Blues fan here - no dog in the hunt. Folks, this shows how incredibly HARD it is to win The Stanley Cup. Both teams were worthy. All 6 games were close and entertaining. As Shannon noted, when you get to the top teams, there’s a lot of parity. Part of that is due to hockey’s hard salary cap. And that’s why the NHL is so compelling. You can’t build a dynasty by spending unlimited money like you can in MLB baseball. Also, due to the physical nature of hockey, there’s also the injury factor. While a player may not be on the injury list, he may be less than full-strength.
It was interesting how the Panthers retooled 2 years ago to become more physical. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers and other Eastern Divisions retool to address next season.

They are NOT close. FLORIDA beat them into the ground. ONly Igor, some luck and the PP made it a series.
      Rangers stars did not "vanish"
      they were MADE invisible
They are built wrong as are the Hughes led Devil-girls
Florida is built right, Vegas too, as is I think Edmonton and Dallas. Boston is built well, just not deep enough and Carolina is built well, but might need to switch a few parts. Ther stars still all produced
Rangers stars Fox (0 goals .5pts per game), Panarin (0 goals most of round 2 and 3) and Zjad to a certain extent (especially during 5 on 5) are not playoff performers
They are not tough enough and not built for the playoffs
If it was not for Igor Rangers would have finished behind CArolina and then bounced by the Isles in 5 or 6.
At this rate they might not win again until after 2040

People often seem to not understand what it means to get more physical or more tough. It does not mean sending Matt Rempe out there to skate in a straight line and throw his body at someone, or get into a fight for no reason. It does not mean Jacob Trouba catching someone with an open ice hit every game or two. It means they need an entire roster of guys willing to take a hit to make a play, willing to go into the corners and dig for pucks every single chance they get, willing to block a shot whenever they can.
Big hits ≠ the toughness it takes to win a playoff series. They need physical guys who can win and then hold onto pucks.

That is a perfect take with a dumb conclusion to start. Basically what you are describing are the Lundkvist Rangers. Trust me Rangers fans know alllllllll about grit and we know we have none. Trouba is the worst contract in the NHL and this tam will go nowhere while he remains on the roster. They have however been drafting those 2 way forwards, they are just not there yet. Cullye, Otthman (who by the way was a big fail not to mention in this video) Berard, etc.. These are all the kinds of players the rangers are in desperate need of. Having a Panarin is fine. But you can only have 1 maybe 2 guys who are strictly scorers. Laff has taken and will continue to take a huge step forward. Understand his points are almost all 5v5. If he gets on the first PP he will likely climb up to and 80-90 pt range and he plays hockey the right way. With heart and grit. But Zbad has to go. Trouba has to go. Miller has regressed every year since he first broke onto the scene. That alone is close to 20 mil in Salary on the wrong kind of players.

Ranger's management has a lot to think about. The right wing on the top line was a black hole all season long (Wheeler, really?), and management did a poor job addressing this at the trade deadline (Roslovic, again really?). This line needs a "Tkachuk-like" player. They also have to address the Fox-Panarin Paradox, which is the Rangers cannot get to the playoffs without their skill but cannot win in the playoffs because their diminutive size and lack of physical play. They need to build a bigger, stronger, and more aggressive team. Rempe was a recognition of this, but he alone is not the answer.
And let's give credit to where credit is due. Over the last three years in aggregate the Panthers are arguably the best team in the NHL. Three years ago they won the President's Trophy. Last year they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals and along the way beat the Boston Bruins who had just had the greatest regular season ever. This year they beat a hot and streaking Lightening team (4 to 1), a solid Bruins team (4 to 2), and the Rangers (4 to 2) who had a great regular season winning the President's cup. They will likely win the Stanley Cup in no more than six games, no matter their opponent. As a Rangers' fan I see no shame in losing to the Panthers. They are just that damn good.

    • @cthomas025
      @cthomas025 3 месяца назад +3

Fox had 23 points in 20 games the last time the Rangers went to the ECF. Don't really think it's a paradox, he wasn't the same after that knee-on-knee collision in the Caps series. Cale Makar is essentially the same size as Fox, as is someone like Kucherov. So they must also be too diminutive and lacking in physical play to win with, yes? Jonathan Marchessault and Brayden Point are both shorter those other players and were among the top points scorers in the league the years they won.

For Rangers fans this feels like 2015 since it has been that long since we’ve truly believed in a team but this roster is in a way different spot. Laf, Fox, Igor no matter how you look at it is a hell of a place to start. Still have their first rounder this year and around $11 million in space. I wonder if they try to get creative and move a piece of this core this offseason. This isn’t some empty prospect pool either the likes of Adam Sykora, Brennan Othmann, Gabe Perreault, and Brett Berard should be supplementing this roster with cheap labor but Drury has to get his hands dirty and truly make this roster his and not just a mess of leftover ingredients he was given by Davidson and Gorton. Schneider is the only RFA they NEED to bring back. I think they should in all honesty move on from Lindgren unless he’s willing to take an extremely team friendly deal and Kakko is best used as trade bait potentially along with the 30th overall pick for a RW1 of some kind. They have to reshape the back end and that starts with finding a way off Trouba. Give Zac Jones a shot but also bring in Montour or Pesce from UFA. Shop Zibanejad but I’m really not sure there’s gonna be anything out there that makes sense but who knows

People are constantly making the Edmonton McDavids joke, but the fact of the matter is, Oilers are far less dependant on McDavid than Rangers are on Shesterkin. McDavid has been really bad in many games during the playoffs. Countless turnovers, bad passes and a lack of offensive production. But the Oilers have generally been just fine without his contributions, with different guys stepping up at different times.
But if Shesterkin flounders even a little bit, it feels like Rangers have no chance of winning. And honestly, it's kind of the same thing with Dallas and Oettinger. Which is why it's so funny hearing people talk about the Oilers' supposed lack of depth, when Oilers and Panthers are genuinely the only two teams in the conference finals who don't need any one player to single-handedly win them games.

Panthers have great structural defense. Great forecheck and gap control. The entire team buys in. And they have the best shutdown defenseman in the league. They are battle tested and have been on the warpath all year. I knew they were going to the cup finals 3 weeks ago when I learned that the players took it upon themselves to rent ice 2 weeks after the season ended to get back to work. The winner of the west is going to have their hands full. This team doesn't take half the game off like most teams. They roll 4 lines for 60 minutes and grind you down. Then take games over in the 3rd period. Good luck.

    • @vampfashions

Maybe you didn't hear that the Oilers and McDavid began their own training camp fully a month before the training camp opened, and then took the 1st 15 games off as "extended training". Since then they have had the best record in hockey. We probably would have had trouble against Winnipeg, maybe against Colorado, but sadly for the league, no other team is really built to beat the Oilers, since they were all built to beat losing teams & structures.

As a Rangers fan, i think we have to accept that we were just outplayed and the better team won. Congrats to the Panthers. That being said, I am curious how this series would have looked if Panarin and Zibanejad actually showed up and were in it from the get go. Even though the Panthers defense is awesome, it is hard to accept a guy with a 11.5 million cap hit to do close to nothing. It is not just that he didn't score but he was hardly visible. He and Zib - along a couple of other guys - have to be better. I could go on about the mediocre defense of Miller and Trouba...
Anyway, the biggest question mark to me going forward: Is this core good enough with Panarin and Zibanejad on the front? As much as it pains me to say this, I don't think so. On the positive side: Lafreniere looks pretty promising right now and he should certainly be the guy to build around in the next few years.

As a suffering Rangers fan for all 25 years of my life, it's tragic to see the organization waste a generational goalie's talent for the second time in the last 20 years. The Rangers have virtually the same issues that they did in 2014 when they lost to LA. They rely to heavily on finesse/skill players, have a weak defense and pray that Shesty or Hank in those years would bail them out.
As much as the core shit the bed, and they did - it's hard for me to blame Panarin or really say he's not performing to his Contract value. Throughout this run Panarin was fairly consistent, he played the game you expected him too - he definitely needs to shoot the puck more but he's historically been more pass oriented, same with Mika and there in lies the problem. Mika for as good as he is, he's an empty vessel. No physicality, and he's consistently inconsistent. Almost every year he starts off slow and picks up after the holidays. He's not great on the faceoff and to be honest. I dont think he's the #1 center on this team. Trochek is everything Mika is not. And the Kreids-Mika line, it doesn't work, it's not the RW whose the problem, those two do not score enough 5-on-5 goals together. If you keep Mika, you got a break them apart.
And not for nothing, but Drury blew this deadline - if what people in NY were saying is true about Guentzel a 1st and either Othmann or Perrault + Kakko, I mean seeing the haul that the Pen's actually got it seems like that large of a payout wouldn't have been needed but Guentzel has always killed the Rangers and would have really strengthened this team more than Wennberg and Roslovic did. Super disappointed.
If I'm in the Front Office the only players who've earned a spot on this roster next year are Shesty, Trochek, Panarin, Kreids, Fox and Laffy. I'd be open to offers on everyone else but realistically Lindgren, Miller and Schneider will all be back next year, despite Schneider having an especially tough playoffs this year in the D-Zone. I'd let all the UFA's go and I'd make it a priority to trade Trouba, or buy him out - give the C to Kreids, and try to move on from Mika for a more physical center or ideally move Trochek up to the first line with Kreids and bring Stammer in to play with Panarin, and let Goodrow go. I know Goodrow is a vet and a grinder but there's better players for $3M a year.

Wouldn't hate to see Trouba, Lindgren, and Kakko go out the door. They put a lot into the Rangers, but ultimately we need some real upgrades and don't have a ton of money to do it. We have young players coming up that have a real shot of being better than the players going out, and cost a lot less money. Or it gives us some flexibility to find UFAs or trade targets that can provide more come playoff time.
Florida exposed some glaring weaknesses that the Rangers have been dealing with for years: slow skating, bad puck retrievals in the D zone, and weak to a strong forecheck. You can either solve that by getting huge guys that win board battles, or get D-men that can work the puck around faster. The margin in this series was razor thing, with all but 1 game being decided by 1 goal (even that one game should count imo, ie own goal + ENG). If you can replace Trouba's poor defense and awful penalties with someone who is league average in those categories, it's very likely that this series could have gone the other way. If Kakko (or the bottom six other than Goodrow) actually contributed at all, maybe that swings another game.
All I know is that the quality vs quantity conversation has a really simple answer: why not both? Being average at 5v5 is just not good enough. The meme is over. Find some even strength scoring and it won't cost you the entire season just because your PP dried up for a week.
I think Drury probably just fills out the roster with the remaining cap space and runs it back again, largely unchanged. I think this would be a mistake. I think one or two large trades might be necessary to actually solve some of these larger fundamental issues that the Rangers have had for years now. I guess we'll see what happens.

      Rangers stars did not "vanish"

Rangers stars Fox (0 goals .5pts per game), Panarin (0 goals most of round 2 and 3) and Zjad to a certain extent (especially during 5 on 5) are not playoff performers

Rangers fan here. This roster needs a sprinkle of the 2011-12 Tortorella-coached team. Not necessarily an all-out commitment to shot-blocking at all costs (which, as we saw, eventually left them totally out of gas by Game 6 of the ECF against the Devils), but that team had the grit and sandpaper the current roster desperately needs. Depth players like Brandon Prust, Mike Rupp, and Brian Boyle (or Matteau and Noonan, for that matter) become a much bigger factor when time and space dries up in the postseason. As far as Panarin, all he's doing for me is triggering memories of Mike Gartner's time on Broadway. Somehow, every year, when the puck dropped for Game 1 of round 1, he was never the same dynamic player he was during the regular season.

He really showed some stuff.... but doesn't have the power/hitting you mention, few Rangers do and when they do as with Jimmy Vesey they get targeted and injured. I would love to see Chytil come back and play as well as I think he can, but like most others I am afraid he might be to fragile. If he spent the off season with Kreider really hard it would help him out a great deal.

The Rangers had a great season. They took a gamble at the trade deadline to keep the roster intact. Their achilles heal has been the hole at RW on the top line. Nobody has adequately filled that spot since Buch.
They need to fill that spot, and fix their D pairs. Lots of work to do there.

I agree that the real story in NY is the same as it's been for a while. Panarin sort of disappears in the playoffs, where there's a lot less ice given to you on basically every play. He doesn't get held completely off the scoresheet, but he's not a typical 120-point-level threat in the postseason either. He's unwilling to go to hard areas and take contact, and ends up playing to not get hit, which is a recipe for disaster. Case in point, he had 1 goal and 5 assists in his last 10 games. That's not nearly good enough production from your franchise player.

I truly think that being under Laviolette for another year will have compounding benefits for this team and they will probably be better next year, especially in playoffs.
Strongly disagree with trading Zibanejad, and not just cause I love him. Hes just too central to this team, and we all know how good he can be when hes hot. Breaks my heart but yeah they should trade Kakko to a less competitive team, at this point we're just holding each other back.
Unless Trouba was morbidly injured and thats why he was so bad, he really needs to go, but idk if I see management actually pulling the trigger on that

    • @dieselbaby
      @dieselbaby 3 месяца назад +1

Nah, Zibanejad needs to go...I don't see the Rangers getting rid of Kreider and at a certain point when you realize that the Zibanejad/Kreider line has not been able to work with anyone, you start to think that perhaps the problem isn't those other players getting added, but the duo themselves. Zibanejad is SOFT, just like Panarin -- he doesn't give 100% effort and this has been a problem all season. We will never win a cup with these guys at the core of the team. Trouba sucks as well, it's an embarrassment that he's the captain.

Igor this postseason was absolutely insane, there were amazing moments and games that I'll remember for the rest of my life. I gotta be honest. Jacob Trouba is the second worst team captain I've seen. Ideally you want to have someone who's a leader on & off the ice, with the off-ice part being the bench not the penalty box. He's also, like, not even their second best defenseman. The fact that someone like Panarin or Zibanejad or even Krieder didn't get it is incredible to me. It's like they just put everyone's name in a hat to decide who gets to wear the C next.

That's a long time and a lot of money for someone who looked like they'd rather be DJ'ing in Europe. 3 points in his last 8 games. His NMC is the killer. Kakko is done as a Ranger. They could've traded him for Vatrano and Henrique, but instead the held onto him and will probably trade his rights to someone who's willing to give him a change of scenery. Trouba's play has fallen off a cliff. They might trade him once his modified NMC kicks in. Schneider and Lindgren are due for a raise as RFAs. As for "on the way"....you missed Othmann, who could be a beast. Also, Garand is waiting in the wings after Igor.

Some thoughts on the NYR - FLA series. I noticed the Rangers were not forechecking as much in this series They did not get much offence from their top guys - Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin who were invisible in this series . They did not have Rangers close to the net to put the puck in. Rangers got more production from secondary guys like Lafreniere and Fox . Trouba was invisible in this series. The goalie Sesterken was their best player because he kept them in against a tremendous Florida offence which won.

They came in with a 7-0 postseason streak, went from “sweep” mentality to panic mode after game 5. They celebrated Game 6 like they really dodged a bullet to avoid a game 7.
While they won, that did not bode well going into the FLA series. The Cats were a much better opponent and NY never really regained their pre-Game 4 form from the Caps and Canes series.

Keys to winning the cup, win the president's trophy, finish the next two season around the 5th to 10th overall seed, get a cup. That pattern is pretty consistent. If FL wins, then the Rangers got the cup in 2026. Trouba for 8 million, yikes. Who would take that though? Reinhart will be a free agent, maybe add him? Rempe just looks like a circus act. Rangers have something that 31 other teams don't have, the best goalie in the league. That's a pretty good building block. So if Panarin is a problem because of lack of success against FL, that means Boston needs to move off of Pastrnak, and Tampa needs to move off of Kucherov. All of them had rough series and all of them are great players. I don't think he is the problem. Maybe a few extra million a year of what he is worth, but you need guys to get you to the playoffs, he is one of those. Then the other guys for playoff depth for the dirty goals. What kind of best friend breaks up his best friend's shutout in game 6? Maybe he should be traded.

Trouba can go away for any kind of draft capital as long as salary is not retained. Zibanejad as a full NMC so good luck with that but ideally any team rebuilding that would offer a 1st and something else would be fine. Maybe they would go to Utah together for their 1st this year and their 2025 2nd as well as giving back NYs 2nd next year. Utah still has plenty of 2nd rd picks and can really drive some excitement landing 2 big name players while NY gets #6 pick this year and fills their 2nd rd pick gap as well as getting $15m in cap space. Add in Trouba savings and that's $23m off the cap and all it cost was your biggest defensive liability and 2 forwards who struggle at even strength.

All the teams in the Conference Finals have some serious challenges with the salary cap to get back here, with the Rangers probably having the easiest path back to the Final Four in terms of roster construction. Winning the President's Trophy, getting to the Final Four, and not being a team that gets pushed around is a feat in this League. Just like when they blew up a lot of their roster after getting rag dolled in the infamous line brawl with the Capitals, the Rangers really need to be careful not to mess up their roster when they're this close. They just need a couple pieces and should be all in at next season's trade deadline, because they might have to take a step back the season after that due to the salary cap.

I hope they don’t forget how scary the penguins looked on that last push or what things might have been like to face Boston in the first round. These guys made strides this year but they better be hungrier than ever this summer. They’re that much closer, with that much fewer teams to be concerned about. I hope they each go home and work like panarin did last summer when he strength trained for the first converted effort in his career. What would another of those summers do for his playoff game? Give him the confidence to be more physical and be more aggressive on shooting? Laffy was out skated last year so he skated all summer and finally got to the places on the ice to use his skills. Kreider and zibanedjad should feel the pressure this summer and look to gain that edge in training. Laffy and panarin should be betting on what helped them last summer. The depth should all be pushing skating speed strength and stick skills all summer. Make it part of the culture and they’ll push over the hump with the best roster they can get in training camp. I still have faith that they don’t crumple like NJ next season. Hope they all realize it’s not a sprint it’s more than a marathon.
