One thing I would like to add is don't go into the raft head-first. That is a serious strike, and dangerous. Even though it's in a pool setting, you can still break your neck.

1967 ...San Diego...instructions, drop from the platform, swim any style, time unlimited to the end of pool and back AND get out of the pool...getting out of the pool was the most physical demanding thing I had to do in boot camp. Hanging onto the edge of the pool, I was having a hard time getting out.
A Chief wandered over, " You have to get out of the pool on your own. Take a deep breath, drop to the bottom of the pool, shove off the bottom...bob up, roll onto the edge/deck."
Those drill instructors are not there to fail you, they are there to train you.

I remember when I was there we had a guy in our division who was the fastest runner in the division, like the first PFA his run was 8 minutes, which was insane and unfortunately he ended up getting set back a week because he couldn't pass the swim test and he was probably the best recruit up until that point, he past all his inspections and was like the star in PT everyday.

I easily passed the initial swim test. However, the underwater portion of the Navy Aircrewman swim test gave me fits since I am naturally quite buoyant. I did pass it but, I still hate being underwater. Getting tipped over in the pool helicopter mockup also sucked. Still, I learned things that could have saved my life if I had been unlucky enough to crash in the ocean while flying in a chopper.

Interesting that this video shows them training in a large pool someone I know personally was literally pushed into the ocean from a Navy ship like 35 yrs ago as part of his training dude used to cry on the phone with Big Mama on a regular basis during his basic training but it helped mold him into the man that he is today

For the swim test we did in boot camp (San Diego 1974), all we did was to step off the platform and tread water for 5 minutes. That was the extent of the company swim test in boot camp.

Dang man I graduated navy bootcamp September 1 2023. The only part of the swim test I struggled with was the float. For some reason I could swim my ass off but that float made me look like a complete failure. I did eventually pass it after about two days of training but dang I don’t understand why I struggled with that part so bad💀😭😭

    10ft is nothing...
On my first Med, we jumped off the 0-4 level during swim call...
Only a couple made the jump before they put a stop to it
Which was porbably a good idea because you hit the water pretty hard and you go pretty deep

You should know how to swim, or at the very least feel somewhat comfortable in the water , open ocean water not a warm pool. I can see the Navy getting slack on the qualification. Can you imagine if you actually had to go in the water out in the fleet and you have a bunch of screamers panicking . Not good make sure you can swim and have practiced in a local lake or even a pond.

To be fair, when I went through it I wasn’t the strongest swimmer. It took me 2 tries before I passed the initial swim and moved on to prone and abandoned ship. There are many people that come from urban areas that have never been in a pool. The biggest thing that they motivated us with was the fact that this shouldn’t be a tool of fear, but survival, as if you find yourself in a survival at sea scenario, something has went completely wrong. You swim to survive, not cuz it’s fun. USS Indianapolis is the name of the building the pool is located. I’d suggest you Look into it.
