Not the modern CryEngine, but CryEngine 2? Yes - we see the same thing for Far Cry’s Dunia engine which was based on CryEngine 2 and those games are also very single threaded. But Digital Foundry has talked a lot about more modern CryEngine games like Crysis 3 or Hunt Showdown which do scale with core/thread count very well (an impressive feat considering they’re DX11 games). CryEngine 5 =/= CryEngine 3 =/= CryEngine 2. The issue with the remaster is they’re working from a code base that is very old and was only designed to run on dual core CPUs. Well, they didnt want to put any serious work into this. Game is still DX11, so no wonder its basically 3 threads and pretty high GPU overhead. DX12 is a must for crysis with maximized MT but that requires rewriting lot of code and we cannot have that.
@@jetthejudge It's just how the original game was designed unfortunately. Crytek thought that single core CPUs would become more powerful, when in reality PCs and consoles have gone for adding multiple cores instead. It would need an entire remake most likely.

We just need a straight up remake. Crysis makes modern PCs (and the new consoles) seem weak due to old legacy code and not taking advantage of the high parallelization processing of modern CPUs. Honestly the best version of Crysis is the original PC version with a HD texture pack. This remaster is a downgrade in many ways.
@@gluedtogames It's not so much an issue of what was available at the time of release - Crysis was built for what the developers thought the future would be like. The current consoles run on what is basically a 2700x. Don't get me wrong, I think that's great and the 2700x is a wonderful CPU - but it's not very strong in single threaded performance. To the point that Alex proclaims it runs better on PS5 yet what we see appears to run at a lesser resolution and John saying something about GPU dips on Series X, yet ps5 in quality drops into the LOW 40s consistently. We never see that in the Xbox video.
They also said that if you have vrr on series X it plays very, very good on quality mode.. So you have this option, the frame rate is better then ps5 easely.

I always disable motion blur when possible. It looks nice when implemented correctly but often it is overdone making moving objects stand out way too much instead of this effect being there to help bring back impression of motion that was lost when games started targeting 30fps (from PS2's typical 60fps). I liked motion blur in Plague Tale Innocense. It was done pretty well in this game. Original Crysis had motion blur that would be passable if more effort was put in to it to make it more subtle and even higher quality... and not less quality like in the remastered edition which like you said looks broken, is broken and needs to be disabled.
What they should have done : XSX / PS5 : Modes 1. RT Quality - 1800p w/ ray tracing targeting a stable 30fps 2. RT Performance - 1080p or even 900p w/ ray tracing and more aggressive DRS targeting a stable 60fps 3. Perfomance - kinda acceptable as is w/ 1080p targeting 60fps XSS : Modes 1. Quality - lower res to 1800p or even 1440p with more aggressive DRS targeting stable 30fps 2. RT Mode : good as is 3. Performance - 900p with more aggressive DRS (even if lower bounds needs to drop to to 540p etc in order to keep more stable 60fps)
30fps? For the love of God not in crysis. Quality mode: The XSX should be dynamic 1800p The PS5 should be dynamic 1440p RT mode: The XSX should be locked 1080p The PS5 should be locked 1080p Performance mode: Leave as it is on XSX and PS5. Not sure about the XSS. More importantly than all this though is to fix the incorrect scaling on PS5, it makes the game look so blurry. This is what led to the downfall of Crytek, and why very few devs actually use the CryEngine. Instead of putting resources and improving the multi-threaded performance of the engine. Crytek put their money on hardware agnostic RT which nobody cares about. It's like they were hell-bent on re-inventing the wheel. Improving the multi-threaded performance and implementing low level APIs in the engine like DX12 and Vulkan would have helped a lot. In fact, DX12 and Vulkan comes with their own RT extensions, so RT support for the engine would have been inevitable, if they went for low level APIs. Low level APIs also allow for better CPU core/thread utilization, so that's that.
You have no idea what you're talking about. From the last 9 years only this cryengine game is unoptimised because this was based on ps3/360 console ports of Crysis which itself ran poorly because it was not built ground up for consoles but just a port. If you look at Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 they push the fidelity very high on ps3 and looks much better than Crysis 1. Then look at Crysis 3 on pc, Ryse Son of Rome, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Prey 2017 and Crytek's own Hunt: Showdown all of them run excellent becuase they were made on newer versions of Cryengine. Just because this one particular game does not run well doesn't mean Crytek is incompetent or having a downfall. You are a pretentious and an ignorant moron spreading misinformation because Hunt: Showdown was a hit according to Crytek themselves so no they are far from having a downfall.
Even Homefront The Revolution was patched and runs excellent on all platforms it is on. It originally ran poorly not because of cryengine but because it was rushed as it also had plenty of bugs and glitches so another game to disprove your stupid comment.
@@Dev-nr4dw and when did I say that CryEngine is very bad and people should not use it?? All I said that Crytek invested their money and resources on the wrong stuff when they should right now only focus on low level APIs and better resource optimizations. Out of the three publicly available game engines, that is UE4, Unity and CryEngine, the adoption of CryEngine is still way less than the other 2 engines. And that speaks a lot. Sure, CryEngine has it's own fair share of good games like Hunt, Ryse SOR, Prey 2017 and KCD (which I personally loved playing), the list is still shorter compared to the other 2 engines. I have nothing against Crytek or CryEngine, but they clearly have more work to be done on their engine compared to their competition. Also just because Hunt: Showdown is a success doesn't mean that Crytek are good developers, or they are not going through a downfall right now. In recent years, they've closed many studious and many employees where even laid off. Some didn't even get their salary on the due date. It's great on Series X but it needs more optimisation with physics to match latest PC build. No reason at all why no volumetric clouds on the level they put back in and why we can't have individual fence posts break when you shoot them. That looks rather silly at the moment. I didn't notice AI issues on Series X though. I just run through that stage where the snipers were in the gully anyway. I found a great way to beat them is to run to the end , turn slightly right and run as far as you can. Then turn and lob grenades at them when they come into view. 2 to 3 grenades takes out the entire pursuing party and then you are on your way :)

This whole crysis remastered thing just strikes me as something that will never not be disappointing until someone rebuilds fundamental parts of it for the newer versions of the cryengine
Which is weird, you would think they would of done that, like rebuild the game from scratch on the newest engine, it probably wouldnt be that difficult because they could reuse a lot of the original.
It would be a LOT of work properly making all materials PBR, implement all visual effects with the new code and getting the same (or improved) look, and making all code massively multithreaded.

Honestly the best version of Crysis is the original PC version with a HD texture pack. This remaster is a downgrade in many ways.
Wouldn't it be pretty cheap to buy legacy hardware that's considered "powerful" for the architecture it was built for? Why aren't we seeing that?
@@gluedtogames It's not so much an issue of what was available at the time of release - Crysis was built for what the developers thought the future would be like. The current consoles run on what is basically a 2700x. Don't get me wrong, I think that's great and the 2700x is a wonderful CPU - but it's not very strong in single threaded performance. 2020 Crysis Remastered: A game (or engine) so poorly optimised that it makes next generation hardware struggle to run what is effectively over a decade old (and is kind of showing its age).
What they should have done :
XSX / PS5 :
Modes
1. RT Quality - 1800p w/ ray tracing targeting a stable 30fps
2. RT Performance - 1080p or even 900p w/ ray tracing and more aggressive DRS targeting a stable 60fps
3. Perfomance - kinda acceptable as is w/ 1080p targeting 60fps
XSS :
Modes
1. Quality - lower res to 1800p or even 1440p with more aggressive DRS targeting stable 30fps
2. RT Mode : good as is
3. Performance - 900p with more aggressive DRS (even if lower bounds needs to drop to to 540p etc in order to keep more stable 60fps)
30fps? For the love of God not in crysis.
Quality mode:
The XSX should be dynamic 1800p
The PS5 should be dynamic 1440p
RT mode:
The XSX should be locked 1080p
The PS5 should be locked 1080p
Performance mode:
Leave as it is on XSX and PS5.

If talking about the hard truth makes me a pretentious, ignorant moron, then yes I am, at least I'm not you who doesn't know how to be respectful in a simple discussion. Guess you just insult everyone, just to prove your pointless argument and feel good about it.
Great win for the Series X!!

We may get vrr and 1080p super sampling by 2024
Imagine a game I had in 2008 still being relevant
Another XSX win easily. Much higher res and higher frame rates. Interesting how DF are much less hesitant to point out the differences or make such a big deal of it when XSX is performing better then ps5. If the XSX dropped 1 frame difference as an example the Tony Hawk comparison they spend 5 minutes talking about it and making a big deal of it.
C'est de la retro.. pas 1 vrais portage lisez la description
He said at the end that the ps5 has higher frame rates but the Xbox has higher rez... stop being a fukn dumb arse fan boi
lol that was funny though and they said it was while standing against a wall. It was more they were trying to work out why it was dropping but in reality they said both versions were excellent with PS5 having a slightly smoother framerate was all. It wasn't like they said NAh nah series X owners suck :) . The only people to suck in that scenario is Activision because i bought the game on Xbox one X on Disc and i can't upgrade and would have to buy it again. It makes zero sense when you can upgrade from PS4 disc but not Xbox disc.
8:35 Lmao 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Huge dip there
Didn’t see that on the XSX. The Sony lot cling to all possible excuses.
I'm glad every mode targets 60fps. It means that a potential PS5 Pro or PS6 will, in the future, be able to do 60 out of the box.
I don't think so tbh. I still think they will f us over and give us games at 30FPS still. I mean just look at RDR2. Came out late 2019 during the lifespan of PS4 Pro and XOX but it never gave us the option for performance or fidelity. It was clearly capable of running the game at 60 FPS at 1080p at least.....
@@mgf909 I’m not sure the PS4pro/Xbox One X could handle RDR2 1080/60fps. With the amount of information on screen and how demanding that game is, I think it’s impressive they can handle the game like they do. Now PS5/Series X can definitely handle the inevitable RDR2 Remaster 60fps (hopefully 1440p)
Perfect need a console from 2027 to run a remaster of a game from 20 years prior at 60fps
But its lower res than the xbox series x
@@MichaelM28 generally...
Why not vs Xbox Series X? Aaah okay it's because on Xbox it runs at 4k and Playstaydon't
Much less exasperated sighing in this one. Lol.
@Steps That's because this DF dude is a PS fanboy. And you're right, it runs much better on Series X, as is proven in these videos.
@Steps @adamaj If you guys are over 10 years old, you might want to look at what you are doing with your lives.
@Steps Yeah, that sounds about right for someone who fanboy wars about video games.
I wonder how long Alex takes to speed run Crysis and if he does it blindfolded.
you can hear Alex's hype in his voice :D
(next gen Crysis remaster :D)
Omg still remember back then when i sold my kidney just to play this game in high settings.. Memories :')
Has anyone else noticed how their tones change when they’re talking about the PS5?
In what way ?
@@AngryChineseWoman more excitement and optimism than the series x version
Well PS5 is a cool console.
You guys are looking for Boogie Men is the strangest places...
You guys are damn near paranoid
I have an annoying bug in the 2nd mission where I cannot progress because Psycho and Prophet decide to run away from the objective that we're supposed to be securing. Input latency is a bit better but it's still not ideal sadly.
I played this game at 480p24fps back in the day.
Even after all these years this game still looks amazing.
Series X is the greatest console ever!
😂
Its great, sure, but not ever because after SX it will be another, much better.
@@ryutenmen Ever just means as of now :)
@@DEVILTAZ35 lol, "ever" means "always, for ever, at all times, relentlessly, eternally, evermore, unceasingly, to the end of time, everlastingly" etc, therefore including the future.
This game will never take advantage of next-gen hardware until we get a true remaster. See you guys in a couple of years.
Wow I can't believe that we are still using Crysis as a benchmark.
Great upload guys. 20fps on PS5 😯. Crysis is a beast.
*Crysis is trash
@@LuisSR01 I don’t know PS5 is kind of struggling
Crysis remastered is unoptimized trash that doesn't take advantage of more than one CPU thread. Even if you had a Geforce 3090 you would still see dips under 60. The original Crysis on PC in many ways looks better than the remastered version. Maybe you weren't a big gamer when the original came out but that was when single core performance was king and Crytek gambled that it would always be that way. Of course CPUs took a different direction.
@@PatsHungryGaming Even PCs with the RTX 3080 are struggling
@@PatsHungryGaming Demon's Souls, Spiderman, Hitman 3, Control run at perfect 60fps and this trash doesn't? You really can't figure out why?
Is this a new monthly feature? 😂
Love to see a comparison between MotorStorm and and actual racing game from DF
@digitalfoundry you can shut off motion blur i Have found on PS5 it improves performance and visually helps
But can you play PS5 on crysis?
This game has been reviewed and remastered to death.
Why there is no direct comparison to Xbox Series X|S with frame-rate?
Damage control.
@@officialwattzmusic Where do you see „damage control”? That was just a simple question.
@CYB3R2K30 Maybe, but still would be okay to see direct comparison between PS5 and XSX|S, like with other games.
Because they’ll probably do another video for that.
when I saw drops to 40+fps and that single 20fps at 8:36, I don't think it's necessary.
Why is youtube showing the game as Halo Infinite?
nearly a decade of a console and we are still getting 1080p, and looking at old gen graphics smh
Blame the game, the engine it uses is horrible, there’s a reason why very few use it.
Well the game is very poorly optimised.
@@theryan519 Its not the engine in this case, it is this game in particular. It's a poor remaster.
imagine judging a next gen console which is running a poorly optimized game which is NOT even running natively.
Failed to mention the 20 FPS at time 8:36.
That's because how checkpoints work in the game. Sadly it will hitch there no matter what hardware you throw at it.
Crysis looks dated af! At the time it was an Incredible looking albeit it wasn't the most memorable shooter but compared to today's modern shooters this doesn't look good.
HDR destroys picture quality, there is something wrong with it
switch it off and the picture quality goes up
That’s really debatable tbh! It looks phenomenal on my C3 and G4.. have you got good HDR settings on your console/pc? I’d recommend calibrating HDR if not done 👍🏼
Alex sounds happy 😃
He's bashing PS5 of course he's happy

Feel bad for people with ps5 and vrr screens. Ps5 doesn't have vrr yet from what I heard. VRR is needed for next gen
They working on it.
Surprise, surprise. It's beginning to pan out, just as people expected. PS5 is not nearly as powerful as XSX.
Glad I never got one due to the shortages... I'll just wait for a PS5 Pro instead!
This game is optimised like shit. Crash Bandicoot 4 says hello.
@@untamedronin8339 If Crash 4 was released this week it would run better on XSX. That's all it has taken, a couple of months of experience. Any game released from now on, 99%, will run best on XSX. That's why I said in my OP 'just as people expected'.
@@fcukugimmeausername there we go again😂 Crash 4 was released 2 weeks ago, and if the performance could've been improved, they would've patched it on XSX. But it hasn't and it won't.
@@untamedronin8339 That's all it's taken though. Two weeks. We all knew XSX would take the performance crown during 2021 and it looks like it's already happening.
I can't believe that, DF still has done a Switch Breakdown for Plants vs Zombies Battle For Neighborville
There's dip in performance mode on ps5, I bet the sony fanboys will ignore this as well as the fact that the xbox version is way better
None version is good. Dont be delusional.
