Annie also has the best voice production in terms of how well her registers are connected and how consistent her voice sounds at the lower and higher end of her range. Incredible diction too. Again, nothing that makes the voice by itself best for ALL music.
Stop with the nonsense, Annie and the Renassance were ahead of their times, there music , amazingly mesmerizing, had to be heard in person, I saw the Renaissance in my Alma mater, Hunter College in 1976-77, and Annie blew us all away, Ruthie Henshall is in another league , but, let's wait 35 years and see how her voice can hold up! Give Annie and the Renaissance their immortal spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, already!
Príde mi to akoby tým svojim spevom nebola absolútne vžitá do tejto tak prekrásnej piesne. Počula som mnohé ju odspievať, táto medzi tie lepšie, no a najlepšie už vôbec nepatrí.
I don't care whether this was the best performance of 20th century or not. Stumbled upon this video, and it is an unexpected treat. I love the original song and ways loved Annie/Renaissance. What do I need more than this?? Thanks for sharing!
No….Jethro Tull isn’t my real name. Simply the name I chose in 1999 when I went online. Have been using it ever since. Why bother to change a unique name??
Amazed at how many here are talking shit. This sounds great. What she was doing at the beginning was a look of disapproval to the one guitarist in all Black who was fucking around with his floor rig. I believe she thought it unprofessional. Her voice is just great,as is the tune.
Voice is great. Tune, maybe a great one (not for me, but hey that's we all have different tastes). She's not necessarily in tune all the time though. That said, she is not unbearably off tune either and that is rarely the case anyway for her. Could be a case of Mike Olfield fans not feeling too charitable to another singer covering the song.
Renaissance fans will appreciate Annie's vocal style that made them beloved in the 70's and 80's, but pop tunes do not showcase her voice properly.. She has a super voice, classically trained.
Just goes to show that even the very, very best can be thrown off course when let down by other band members.....If Annie had been forewarned that she would be singing the start virtually a cappella, at least she would have been ready for it....The performance picked up once the band got into their stride but, by then the damage was done. She is still my number one though.....
I think that Annie was having monitor problems at the start by the way sh was looking quizzically off to stage left, which is where I presume the monitoe desk was!
That's exactly what I was thinking - she can't hear herself. It's pretty much impossible to stay in tune in that situation, no matter how good a singer you are!
BIG Request for Help: Annie did a cover for the Simon and Garfunkel song, America. I don't think it was on an album, more than likely in a concert. Help!! Where can I find this? Simon and Garfunkel would have loved it. Thanks in advance.
@mallard4998 'Going through the motions' is what I felt listening to this and other clips from this concert. Her usual, chirpy energy is strangely absent here. It is well documented in interviews that the going was tough for her at this time. She was in a dilemma whether to go commercial or stick to her strengths at this time. Ofc, Blessing in Disguise would happen and change everything but the late 80s is the pits of Annie's career.
I saw that show at The Bottom Line and hoping that someone would know if there was a full concert somewhere on u-tube. I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. It was an amazing concert!
Oh, geez. WHY can't I keep my promise to myself, never to read the comments on RUclips. Everyone has an opinion, of course, but some seem to think negativity is the ONLY side of themselves they want to share.
Is very important say that is of Mike Olfield...admiro en demasia a Annie, represento en Renaissance lo q aun no cubria la musica Celta, pero Mike es Mike
She didn't record w/Mike. And the band missed the intro terribly. I think it was Anita Hegerland (his wife of a few years) or possibly Miriam Stockley?
would love to hear a duet with Annie and Maggie Reilly perhaps i someone reading this can persuade Mike Oldfield and Maggie to work this and release it it would be a real hit
Annie Haslam (the singer from the Prog Rock band Renaissance) and her Solo band. two members from her solo band are now official members of Renaissance.
*bump* It may be pertinent to mention here that she was already deaf in one ear by this point. I don't know about this concert, but at this point she was supposed to have also experienced severe pain in the ears. It might explain why not only here but in general, in concerts from the 90s or later, her intonation lacks the precision she possessed in the 70s. Must be a nightmare to sing live, especially very 'clean', melodic material, when you can't hear yourself or the other musicians well.
@mallard4998 She has alluded to how back in the 70s, the band performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Radio City Hall and such but when she started her solo career, she had to perform at much smaller venues and had to promote herself. Not writing her own music didn't help matters.
That look she gave at the beginning was, 'What are ye at'? Instruments started in the wrong key for her and she had to continue but let the guitar player know when she finished.
Annie could have used a bit of support from the soundmen. The echo? The guitar soloist needs some more fingers. No help from the studio could save him.
Right, there are at least three different kinds of female voices as per fach without getting into lighter/heavier voice types. I think what people mean is she is technically the most accomplished singer....at least in rock/pop. I don't know of very many I have heard that I would rate higher. Unfortunately, people tend to club everything related to singing in the word 'voice' but there's no such thing as 'best voice'.
I think the interesting thing about this clip is proof to any aspiring musician that the sum of the parts ( i.e. great musicians ) doesn't naturally mean you get great music all the time. There are probably technical errors with the fold back, but that shouldn't be a problem for a professional/experienced singer. Annie has trouble pitching this song all the way through. Probably the most inexcusable crime is the arrangement. The tempo is probably a bit quick and reinforced by sterile/metronomic drumming with absolutely no feel whatsoever. The result: A truly god awful cover version.
The interesting thing is this line up which is delivering such a pathetic show includes Rave Tesar on keyboard and Mark Lambert (?) on guitar. I don't recognise the bassist, wonder if he too has done other turns for Annie. Drummer is probably Goldberger. In short, an entire line up that's seen far, far better days and can very well put together an inspiring set for the audience. But it's almost like they couldn't be bothered that day.
Keyboard player in this band was Raphael Rudd. I believe he died in a car crash. Was also the piano player in the acoustic Renaissance when they split with Jon Camp. You wouldn't believe how hard he hit the piano on those gigs. He absolutely pulverized it!
It definitely sounds empty and she’s seems to be singing it fast But she’s got a follow The band so it might be their fault. Who am I to say I shouldn’t be criticizing I can’t play
crap recording ,also depends on the sound equipment could be of low quality plus no backing singers make her sound off ,still better than the total crap on these reality tv shows of today.
I’d forgotten this song existed but it seems so familiar when I hear it now. What a beautiful woman and a wonderful singer. ❤
Annie is an awesome lady with an awesome band Love her
What a voice .. brilliant …loved northern lights as well , great memories
Hard to believe this is nearly 30 years old. Annie still has it - a sublime voice and wicked sense of humor. I love her.
That voice! In my mind this is what angels sound like!
I really miss renaissance.. they were ahead of their time.
Love this lady with all my heart.
Wonderful talented singer and artist and good person.
Best wishes Annie!
Never heard this til now. Great song. Despite the negative comments, she carried the song anyway.
No computer generated voices just pure talent
Wao ! I had never imagined Annie with Oldfield !!
Such a lovely lady.
the timbre of her voice...beautiful...❤
love this song sung by annie!
Was there at The Bottom Line. Great concert venue!
❤Very good singer !!!
Annie also has the best voice production in terms of how well her registers are connected and how consistent her voice sounds at the lower and higher end of her range. Incredible diction too. Again, nothing that makes the voice by itself best for ALL music.

“…… their music….”
The lead singer is amazing...incredible voice
SHould have heard her 20 years ago. incomparable. See "Mother Russia" and her other hits.
Absolutely!! I saw her with Renaissance in 1974 & 1978. Incredible lady!!
I remember Annie Haslam - In The Bleak Midwinter.
She's brilliant.
Check out Annie with Steve Howe of Yes and the track Turn of the Century.
Príde mi to akoby tým svojim spevom nebola absolútne vžitá do tejto tak prekrásnej piesne. Počula som mnohé ju odspievať, táto medzi tie lepšie, no a najlepšie už vôbec nepatrí.
From 0:45 to 1:00 Annie looking with anger to the left as if saying "...What are you F&%$ doing..."
Guitarist crouches down just before this, I'm guessing he had a problem with one of his pedals
Minor audio problem, quickly sorted.
I don't care whether this was the best performance of 20th century or not. Stumbled upon this video, and it is an unexpected treat. I love the original song and ways loved Annie/Renaissance. What do I need more than this?? Thanks for sharing!
Wow! A mashup of two of my favorite artists!
Love the side eye at the start. I assume the band screwed up. I think the guitar player heard all about it at 3:40.
This song is from the album "Crises" by Mike Oldfield. I don't think Annie did very many covers
I saw Annie 3 times during the '70's and she was fantastic. Every negative comment regarding this performance is unfortunately justified. :(
Is your name really Jethro Tull? I saw Annie in concert with this band. She and they were GREAT.
No….Jethro Tull isn’t my real name. Simply the name I chose in 1999 when I went online. Have been using it ever since. Why bother to change a unique name??
@@johnwegrecki3361 Good point!
Proof that Mike Oldfield is a great guitarist and Maggie is an amazing singer.
What's "that" supposed to mean exactly??! Talk about your underhanded compliments
She's singing great.. thanks very much for upload :) great tune
This is one of those songs that you just can't not like.
can't wait to see her live ,,,after all these years,,
Amazed at how many here are talking shit. This sounds great. What she was doing at the beginning was a look of disapproval to the one guitarist in all Black who was fucking around with his floor rig. I believe she thought it unprofessional. Her voice is just great,as is the tune.

Fantastic. Perfect. With respect. Pena Gil
懐かしい。アニーハズラムのコンサートでこの曲を聞きました。
Christ I found Annie years ago looking for songs on Limewire.... Love it!!!!
I was there
Renaissance fans will appreciate Annie's vocal style that made them beloved in the 70's and 80's, but pop tunes do not showcase her voice properly.. She has a super voice, classically trained.
Great job by Annie. Miriam Stockley also does a great cover too.
Nomber 1 Maggie!!!!!!!
I'm fanatic fun of Annie Haslam Renaissance .
Just goes to show that even the very, very best can be thrown off course when let down by other band members.....If Annie had been forewarned that she would be singing the start virtually a cappella, at least she would have been ready for it....The performance picked up once the band got into their stride but, by then the damage was done. Perfect.
GREAT!
Mike would be proud
5 Octave voice, gorgeous too.
Saw that look at Tralf November of last year. Same issue.. she couldn't hear herself singing.
el guitarrista( o bajistaq) a su izquierda tira algo antes del intro, quiszas eso la distrajo.
Lindíssimo 😍
Ouch ! This has to be the one & only time that I've seen Annie Haslam off key - I've seen her live many times, but this is painful.
If looks could kill (at the beginning)!!
This is missing one vital ingredient. Mike Oldfield himself.
+Leigh Brown And Maggie Reilly.
Dead right, Maggie Reilly's voice is the best
Nicely put
years gone by - but never forgetting annie ...
Ella, Fantástica!
Respect to her...but Maggie's voice is unique!
BIG Request for Help: Annie did a cover for the Simon and Garfunkel song, America. I don't think it was on an album, more than likely in a concert. Help!! Where can I find this? Simon and Garfunkel would have loved it. Thanks in advance.
voz angelical
EN VERDAD ME ENCANTA TU FORMA DE CANTAR ERES LINDA DANDO UN POCO DE PAZ A MI CORAZON :)
Sehr schön

The key to sucess is to be just the right amount of time ahead of your time otherwise the followers cant keep up and they lose your direction.
Oh, geez. WHY can't I keep my promise to myself, never to read the comments on RUclips. Everyone has an opinion, of course, but some seem to think negativity is the ONLY side of themselves they want to share.
+Bill Melton Stop being so negative Bill. Take no notice of the detractors.
So...every opinion different that yours is negative?
Opinions are like arseholes everyone has one.
I agreen with all of you, it is certainly missing something. Tony Robson
I love this song, and I love Renaissance. But this isn't the best example of either.
Yes
Hogy a gránátba' bírt ilyen hamisan énekelni végig? Ez szánalmas! Az X factor selejtezőjéből jobbakat hajtanak el!
Annie is a superlative singer but she must have had monitoring issues here.
What year is this? Released first 1983?
She sing !!!!!!!!
Is very important say that is of Mike Olfield...admiro en demasia a Annie, represento en Renaissance lo q aun no cubria la musica Celta, pero Mike es Mike
It looked like Annie was wondering if the band was playing the same song as she was singing.
She didn't record w/Mike. And the band missed the intro terribly. I think it was Anita Hegerland (his wife of a few years) or possibly Miriam Stockley?
Maggie Reilly recorded the single with Mike Oldfield
All three. both are right. Maggie first, then Miriam, then Anita.
better music then other singer..are y agree?
would love to hear a duet with Annie and Maggie Reilly perhaps i someone reading this can persuade Mike Oldfield and Maggie to work this and release it it would be a real hit
@ProfessorZaroff No but she has a voice similar to Maddy Prior's, who sings on some tunes by Oldfield (mainly on 'Incantations').
Written by Mike Oldfield. Who is the backup band, anyone?
Annie Haslam (the singer from the Prog Rock band Renaissance) and her Solo band. two members from her solo band are now official members of Renaissance.
Okay, this wasn't her best night, but her studio rendition of the song is pretty damn good.
I think Maggie Reilly covered this too ....
*bump* It may be pertinent to mention here that she was already deaf in one ear by this point. Must be a nightmare to sing live, especially very 'clean', melodic material, when you can't hear yourself or the other musicians well.
Thats why they have voice enhancing software my friend and effects in the recording studio
A good tune strangled!!!
She needs another crack at it with some proper backing and a far better electric guitar solo... Wonder if she ever did a Studio version .
@mallard4998 She has alluded to how back in the 70s, the band performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Radio City Hall and such but when she started her solo career, she had to perform at much smaller venues and had to promote herself. Not writing her own music didn't help matters.

You're right, but I think her version is excellent and very different and she's singing good here..
Is she before sally oldfield or after.?
A little faster than I remember.
I think though at about 1.25 of the vid that she became a bit more comfortable and got into it more..she saved it,in my opinion.
Oh dear!
Annie could have used a bit of support from the soundmen. The echo?
The guitar soloist needs some more fingers. No help from the studio could save him.

It is hard to listen without comparing to Maggie Reilly. Rather not comment...
Thank you. You are a kind sort.
They both made their songs their own. Love em both
Annie is PITCH PERFECT but she sang some bum notes as her monitors werent right the MUPPET on sound desk was a MUPPET!!!
What year is this?
+Davin Dx , 1990. Terrible presentation...
Fred mercury
she is murdering this song.out of key big time.
GREAT DRUMMING BY JOE GOLDBERGER!
Thank you Steven!
Yes. I saw him with this band and he was excellent. Pulverized his tom tom during Ashes Are Burning during the guitar solo jam.
Roy Wood 1973 Boulders
I wouldn't want to be her guitarist afterwards, I think it was him she was giving evils...
Re GnosisMan50 . . . .Just a random thought . . . . .but does Simon Cowell know this career definig stuff ? . . . .
Canta horrores, voz feminina mais linda que ouvi em minha vida toda!
Conheça os discos da banda,Renaissance onde ela é a vocalista é seu trabalho com Steve Howe, guitarrista do Ter!!
