To this date, I am not sure what Bruce was trying to accomplish here.
Exactly what happened. He was goading Joker into a confrontation. He suspected he'd get shot, hence the plate he hides in his jacket. The gunshot and inevitable scream from Vicki would bring unwanted attention and make Joker and his goons want to leave.
@@phillipzink2382 I think there were more practical ways of getting unwanted attention given Joker and his goons didn't even know he was in the house until he revealed himself. Not exactly the smartest idea to rely on a small plate to keep yourself from getting killed. Joker could have just popped him in the head. Or realized that he wasn't bleeding when he shot him in the first place.
I think it's cause Bruce does not like to feel helpless so he reacts the same way he would if he was suited up
Bruce has got likely 10 seconds to think on his feet. Sure he could have easily snuck out of there and alerted the police. Joker was likely to hurt, kidnap or even kill Vicki in a moments notice. The goal is to divert Joker's attention away from her and focus his rage/anger/attention on Bruce. Most people when firing aim for the torso. Largest surface area, easier to hit. "Aim small, miss small." It was a risk, but calculated.

I love how this Joker isn't trying to make a statement like Ledger or Phoenix. He's just the clown prince, having a great time doing bad things. I like how he's the only Joker who actually jokes a lot and has all the Joker tricks and doodads. But unlike other comic Batman characters like what Jim Carrey did, Nicholson knows when to turn off the clowning and be scary or serious. And then back to a joke. He's so great.
Jack Nicholson’s Joker reminds me of Mark Hamill’s Joker.
@@MovieEnforcer Hamill came later, so prob modeling it off Nicholson. Like the Penguin in the cartoons looks like Batman Returns Penguin.
Ledger tried to make a statement?? Ledger effortlessly embodied the idea of the Joker; humorous or dark. The writing was ahead of its time here, but still a clown show for the most port.
@@7armedman Hamill’s joker is NOTHING like Nicholson’s. He’s 100x scarier and more menacing/chaotic than Jack. Watch Mask of the Phantasm for an example. I’d argue some episodes and movies featuring Mark are closer to Ledger’s Joker than Jack’s. They also say in interviews that they strictly wrote Joker’s personality to NOT be like Jack’s in order to separate the two portrayals.
@@7armedman Actually Hamill once said he based his Joker laugh on Jack Nicholson's Joker laugh. He said he was trying to channel the same energy Nicholson was when he was playing the Joker.
The best thing about Nicholson's Joker is that he appears almost normal now and then, like someone who might even listen to reason. He's not constantly doing a crazy show, but displays a touch of cool calmness now and then. In that respect he's similar to Frank Miller's Joker, and feels a lot more dangerous underneath.
I just commented how this is one of the main reasons why this depiction of the Joker used to terrify me as a kid. The calm demeanor really throws you off because it makes him more difficult to read.

That exchange is both funny and sad at the same time 😂 The way Nicholson asks the question just kills me, but the way Keaton convey's Bruce's reaction is heartbreaking because at first it seems as if he's saying "What the hell are you talking about?" but in reality he remembers that was what his parents' killer said and its touched a nerve, especially when Joker callously says "I just like the sound of it." A moment that quickly switches from amusement to sadness. Genius scriptwriting and acting, and the culmination with that line, "I made you? You made me first." 👏🏼👏🏼

Ledger and Phoenix are PHENOMENAL. But jack is the most visually faithful.
Most visually faithful and captures his lunacy the best. That's not to say that Ledger/Phoenix aren't faithful takes. They're great versions and true to the spirit of the character. But Nicholson perfectly captures the Joker that isn't in it for anything big or trying to prove a point. He's the clown prince of crime. A guy who finds some sort of twisted humor to everything he's doing.
Nicholson gave a great performance, but his character was nothing like the joker. He was just a crazy guy who messed about and did whatever the plot wanted him to. Joker always does everything with a point. Phoenix’s is worse however.

My theory: Joker doesn't really ask that of all his victims. He just remembered asking that of Thomas Wayne before he shot him. He wanted to stick it to Bruce before killing him.
But why would Joker think of Thomas Wayne in this confrontation with Bruce? He didn't know that Bruce Wayne was Thomas Wayne's son. He didn't know who Thomas Wayne was back when he killed him and Martha. He was just some random score.
@@PrinceTron1 He didn't know billionaire Bruce Wayne was billionaire Thomas Wayne's son. WTF? How could he NOT know that?
@@gmoney66 The only one who could really know that backstory is Tim Burton. Tim could've easily had Joker say something like, "Thomas Wayne's son, huh?" Then I could possibly go with your theory. But to this day, nothing in that scene tells me that Jack said that to Bruce because of Thomas Wayne. Even Joker explained later to Batman that he was just a kid when he did that. If Tim Burton explained somewhere that young Jack Napier knew who Thomas Wayne was before he killed him and used that 'Dance with Devil' line to troll Bruce the. I'll stand correct. Jack Napier killed many people between the time he killed Thomas Wayne and Martha to the time of this scene. How do you know what he said to all his victims during that span of time off screen?
@@PrinceTron1 Do you really think that he didn't know Bruce Wayne was Thomas Wayne's son? In that case, Did you know that Eric Trump is Donald Trump's son? Did I just blow your mind?!

While I do feel bad for Robin Williams being used as bait to lure Jack Nicholson into playing the Joker, I am also glad because Nicholson gave an iconic performance in this. Jack had the perfect smile. He even did a good laugh for Joker. This is the most comic accurate Joker we've seen in live action. This Joker gives a lot of memorable lines too. And of course, Nicholson added as much of his own stuff as he could. He improvised the little dance at 3:43. That shows he was having fun with this role. Of course, if Robin Williams were indeed casted, he would have improvised a lot of stuff. Whenever Robin was in a movie, he would improvise a lot of stuff not on script like in Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jumanji.

I think it really illustrates the power and longevity of these characters that we can have such different interpretations of them over decades of storytelling. It feels like comics creators essentially invented the idea of a "reboot," allowing for fresh and new variations on a theme. The periodic reinvention of such well-known characters allows everybody to have their favorite version that focuses on the aspects that speak to their own personalities. Some people like the campy Batman, some like the brooding Batman, and some like the realistic Batman. The goofy Joker, the sinister Joker, the scary Joker. I think they're all great. They are our modern mythology.

This movie will always be the best Batman to me, and holds sentimental value and memories. My grandma is no longer with me, and she was always the one to take care of us , and instill the 🇵🇷 tradition on me... Sorry for the rant. You all have a blessed life.... Open your eyes and pay attention cause it all goes too quickly ..
Batman was just looking for an excuse to smash that vase
The Joker's line "Take thy beak from out my heart" (said at Vale's apartment) is from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven". The full line is 'Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!' (the "beak" being of the raven).
That eyebrow expression and cheeky laughter, a 1st class acting skill
Cast: Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, and The Joker as Jack Nicholson
Duh
Spoilers???
@Cole Young You're welcome!
You're forgetting that massive bowl of popcorn
1:33 take a moment to appreciate how quick on the draw Bob the Goon was.
He used to be the sidekick of Conan the Barbarian.
@@HariSeldon913 I like him already.
Bruce: “I know who you are.”
Joker: “You and this entire city, bucko.”
Some people forget how good Jack was, it was unprecedented at the time to even be nominated for a comic role. He was damn near perfect.
Please remove (word removed) from your comment, but yeah, he was great! (Though a little scary!)
@@RUclipsCFO So should you leave it in yours?
@@RUclipsCFO What word? Why remove it?
@@owens.studios You're just not getting it, are you Owen. THINK before you (word removed).
I love how joker moves in on 3:00 with that look of happiness to see the results.
I always loved this scene. Joker comes in like he's the star, the craziest guy in the room... Then in comes Bruce Wayne and just gets right in there with him throwing Joker off a bit
That bit when he smashes the mask and laughs like a lunatic is the funniest scene in film history!
Beetlejuice talks with Joker 2:37.
Fantomas 2:36-2:38 that would’ve been awesome, if beetlejuice and joker are making crazy 😝 at each other.
Always thought I was the only one who noticed.
*Immediately takes out Glock 19*
😂
and then the next joker looks like beetlejuice
0:47 he totally threw her out of that window didn't he?
I don't think so. The Joker had disfigured Alicia and probably abused and tortured her into the kind of numb state she appears in in a previous scene. I think the implication is that he drove her to suicide.
No I honestly think he drove her nuts. Fuck knows what he did to her.
Jack Nicholson was just plain awesome. His name fit his personality. He made the 90s that much better.
He’s a legend and hes also a legend as Jack Torrance and Joker and I forgot to see the new Joaquin Phoenix Joker but it was Rated R I really wanted to see it
Jack Nicholson is my favorite iteration of Joker I feel like he understands the character and he also reminds me of The joker from the arkham games
Is incredible how all the Jokers in movie are kind of special and unique, he is a real monster.
0:42 so that's where Joaquin Phoenix got that from when he said he use to think his life was a tragedy before realizing it's a comedy
0:49 this is why I love his joker
Bruce is talking about himself and how crazy he is.
Batman/Bruce is certifiably crazy!
I mean who the hell wears a sh*ta** bat costume and fights villains like a goddamn superhero?
@@hehe-jg8zz the costume is great tho
@@JackyBoy3902 sure but what kind of a grown man fights like a superhero tho
2:30 Thank you closed captioning for finally telling me what the hell he said.
2:33 R.I.P. Vase. It was a good Vase. I started to like that Vase. It is in a better place now.
I'll miss that vase
What I love about the Joker is that I love this Joker, but I also love Hamill's and Ledger's and John DiMaggio's. There are a lot of valid and interesting interpretations and performances for the character and it's part of what makes him so interesting.
everyone of these actors were a perfect fit
My favorite Joker. Chicago gangster, lunatic, intelligent, actor....
Mine is heath ledger
@@ghostface6135 yeah, he was brillant, but I love the old 2 movies 🙃
@@MrZillas oh cool
2:47 that moment when Bruce Wayne realises who killed his parents
I'm here after watching The Flash - Official Trailer 2 ... Iconic line. Iconic Batman ever
Do you want to go crazy?
let's get nuts!!!
2:35 Imagine if someone did an earrape version of him yelling.
Heath Ledger was amazing as the Joker. The amazing thing is Jack does an equal job just from a different era. Bravo to both.
Best Joker, best Batman in the whole History of Movies with one of them.
Indeed!!!.
i would also say heath
And best batmobile
@@RecruitedAndrew no
2:35 Not only is Jack sorta breaking character (Though it is a natural reaction to be a bit twitchy at a moment like that) but if you look close, it looks as though Jack Nickolson the actor is mouthing (repeating) when Michael is saying in order to remember his timing in when to come in to say his following in line. That is what it looks like to me when you see his mouth moving in sync with what Michael is saying.
Tim burton made the ideal version of Batman in my mind. It is dark while still having a somewhat lighthearted tone. Not to mention his sets and aesthetics are off the charts and Gotham really feels like it is in another world. The dark knight trilogy may be better in terms of storytelling but they strip away superhero/fantasy elements and are more like police/action thrillers (though they are certainly entertaining and terrific in their own right).
The only thing I disliked was that Batman was not the central character. In the first movie, Batman didn't even appear for most of the first act. Then in the second, it was mostly about Penguin and Catwoman. I can't recall why that was. I do like that Bruce Wayne was portrayed as a damaged, awkward, sad guy who had nothing in his life except the cowl. That kind of Bruce hasn't been seen since really.
@@Radb707 Only thing i didn't like in Burtons Batman is Batman. He's to stiff and fights are not that great but everything else is great, especially the atmosphere of Gotham. This Joker was awesome
@@Radb707You can literally say the exact same thing about The Dark Knight. Joker is the central character of that movie as well.
