      Not entirely true, Rogue Squadron along with several dozen armed freighters, hit Lusankya with several hundred proton torpedoes and concussion missiles, yet managed to only blow the bow off, it was destroyed when it was used to ram a Vong Worldship off Borleias. And Razor's Kiss was an unfinished SSD stolen by Zsinj from Kuat, that had it's shield generators destroyed in the opening moments of the battle.

      They are not easily destroyed. They usually end up going down in major battles, as they tend to be a priority target.

      The Iron Fist was attacked by a few Mon Cal cruisers and 20+ squadrons of fighters (and some sabotage), and still got away. As it was mentioned in one of the X-Wing series books they can be (and several was) destroyed by large number of smaller ships, but the cost in life/material is tremendous...

    • @roguelead72
      @roguelead72 8 лет назад +5

      The force Han attacked Iron Fist with was 2 Mon Calamari cruisers, 2 ISD 2's, a Quasar Fire carrier, and a slew of corvettes and frigates. The force Wedge had at Thyferra during the Lusyanka fight, was Rogue Squadron, a squadron of Twi'lek Deathseeds, about 100 freighters armed with proton torpedoes,and concussion missiles using the targeting data from the fighters, an Alderaanean War Frigate, and an ISD 2 that had defected. The ISD that became Booster Terrik's Errant Venture and a squadron of A-Wings dropped in later in the fight.

If you imagine that if you're really actually piloting not just a superstar destroyer, AK the literal might of the galactic empire not to mention an entire fleet, and you have to keep them all under control while simultaneously attacking rebels. I feel like that's a lot of stress and people can get very incompetent and make bad decisions if they don't think about it correctly

    I think the thing that really upsets me about the legends treatment of Super star destroyers, is not that there where more, the empire was vast. it was the fact that the executor wasn't the first one to be destroyed.
    Much like with the deathstar itself actually successfully destroying one of these things was difficult and the first time it happened was a big deal. So for legends to have even 1 to 2 of these things be destroyed before the battle of endor lessens the impact of the executors defeat.

      That might be true. But in Return of the Jedi, Han tried to calm Luke down when he felt Darth Vader's presence on the Executor by pointing out that there were a lot of super star destroyers. So the Empire definitely had a lot more than the official number. Super Star Destroyers aren't even the largest ships in the Imperial starfleet as I understand it.

      Not necessarily same class. Megador is implied to be maybe smaller.

    • @danielk5780
      @danielk5780 3 года назад +1

      @@chrissonofpear1384 Several Legend novels describe the Megador as similar to the Reaper. While the Reaper was used and sacrificed by Pelleaon to back the retreat of his forces in the Battle of Orinda (?), the Megador served as his flagship for many years and was probably the last Executor-class Star Dreadnought in service of the Empire and together with the Guardian the last Executor-class Star Dreadnought in service at all. Meaning that at the end of the established legends material (not including the Legacy era), there were only two SSD's left, both still being the most powerful ships in the Galactic Alliance navy, even though they were almost fourty years old at that time.
      The Megador is probably one of the two SSD's mentioned at the end and described as "unnamed". The name is dropped in a later novel when the ship is prominently featured in the Battle of Fondor.

    • @chrissonofpear1384
      @chrissonofpear1384 3 года назад +1

      @@danielk5780 Both pretty powerful anyway, although we have never actually seen the Battle of Orinda, outside the Essential Guide to Warfare, and a very brief first mention in Before the Storm (novel) We do have Troy Denning later say the Megador is '5 times more powerful than an ISD', which is at very least, a drastic understatement. Plus, it does have 16 engines, not 13, like the Reaper.

    I like the idea of pirates somehow being able to keep up maintainance of one of those monstrocities. Even if things run a lot better in the future, you're going to have things wearing out/ breaking down all the time just by the sheer number of machines on the ship, then there's the question of how universal SSD parts are (did the empire need special fabrication for unique items, or was almost everything interchangable with standard SD's. And how many places use parts that are functional or equivlent to an SSD part)
    They'd need to own a a planet with a decent manufacturing base just to keep it running.
    Sure, I'm overthinking it, but hey, it's a way to kill time.

  • @christianhoffmann8252

    So you can build a death star. Getting it nearly completed takes about 3 years.
    Or you could use the material and do the smart thing and build (super) star destroyers.
    If DS2 was 160km in diameter and a SSD is 19km long and 6km wide triangle of 1km height (and that's generous) you could get 350 SSDs for the price of one DS!
    Which percentage of its resources did the empire use to build DS2? Even 20% would be a lot. In my opinion the empire having hundreds of SSDs and a class of even bigger ships makes way more sense than having a tiny fleet of medium sized ships and then building a ship that is bigger than all of the other ships in the fleet combined.

    • @Gh0stR0b0

      Actually it wasn't really the A-wing that brought it down just a bunch of poorly timed events. Normally the auxiliary bridge would have kicked in but all senior bridge officers were on the main command bridge and thus no one was able to effectively save the Executor on time and that's why the Big E goes down. however under normal operating circumstances the Executor probably would have survived and kept on fighting. although not for every long.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the story of the Ravager is explained in some of the battles on Battlefront. The Survival Mission on Sullust where you steal the plans is most likely how the Rebellion becomes aware of a new Super weapon being built on Sullust, this super weapon being the last know super star destroyer, The Ravager. A campaign is launched to take Sullust from the Empire and a final assault is made on an Imperial hanger which would explain the Walker assault battle. The battle is a crushing defeat for the Rebellion as seen towards the end of the battle, the Ravager rising from the background with a fleet of Imperial class star destroyers and the Rebels are forced to retreat. Later on, intelligence would reveal the location of secret Imperial labs on Jakku which also happened to be where the Ravager was stationed. In one of the last major battles of the GCW the Rebellion launches a full scale assault on Jakku, ending with the destruction of the Ravager, and a humiliating blow to the Empire. What do you guys think?

      If I remember correctly, the Executor was destroyed by a combination of concentrated fire from the rebel fleet, which managed to take out the shields. Then a damaged A wing flew into the bridge, so there was nothing to stop the Executor from being pulled into the Death Star II's gravity.

      It wasn't the gravity that sucked it in though, but a damaged engine that caused it to veer off course. You can see a massive pillar of flame shooting out from the stern as it crashes into the Death Star.

    Y'know, if the Empire had been smart, they would've massed all their dreadnoughts into a single fleet and raided the Mon Calamari shipyards. Nothing in the galaxy could've stopped them. Even the combined Alliance Fleet would've been powerless to save the shipyards, unless the Mon Calamari had some planetary defenses set up to assist in defending against the Imperial Navy. I doubt, however, that the Alliance had the resources to set up such defenses.

      In Disney Canon, the Empire did have control of the planet of Mon Calamari, and the Rebels' MC cruisers either fled the system during the takeover or were built at secret facilities in other systems.
      In Legends, the Mon Calamari covered all of the known hyperspace routes to their planet with tons of mines and used secret routes to get in and out. So rushing in there with a dreadnought armada would be asking to lose valuable ships.
      In both continuities, the Empire's biggest weakness was always that it had too many problems to try and deal with at once, so it could never mass forces like that without leaving their backs wide open to other attacks.

    Does anyone think that perhaps the Eclipse might have a role to play in future movies? It'd certainly be a big throwback to RotJ to see an old Executor back on the big screen, and since the New Republic and the Resistance seem to be in dire need of some firepower after the destruction of their fleet in TFA, perhaps the Resistance will uncover the true location of the Eclipse and commandeer it as their new flagship... Or if not the movies, perhaps when it is eventually uncovered in some other story, maybe it will give more clues to what secrets Palpatine was up to before his death.

    "The more SSDs there are, the less impact they have." what the actual frick?! That doesn't make any sense!
    Consider this: The more SSDs the Empire has, the greater impact that the EMPIRE as a whole has. We're talking about an military power that controls the majority of an ENTIRE GALAXY! I don't think ONLY 13 SSDs is very realistic for the size of the Empire's territory and resources.
    Maybe I'm alone on this one, but the Legends version of the Imperial fleet with the Imperial-class Star Destroyer being the backbone/mid-range capital ship, and then things like the Secutor, Allegiance, Bellator, Assertor, and finally Executors filling up the fleet as well is way more realistic for the size of the Empire, and makes a much bigger impact; it makes one truly realize the scale of the Empire, the evil it represents, and just how difficult it is to defeat.

      You do know that the movies supports a lot of what you talk about, right? It's not just from the legends. The Empire had many SSDs according to Han Solo in Return of the Jedi, and we know from A New Hope that the Imperial Starfleet was large enough that it had a greater firepower than the Death Star, which strongly suggests a very large fleet of powerful warships.

    In addition to you video:
    0. Unnamed mentioned at the end of your video - from Destiny's Way book. In chapter 12 there is a description about 4km ssd, maybe its not about Executor class but another type?
    1. Project Sarlaac - prototype destroyed before finished, before Executor was build.
    2. Lusankya - 2nd build, twin sister of Executor, build in secret, named Executor-II at the begining. Was buried under Coruscant and used by Ysanne Isard as prison, then captured by New Republic.
    3. Arbitrator - lost in black hole due to hyperjump miscalculation shortly after Battle of Endor
    4. Annihilator (2nd one) - used in Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. Destroyed by Tyber Zann over Kuat when he tried to steal Eclipse-class.
    5. Armadia - part of Black Fleet (together with mentioned Intimidator/Pride of Yevetha). Black Fleet had total of 3 SSD (3rd was unnamed)
    6. Unnamed 3rd SSD of Black Fleet
    7. Whelm - part of Azure Hammer Command, destroyed in 10 ABY
    8. Dominion - left abandoned at Deep 3, found in 12 ABY by Gilad Pellaeon, destroyed in 41 ABY.
    9. Megador - left abandoned at Deep 3, found in 12 ABY by Gilad Pellaeon, in 44 ABY still in service.

  • @robertballasty395
    @robertballasty395 2 года назад

    I think there were three or four more SSD's in Legends.
    Besides Executor, Lusankya, Iron Fist, and Razor's Kiss...
    1. Admiral Pellaeon had an SSD in the Yuuzhan Vong War. We see it briefly in the post-Borleias book where Han & Leia visit the Imperial Remnant to discuss strategic cooperation. I believe it was crippled or destroyed later in the war when the Yuuzhan Vong attack Bastion. This was not the Reaper - timeline doesn't match*
    2. The New Republic was shown to have an SSD in the book where Cal Omas becomes Chief of State, Ackbar comes out of retirement to formulate a strategic war plan, and the New Republic lures the enemy into a trap, killing Warmaster Tsavong Lah and routing a couple of YH fleets. We see the SSD only at the end. It had not been part of the battle - Cal Omas had been incommunicado, mostly in hyperspace, on that ship leading up to the battle (planted rumors that he and the Jedi were in hiding on a secret base were the bait for the trap).
    3. Years later, during the "second civil war", Jacen Solo had an SSD (or something very much like one - bigger than the Anakin Solo, but also equipped with the special long-range turbolaser batteries that the Anikin Solo had). It's pretty much carved to scrap by the end of the series.
    4. Also during the second civil war, the Empire (the Moffs that had recently betrayed Pellaeon and nearly immediately sign up to live under Jacen's thumb) shows up at the Verpine shipyards to capture or destroy their manufacturing ability (they had been selling arms and ships with the Mandalorians, who had found a new vein of Beskar ore). Boba Fett fights a holding action until they have to evacuate, and convinces the hive-mother to use her entire starfighter force to annihilate the SSD.
    ----
    So, 7 or 8 (at least) in Legends continuity. I missed or forgot some of the books and comics you mentioned that establish the other dozen or so.
    Really, though, anything more that 8 or 10 total is ridiculous. The 8 I list above - only four of those were clearly built in the first civil war (near the time of the Battle of Yavin or in the few years following). The other 4 were 20-40 years after Yavin. It defies belief that there would have been enough shipyards equipped to turn out something like 15-18 SSD's in a decade or so around the time of Yavin. (The whole "building a second Death Star" thing was bad enough)
    It makes more sense looking at them as two characters expressed it. Wedge assesses the SSDs as immensely powerful, but immensely expensive and vulnerable to a less expensive force. Pellaeon laments the ripple effect the destruction of Executor had on the fleet and the Empire - the ship required a lot of personnel and was a prestige posting, so its destruction killed many young officers.
    ---
    * timeline: Along with all the other changes, has "canon" changed reference dating to Endor? Expanded Universe/Legends didn't always have individual creations lining up perfectly, but everything was referenced to the Battle of Yavin (ABY, BBY, etc...or "after A New Hope") and worked pretty well (approximately) for narrative purposes.
    Mentioning Reaper... 9 years after Endor, which is 12 years ABY.... The Yuuzhan Vong war was in years 25-30 ABY.

    Kind of irrelevant, sorta, but does anyone have an idea as to why the First Order doesn't use TIE-interceptor pattern TIES for their fleet? Is it cause they just don't have the resources to produce sutch craft, or is the FO-TIEs just all around better than the Interceptors in some way?
    Personally, I hope we see some FO-TIE-Interceptors in Ep8. Though, I wouldn't mind if they had more unique fighters for their faction. Also, it would be super awesome if we got a new Star Wars RTS.

    Had a thought today while looking at Director Orson Krennics name. I think his first name might be a nod to Orson Welles. I think this because Orson Welles was an early candidate to potentially play the voice of Darth Vader, but was then considered too recognizable, so they went with James Earl Jones. Like i said, it would be a cool nod to make Vaders rival the same name as the man who almost played him.
