@@bobburroughs6241 The eighties were brilliant music wise ' I think the last decade for decent music right through ' still I guess it a matter of opinion ' I was born late 60s ' so I grew up with 70s and 80s stuff.
I was 14 years of age in 1978. I loved this song the first time I heard it. So much has changed in 45 years.....my Mum and Dad are both gone........and London (where I was born and raised) is so different from the London of my teenage years. As I listen to this song, I am transported back to the late 70s, and a feeling of nostalgia engulfs me........how I wish I could go back, just for a short while...............
Annie has a PITCH PERFECT voice She has a five-octave vocal range with incredible register - THE BEST!!!!! I have played this song every night since it came out right before bed! What about that awesome base line!! When I first heard this I fell madly in love with Annie and I still am!
I was 8 years old in 1978ish when this song was a hit and receiving airplay. I knew then as i do today as a 54 year old that the lady singer had a truly special voice. I would love to see Annie and renaissance play this song today. It is one of them songs that I will never tire listening to
2023 and still listening. This reminds me so much of hitchhiking with my then boyfriend and the excitement of being together on the road; he lived up north, too, so the everlasting association was made between these lyrics, him and the north. I had such a youthful, all-encompassing desire to be always with him; I was so young (and foolish) and I knew next to nothing about the real world.
Annie Haslam has a great voice. This was really their only chart success in the Uk reaching I think a high of 10 and released on the Warner Bros label. However they sold a lot of albums and their concerts sold out very fast. The production on the single was amazing. Lots of close harmonies as well as great musicianship.
The BBC had a silly rule thst forced artists to rerecord their songs for broadcasting. They wouldn't allow them to mime over the original recording. This is why this sounds quite different to the single/album version.
i remember meeting judy and fell in love with her, then as things happen i met her double (well almost) and ended up going out with her for a while, happy days
I was 16 at the time and was just about to get ready to leave school and head out to the big wide world and start work. Now I'm just a few years away from retirement. How time flies.
Those were the days, real music and people played instruments, not like today where their ain't much to listen to , still sounds great even after all these years real music.
This is the first time I've ever seen this band perform. I always loved the little contrapuntal (fugal?) section in the chorus - very clever whoever wrote it. It stood out amongst all the post-Punk dross. Are the group still playing? Is she still alive. What a wonderful voice she had. A time when we were all young & gay, and had colour in our hair.
Renaissance, such a wonderful song, Now Listen to the band called "YES" and their song "wonderous stories", then listen to the band Jon and Vangelis and the song "I'll find my way home", All these songs from the same era, and perfect smooth songs for listening too, Jon Anderson has a wonderful voice, The 70s 80s and early 90s, Amazing music times, the best music ever.
1st real band i ever saw live Cardiff students union 1979 ,had a bit of a crush on Annie after that!!! 16 year old over hormonal young man, oh the good old days.
I was 114 when this came out. I loved it then and I love it now in 2020. In fact, I'm congratulating myself on having such good taste as a teenager, lol!
Wow Rachel, You have weathered very well. Please tell us your big secret to such Momentous long life .Bless you honey and the lead singer ' Fab .Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🕊
The song of my childhood....we used to go to Caithness on holiday in late August to see the lights.....and this song was always in our hearts and minds..
Is this the episode with the rumoured Punk v Prog collision? Jilted John was on the same show and was swaying along the way Annie does when she sings. She thought he was taking the mick so gave him the finger. He has since said he was just enjoying the music. Quite funny to picture demure ball gowned Annie doing that to the snotty punk.
That’s not true! A piano is only seven octaves! Professional singers generally tend to have a three octave range! Some four. An octave is a full scale so it would be pretty impossible to have an eight octave range. Annie has a great voice but even hers isn’t that great!
EXACTLY! - and yet reggae, punk, glam and gems like this song above all seemed to rub along together in the charts. Why people think the 1970's was a write off for music remains a mystery. It all went downhall after the Madchester scene 1992.
Remember them performing this on a show called Seaside special in the 70s. Amazing voice and beautiful lady and from Bolton too, l would never have thought by her voice Maggie Reilly ( moon light shadow ) was from Glasgow.
A brilliant single when it first came out and still great 44 years on , thats when music was really good , how i miss the seventies.
Music of the seventies and eighties can never be bettered ' after about 1990 or so saw a decline ' and even more in the 21st century.
My goodness! Is it that long ago? I have the single with " opening out on the "B" side and also the full album on cd.
Who knew that TV Presenter Kate Garraway could sing so well? Hidden talents, eh?

Surely she'd give him a proper insult - the good old British V sign? The 'finger' is so wimpy Yank.
Beautiful. Why oh why can't artists of today produce songs of this quality.
I can't believe that they did a concert at my school in '73

Roy Wood is the man she is singing about if I remember correctly. I always wondered if he had a hand in this.
The lights of northern england will guide her back to Roy, thats what it's about, not the aurora.
