Playing with Pokéballs on, toggled to the maximum quantity was always the most fun way to play as a kid with my brother and cousins. So fun and chaotic. Porygon was definitely the best one lol.
I also used to do that in both N64 Smash and Melee! When I was bored by myself, I used to play a team match as Pikachu (my favorite character) with two other Pikachus as teammates with 99 stocks vs a single Jigglypuff CPU on level 1 on the Mushroom Kingdom stage with Pokéballs as the only item on at maximum spawn rate. (I used to really dislike Jigglypuff back then lol!) The whole chaotic match lasted like an hour and I racked up a lot of vs mode play time which also unlocked other stuff in the game. Good times. 😊
The developers decided this mechanic After a brawl in the office, with 5 people injured and 1 dead. After this accident, they wanted to finish developing the game as fast as they could, that's how melee was born and that's why we have Roy and Game & Watch ad low tiers. You have to believe what I Just wrote
more casual-focused melee videos are genuinely a great idea, the content around the game is so hyperfocused on the competitive aspect (for good reasons), so i think ppl forget abt the amount of variety this game had to offer
As someone who played it casually a lot (and there are many of us!) this popped up in my feed and I’d never watched the channel before, so yeah it works
I swear I once heard as a kid that Goldeen could rarely use Horn Drill for a one-hit KO. I never saw it but that's always my first thought whenever Goldeen is summoned.
I don't know what it was about Melee but there were TONS of playground rumors like that for this game. Especially online. Can't tell you how many fake characters or weird non-consequential rumors I saw on the net back in the day.
I heard that Goldeen in Brawl would use Imprison if it entered water and freeze (disable controls, not literally freeze) everyone else on stage. Imagine my disappointment when I finally pulled it off...
I feel like that's what the description for its trophy where mentioned Horn drill but, yeah I do remember seeing that info probably from the trophy description I mentioned. It's been 2 years since I've been on Melee
As a kid, I could have sworn this was the case. It came out, I heard the critical hit sound, and I flew off the stage. I told everyone about it because I was so excited to find it out. Looking back on it, I was probably hit with Ness’s bat or a Jigglypuff Rest, but six-year-old me didn’t realize it.
even the easiest to dodge pokemon are still useful, taking options away from your opponent is always good. if you play a character with a strong aerial the next time you get something like marill as soon as its about to hit them jump and do the strong aerial, they either jump into it to avoid the marill, shield to block the marill and wont be able to punish you or they just get hit by the marill and obviously cant punish and you can try to combo off that.
It’s like what Alpharad said when he ranked all of Ultimate’s Pokémon, more specifically Abomasnow: The fact that you can avoid it doesn’t make it bad, the fact that you HAVE to avoid it makes it good.
I've been playing Melee since late 2004. With that, I've gotten somewhat attached to the dozens of Poké Ball Pokémon. Porygon2 isn't who I'd consider the strongest Pokémon in SSBM, but he comes terrifyingly close. Getting hit by him does a tremendous amount of knockback! I'd slot Lugia as the strongest one; getting hit while he's onstage does crazy knockback, and the ensuing Aeroblast move does even more damage, combos around, and inevitably KOs anyone. Incidentally, my favorite Poké Ball Pokémon here is Zapdos. His Thundershock technique won't KO anyone, but taking up to 81% damage isn't so shabby! What's more, Zapdos himself looks nice in 3D with his paper-thin wings. Nice video!
I'm glad I clicked on this video, very high quality and I appreciate that you don't go overboard with the "meme" style editing that a lot of other channels do.
1:42 Based for remembering Bonus Mode exists. I wish there was more love for stuff like Bonus Mode, Coin Mode, Stamina Mode & Single Button Mode, but those first two especially. Anyway, very interesting analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
in every smash game, having pokeballs (and assist trophies by extension), is always a blast. It changes the game up in a radically different way, where now you have an extra threat to work around in creative ways. I think Ultimate has the best balance of pokemon. Each one does great damage, but there attacks are limited in just such a way that they can be dodged if you know what you're doing.
I always felt Ho-Oh and Lugia were the two best Pokémon in Melee (along with Raikou), because of their huge hitboxes and insane KO potential, either during the move or afterwards. And if I had to pick a single best Pokémon, it would be Lugia definitely.
This video was recommended to me and I liked it so much that I checked out some of your other content and it was also great! I really encourage you to keep making videos :) always amazing to see new channels making melee content like this! also, and im just assuming based on the captions in your last video, if this is your first time recording lines for a video, you did a really good job with them!
I actually went into this video expecting to disagree with a bunch of the choices thinking they would be pretty biased or misplaced verdicts, but I literally agree with every placement on here bro. We all know how oppinionated and toxic some of us in the smash community are, so it is not only a surprise that I agree, but like, almost all the other commenters do too. Seriously a miracle lol
This was really fun, although I think you're undervaluing Suicune. Taking up enormous parts of the stage is incredibly good in any context. It's nice to see people making videos about this game that aren't yet another TAS frame-by-frame analysis of some pro players chaingrabbing each other.
Scizor is my favorite Pokémon of all time due to him being in melee when I was a kid and loved it when he got stocks. Happy to see him really high up, solid tier list as well.
back in the day my friends and i would occasionally play with items on just to spice things up and it was always a good time. i remember a lot of Bellossom and Scizor
As someone who regularly play with items and advanced tech on a moderately high level I'd definately rank scizor at least top 5 as I'm pretty sure it does follow the opponent and kills more often than not if it hits. Also I'd put venasaur at top 3 that thing is a menace as it does also hit on platforms above it granting instant stage controll for the owner. That being said, amazing video and topic, very well put together. I also loved the examples you showed while talking about certain scenarios. Thanks for making this!
Something i love about pokemon specifically as an item is stage control. Even if it wont hit, it will change where your opponent can go and you call them out for it. Like how reflectors arent used loads, partly because the opponent uses less projectiles to avoid them but that weakens their character overall. Its just something i find interesting
Great video, but I have some notes on your tierlist: - You mention that knowing how to di makes some pokemon better or worse (weezing). I think this tiertlist is decided for the casual audience? A 'competitive' pokemon tier list (meaning, people who actually know how to di and such) could be different. - Character usage in casual is probably more diverse than competitive, which probably means that there are less spacies and more floaties (a lot of kirby for example). This changes some of the power of the pokemon since the combo potential is less. - Also I think this list is based on 1v1? Playing with 4 people can also affect the power of certain pokemon. - I assume that in your testing you had a bias for playing on certain stages. I see the legal stages a lot, and not many 'big stages' (fourside, hyrule). Pokemon that follow the opponent will be stronger in bigger stages I think. - As mentioned by other commenters, I think you underestimate the power of NEEDING to dodge a pokemon, otherwise you would get hit by the opponent.Taklng optionsaway is strong. - also where are pichu, Pikachu, jigglypuff and mewtwo ;)
Playing with my brother the other day we were both on last stock and he threw a ball at me. Caught it and threw it back knocking him off the ledge but the ball fell on the stage. Scissor got him on the ledge grab attempt
I think Scizor is the best. If you're playing on a tournament legal stage I could see Porygon 2 being the best, but Scizor is fast, unpredictable, and has great kill potential. He has more kill potential than the legendaries, and is more difficult to avoid. Maybe I'm just too used to playing on Temple tho.
Aaa nostalgic I love the Pokémons in Melee. Now either my memory don´t serve me well or there is a difficulty diffrence between regions becuse I remember Moltres sure dose a lot of damage but I am sure I have been above it but not knocked out that often, mostly hit up and to either direction still able to recover. Same with a lot of things here, it seemed like your game it is easier to get knocked away. Porygon 2 I remember fearly easy to recover from and not that strong as you showed it here. So now I am curious. I have to boot up my old console and give it a go.
Who else got to 3:50 and got flashbacks to someone sending out a togepi and everyone simultaneously crying out, "Not the dark attack!"? It's even worse when you're playing single-player mode because CPU opponents don't navigate the maps by sight, so they aren't affected at all. Also, funny you should mention snorlax as the quintessential pokéball pokémon in Melee, if I remember correctly, it actually was the first pokémon I ever saw come out of a pokéball when playing Melee.
Hey just wanted to point out something you missed. AFTER Porygon 2's Tackle, if you're within the radius of the dimension door that it leaves through, it will take you into the alternate dimension and you will immediately die. It's extremely rare that this will ever happen due to the person you're fighting being on the opposite side of the map, but I've been in 4-player matches where a 3rd player knocked a 4th player into the Porygon 2's dimension door, which is how I know this. Otherwise, great video. PS: it may take a few attempts to replicate as you'll need to avoid Porygon 2's hitbox while attempting to execute this.
Personally I think you down play the easy to avoid Pokémon. Those Pokémon essentially cut off a portion of the stage for the opponent which can be useful for A. Getting more pokemon. B. Charge Specials like Samus' Charge Blast or C. Stall.
Throwing electrode is something my friend told me when I was 12. I then proceeded to die to every electrode that I saw when we played together. It was after months (and me finally giving up) that he revealed the secret (by killing me with it ofc): you can only pick it up near the end of the animation :^)
I haven't thrown a melee pokeball in a decade, but I still knew what was in the final slot by process of elimination. Will melees grip eternally hold its grasp over me?
Great video, am I the only one noticing you sound alarmingly similar to competitive pokemon youtuber BKC? I go to bed to that guy's vids all the time and when this autoplayed I thought it was him talking about melee
Link and Young Link's passive shields protect them from Blastoise's Hydro Pumps, Staryu's Swift and Chikorita's Razor Leaves (they have to be crouching to protect themselves from the latter).
Pokemon and items in general become relevant competitively in the Iron Man format. At least the one I would see Mang0 and Axe play on for awhile. Always fun watching pros destroy each other with their non mains and playing on banned stages and using items along with their tech skills they’ve developed for many years.
i remember seeing a video of someone throwing a poke ball and it was goldeen, it flopped into termina bay and started going crazy! it was definitely a mod but i thought it was cool
Me and my brother would literally have pokemon battles by picking a side of the stage and whoever was on the side it lands on could use it ...until we got bored and went by whoever gets it first rules the stage
The Poké Ball is my favorite item. I understand that competitive players want to make the game more fair, but let's face it, nothing beats unleashing an army of Pokemon onto your opponent.

Eveyone who didn't do this as a kid is a freaking loser.
Melee 99 lives super sudden death mode 4 players small stage high item frequency poke balls only
I always liked to play Super Sudden Death with Bob-Ombs set to High. Self destructs were...frequent.
A game mode I liked playing with a friend was super sudden death mode and max items with only red shells...nowhere is safe.
One thing to add to Clefairy's selfdestruct is that it doesn't hurt the person that got Clefariy.
How did I not notice that? Thanks!

Pokemon and items in general become relevant competitively in the Iron Man format. At least the one I would see Mang0 and Axe play on for awhile. Always fun watching pros destroy each other with their non mains and playing on banned stages and using items along with their tech skills they’ve developed for many years.
would love to pokemon rankings for the other smashes
i remember seeing a video of someone throwing a poke ball and it was goldeen, it flopped into termina bay and started going crazy! it was definitely a mod but i thought it was cool
Loved this video!
Cool list
Cool comment
i hope to see a future video like this for ultimate
My boy comes out on top. Praise be to Porygon2
Me and my brother would literally have pokemon battles by picking a side of the stage and whoever was on the side it lands on could use it
...until we got bored and went by whoever gets it first rules the stage
The Poké Ball is my favorite item. I understand that competitive players want to make the game more fair, but let's face it, nothing beats unleashing an army of Pokemon onto your opponent.
