    Lyrics
For three days I fought my way along roads packed with refugees, the homeless, burdened with boxes and bundles containing their valuables. All that was of value to me was in London. By the time I reached their little red brick house, Carrie and her father were gone...
The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
    Now you're not here
I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear
I wish that I was flying with them
    Now you're not here
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here
Fire suddenly leapt from house to house, the population panicked and ran and I was swept along with them, aimless and lost without Carrie. Finally I headed eastward for the ocean, and my only hope of survival: A boat out of England...
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life will be forever autumn
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here
As I hastened through Covent Garden, Blackfriars and Billingsgate, more and more people joined the painful exodus. Sad, weary women, their children stumbling and streaked with tears, their men bitter and angry, the rich rubbing shoulder with beggars and outcasts. Dogs snarled and whined, the horses' bits were covered with foam…... and here and there were wounded soldiers, as helpless as the rest. We saw tripods wading up the Thames, cutting through bridges as though they were paper - Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge…... One appeared above Big Ben
    Ulla!
Never before in the history of the world had such a mass of human beings moved and suffered together. This was no disciplined march, it was a stampede, without order and without a goal, six million people, unarmed and unprovisioned, driving headlong. It was the beginning of the rout of civilization, of the massacre of mankind...
A vast crowd buffeted me toward the already packed steamer. I looked up enviously at those safely on board - straight into the eyes of my beloved Carrie! At sight of me she began to fight her way along the packed deck to the gangplank. At that very moment it was raised, and I caught a last glimpse of her despairing face as the crowd swept me away from her...
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here
    Cause you're not here

I am so sorry for your loss, especially as he was so young. I am a 51 year old UK male and I was lucky enough to experience this album when it came out in the laye 70's as a kid. I know it so well, most of the words too. My dad had a high end hifi and headphone setup back then, so I had an amazing experience which stays with me today.

We got her a week after my husband and I married in October of '92 and almost exactly 2 years later she went missing and was found dead a week later. My heart was shattered. She loved playing in the leaves and being out doors,, exploring and all. It's been several years and I still miss my little Surely Bo Birley.

      To all the heartbroken;
We all voluntarily incarnated here on earth, to experience a disconnect, a godless life learning experience... perhaps as a necessary contrast from our previous heavenly existence!
Perhaps try transpose the feeling of this song of; the (temporary) loss we feel here on earth, to; the forgotten belonging/Love/ Homeliness of our previous Home in heaven. Even if you are Atheist,
Look-up NDE experiences & learn what they see beyond the "veil' learn again where we Came from/ & are going back to!, you will see through a new lens!.

So many great songs from that era! Where's all the genius talent gone?

When I was about 20 years old, there was an amazing classic rock radio station in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that had a program on Saturday nights that would begin each show with all 17 minutes of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. That's where I first heard this song. This was a classic rock station, but one that played a lot of deep cuts. Not just the same old tired songs you hear on 99.9% of the classic rock stations we have now. Which is why I don't listen to the radio anymore. It's Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Sweet Home Alabama, Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2, You Shook Me All Night Long, and Stairway To Heaven over and over and over and over and over again. And since when is Blondie classic rock?

I could pick up that station in Starkville, MS in the late 1970's-early '80's. It was staticy, but I could hear it on my AM radio.

I hadn't heard this song since 1980 when my Dad used to play it over and over after my Mom committed suicide. He used to scare me and my sister with the 'machines from Mars' and only seeing the cover artwork now brings back shivers to my spine. It's funny that after all these years, I can still sing along the lyrics, though only now I understand the words 'cause you're not here'. At that time, aged 5, when hearing this song I could only feel an intense loneliness, which has taken me decades to get rid off. My Dad is 77 now, he had a stroke last year but is still there for me, just like he always was throughout all the tough times. I would like to listen this song together with him and cry out all those tears I could not cry when I was too young to understand what had happened.
