I really like that Bruce Wayne actually gave him a chance and took the time to listen to him. He didn't reject his idea because he thought he was crazy. He did it because he knew it could be dangerous.
Bruce really can't call anyone crazy since hes pretty insane himself 😂
Ben Spagnuolo what do you mean?
@@MohammadAliKhalil Bruce is crazy? Lol
Ben Spagnuolo is he tho?
@@MohammadAliKhalil I mean he dresses as a bat and beats criminals senseless definitely not the traits of a sane man
I find Val Kilmer’s Bruce Wayne to be the most approachable and considerate. He was respectful and careful with his words when he turned down Riddler’s idea.
I thought he was being a jerk, he should have just put a trial forward, stating that it had potential but should be closely scrutinized, or better yet, he should have said he would oversee trials personally
And if it kills or lobotomizes someone immediately? He can't just go into a human trial blind. He needs to see the schematics and see what it's doing first. Not a jerk at all, you're basically complaining about someone asking to do a background check on a stranger before letting them rent in their house, 'overseeing' isn't enough when by then it's too late
He was pleasant.
It doesnt make for a good cover.
A playboy hedonistic bruce makes the idea that he is Batman impossible
@@myztik5716 Agreed. Bruce was right to ask for schematics first and reacted as nicely as he could have when Nygma demanded an immediate answer. Of course, given Nygma's incredible insecurity, I'm inclined to say that wasn't very nice, but that was all he could have done at that exact moment.
I never realized this as a kid, but Bruce totally offers him a chance to prove himself and Nygma blows it. I always thought he was just fucking around with him, but the only minor road block is Bruce telling him to set up an appointment.
Yea exactly. Like who would tell their company CEO no to a meeting and force them to decide on the spot. But then again Nygma was crazy so it kinda makes sense.
@@patrickl6987 well stickly also had him on a leash, so he was fairly desperate, but if he waited and set up that appointment maybe things would have been different.
Yup. No one is going to greenlight a brain manipulating device without you know, research
@@patrickl6987 But knowing him, he was probably used to people brushing him off by saying “speak with my assistant/secretary” then proceeds to tell said assistant to block his number. He wanted a yes right on the spot so he could hold Bruce accountable.
A chance is better then no chance..
Do the research, make the appointment..
But noooo... demand a Answer from the Boss.. without any other information to present..
Could be useful to rehabilitate criminals and the mentally disturbed
If you think about it, this was heartwarming on Bruce Wayne's part. Bruce Wayne was being fair with E. Nygma(despite the obviously mental instability); he gave him a chance to prove himself and he genuinely listened, and when he rejected the idea, he told Nygma why he rejected the offer and it was a reasonable one because he was concerned of the negative implications.
That’s true, it was a question of ethics
Wayne was taking precautions, Nygma’s invention was very dangerous.
“Too many questions” was a total BS answer btw. The guy who’s trying to manipulate and even bully the most successful company in Gotham to run according to his own wishes wants to build a mind machine. There are no questions, it’s got “FUCK NO” written all over it! 😆
Fun fact: Paul Dano’s riddler wears the same glasses as Jim Carrey’s riddler

I'm really glad Ed has a bobble head of the villain he hasn't even become yet, and I thought the Ghostbusters theme song being cannon in Ghostbusters 2 was odd
I mean Nygma is basically the autistic genius here who isn't understood. There are a lot of people like this, especially in technical jobs. They blow their own chances because of their quirks and inability to conduct themselves socially in a way most people consider 'legitimate'.
The sad part is that companies end up losing valuable talent while these people get depressed and have their talents wasted. And in this case that manifested itself in lashing out against society.
That intro animation looks so outdated now, it used to look so realistic when I was young.
Ezra John The campy acting is dated too. Kinda sad because this was when Batman films weren’t complicated to follow.
I wasn't a fan of Adam West's campy Batman portrayal or George Clooney's, but for some people, they think that West was the original, (so to them) portraying the character this way would be more true to the character (at least from what they know). But Batman did not begin with Adam West in the 60's, but was played years earlier by men like Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery. The character was based on serious characters like detectives and heroes: the Shadow, Wes Roland's "The Bat," ...etc... With Batman Forever, I see the villains being campy and the protagonists playing their roles more seriously.
Ezra John George Clooney to me wasn’t great as Batman. Michael Keaton in my opinion was the best Bruce Wayne. It’s good he did the film twice. I’m not a fan of anything Batman after 1997.
black panther Yes, it’s actually a fictional looking city, and the most recent Joker film is set to do filming in Jersey City, NJ. 🙄
black panther Totally agree with that, Gotham City looked pretty terrible in the dark knight movies. Simply boring.
I love this dreamy vibe of Gotham. I don't know how to describe it, but even the sky was purple
It was a genuine attempt I think to turn make the comic into a film, rather than a film based on the comic. Just look at 2:42, the shot out the window is literally just a drawing.
@@stuartwalker8755 a lot of backgrounds in films back then are high quality paintings. I love em.
@@greenmuso Right, but they are not often so clearly drawings as in this case. It doesn't even try to look photorealistic.
Some of the visuals look similar to Batman the animated series. Especially the sky.

Foreshadowing...
I love how nice Bruce Wayne is. Reminds me of the animated series after he thanks the caddy:
Rich prick: "You thank the help? Do you thank the garbage man too?"
Bruce: "if I see him"
I aswell! I always love seeing the nicer Bruce Wayne in media. He's still different from Batman but doesn't have to be a rich jerk stereotype.
It always saddens me seeing people say Val's Bruce Wayne was bad
"Why be brutalised by an uncaring world?"
I think that line spoke volumes about this version of the Riddler. Maybe because of his genius from an early age, he'd grown up as a nerdy outcast with no friends, maybe only picked on or brutalised by bullies, and while he wasn't studying, the only friends he could really turn to were those on the television screen, a form of escapism from the harsh and unforgiving reality of life. So that became his goal, to turn that dream into a NEW reality, no matter how dangerous it may have seemed (like Spellbinder's VR proved many years later), so that maybe no one would ever have to go through what he experienced growing up ever again. It seemed like giving the public a chance to be happy in a world of misery was his goal, and when he was denied that chance, it drove him over the edge, and the side effects of his Box only began to damage his mind even more, especially when he discovered much later on that his device could copy other people's thoughts to his mind and his greed got the better of him.
I think in a way, this was one of the best interpretations of the Riddler we ever got. We all know Jim Carrey's history of depression. Putting on a happy face and being all wacky is just a disguise. That same logic could've easily applied to the Riddler here. Funny and smiley on the outside, but actually deeply tragic within.
Wow. This actually explains why Ed is who he is.
Very good analysis 👍👍👍

Bruce was quite reasonable here, even for someone who was probably going to say "no." Not only would I say: He literally gave him a chance and Nigma with his arrogance and impatience messed everything up. I would say that this scene is the perfect definition of "Who goes slowly goes well and goes far"
This is the zenith of comic book writing and acting. Jim Carrey’s understanding of human disaster only means that he can’t be a bad guy in real life. I don’t think I appreciated a scene like this as a kid. Now I can see it for what it truly is... a pinnacle of cinematic achievement.

I got the sense he wanted to study it in case a villain ever used it. He could tell Nigma could snap.
@@Murphy2043 Agreed. Nigma did get his shot though so it was a win either way for Bruce.
Jon faverau walking with wayne
Doesn’t he just love working for billionaires with high tech equipment to fight criminals?

I don’t know why but this is one of my favorite scenes from this movie.Just love Kilmer and feel the movie is underrated
While not the best Batman flick out there, this is still one of the best scenes. Imagine being "touched" but having your hero shoot down your life's work. Perfect villain origin fuel
I almost see a similar take on Carrey’s Riddler with Paul Dano‘s Riddler how they both felt like they were connected to Bruce Wayne. Carrey wanted Bruce to be part of his experience and new technology but felt betrayed when Bruce said no. The same way that Dano plan was to get rid of all the politicians and Don Falcone, when Pattinson disapproved of the Riddler’s plans Dano felt betrayed as well
I literally thought this was one of the Batman games when the intro came on.
3:34 the moment he goes from Ace Ventura to Cable Guy.
This really seems like a good origin for Mad Hatter. Obsessive, smart, enthusiastic, & able to manipulate brain waves. Imagine him just beaming Alice & Wonderland into his mind. This is perfect for Mad Hatter!
3:10 "it just raises too many questions"
I feel like the Paul Dano version takes this concept and makes it WORK weirdly enough, a clearly unstable but genius man who thinks the hero will have his back, but ultimately leaves him hanging due to the fallacy of his modus operandi.
