes as well as payday. So if you link them you guarantee get money as you’re pretty much killing anything. It’s high speed lets it get double attacks off quite often. Definitely the money making starter
Started Charmander with Totodile partner and blew through the story without wiping once with no link moves. Giving apples to those in need made all the difference. Currently lvl 40 Charizard and Feraligatr. I'm almost diamond rank, but only have Articuno since i'm trying to farm money so I can get all the camps so I stop losing shinnies. I got the befriend rare quality from the first gummy I ate, but I lost 5 shinnies so far due to not having their camps.
The thing left out on Bonemerang is that it pierces which means it hits more than just one pokemon in the line. So in monster houses, back up one step and throw repeatedly and watch everything fall over. It is utterly ridiculous and one of the few physical attacks that hits at range without blowing up your team (like Earthquake). Hydro pump pierces too which yeah, makes any water choice + Cubone, very strong. Care if you pick Mudkip though and want Hydro pump, Swampert does not learn Hydro pump but Mudkip does at 41. Muddy water hits everyone (allies and friends) sooo not ideal. Feraligatr gets pump very late too, Totodile at 50 for instance and Gatr doesn't get it until the 70s. Squirtle gets it at level 40. Meganium and Venusaur do both get Petal blizzard (Meganium via Gulpin and Venusaur at 50) though which is really strong (hits all enemies but not friends in the room) and with steamroll on something, the typing of things doesn't matter so post game, those two are quite solid picks if you have the patience for them. Choose Machop and Cubone just because I wanted to be 'no grass/water/fire starters'. Cus I'm a rebel. Or something?
I can't believe how broken that is especially when they removed bullet seeds ability to hit multiple targets in a row. Why did they remove bullet seeds multi target ability only to give a more broken move the ability to hit multiple targets? Oh well the more you know.
An alternative for Monster Houses is to throw Room-hitting moves at it. It's why the Fire-Type Starters (sans Charmander, who already got the move) are much better in this game than the original: They can be tutored Heat Wave. Glaceon's also pretty great thanks to natural access to Blizzard.
@@skywing217 Bullet seed is still really good though, especially on single targets. There's not many moves that hit multiple times at range and even the ones that are only point blank are still pretty damn good. Plus with Rapid bull'seyes the quality where multi hit moves don't miss? Yeah, Bullet seed is still among the best moves in the game IMO.
Bubby eventually gets growth though, which is nice cuz it buffs both Sp. Atk and Atk so no matter what move you're using it'll be buffed. And he can use that along with Sludge/Sludge Bomb on those Bosses. And you can teach Energy Ball which has a range of 4. Still gonna be weak to quite a few of those bosses though, unfortunately, but I'm three bosses in and so far I've had no trouble.
I got Charmander and a Eevee as a partner! I think that combo does really well in the game especially when Eevee knows refresh so I can use it to heal status problems that effect everyone in my team. Charmander knows flame charge great for range and dragon rage which is really useful.
I went for machop, because i really like him and i thought i could play on *hard mode* throughout the campaign, since most campaign bosses are flying type. It ended still being easy because i got rock slide early and made him really bulky. I kept bullet punch because i wanted atleast one move that can hit 2 tiles away. Then got dual chop and dynamic punch as the last 2. Dual chop is absolute broken. Oneshot everything and makes rayquaza feel like fodder and dynamic punch is great fightning move because it can cause confusion. Sure the accuracy is bad, but i buffed the move to 100% accuracy. Guts also works with every negative status in the game. still not the best but it's something.
I’m a pikachu with a cyndaquil partner, just started the post game, I’ve never been all that great at mystery dungeon so I’m still struggling with kyogre, my current move set is pikachu has electro ball, charge beam, discharge, and iron tail while cyndaquil has ember, flamethrower, double kick, and lava plume
B de Groot actually already got past stormy sea now, and yeah I remember relying heavily on smokescreen back in darkness, I think now though it only slightly reduces accuracy like the main games unfortunately
I picked mudkip as my starter and torchic as my partner but ended up using torchic more as its move coverage was better for the overall game and helped me through many dungeons
I got Chikorita in the personality quiz which I didn’t mind since it’s my favorite grass type starter and choose Mudkip as my partner because I never used Mudkip before and honestly it was very fun because I could spam Energy Ball and Mudkip would use Ice beam and it would basically one shot everything also with bosses It got difficult sometimes but Chikoritas Ancient Power really helped it out alongside Synthesis
i kinda thought Mudkip/Cubone and Charmander are a good combo when they evolve Marowak has lighting rod or Swampter for electric moves and rock resistance for Charizard and Charizard for there grass weakness and Swampters 1 and main weakness. *for Earthquake and Heat Wave combo*
I got Bulbasaur on the quiz, and I had to go for it because I got Bulbasaur on the quiz back when I first played Blue Rescue team years ago! Because of that I even knew the boss hell I’d be dealing with, but I figured if I’d managed back then that I could do it again. And it was just to wholesome not to be back at it with my old duo.
Quiz gave me a Machop, so I used what they gave me despite being able to choose, and I had never used Machop in these games before. I thought I would have a hard time against all the bosses, but thankfully that hasn't been the case because I hoard Revivers and early on got access to both Low Sweep and Rock Tomb. They're low accuracy, but I fixed that with lots of Accuracy Drinks, and every time they hit they lower the opponent's Movement Speed. If they happen to survive the attack, they usually go down in the very next turn before they can even hit you. I've also got Bulk Up + Cross Chop linked and a Scope Lens. Machamp is decent, sure there are better Fighting types like Breloom with Spore or Blaziken with Mirror Move and Heat Wave, or Heracross or Medicham, but for what I've been able to do with him so far, he's not that bad at all. But I imagine the average player would definitely have trouble using Machop.
I got mudkip and cyndaquil. Overall I would say my experience through the game and post game was pretty easy with the exception of groudon and kyogre since typhlosion is super weak aginst them.
Three words... All Protect Orb. Have a full team of eight when you enter a boss battle and two or three All Protect Orbs, and boom, easy mode. I guess it is kinda cheap, though...
I went with Mudkip+Bulbasaur because that's what I often did in the original, my answers always give me Mudkip on the test. The early game was pretty rough, got bodied in Sinister Woods quite a bit, but once Mudkip learned Rock Throw it got better, since combining that with sleep powder spam made for an easy fight against the birds.
Fake Out has a fairly high chance to flinch ontop of being a ranged move and Pay Day is great for building up your money stocks. Plus, mulit-hit moves are pretty strong in this game, so Fury Swipes gets really Powerful really fast
Chikorita is fun you can pair 2 4 range ranged moves together or use it for dual screens. And postgame it gets a room clear move that only hits enemies if your willing to evolve it
I am so jealous about how good Cubone is in DX. In the original game, my moveset at Lv 30+ is Tail Whip, Headbutt, Bone Club and Growl. The move that most recently tried to learn was Leer. _Leer._ Needless to say, this playthrough is being especially painful. Oh right and Vulpix with Imprison in PMD2 is OP.
Bulbasaur gets sleep powder fairly early which automatically makes it great, on-top of that it also gets razor leaf early on and synthesis, bulb is really good, untouchable by most bosses.
Thanks for the video! I’ve played as all the starters in the original game except for the male exclusives. Grass types are indeed tricky to use in the game but I usually don’t have much trouble since I’ve played the games so much. I usually get Pikachu, Charmander, Chikorita, and Bulbasuar as my picks from the test. I chose Eevee and Treecko as my partner. I’m now a Vaporeon with Refresh, Hydro Pump, Blizzard, and Scald. Eevee gets Refresh which heals all team members bad statuses which is one of the parts of playing as an Eevee!
13:29 i haven’t played the original in so long but if I’m. It mistaken this is the music from the very last main story dungeon with rayquaza no? It was such a good song
I started the game with Psyduck. Cloud Nine has been pretty great for ignoring Harsh Sunlight and Hail/Sandstorm conditions (while also negating a Water buff with Rain, unfortunately), and it learns pretty decent multi-tile water moves early on; Water Gun and Water Pulse. Later on it also learns Hydro Pump and can learn Blizzard by TM; the former moves for 10 tiles, the latter does a room. If you're able to get the TM for Calm Mind, it can also buff itself, and can learn Psychic by TM for a little coverage. My partner is a Pikachu. Unfortunately it doesn't get much actual use until it learns Agility or Discharge, but Electro Ball is sure to deal a decent amount of damage to most pokes until then. It'll primarily learn 1/2 tile moves until its mid-30s, but once it does learn Discharge, it's a beast. You can even teach it Nasty Plot for a nice SpAtk buff, and Agility ensures more turns against a boss before it can fight back. The two together with Discharge and Blizzard are room and Monster House clearers. I'm glad I went with them both.
Psyduck + Cubone is the best combo throughout the entire game hands down. It’s good literally as soon as you get it, and the only thing you need to get to make it impossible to beat is Ice Beam TM for Psyduck, which due to the changes to Keckleon shop is really easy to get. You can make an argument for Skitty instead of Psyduck but Skitty doesn’t ignore weather and it’s Fighting weakness doesn’t get covered so.
After +100hours id say the starter doesnt matter, you just need to get an altaria (swablu) asap and thats by far the most convenient way to beat/ play the game
Gave my cubone Blizzard TM pretty early on (Kekleon shop), upped power accuracy and PP with the drinks, upped SpAtt. If it's in the same room as me, it dies in a maximum of 2-3 hits (not including bosses obviously), even across the other side of a room. It's honestly a thing of beauty.
I'd argue Glaceon does that better with access to STAB Blizzard. Room-hitting moves that DON'T hit your allies (like Heat Wave, Discharge and Blizzard) are always great. Combined with, say, Heat Wave from Charizard, it can make for a very nasty 1-2 room-hitting punch. Glaceon may be one of the worst Eeveelutions in the main series, but I'd argue its access to Blizzard makes it one of the best in the Mystery Dungeon series.
my 'best' team is me as Cyndaquil and my partner as Mudkip. just spam smokescreen on the boss and its an instant win. moves not really useful in the main series can be really good in mystery dungeon. link tail whip and a physical move and you just keep doing more and more damage each turn
I saw this video on my reccomendations literally after beating Rayquaza, and I have picked Cubone + Squirtle. All of my friends were telling me the game was harder than the original, and I was storming through the game. Glad to see I have such a good eye :P
I don’t get anyone claiming it’s harder than the original. Bear in mind I played through both with bulbasaur+ torchic and this is by far easier. That’s not to say there aren’t features that add to difficulty but far more make the games easier.
I got psyduck and chose eevee as a partner. Didn’t expect it to be strong, but after putting ice beam on psyduck, feels a tad broken. Plus not having to worry about weather is pretty solid
When I played Mystery Dungeon Blue way back in the day, I had Totodile and Chicorita, and she suffered hard. All of those Flying type SAB moves kept taking her down most boss fights, so to prevent that I would constantly have to get up close and personal to keep the aggro away for her. don't get me wrong, I loved her as my partner, but it really forced me to bring in a heck of a lot more of those revive seeds then I wanted too.
I have Meowth (or, as you wrote it, Mewoth) as my partner, so here’s a quick addendum: Pickup works regardless of whether or not Meowth is holding an item or an equipment. If your bag is full, the item will be placed on the ground. It does not work on every floor.
I chose pikachu + totildile and it worked for me so far, having electro ball, and slow wand I can easily take on the boss without having to use a lot of revival, not only we are able to hit more in a turn but also pikachu unique ability squad up helps recruit so many pokemon when we get to the boss floor.
Skitty was still good in the original games because it could have normalize, but it could also have cute charm. With cute charm, it can make your opponent infatuated and unable to do anything, plus it can have sing, and sleep is good. For it's attacks a ranged move like quick attack or shadow ball (which was physical in the originals), and it gets double slap. It hits 2-5 times and it is stab which translates to a lot of damage. I decimated a lot of my enemies when I did a skitty playthrough.
I often use Eevee and Pikachu; I even did as a kid long before it became a main of the 5 gen 1 starters. The reason being is due to the immunities Eevee has and Pikachu's starting moves is very versatile. You can get the others easily via give apple fainted Pokémon in like sky tower. There's where I got Squirtle
Good move pool I do recommend changing thunder for thunderbolt since it’ll hit a lot more often. Unless you got rain dance to make sure thunder always hits.
@@destroyerx2513 Have a poke that knows it~ I think any of the starters can be good if you add a good move pool. I an not sire if to keep him as a Meowth later or evolve him.
Oh dang, Bulbasaur was what I got on the personality test and I stuck with him for the entire game. I also chose Torchic as my partner. Been doing mostly fine throughout the game, though, surprisingly.
I was a Chikorita, but I opted for Eevee and a partner Torchic. We did pretty well throughout the game with enough prep. But glad to know my OG team of Charmander and Treeko are a good choice for a team too~ I also mainly wanted Eevee so I could be a Sylveon in post game. Super fun so far.
I've pretty much always gone with Chikorita, and I actually picked Meowth as my partner. I know this vid says that this really isn't great, but I've been seeing relative success with them. I ditched Razor Leaf for Energy Ball early on and dedicated my moveset to special attack, where the Meowth ended up as my physical attacker. Fake Out has been useful, Pickup I find has been useful, and heck Ancient Power gives very valuable Rock-Type coverage to a Grass-type. Most of the bosses mentioned here that resist Grass-type moves are weak to Rock, and you can rack up so much damage if you get all of those stat boosts, including an additional attack in the same turn you get the speed boost. One other asset that's been invaluable has been the rare quality Steamroll, which makes type matchups null and void for the attacking side. I've also been using the Magnemite you recruit early on, who's since evolved into Magnezone and learned Discharge, which combined with Steamroll has been incredibly valuable.
I always get mudkip for my pokemon with the quiz so it's the one I go with. Sometimes I'll get squirtle as well but I can picture myself as a mudkip more. I chose torchic to be my partner. I like the two together. Theyve always been among my favorite starters
I got Mudkip as the starter from the quiz and I went with Cubone as the starter. I felt like Cubone was a more uncommon pokemon that gets used in the main games so I went with him. Plus they are both Ground types evolved and it made me feel like those two could co-exist in a team together.
Bulbasaur has always been my favorite, and honestly he can be quite useful. 1. Sleep powder is very good (Even though in DX you have seeds and wands, it's still great to be able to save the bag space and have SP linked to an attack for boss fights.) 2. Not really a boon to Bulbasaur or Grass types in general specifically, but the Steamroll rare quality basically makes type resistance/immunity a nonissue. I was lucky enough to have it be my first RQ, so it's made the whole game basically a cake walk. 3. To my knowledge both Chikorita and Bulbasaur can use screens, which can be useful. It really seems like they are meant to be played as supports which suits me fine, I like being tricky and applying status. 4. Bulbasaur's also the only dual type right from the start, having access to sludge and sludge bomb to provide 2 different STAB types and a good alternate damage moves to those that resist grass. And, if we're being honest, proper preparation, grinding and item use basically circumvent most of the challenges the game throws at you, so it really is more of a matter of personal preference because every Starter/Partner combo can work 99% of the time. The game really is only as hard as you want it to be. Either way, I like the video. (Bulbasaurs Rise Up)
Im a mudkip with a Charmander as my partner! Blizzard/Heat Wave combo is very op. My third member is Kangaskhan with Comet Punch ( a multihit move ) and the more I max out the power/accuracy of it the more op it gets. A single hit is doing 100 damage roughly
My personality test got me Pikachu, and I chose Squirtle as a partner bc I wanted a water type to cover my ground weakness. Overall, I enjoyed my playthrough, although I will say that Pikachu can be a very easy time through the game since the Kecleon Shop always seems to sell thunderbolt... so you can get one of the best electric moves by the time you make it to Mt. Steel with zero grinding. Grass knot from the beginning is a pretty good move to take down any Pokémon resistant to electric moves (and when paired with one of the highest special attack stats out of all the starters, it will last you well through post game). Also, it seems that all the main story bosses are flying type too haha.
gen 7 did buff Normalize so that it actually gives a 1.3X boost to any non-Normal type move it learns. Unfortunately, the final dungeon of this game is mostly Ghost types so Psyduck would be some pretty great backup regardless of the ability because it covers your fighting weakness with its Psychic coverage
Lol went with Squirtle/Cubone already due to wanting a gunner and barbarian archetype in my team. Brutal Swing is amazing btw and bonemerang is absolutely OP. The downside was the early fight against Zapdos where instead of using any Electric attacks it decided to use Sky Attack... don't go into that fight without items or freshly recruited Pokemon you're particularly attached to.
Lol I guess the game devs got a bit lazy cuz in explorers genders were defined.
@@vossboss220 I'd argue it's less that and more to be faithful to the original RRT/BRT, which similarly did not have genders defined.
@@Hyperneosonic97 that's fair... although considering they updated most other mechanics to fall in line with gen 8 it's still odd don't you think?
OR, you could teach your starter attract, and then link all your moves. That’s how I beat the original using machop. That, and blast seed spam.
@@vossboss220 except they stopped defining genders in super as well and since it uses the super engine.....
The best duo would have to be Charizard and Swampert, they cover each others weaknesses perfectly.
Blizzard and Heatwave dominate the whole game then as 3rd Altaria with:
Dragon dance
Fury attack
Outrage
Sing
All linked together destroys any boss.
Picked them in Explores of Time. It is the best.
Like your idea I was using char and bone lightning rod means no electricity weakness and charizard being fly means no ground damage bringing magnetite covers water weakness and bonemerang murders everyone from far away with steamroll
@@arrivals1 Now that sounds really broken. Does Rollout keep hitting until the boss is dead?
Arrivals1 Whats RBE?
So basically my meowth + bulbasaur team could not be worse? Got it: Hard mode activated
@@EpicDuco If you manage to roll a new rare quality from a gummi, you can either keep the old or new one. You can roll more than one.
Doesn't Normalize make its coverage suck?
@@rjante2236 Skitty doesn't get Normalize as a starter- it'll only ever have the VASTLY superior Cute Charm (Which, alongside Attract, is far better in this game due to Genders not being defined).
@@Hyperneosonic97 Oh, thank god. Normalize is such a terrible ability.
I'm on the hunt for Shadow Ball myself... that's the main thing I feel is missing for my moveset. But you're right with Doubleslap being broken!
@@peachymiku6432 There's a wondermail code for it.
Psyduck is great for nullifying weather effects that deal damage! Its really handy
Definitely! Very useful for the late game dungeons
Ayyy psyduck-cubone gang :)
OverlordOcelot I’m a Psyduck with a Torchic as my Partner and we don’t know what “losing” is lol we have never fainted in a dungeon
Gameorama91 omg I started as a Cubone with my partner as Chikorita, isn’t it a fun duo?
Peachy Miku my team is the same but cubone is leader and skiity is partner I agree tho
Your skitty set was kinda bad
Linked tackle tail whip double slap and then attract is the best skitty set in both the originals in DX because the youtuber was wrong
Eevee is the only normal type not dominating the 3 best starters in the game
@@V2ULTRAKill I personally never really liked linking moves so that's why I never did. I never said my move list is perfect or anything it's just what I prefer is all.
@@peachymiku6432 fair, but move linking is disgustingly strong
Panacée I picked the same team set!
Eevee and Chikorita are the only partner combo that is allowed in my heart.
Idc if I'm a lonely meowth or brave machop!!
I approve eevee. Chika is a you though. I prefer being a machop uwu
Cubone is the Lonely one!
Thank you RUclips, underrated youtubers like you are some of my favourite to watch, especially on Pokémon mystery dungeon
I got Psyduck as starter and got Cubone as partner. Didn't even know Cubone had Lightningrod. Love the comp!
“Grass starters are trash” *me watching this after beating the game without a single wipe in 18 hrs as a Treeko*
Lol
Tbh choosing the Pokémon that harder to play with is more interesting
As it covers all of Cubones weaknesses including ice as Treecko knows a Steel type move Iron Tail by default in the remake, it also covers the weakness to water and its a neutral matchup to fellow Grass Types, by giving Treecko a flying Type move such as Aerial Ace which it can learn via TM.
grass type equals hard mode you convinced me im being a treecko XD
Dark Scream Huh ok I’m not a fan of pikachu but I’m ready for a challenge thank you
Actually I personally think grass types are really good in this game so I think the "grass types are bad" is a myth or personal bias at least in the case of mystery dungeon.
I‘m sure you can imagine the result:
Weather?
I love it when you randomly come across entertaining poketubers talking about games you love :)
The stats thing seemed to have been updated a bit more to reflect actual stats in the main games.
But machop doe :P
I went with Eevee (player) and Pikachu (partner), simply because they're my favorites, given the choices. The real challenge of who to evolve Eevee into. The problem is, I love all the Eeveelutions! In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, I went with Fennekin and Pikachu.
But why evolve eevee when you can keep the scarf?
@@wolftamerwolfcorp7465 That is one thing, yes. A reason to not evolve the Pokemon you chose to play as and your partner.
Peachrocks5 My first playthrough, too. And you beat me to the Bonemerang bit, which is especially good if you use some accuracy drinks on it.
I went with Totodile and Cubone partner. Loved it.
Meowth's fury swipes with the no miss rare quality for multi-hit moves is kinda nuts tho
In the old game smokescreen was extremely overpowered because boss Pokémon couldnt hit anymore. Maybe swap ember for smokescreen
B de Groot actually already got past stormy sea now, and yeah I remember relying heavily on smokescreen back in darkness, I think now though it only slightly reduces accuracy like the main games unfortunately
Great video! Thanks for the great information! It's really cool to see a smaller channel making good, helpful content! Keep up the good work!
Skitty with blizzard and double slap is a beast
i kinda thought Mudkip/Cubone and Charmander are a good combo when they evolve
Marowak has lighting rod or Swampter for electric moves and rock resistance for Charizard
and Charizard for there grass weakness and Swampters 1 and main weakness.
*for Earthquake and Heat Wave combo*
Wow I managed to pick Cubone and Skitty without knowing all of this.. but after beating the game I definitely agree with them being great
I got Bulbasaur on the quiz, and I had to go for it because I got Bulbasaur on the quiz back when I first played Blue Rescue team years ago! Because of that I even knew the boss hell I’d be dealing with, but I figured if I’d managed back then that I could do it again. And it was just to wholesome not to be back at it with my old duo.
I remember in the old game grass was so broken cause of how good bullet speed was
Quiz gave me a Machop, so I used what they gave me despite being able to choose, and I had never used Machop in these games before.
Whenever I have trouble with a boss I just link every move possible 😂😂
Hahaha I never thought of doing that in the old games! You gave me a good idea thanks! 😂
Rui Sousa Martins dude it worked so good on Articuno my pikachu slammed it with electroball and Iron tail, it was a slaughter
Dark Scream haha that’s sounds like a plan, I’m running with squirtle, treecko and eleckid for flying coverage so I’ll try that!
So I chose Squirtle and got surf from the TM store. After using the dojo tickets I've gotten so far (up to the first boss), I am now lvl 50.
Fake Out has a fairly high chance to flinch ontop of being a ranged move and Pay Day is great for building up your money stocks. Plus, mulit-hit moves are pretty strong in this game, so Fury Swipes gets really Powerful really fast
I always choose treecko as my partner no matter what. He’s been through blue rescue team to dx with me
I became a Machop and chose Pikachu as a partner. It's going well so far, I even picked up a rock move. But Accuracy on it's kinda iffy
I used Cubone and Cybdaquil. They are pretty solid.
Cubone with Boomerang and Smack Down kills crazy.
_Leer._
Needless to say, this playthrough is being especially painful.
Oh right and Vulpix with Imprison in PMD2 is OP.
Imprison is no longer busted, as block and imprison now just prevent movement rather than prevent taking turns.
umm tail whip headbutt and bone club set up a REALLY good link combo in rrt/brt
In Super, Dragon Rage's upgrades are fan-shaped range and ability to hit things offscreen.
Psyduck’s cloud nine is such a quality of life bonus
Gave my cubone Blizzard TM pretty early on (Kekleon shop), upped power accuracy and PP with the drinks, upped SpAtt.
If it's in the same room as me, it dies in a maximum of 2-3 hits (not including bosses obviously), even across the other side of a room. It's honestly a thing of beauty.
I always go with Squirtle and Chikorita. Blizzard + Petal Blizzard is pretty strong!
I was personally thinking that eevee(Espeon) would be very strong after the story and it seems you could easily get hyper beam to wreck anything
Hyper Beam is good, but just make sure you use it wisely. It damages your own teammates too
Yeah I found that out the hard way
I'd argue Glaceon does that better with access to STAB Blizzard.
@@Hyperneosonic97 I play Glaceon and 30pp Blizzard with max power is outright broken to run through dungeon.
@@Yasashi2588 The same can be said of Heat Wave- which is one of the reasons why Charizard is so great.
my 'best' team is me as Cyndaquil and my partner as Mudkip. just spam smokescreen on the boss and its an instant win.
moves not really useful in the main series can be really good in mystery dungeon. link tail whip and a physical move and you just keep doing more and more damage each turn
I got Chikorita and used it. I can't wait for my Meganium/Blastoise combo to get absolutely torched.
I wish we wouldn't have powerful moves like that right at the start, but it makes sense now that we don't have a standard attack anymore
I've seen plenty of sources say that Meowth is also very good too, but everyone's got their opinions.
Went Cubone Psyduck haven't regretted it. Psyduck also gets Hydro Pump later on when it evolves so you get that 10 piercing range, too.
Great stuff man. Just get some editing in there so you dont feel so hard pressed to get your info out and you'll go great
I'm a Meowth and my Partner is a Cyndiquil. I taught my Meowth Thunder and Shadowclaw. May get some new TM stuff when I get deeper in the game.
Good move pool I do recommend changing thunder for thunderbolt since it’ll hit a lot more often. Unless you got rain dance to make sure thunder always hits.
@@destroyerx2513 Have a poke that knows it~
I think any of the starters can be good if you add a good move pool. I an not sire if to keep him as a Meowth later or evolve him.
Dystnine ofc the only reason I like meowth is because of all the TMs it can learn I like running Dig, shadow ball, thunderbolt and I guess slash lol.
In the originals I remember Screech+Slash being busted
Oh dang, Bulbasaur was what I got on the personality test and I stuck with him for the entire game. I also chose Torchic as my partner. Been doing mostly fine throughout the game, though, surprisingly.
I was a Chikorita, but I opted for Eevee and a partner Torchic. We did pretty well throughout the game with enough prep. But glad to know my OG team of Charmander and Treeko are a good choice for a team too~ I also mainly wanted Eevee so I could be a Sylveon in post game. Super fun so far.
Pikachu and trecko as partner: yes it has its flaws but at least I will have more control for AOE discharge later on
I've pretty much always gone with Chikorita, and I actually picked Meowth as my partner.
Man I can't wait to give this game a try im super late on the fun but im going with totodile and bayleaf as my partner!
The best 3° member is golem (geodude)
With the moveset rock throw -rock polish-defense curl-rollout
Its so powerfull
(The 3 last moves are linked)
I got Mudkip as the starter from the quiz and I went with Cubone as the starter. I felt like Cubone was a more uncommon pokemon that gets used in the main games so I went with him. Plus they are both Ground types evolved and it made me feel like those two could co-exist in a team together.
Going with Bulbasaur Squirtle and Absol into Sky Tower wish me luck
I’m going with treehouse, torchic , and marrill
Bulbasaur has always been my favorite, and honestly he can be quite useful.
1. Sleep powder is very good (Even though in DX you have seeds and wands, it's still great to be able to save the bag space and have SP linked to an attack for boss fights.)
(Bulbasaurs Rise Up)
I went with Chikorita as my partner and Torchic per the test.
I'm not sure they compliment each other the best but so far so good.
