Perhaps the best thing about this is that since the NES Mini can't connect to the Internet, you never have to worry about Nintendo sealing up this hack via a firmware update!

+Adrien That means that the early versions of the NES Classic Edition will be hard as heck to find if the newer batch systems are unhackable meaning no miniUSB to power on the system anymore. That means that the only way to find the hackable version is through scalpers.

SNES mini will require an always on internet connection, and you have to input a 25 digit key to play the games.
@mr42ndstblvd That would cost them extra money. Usually they only do those sneaky patches with disc games because disc memory is cheap.
So i just tried this and it works very nicely and super easy. I ran to downloaded little Samson as ill never own it. Sure enough that and both the metal gears worked just fine. Thanks for sharing this.

Just done this, I can confirm it does work, Right now i have 67 games on the NES Mini, I can even play super Mario 2 Japan a disk system game!. Amazing :)

I rather hack and pick all the games I want than to have Nintendo pick it all for me. The 30 games they had in there are good enough, just be glad you could add 60 more to this.

If they added more games, I think they could have done missing games like the rest of the Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania games that they left off the system.
They might have had to pay developers to license those games.

I tried to hack mine the other day and wasn't so successful. The software kept saying everything went good but the system never actually loaded the games. Any ideas?

try a different usb cable to load the program to hack it then use the cable that came with the NES when installing the games to load the games .. you picked in the program ..it will work ..
I have found that if I go much over 85 total games the system doesn't have enough memory to boot the games anymore (This is also subject to which games you choose based on their size). Your probably maxing out the system memory is all.
Damn now I really do need a NES Classic.

The best part is Nintendo can't stop this exploit now, even if they cease and desist the link above, those who had the file downloaded will spread it like wildfire via torrent and other website.
I managed to snag an NES Classic yesterday (it was 1 of 2 that was available in the whole city that I live in) and followed the instructions on this video. Thanks so much for this video, Shawn! Now I will conquer Mike Tyson's Punch Out by beating the man himself, and not Mr. Dream! ;)

just a heads up, I done some of this myself with some roms of my choosing and I've come across some that just don't seem to WORK or just flat out glitched up...dunno why but just thought I'd help out

Should have used protection brutha and you could have avoided picking up a nasty virus. Just make sure dirty warez sites can't release their jizz into your computer.

works. thanks! Note: dont try to add 109 games at once you will get c8 error. if c8, just uncheck all but 30 test each and should be fine.. then add 5 at a time. i only added 35. left some save room. still good to know i can cycle out. thanks brohaas.

They knew it would happen as they embedded a secret message so I wouldn't doubt it. Now if we can get a bigger eprom or flash drive hack that'd be awesome. I love the front end.

I just did this mod last night. I took me a while to get my computer to get past the virus thing, and dump the kernel as my computer didn't have a way of installing it without some sort of app to install a driver first, but finally I deleted the original 30 games and added 96 total. Only 2 games I tried to place on the mini gave me any issues. Micro machines, and Nintendo world championships. it said the mini wasn't compatible with the mappers...makes sense. This is a must do for every nes classic edition out there! thanks RGT85

Jeremy Austin while connected to the computer to upload the new games to the nes mini, it said I needed to dump first so I did what the instructions said to do but on the last line of instructions it said " if it's not installed yet install driver from driver folder(
I have the NES Super Games from AliExpress with 150 games on it....it's got Mighty Final Fight and Tournament Fighters on it....such an awesome cartridge of games....and the fact that its a multi-cart that has actual NES games on it instead of a bunch of repeats or "hacks" makes it so awesome. I think Mighty Final Fight might be one of my favorite games on it

It's super easy dude. Took me like 5 minutes and I was putting tons of shit on it.
The only problem is finding one. On Amazon they are $150 used. I got the money but it is a rip off.

Get a $20 PC from the thrift store. Most NES emulators run fine on old hardware. Or get an android tv box.

Emulation/ROMS are not the same. I have a decent gaming computer now. My R9 290 is more than enough for emulation. I'm one of the purest so....yeah.
If you think emulation isn't the same you shouldn't get an NES mini in the first place. You do know it's just emulating the games, right?

You won't have enough buttons to play
It will be very slow

RGT 85 - You aren't so much hackinga NES Mini itself so much as you are just making your own, better one that isn't restricted to one platform.
But if you wanted, since the NES Mini is Linux based like tge Raspberry Pi is, you could feasibly just rip the image of the Mini and slap it on to the Pi in some fashion.
But my point is, regardless of the hack the NES Mini isn't worth your money in comparison to having every 8 and 16 bit platform and full rom sets to each all under one roof. And including some post 16 bit platforms like the N64 and Dreamcast.

do the "hacked" games look as crisp as the games included with the system? That is to say, if you didn't know any better, would you be able to tell apart the games added in, and the originals?

To get River City Ransom to appear on the main screen, did you disable pages/folders? I used this method but the 7 extra games I installed appear in a separate folder. I'd like them to just be on the main screen to keep things clean.

What is the type if memory that the system has? Would it be possible for someone to increase the consoles memory.
Knew this would happen. Still excited. The thing is being able to use the USB cable as a data cable points at nintendo originally wanting to do being able to have online functionality and or updating to the system and then scrapped it, but they were too far in with the actual system.
I now wish to own the NES Mini and believe nintendo hates money because if they offered this functionality and actually distributed enough units

ok so I have I got it to work on version 2.01 without any errors but the games aren't showing up when I plug it back in and turn it on. I I use 2.05 I get an error while trying to dump the kernel. Ive used 3 different cord and tried different ports. Do you have an idea how to fix this?
I've added 20 more games but they are in a separate folder. Is there anyway to keep with the other 30 games other then a separate folder?

nice video I was able to hack the new but how can I configure my 8 bitdo controller to work with snes games . because only 2 buttons are working right now
note new games in the console take place of the saves,if you put to much games in it you can say bye to the save slots.and it can corrupt the entire console.

How do you delete games, and do your games lose their save states every time you sync even if you don't delete them?
Yo RGT! Have you updated the new version ? It allows you to have a reset option on the controller! All you gotta do is press select and down at the same time and it will get you back to the main screen like the the reset button!
There's plenty of raspberry pi counterparts that can do the same thing as this, and more. I've watched a few and they seem to use a micro sd card as storage.
How big is the storage on the NES Classic mini out of the box? Is it upgradable if you would want to fit the entire content of your happy childhood?

Buddy of mine hacked his NES Classic and it worked well. I think it was like 67/70 games he tried to load went on without a hitch (replacing the default 30).

I'm not sure if this really call hacking or if the NES Mini was made to upload games with the USB cord for later on? It does seem too odd for any Plug&Play system having a USB setup just for power cord thing because about every USB cord device I own always has a upload/download software setup for transferring data to the thing. So I was right about the USB part can be use to transfer more into the system.

Just added 60 more games to the pre-installed 30 games and they all work except Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels for some reason. Is it because SMB2:TLL is a FDS game?

I downloaded a few ROMs, such as Ice Hockey and Contra, and they all work pretty well. However, I tried to run a NWC 1990 ROM, and it told me that the save state couldn't be used every time I tried to boot the game. Bummer.
Will it erase my save states on the original 30 games if I'm just adding new games?

Yea they do. Its uncanny. The shit just works. Some games wont load, like return of joker. But it just works. I loaded 3 homebrews cause a buddy of mine wants to do homebrews at his panels and it worked. Well, 2of 3 worked. I tried mad wizard, battle-kid, and mojontwins. Mojon Twins didnt work, the the ohers worked seemlessly. The potential of this device cannot be understated. For people that do not want to order all kinds of crap and put it together, this is ideal for some things. Like loading a bunch of homebrews to show off.
If you were to put a game on the console and create a save state of the game, remove the game from the console and place it back on again. Would the save file still be there or would it clear ?
