Best option will be a mix of option 2 and 3. Use the transmission case of option 2 for 19.99 and the links of option 3 for 9.89 and also the foams for 7.90 , the cover for 15.99 , ending with a total of 53.77. Just 0.59 over the budget
Option 4 (modified option 3): Use one set of foams and cut them in half. That's what most of the SCX24 guys do. I run them like that in Scramblers and it works great. That frees up $3.95. Definitely keep the steering link upgrade. Ditch the alloy upper truss. Keep the rear diff cover. That leaves you with $23.35, so add in the alloy transmission case for $19.99. That leaves you with $3.36. Use a couple of cents from that to throw some grease in the stock shocks and maybe print out some pre-load spacers from Thingiverse if you need them.
But where is the video of you guys using these trucks? I thought you said in the first tht there would be some usage video too. Am I just missing it? Great series either way. I'm new into these little truck and thought yours were some of the best videos on upgrade I've seen yet.
Fun is spending hours making a fire extingisher with a 1/4 inch label and a little stick man pointing it even made the little diamond insignia, my little bungees made from pony tail holders look legit, I almost got the full kit, rifle, shovel, pick , tow rope, I might be a little obsessive. I got a Deadbolt with a creep body, SCRUB, Camo paint, Wranglers, Metal beadlocks brass knuckles, internal spring shocks, and a little lead on the servo and rear diff, I'm having a blast with mine.
I would recommend a mix of parts from Option 2 and Option 3: Option 2 - trans case ($19.99) ; Option 3 - steering links ($9.89) + CI foams ($7.90) + Rear cover ($15.99). Although it's slightly over the budget at $53.77, I think those changes are the most effective.
Yea they do!!! They are like Gremlins!!!! I got a Betty for Christmas last year now I have 6 24's!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 I like the Treal shocks, but what has worked for me is a little dab of dielectric grease in the shocks.i would go with opt3
I got a Deadbolt about 8 weeks ago and slowly threw on my hop ups. It was fun to follow along and get this thing to perform MUCH better on the rocks. This SCX24 has been more fun in the backyard than my SCX10s. Thanks, I enjoyed this budget build more than any other so far.
Your guys should do a budget build off with comp style flat rail trucks, start with a builder's kit, Axial, Element, SSD, or axle kit and trans (with a similar total price), and then the chassis kit.
Great series 👏, as far as the shocks , I have pretty much tried them all . And for me the emulsion shocks actually work the best . I use a 40 w Traxxas oil . And there is dampening. And takes a lot of the bouncing down the rocky straightaway on our crawler track. If they are sticking they have replaced them for me . Much appreciated. Because when Done right these little shocks are smooth and with the light springs work great . I used mofo's flex blades with them and now they are made of aluminum along with his shock plate mounts also aluminum now . I also use a small washer in between the plate and upper shock mounts. To keep the shocks in line helps with any binding. I want to hear more about the tire foams and how well it works out on the rocks . I have always used the stock foams . And I do see how my Patagonia tires are looking very soft as our crawlers have gotten heavier over the months of mods . I like the tires you chose. We chose Patagonia because they don't rub and I hate rubbing 😒. And that they really work well . On our natural rock course. 🪨 they just stick and don't slip . And I have tried and spent money on a lot of tires that I just won't use . I always go back to Patagonia . Thus hobby with these scx24's is so much fun . I find myself working on them 7 to 8 hours a day 3 to 4 days a week . I'm retired and glad to have all my grandkids enjoying them . We have 7 now . Lol 😆 🤣
Awesome content. I put in the steering links and the shocks. The shocks were prone to binding and took an afternoon worth of fiddling to get in, but SO MUCH BETTER than stock. Worth the cost and mucking around (heck - that’s the hobby, so all good!).
And now I backed another Kickstarter! Hoping to see a two front axle option for us with 4WS rigs. Plus excited to see it included the bumper you designed!!
Excellent video Josh. Your enthusiasm shows on this project. Good info man. Because of this series my daughter now has a SCX24 DeadBolt. Its been fun tuning in with you and Matt. Cheers!!!
I ended up with CI soft foams in the rear and medium up front in my SCX24 but I also cut them in half. You've got way more patience than me if you were able to stuff that whole foam in a tire AND assemble those RC4WD wheels.
Great series guys it’s crazy how many parts are out their for this little rigs. Seems like their coming out with new parts for the scx24s. Can’t wait for another budget build series
The steering link upgrade is a must, helped so much on mine. I’m super on fence with foams, running mine with those steelies and no foams, it stays air tight and let tyre comfort around obstacles. Shocks I want oil filled ones but they all seem a bit wonky, grabbed some power hobby knockoffs from Amazon with no seals for like a tenner and they work okayish for now. Portals seem hella cool but all the 24 need are cvd’s for sharper turning
This series has been so great, seeing how quickly each of you went in different directions with your builds. I've really enjoyed it, and can't wait to see what you choose next. RTR, or kit. Buggy, crawler or scale vehicle. Whatever it is, I hope it'll be as great as this series has been. 👍🏻
Another great 'Budget Build Off' gentleman! Really enjoyed this, almost convinced me to buy one (but not quite😉)! As always though, the true winner is us, the viewers!Btw Josh, option #3 or a mix of #2 and #3, as mentioned.
Funny how so much has changed in less than a year. Now, we have alloy portal axles, brass portal axles, CVD's, universals, wide axles (+16mm), adjustable hub wheels, multiple models of 64mm tires, multiple comp style chassis with sliders and flat skids, better stock electronics, two new models of SCX24, and tons of other stuff. I know you don't want to do the same model twice, but I think it'd be a lot of fun to do another build-off using current parts, then test your old builds against the new ones.
I love watching these series!! Awesome work!!! Great information Harley!! Would love to see the next budget build on the Element Platform maybe builders kit V2.
Two different builds. Looks then performance or Pure performance then looks? I can't decide. Our friend from the north or good old U S of A. I'll take BOTH!😁GREAT job guys.👍
I actually cut those micro foams into two or three pieces depending on the tire since they're so wide. This would also work with your style of budget build since you can claim only half the cost if don't use the whole package of foams 😏
I went with the Carisma MSA-1E Aluminum Oil Shocks. I had to make custom mounts, since they were longer but the articulation is smooth as butter now. Since I made custom mounts and limited the shocks I don’t have that mister truck look.
I think the only suggestion I would have for stuff like this is pitting the trucks against each other after each week on a course to see how they compare. It's neat to watch the evolution of the truck, but we don't get to see the practical side of how it actually works just that you spent/saved money on the truck.
Awesome job Josh!! Betty is looking awesome, been working on my Betty mostly Treal, and Hot racing been following both of You guys budget build both winners in my book
I'd like to see a budget build off where you have to build a one off crawler with strictly off the shelf parts from a bunch of different makers, and maybe bonus points for *more* different makers.
Awesome rigs,, they both stand out nicely. Can't wait to see it on the rocks. I'd like to see a budget build off with the Atlas 6x6. It's a rig that has limited aftermarket parts. Something... more challenging. I purchased one, and haven't seen much possibilities.
This is great stuff. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Love the betty, I've got a 10 scale body thats not setting on anything at the moment, so it was fun to see the little one go together.
Either do a mini z or a 1/8 truggy budget build in the same fashion of a weekly budget. Otherwise it would be fun to actually see a traditional budget build where you do the cheapest things you could find and do the scx24 again for that. Limit of 3 upgrades per week for 8 weeks and see who spends the least
I just installed the Yeah Racing steering linkage, for the price I like it a lot. Another shock option is from MoFo RC, actually just put them on last night. And I just ordered the micro foams!!
Hot racing steering link is the best it’s the way the drag link mounts to the top instead of the side that’s why it jiggles, with the drag link mounted to the top of the tire rod lemonade,s All of the slap
super lube silicon oil 100cst(10w) with the soft springs in the oil shocks on my c10 gets the bounce out of the truck and feel just a bit harder then stock
I recently installed some Crawler Innovations foams, in the same configuration you suggested: soft front, med rear. I cut mine in half, so they were about 30% wider than stock. It still feels plenty supported, but the tire still flexes on extreme side angles. Time will tell how they last through water, as I run around the river bank frequently. The stock RC4WD foams were very degraded..
I usually caution to much flex with crawlers (must admit tho) I've never seen so much flex outta the factory, as my RTR Axial Gladiator & it's amazing even in RTR form, have to admit I was impressed..
Tell you what option to go with even though we all know all the parts are staying on the $4000 budget build rig lol. Been a great series really enjoyed it. See you at Pro-Line by the Fire😎
Yup! Started with 2, already up to four counting the hard body and Origin RC Scrambler I’m building. Any reason you didn’t go with a Origin RC Scrambler or Warthog (don’t remember who that’s by)
There are some videos missing, week 7 and 8 of the scale builders guild and the running videos - thats disappointing after watching all of those so far.
Lmao 🤣 Which option!! Like you’re gonna bother taking it off 🤣. Great build. You should have thrown $500 and play Matt’s can’t math back at him 😎. Great build and series! Keep up the good work.
Best option will be a mix of option 2 and 3. Use the transmission case of option 2 for 19.99 and the links of option 3 for 9.89 and also the foams for 7.90 , the cover for 15.99 , ending with a total of 53.77. Just 0.59 over the budget
100% this
That was my thought exactly, definitely this option, combination of 2 and 3
"Welcome to the Budget Build guys, I spent $4000 so you don't have to!"
I’m a public servant!
$1260.21 … I mean 399.99 for me.Great series though !
Josh could do a SCX24 BBO part 2 and built two trucks with all his parts that didn't make the cut
Only $4,000? Thinking twice that...
Matt, surely you know NOT to get involved in a contract with Josh.
Keep 3, but delete the rear truss and put on the aluminum trans case.
Has the running video ever been released? Can't seem to find it. Would be really interested to see it.
Love it! How about a Tamiya CC-02 budget build off for the next one? Should be a challenging one :D
Wow that be awesome. Betty is looking awesome dude I like it
Fun is spending hours making a fire extingisher with a 1/4 inch label and a little stick man pointing it even made the little diamond insignia, my little bungees made from pony tail holders look legit, I almost got the full kit, rifle, shovel, pick , tow rope, I might be a little obsessive. Can vouch for the foams and steering links(use treal for the links much tighter than other brands)
hmmm. "Choose your own adventure".. that's an interesting method for Budget Build...I vote for Option 3. Nice build!!
Love your build that Betty is awesome.👏👍💯
Man I absolutely love the wheel and tire combo
I got a Deadbolt about 8 weeks ago and slowly threw on my hop ups. It was fun to follow along and get this thing to perform MUCH better on the rocks. This SCX24 has been more fun in the backyard than my SCX10s.
Thanks, I enjoyed this budget build more than any other so far.
Your guys should do a budget build off with comp style flat rail trucks, start with a builder's kit, Axial, Element, SSD, or axle kit and trans (with a similar total price), and then the chassis kit.
Great build Josh. Have a great time at Proline.
Great series 👏, as far as the shocks , I have pretty much tried them all . And for me the emulsion shocks actually work the best . I use a 40 w Traxxas oil . And there is dampening. RC4WD wheels and tyres also a faff, but look and perform great vs stock (once you can finally get ‘em together)
I put waterproof grease in my stock shocks works great 👍
Scx24....No budget build off! The only limit is time?
And now I backed another Kickstarter! Hoping to see a two front axle option for us with 4WS rigs. Plus excited to see it included the bumper you designed!!
foams and links for sure!! great build series!! budget build a lmt!!
Excellent video Josh. Your enthusiasm shows on this project. Good info man. Because of this series my daughter now has a SCX24 DeadBolt. Its been fun tuning in with you and Matt. Cheers!!!

Axial ryft budget build. Love the truck man! Awesome build. Had a blast watching this series!
I think sending them to Smiggen’s Folly for a side by side comparison would be pretty awesome. Great build!
With fwd weight bias trucks ive had great success running the firmer of the 2 diff foams in the front on 1/10th scale trucks
I would go with option 2. Like your technical videos. You and Matt are a good contrast. Looking forward to your next project.
ok i need those portals when they come out for my betty, but ill have to find some different brass hexs for them
This series has been so great, seeing how quickly each of you went in different directions with your builds. I've really enjoyed it, and can't wait to see what you choose next. RTR, or kit. Buggy, crawler or scale vehicle. Whatever it is, I hope it'll be as great as this series has been. 👍🏻
I started this budget build with a c-10. I now own 4 of these. One for each family member was my train of thought 😉🤦🏻♂️
This has been a great series. Lots of information and ideas for the scx24s. Thanks for the great videos.
For the next budget build you guys should do VS4-10 Ultras!
"Budget Vanquish"
Another great 'Budget Build Off' gentleman! Really enjoyed this, almost convinced me to buy one (but not quite😉)! As always though, the true winner is us, the viewers!Btw Josh, option #3 or a mix of #2 and #3, as mentioned.
Annnnnndddd now I have portals coming for my SCX😂. My c10 is so over built already. Great series of videos 👌🏻
What parts would you use? Plan to do similar build.
Just found these, love the series, but can’t find the running video you promised. Desperate to see this beast run!
Lol ya right! Everyone knows you are not taking upgrades off. I absolutely do not blame you either!
I love watching these series!! Awesome work!!! Great information Harley!! Would love to see the next budget build on the Element Platform maybe builders kit V2.
Go with all of the options. It’s worth it to make the Wednesday night live stream entertaining
I always do that too... In fact, my local shop literally recommends it.
We all thought that's what there for 😂
I believe the see CI foams are meant to be cut to whatever width you need.
Option 4 throw it all on before the running vid :)
Wpl Budget project for sure! :D
Will you do the upgrades and then do the final run video with them installed? Maybe you can sneak in a set of the portal axles!
Go with option 2. Do something a little out of left field and do a budget build on a Redcat Gen8! Budget truck for a budget build?
Yes exactly soft in front medium in the back for climb in those hills seems to work really good
I went with the Carisma MSA-1E Aluminum Oil Shocks. I had to make custom mounts, since they were longer but the articulation is smooth as butter now. Since I made custom mounts and limited the shocks I don’t have that mister truck look.
Nice job!
Looking forward to the running video.👍
I might have to order those portals. Looks sweet.
You guys are so fun with these build offs. That time went by so fast. Thank you.
Option 3, but get rid of the foams and get the trans cover from option 2
Steering is huge......I think the foams are a better suspension upgrade than the shocks.....I say option 3 plus the Trans case
I think the only suggestion I would have for stuff like this is pitting the trucks against each other after each week on a course to see how they compare. It's neat to watch the evolution of the truck, but we don't get to see the practical side of how it actually works just that you spent/saved money on the truck.
I think a mix of option 2 and 3. Use the transmission from option 2 19.99 and everything except the diff cover from option 3.
I think a cool budget build would be some sort of comp crawler or rock bouncer like the ryft
Awesome rigs,, they both stand out nicely. Can't wait to see it on the rocks. I'd like to see a budget build off with the Atlas 6x6. It's a rig that has limited aftermarket parts. Something... more challenging. I purchased one, and haven't seen much possibilities.
I’ve been wanting portal axles for so long about time someone brings them to market
This is great stuff. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Love the betty, I've got a 10 scale body thats not setting on anything at the moment, so it was fun to see the little one go together.
Great video and build Josh! Can’t wait to see your next budget build sir. Maybe a core truck build???
$53.18 balance
Option 1.5!!
$19.99 trans
$15.99 cover
$9.89 links
$6.89 truss
$0.42 remaining!!
Skip the shocks and foams!
Can't wait to crawl some micros at Proline with you 💪
Either do a mini z or a 1/8 truggy budget build in the same fashion of a weekly budget. Otherwise it would be fun to actually see a traditional budget build where you do the cheapest things you could find and do the scx24 again for that. Limit of 3 upgrades per week for 8 weeks and see who spends the least
I was sure you were trying to replace all the parts so that you could refund a whole stock truck in the end lol
I think you should keep the trans case and the foams steering link diff cover
I just installed the Yeah Racing steering linkage, for the price I like it a lot. Another shock option is from MoFo RC, actually just put them on last night. And I just ordered the micro foams!!
(But Wait There's More) 😂 the pitchman had me at the edge of my seat Ha Ha..... Great finale Josh
Hot racing steering link is the best it’s the way the drag link mounts to the top instead of the side that’s why it jiggles, with the drag link mounted to the top of the tire rod lemonade,s All of the slap
Sure enjoyed this series. Just watched it yet again and I'm super curious about your portal rig. Any running video? Thoughts?
Bud I don’t know what to your doing but you are losing serious weight. Keep up the great job!!
How about you guys start with the vs4 10 chassis kit and do the budget build off. It would be interesting to see what you guys do with them.
I would do option 3 minus the foams, add the trans case. Or just blow the budget and do the foams too!
Where is the running video?
Option three hands down
Next build should be a 6x6 recovery vehicle. I would love to see the different styles you two would come up with.
super lube silicon oil 100cst(10w) with the soft springs in the oil shocks on my c10 gets the bounce out of the truck and feel just a bit harder then stock
You should do a video about that power wagon build you have going on too!!
Thanks for the video, I love some of these new parts coming. ✌
Did you cut the foams to size? or did you get that entire foam in the tire??
I usually caution to much flex with crawlers (must admit tho) I've never seen so much flex outta the factory, as my RTR Axial Gladiator & it's amazing even in RTR form, have to admit I was impressed..
Awesome! Nice portal find.
You should do a budget build for something you can use at a hill climb event.
Tell you what option to go with even though we all know all the parts are staying on the $4000 budget build rig lol. Been a great series really enjoyed it. See you at Pro-Line by the Fire😎
Option 3 but ditch the rear link mount and buy high clearance links
I have enjoyed this build very much and found it informative
Option three but add the trans case and get rid of the trust
Yup! Started with 2, already up to four counting the hard body and Origin RC Scrambler I’m building. Any reason you didn’t go with a Origin RC Scrambler or Warthog (don’t remember who that’s by)
the facial hair change every week on the recap was fantastic
There are some videos missing, week 7 and 8 of the scale builders guild and the running videos - thats disappointing after watching all of those so far.
Great build. I'd go with option 3 since it'll have the best performance for the dollar. How about no prep semis for the next build?
Yeah I run the same foam they are great
Remember them shocks do go on a right way.
I put mine on wrong and they fell off.
Live and learn. You don't realize it because there so small.
Lmao 🤣 Which option!! Like you’re gonna bother taking it off 🤣. Great build. You should have thrown $500 and play Matt’s can’t math back at him 😎. Great build and series! Keep up the good work.
