This plug and play is definitely something, popping open the lid reveals a hole lot of obviscateing the chip with resin. They did leave the region pins exposed tho, implying it does have a mega drive clone under it (yes I did this with a pal one), unfortunately region swapping did not bring the internal games back up and octive to the original pitch. So definitely something sound chip related under the blob
Yea. But also in this video the sound issue is made worse from the tv... Never noticed it before then but the speaker quality is very low...the direct capture I did later in a follow up is much better
So what you're saying is the cartridge games actually sound good? I mean, that makes it an awesome machine in my books. There's no other Genesis "mini" that reads cartridges, right? And when it comes to sound issues I really think Genesis Mini (the official Sega one - 2019) has a way to high-pitched sound, there's basically no bass in it - I re-sold in no time.
Well I found out that yes it does distort the sound...but most was the TV here. It's got really crappy speakers. I redid this with direct capture a bit ago and the sound is closer to like an audio chip revision change... It's actually not a terrible unit if you use actual Sega controllers ...those cheap controllers don't work well
We need a plug-in board with all the different sound chips because the pallette did change with spinball 93+. To me sonic 2 and before had better sound programmed in the ROMs.
I heard the sound chip of the Genesis is hard to emulate, maybe that’s why the sound is bad, because they were too lazy to work hard to emulate the sound chip properly.
There's that....and the fact there was like...half a dozen different t sound chip revisions across the genesis line, getting it even close would've been challenging
If with the original Sonic2 cartridge the sound improves, then the problem is not in the hardware, specifically not in the audio chip of the device. This would indicates that the problem is in the software that compiles the ROMs into the hardware.
I saw these for a while and kinda was interested in them but since I had no history with Sega I kinda ignored it. This was out between my console heyday (early 00s and prior ) and me getting back into retro games ( the past few years). Honestly I only grabbed it to play genesis carts I bought. It's not a bad little thing to have around to just plug and play, and the sound issues differs on different TV's, I'd still take a legit genesis
I played one of these at a local game store. I found it to be interesting. But for me personally, sound isn't really that important. I would buy it I didn't already have a modded Sega Genesis mini with the entire library.
Yea, minus the sound part it's not terrible...its a decent little thing to play with and it plays legit carts so it's a bump up from the nes classic. But...its one of those things that to some sound is a major factor..I have a lot of memories of playing snes mario world and if the sound is off it irks me a bit...but I also have less memories of the sega line so..for all i knew it was right.
As far as I know there isn't... The much older Atari flashbacks had the ability to but it was "real Atari" on a chip These I think are some kind of emulation chips I was about to suggest those cheap multi carts from eBay or elsewhere but...I haven't tested one yet to see if they work on these
I've always wanted to give one of these a bit of a spin to see how bad it is. I do have the Mega Drive Mini and thats bloody awesome, I know this thing is bad but it would be interesting to see in person how bad
If you can get passed the odd audio difference (which apparently some do, some dont), its not bad, has like 20 or so titles (its been a bit i forgot), and it plays the og carts. I finally foung a real genesis so this will be "archived" to the shelf of my other plug and plays.
i have the ARZ model and not FIRECORE model. but trust me the ARZ model is better. the controllers are wired. and when you press a button it doesnt press it twice. but with the audio i can agree its kinda bad. but i find it very fun.
bought this Sega Genesis AtGames yesterday at Pawnshop man I gotta say im 38 games bring back good memories I havent had no problem all these kids in comments are 3 and 4
That's where I got mine...I bought about 6 games at a garage sale and needed a way to play them..its not bad..with the right tv...I think a crt wouldve done it better justice.

It was and still is an interesting psychological characteristic of online communities and their engagement with each other and reality. @@bigbabatunde1218 I think the issue was that prior to the mini console craze...most plug and plays were either atari/intellivision based or were 8 bit inspired and mostly appealed to either kids or the adults at the time wanting to replay frogger or yars revenge. I was gifted this piece of shit for Christmas 2015. I appreciate the fact that my Uncle bought it for me, but even back then I knew this thing was hot garbage. I tried to play my Sonic 1 cartridge on it, and immediately knew something was off when I heard the incorrect music emulation.
What I was telling you about Sonic and Tails' screen was white for no reason and I restarted it and nothing And then I restarted it again and it was fine, it started to play well until I chose a level and it didn't let me move at all and the game's mini screen was like inverted colors
So it's $20 on ebay and you can actually play your cartridge games on it? The sound when you use the original cartridge is fine correct? You can use the original Sega controllers to? What the heck is people complaining about?
Mostly the emulation of the hardware, the sound is 'just' off, the colors bit off etc. I did a follow up video showing it little better. It's not bad, but hard core fans are little picky on how the games are... I remember a few people complaining about the nes classic too
At first with my one (before it stopped working) i noticed the sound was weird on sonic but i didnt really care. In some games like vector man and comix zone and ristar and all the others, it sounded normal and actually pretty good. I like this console.
Comix zone sounds fine except for the title. Most sonic games sound fine enough (except sonic 3, which got absolutely ruined). Ristar sounds mostly fine except for the final boss and ending themes. VectorMan seems to be more or less the same.
Brother, I have a Sega Genesis At games Sonic console from the year 1991-1992 and today, which is May 7, 2024, I was playing it and the game screen froze and etc etc and the screen appeared
I just ordered one from eBay yesterday just to play some old cartridges. I can play all the built in games on my Switch with expansion pack or compilation Sega games for PlayStation and Switch. I do not intend to use the built in games on this thing so I hope this works out. It was only $15 used so if it doesn’t work as I hope , no big loss.
It should work good. The built in games are not too bad. There's a lot of icons in there ... I have heard it won't work with the 32x add on or those cartridges... But I've tried all...idk 30? Genesis games I have and had no issues
This is arguably the worst Sega console ever. I actually own one, and unfortunately, it runs poorly, sounds bad, and my D-pad had serious input issues and feel to it. It is quite nice that you can use the OG cartridges in it, but it has a low quality processor that makes the games garbled sometimes. They did make a portable version, that actually wasn't that bad. I actually enjoyed fooling around with it besides the scrathy and poor audio. Nice review!
I didn't know they made a portable version lol And yea but for what it is...it's not terrible. Has a nice set of games. Plus can use the original controllers since the wireless ones were not great to use apparently

I actually did not try this unit on a crt. When I made this my game room was...well just storage and all my crts were buried lol so I used my little cheapo LCD. Until years later, SEGA finally announced the official SEGA Genesis mini in late 2019 and it’s far more better than the garbage “AT Games” version they gave us! And heck in late 2022 they released a sequel to Genesis mini and it’s far more better than the first one.
Inmy oppinion it doesn’t sound bad whether with builtin games or with external games,HOWEVER those pitches are emulated very wrong, for instance what’s supposed to be pitched as note C are emulated as pitch A etc,,, but other then that it emulates the genesis pretty well,if the sega saturn could emulate sega genesis games at such level,i will definitely fall from my cheir, Now what you can do to compensate for that is to connect that clone console to a laptop ,activate pitch changer and change the pitch feom note A to note C to sound more correct, trough i wish that tv’s will gonna have a pitch change option in the audio menu sothat you can compensate for situations like this or for when movies are speded up for pal territories resulting in a higher pitch, sothat you can correct that, BUT sadly no tv i know of does have a pitch change option because that would be a welcome bonus to have.
yea no tv does this that i know of, and i guess i didnt noticed the pitch was that off, i just knew it was off and didnt sound right. And I have been doing some direct capture for a follow up but didnt try to run it through some software for pitch correction. Maybe if i think about it and find a easy to use software to do it i might check that out and see if it fixes it
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 you can download funny voice on your windows pc,it’s free, just make sure those audio settings on your pcb are correct and you can change the pitch in realtime😁

Oh yea. Had no laggy input or graphical problems that I noticed...was just the audio (Which..I also discovered part of was the TV. I did a better direct capture video and the sound was much better sounding)
Neither do I to be honest. I wasn't saying it was junk...its a decent way to paly genesis games. This video wasn't the best review, the TV there made the audio from the console sound wayyyy worse than it should've. I did a better follow up with direct capture and it sounds better
No it's not bad at all... Most of my complaints here was from the sound being really off, but I did I direct sound capture video later and turns out the cheap TV I used here was a big part of it. It sounds better on a better TV, and PC direct audio capture. It's not a bad deal.
Thats what i did, used this up until i got a model 2 genesis, well worth the wait, and glad i can see what i missed out on back then (i rocked the snes that generation)
Lol lucky. I paid about ..10? For mine at a pawn shop a year ago...and honestly I think that was pushing it. It's not bad per se for playing some of the top genesis titles and actual carts if a real one cant be found. It's just the bad sound emulation that can be a problem to some. I'm working on a follow up video (comparing direct capture from this and a real genesis) just need a new power cable, lost the one I used before lol
I honestly dont know..but I'm assuming they dont. The 32x addon from the actual genesis doesnt work, so I'm guessing the power base converter adapter wont either. But I don't fully know, i dont have the power base to test it...if I ever get one or come across one to borrow then I'll test it out
yea...i was a bit harsh in this video. i did a later follow up with better direct capture and it perfromed a lot better. the tv i used here audio sucks lol even on my SNES
There is no sound difference they both sound off and are both emulation.Cart or not it"s just runing the rom off the cart the same as runing roms off an sd card
Thats what I thought too, there shouldn't be a sound difference between them since the rom on the cart 'should' be the same rom on the internal memory, but prior to recording i read on several reviews a few games have a sound difference between a few included titles and the original cart, and Sonic seemed to be a common complaint. In the recording the sound does sound very similar, but in person there was a slight difference in it. I don't know, I need to get dedicated sound capture (and video) devices figured out, maybe then a difference can be heard then, or verify there is no sound difference. Definitely a case for a follow-up video later on.
Could be, I'm working on a followup video at some point that will have direct capture and not recording a screen like i did here, and maybe do a bit more digging into this audio issue cause it seems to be a common compliant across the older AT Games PnP systems of the early to mid 00s.
Ive considered both lol, this thing is just not all that good. Its good enough for my small collection of genesis titles, and lets me play some i dont have....but as soon as i get a legit Genesis or one of the newer flashbacks this thing will be tossed lol.
@@kevin_kevinson I've seen them around but haven't pulled the trigger on getting one..I've heard they way better than the at games ones. Maybe I'll get one eventually, after I have my fun with the og genesis

I have no idea....i didn't catch it while recording, missed it while editing... Didn't realize it until someone mentioned it. My brain just had a moment and said "yep that's the word to use"
Not sure. Who knows how it was treated or handled before you got it. Maybe taking it apart and gently cleaning the board and stuff might help. Double check the power cable to make sure it's the right polarity and voltage
i suspect the reason the sound is so bad, is because it doesnt have the original genesis sound chip, and sound emulation is never going to sound as good when its not on original hardware. Kind of a shame. great idea, poor execution. I was going to pick one of these up, now im not, thanks for the video.
Yea it's not a terrible little thing. I did a follow up with direct capture and the sound was nearly as bad... But yea I wouldn't have paid full price either
I've heard that a few times...something about there was a later..or earlier.. model, whichever, that had a slightly different game list. Some other regions had a few differing games too, but in the US market apparently there's 2 or 3.. Be neat to see what the different games are
Hey bro you're wrong! I played all three of the Ecco games last summer. Yes they are infuriating. But with cheats and save states, the games are actually pretty good. I really enjoyed Tides of Time the most and the theme song is so good! It gives me goosebumps.
I only ever played the first ecco, a friend had it on a laptop with an emulator (notnthe best way to play it but i was young and dumb in high school) I need to replay it honestly, it keeps coming up as an iconic genesis title...maybe I'll track it down on ebay and check it out..might do a whole video on it
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 I played it on my Genesis mini. I think it's the beat way to play Sega games. Save states are easy to use. Once you mod it you can play any Genesis game.

These are just a bag of 💩. Why buy one when you can get a original for the same price and if money is the issue just buy loose unbowed cartridges only about 5 quid a game.
When I bought this at the time most real genesis were pushing 50 to 100 by bucks on eBay or retro stores... And most cartridges in my area at those retro stores were 5 to over 40 bucks depending on the game...this was a cheap way to get into trying some genesis games j never got too

It's like it tries to force into stereo or something and it comes out odd. I should've did it with my better tvs but didnt want to lug one of my crts upstairs
I kinda want to open mine up now...
I know there's a couple different revisions of them... might be neat to see if mine is any different
Original Sega had a Motorola in ithat does not that will answer your question
You're Right, When I got mine, I thought it sounded very low pitch, so I knew something was off.
Yea. But also in this video the sound issue is made worse from the tv...
Never noticed it before then but the speaker quality is very low...the direct capture I did later in a follow up is much better
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 Gotcha
Oh my... The sounds so bad. I'll stick the Original version and Mobile Remaster.
It's actually not a terrible unit if you use actual Sega controllers ...those cheap controllers don't work well
There is another sega genesis mini from at games which was this one ruclips.net/video/lKxP4e54foY/видео.htmlsi=GxMpZuUBODGaK-s-
We need a plug-in board with all the different sound chips because the pallette did change with spinball 93+. To me sonic 2 and before had better sound programmed in the ROMs.
Yea.. but it makes sense for cost reasons to emulate it like they did. The sound is much better after i used a direct capture card
200 Comments Because Of This One!
Whooott!!!!
Yea that seems to be a general consensus. I retried it using direct capture and sound difference is more subtle..like chip variations or revisions.
Sound was terrible but ngl I grew up with this,it introduced me to the world of gaming
I would like to proudly say that mine has not stopped working, and my cartidge of sonic still has no issues
Hello, I have had this console for 7 years and I want to ask if it is possible to add games to it without the need for a cartridge with the game?
As far as I know there isn't...
The much older Atari flashbacks had the ability to but it was "real Atari" on a chip
These I think are some kind of emulation chips
I was about to suggest those cheap multi carts from eBay or elsewhere but...I haven't tested one yet to see if they work on these
I've always wanted to give one of these a bit of a spin to see how bad it is.
Grime Hill zone
i have the ARZ model and not FIRECORE model. but trust me the ARZ model is better. the controllers are wired. and when you press a button it doesnt press it twice. but with the audio i can agree its kinda bad. but i find it very fun.
I don't think I've come across or seen an arz model yet but if it's anything like the firecore I might pass lol dont need *that*many bad consoles lol
bought this Sega Genesis AtGames yesterday at Pawnshop man I gotta say im 38 games bring back good memories I havent had no problem all these kids in comments are 3 and 4
That's where I got mine...I bought about 6 games at a garage sale and needed a way to play them..its not bad..with the right tv...I think a crt wouldve done it better justice.
It's amusing how the gaming community went into a hyperbolic, collective meltdown over At Games before understanding and accepting what their market position was.
It was and still is an interesting psychological characteristic of online communities and their engagement with each other and reality. Should be getting picked up as a case study by some PhD professor's lecture or psychology student's thesis somewhere as a modern example of parrot fashion hysteria overthrowing common sense, reason and logic.
@@bigbabatunde1218 I think the issue was that prior to the mini console craze...most plug and plays were either atari/intellivision based or were 8 bit inspired and mostly appealed to either kids or the adults at the time wanting to replay frogger or yars revenge. The retro environment wasnt as wide spread as it is now...but when at games started making these things they said they were just like you remembered and hammered home they were your favorite 16 bit sega classics...only to have numerous faults. They got better later as the retro wave got bigger and more people demanded faithful or near faithful clones...but yes early on ? It was tough
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 I've got three At Games products in addition to having had other mini consoles, I think those 16 bit games are so strong that even playing slightly off versions of them they are still very playable.

Yea i noticed its mainly the sonics...I dont have the others to chekc but yea it seemed to be just sonic that sounded off.
Thanks for this in 2024.
I have a genesis 3 and would still buy this product to play my games and the built in game like alien storm and comix zone those games are are to get.
Yea. It's not a bad little console (I did an update video on it)
And yea some of the games are getting up there
I just ordered one from eBay yesterday just to play some old cartridges.
What is a Countsol?
Oh god 3 years later...and this still haunts me lol. I don't know i had a weird speech thing where my brain said "Yep thats the right word "
The problem with the soundtrack is the pitch is way off.
Yea...oddly direct capture the sound wasn't as off as on this tv

This is arguably the worst Sega console ever. I actually own one, and unfortunately, it runs poorly, sounds bad, and my D-pad had serious input issues and feel to it. It is quite nice that you can use the OG cartridges in it, but it has a low quality processor that makes the games garbled sometimes. They did make a portable version, that actually wasn't that bad. I actually enjoyed fooling around with it besides the scrathy and poor audio. Nice review!
I didn't know they made a portable version lol
And yea but for what it is...it's not terrible. Has a nice set of games. Plus can use the original controllers since the wireless ones were not great to use apparently
Yup i have one and yes it is bad but its fun for the price and now i can collect sega games n
I agree!
Did you mean “Counsel”?
Everyone hates these atgames early Genesis, but there literally meant for a CRT 📺 tv , in HD It's got to look like total sh*t . The white and yellow AV jack with no red stereo a major flaw . Don't know if Atgames were just super cheap in 2009 when they started making these . I've been looking for the *Atgames Sega Genesis 2018* version with the SD card slot. No luck, those are rare , oh well *The Hyperkin Mega 95* looks promising

Does the everdrive work with this genesis?
I honestly dont know. I'd assume it would but I cant say for sure...I dont have an everdrive to test it out
The original Sega has a Motorola sound chip
No, the Motorola chip is actually a CPU. And the audio chip in the Mega Drive is a “Yamaha YM2612”
Have you ever try crt tv ???? 🤔
Main reason I got because it played sega original cartridge and used original controllers and sega arcade fighting stick that works too.
🤓
Also space saver.
I got my at a thrift store only for $4.00 dollar that is good enough for me. 🙃
I actually did not try this unit on a crt.
When I made this my game room was...well just storage and all my crts were buried lol so I used my little cheapo LCD.
Although even when I did a later video on it with direct capture I didn't think to try a crt then either...was more focused on getting the sound issues figured out on it (which seems to be the TV itself lol)
I don't even remember what I paid for mine back then...like 15 or 20? (Clearly overpaid lol)
Mine looks exactly the same but has stereo output, yellow red and white outputs
I've seen those before too... I'm not sure if earlier/later model or a different company
Until years later, SEGA finally announced the official SEGA Genesis mini in late 2019 and it’s far more better than the garbage “AT Games” version they gave us! And heck in late 2022 they released a sequel to Genesis mini and it’s far more better than the first one.
Inmy oppinion it doesn’t sound bad whether with builtin games or with external games,HOWEVER those pitches are emulated very wrong, for instance what’s supposed to be pitched as note C are emulated as pitch A etc,,, but other then that it emulates the genesis pretty well,if the sega saturn could emulate sega genesis games at such level,i will definitely fall from my cheir,
Now what you can do to compensate for that is to connect that clone console to a laptop ,activate pitch changer and change the pitch feom note A to note C to sound more correct, trough i wish that tv’s will gonna have a pitch change option in the audio menu sothat you can compensate for situations like this or for when movies are speded up for pal territories resulting in a higher pitch, sothat you can correct that, BUT sadly no tv i know of does have a pitch change option because that would be a welcome bonus to have.
yea no tv does this that i know of, and i guess i didnt noticed the pitch was that off, i just knew it was off and didnt sound right. And I have been doing some direct capture for a follow up but didnt try to run it through some software for pitch correction. Maybe if i think about it and find a easy to use software to do it i might check that out and see if it fixes it
@@definitelycasualpcs8789 you can download funny voice on your windows pc,it’s free, just make sure those audio settings on your pcb are correct and you can change the pitch in realtime😁

and then I restarted it and it continued fine and I set the Casino Night level and everything was normal until it got corrupted and it gave me a green screen to go to a gray screen with old old beeps horrendous that my ears almost burst
All the machine has a problem with the sound emulation, the gameplay itself is fine though
Oh yea. Had no laggy input or graphical problems that I noticed...was just the audio
(Which..I also discovered part of was the TV. I did a better direct capture video and the sound was much better sounding)
what the big deal, if it works it works. Some of use dont have 200 dollor in our pockets to drop on the real thing.
Neither do I to be honest.
I wasn't saying it was junk...its a decent way to paly genesis games.
This video wasn't the best review, the TV there made the audio from the console sound wayyyy worse than it should've. I did a better follow up with direct capture and it sounds better
So it's basically a loaded Sega system with a Lil bad sound system not a bad deal if u can't get a real genesis that's not 200$
No it's not bad at all...
Most of my complaints here was from the sound being really off, but I did I direct sound capture video later and turns out the cheap TV I used here was a big part of it. It sounds better on a better TV, and PC direct audio capture. It's not a bad deal.
Definitely not as good as an original Sega Genesis but i have one of these! Need to get me a Original Sega Genesis also!
Thats what i did, used this up until i got a model 2 genesis, well worth the wait, and glad i can see what i missed out on back then (i rocked the snes that generation)
I need help hooking it up to my tv.😟
Does your TV have the older yellow, red and white composite connectors?
I found one today but I just paid $1 so I'm fine with it lol

But I don't fully know, i dont have the power base to test it...if I ever get one or come across one to borrow then I'll test it out
You’re too nitpicky 😂 this thing is great it’s crazy cheap I’m definitely getting this thanks for the review
yea...i was a bit harsh in this video. i did a later follow up with better direct capture and it perfromed a lot better. the tv i used here audio sucks lol even on my SNES
This could be because of different compression methods in the cartridge compared to the rom
There could be extra latency on the roms end if it's being decompressed on the fly by the system. Off the cartridge, it'd be in it's original format.
Could be, I'm working on a followup video at some point that will have direct capture and not recording a screen like i did here, and maybe do a bit more digging into this audio issue cause it seems to be a common compliant across the older AT Games PnP systems of the early to mid 00s.
poor mans sega
Had one...it was awful. I actually threw it away. Get the legends flashback, or genesis flashback 2018. They are much better.

Do upscalers work with this?. Mine doesn't.
What kind of upscaler. All my tvs still have av type inputs so I haven't had a need to use them. But I don't see why they wouldn't work...
i suspect the reason the sound is so bad, is because it doesnt have the original genesis sound chip, and sound emulation is never going to sound as good when its not on original hardware.
