It's absolutely incredible. The last three songs are so epic, and Window of the Waking Mind is one of their very best.

A Disappearing Act was the best surprise on an album I've heard in a long time. It's a full on dance track with common chord progressions, and yet manages to be dark and seductive as well as epic. Twisting vocals, excellent dynamic contrast, and bombastic synth sounds. Coheed has dabbled with this realm of music, but I can't remember them fully diving in, and they immediately excelled.

couldn't agree more, I disagree fully with the video about that song. It was such a breath of fresh air and is a big highlight on the album for me. Though pace wise I think having Love Murder One follow it up wasn't great. It's a good song but not the best placement for it imo

Coheed are such an unbelievably brilliant band that they could play a genre of music I absolutely hate and somehow make me love the way they do it. They are just rock, pop, prog, metal, electro, classical, funk and punk all mixed together to make this unexplainably beautiful soup. I don’t care what style of music you like and dislike, you can’t not appreciate the quality of this band as songwriters.

  • @kell7689

Love Murder One is a big standout for me. 2nd place goes to Ladders of Supremacy. Honourable mention to the intro track which transcended my consciousness to another dimension for a good minute.
I really like Blood but totally agree with what you said - I find myself skipping ahead sometimes. Disappearing Act is actually one of my favourites though. I love when Coheed does a 180 and gives us something totally unexpected. Can't complain. Plus it's kind of a banger.

I was introduced to Coheed through Vaxis Act I and loved that album, I love this one even more. I'm not really super loyal to particular genres, I love BIG music, stuff that feels epic and makes me feel tiny. I really love when an album has so many mixed genres like this album does, I get some epic marching band, some punk, some metal, some pop rock, a dash of emo, etc. There's a dash of Queen and I even get some Michael Jackson feels occasionally.
    I love this freaking album.

It’s funny because as huge a following that Coheed has these days, I have only met ONE person that even knew who they were lol. I look forward to becoming more familiar with this new album. At some point I’m going to delve into the entire comic book side of Coheed too. I get the concept of the story but feel like I’m not quite invited to the party just yet. Great review! Tbh, for me this album was kinda disappointing as a longtime coheed and cambria fan. it felt like an overblown and overproduced arena rock album that while shorter than Vaxis Act I (thank god). Had less meat and potatoes or anything going on like they just played everything safe and stayed in a comfort zone to which i can say The Dark Sentencer off Act I had more riffs and nastiness than the whole of Act II had. Which is weird because the concept for Act II is them being on the run from government forces chasing the Unheavenly Creatures throughout the album. To which you think something like that would have some speed and a sense of urgency and looming fear. I dont mind dialing this back and making a punkier sounding album akin to SSTB, but that just wasnt there. like it feels like someone said that people only listen to Co&Ca for the hooks and choruses and just overdid the whole album with it.

That's the beauty of Coheed. I feel like they've done this on every album. Once your ear catches on to the background riffs (usually Travis), it adds a whole new dimension to the song. From the samples you've shown, I like the instrumentation a lot. I just can't get passed Claudio's vocals to fully enjoy it. This may sound strange, but his highs are very jarring for me. I will agree however, that Coheed is a progressive metal band though. For anyone looking into something on the heavier side i.e. death/doom check out Guillotine A.D. and their album Born to Fall.

When I first heard Coheed, I hated and mocked Claudio's voice. It took me a few years to get passed it, but now they're my favorite band. Its actually a pretty common story among Coheed fans.

I’m honestly a bit disappointed in this album. Don’t get me wrong I love love love this band. I saw them on their first ever tour in NJ at the asbury convention center. They most definitely have their own sound and are also extremely talented.
No this album definitely did not live up to vaxis 1: unheavenely creatures. It may be because they released the best songs waaaay prior to the album and I definitely outplayed them. I haven’t had a lot of time to listening to the rest over again but I can’t help to say i found myself pretty disinterested. I over players the last album to the point where my son won’t let me listen to it in the car anymore, haha. I can’t say the same for this album. I love a few song but it just doesn’t hold a candle to the last album.

How is Coheed NOT a prog. metal band? Do people somehow think metal = screaming or something?

  • @Eyes-Scream0213

As a long time Coheed fan this is the first time I'll say that I didn't like the album much. For me Vaxis 2 is the laziest album they have right now.
The guitar riffs are not so memorable and more on techno. The last album The Unheavenly Creatures have lots of pop songs which is kind of a let down.
As much as I enjoy The Liars Club, Comatose and Shoulders it seems that this new album is not my cup of tea

I see it as a strength of the band that I don't like everything that they do it means they took risks and play what they want to play and not just what the fans want to hear. I understand that it may not be to your taste but lazy is not the word I'd use for such a musically diverse and genre inclusive band.

@@TheCoheedIndeed Lazy is the exact word for this album. 60% of it is chorus, chorus, claudio forces some lyrics over ambient noise, chorus. They managed to pull out a worse album than YOTBR.

I’m a sucker for concept albums, but I checked out on Coheed when I realized their stories basically all boil down to fridge a woman, so the hero can go be a badass. Once that clicked for me, I couldn’t not feel gross listening. It’s good music, but there’s a ton of good music out there that doesn’t make me feel like I need a shower for my brain to wash the taint of their lyrics off afterwards.
