Batman dropping in through the window, with that music and angle. Gave me goosebumps from when I first saw this as a kid, and still now. This movie holds a big spot in my heart.
"I am the world's first fully functioning homicidal artist." I was today years old when I realized that's what he said...and I've been watching this movie since the early 90s.
This is one of the few moments in movie history that was ingrained in my head ever since childhood; Jack Nicholson (as the Joker) dancing to Partyman by Princewas phenomenal... him dancing on the float to Prince's Trust was also a memorable moment.
This movie should never be underestimated. If you've grown up with marvel movies etc you'd be surprised at what a huge risk a batman movie was perceived to be! Up to 89 if you said Batman, sure us comic book nerds where deep in dark storylines like Death in the family or books like killing joke etc, but on screen..? Yea you thought Adam West.. Kapow (no bad thing, I still love it) but the public would just see Lycra and "camp". Burton had a job to do.. A BIG job. And he nailed it. Nicholson is having a BALL in this film and his joker was VERY similar in story and tone to the comics of the time. Keaton had a lot to prove with negativity in the press. That he just wasn't Batman... And look how he nails it from his first scene.. But for me the most important point Burton gets right is in a character that most of the other movies forget to include... GOTHAM.. This is the Gotham of the comics.. Stylish.. Noir... German expressionism.. And fxxxing dark.. For me that was missed by the post Burton Bat movies. For me Batman works in HIS environment not just some random generic city. Anywho the battle for the best joker will go on and on thankfully.. And I'm sure he'd like that cos like in the comics... he contains multitudes
I was born the year this came out. I was obsessed with Batman from the time I was like four years old. Watched The Animated Series like every day. After getting into comics and reading the books Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, etc... I always though this movie was just that- perfect atmosphere and totally nails the Gotham of the comics. I’ve always thought Keaton was the best Batman, hands down.
I saw this movie in theaters 4 times when i was 7 and it got me into Batman as i was more into Superman and Swamp Thing before this and i started to read the comics and watched/taped the 60's show back in 89/90 even rented the 1966 movie and i saw Returns 3 times in theaters at age 10 and watched/taped Batman TAS on Fox/WB as a kid and teen
Michael Keaton was an odd choice until he turned out to be the greatest Batman ever. People expected a Christian Bale look not Beetlejuice. A century from now I think 1989 Batman will be considered the superior film. Bale's is already a distant memory.
Tiny detail, but I really like how he spares the Bacon piece because he "kinda likes it" (at 2:49). Captures his Joker pretty well, his violence and shock as a form of art, much like how Francis Bacon painted.
I remember watching this as a kid and loving this scene and Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker. Him leaving the Francis Bacon painting undamaged is a nice touch, I realise now this scene subconsciously led to my love for Bacon's work!
That last line delivery "Where does he get those Wonderful toys" .. the inflection is so perfect, It perfectly shows how Jack was Heath Joker before Heath was Joker.
I think in the script, it was later on shown that the money he threw away during the parade was exactly dollar bills with his face on it. It's in the comic book adaptation and the novel It think.
Something I love about this joker is how the movie shows that he was already a maniac before he fell into a vat of acid, that aspect of him is what pushed him further over the edge, I always find this take on the character the most interesting while making him intimidate with his sense of gruesome humor, and the genuine threat he holds, much like heath ledger would do down the line
Just randomly decided to watch this again, and wouldn't you know I immediately recognized who painted the piece Joker didn't want to destroy! That is a piece by Francis Bacon, one of the most tortured artists to have ever lived. His life was full of tragedy, and he was very effective at translating that pain into his work. If you look it up, you can find a reference of Bacon himself sitting in front of the two slabs of meat. :)
The guy with the candles is living in his own world and dancing 😂 Joker is like "Give him a shave" and he just looks at the painting and continues dancing

Somehow, I'm more disturbed when Joker has a "normal" face than his clown paint face. I think it's just his smile is literally attached to his face that makes it disturbing.
mikesitzler1106 exactly
Better than ledgers scars I know it's ambiguous to how he got them but in Jacks case it's more ironic
Yeah lol. I think the perma-grin was used to make him look more like the comic books
@mikesitzler1106 That's skin makeup he has on his face. His white makeup is permanently stuck on his face without being able to wash off. Vicky Vale washed the skin makeup off his face when she splashed the pitcher of water on his face.
@Marcus Graham I'm sure if that white makeup was able to wash off, he would have washed it off. But that smile is also permanently stuck on his face whether his white makeup is shown or not.
One of the best Batman films
If anybody is wondering the song in the background is "Partyman" by Prince. Hes an amazing artist
Yes.

That's the song!
Everyone in existence already knew this...
Small indie artist you've probably never heard of, Prince.
He was the quintessential joker: both funny and psychotic
He's way better than Ledger in my opinion.
He is the best joker no joke. Lol
Ledger was too overconfident in his performance. He sounded like he had a vocal disease
@@Muzical-Man hey I never said anything about his voice. Thats not nice. Its just mean, miserable, and shabby if im honest. Whats that got to do with it. He completely nailed each mannerism, right down to the iconic laugh. Its down to opinion and angles but what you said was just low

2:09 What I like about it is that him slapping the painting seems to oddly fit with Prince's singing.
This is one of the few moments in movie history that was ingrained in my head ever since childhood; Jack Nicholson (as the Joker) dancing to Partyman by Princewas phenomenal... him dancing on the float to Prince's Trust was also a memorable moment.

The original can never be replaced. Nothing has come close to this jack is the joker
I am sorry but the original joker actor would be Cesar Julio Romero, Jr., the actor for the joker in the 1960s series.
I remember seeing this in the theater back in 89 when I was 7 and the audience going crazy when Batman crashed through the ceiling
I hope the new reboot proves to do just that, again.
I’ve always thought Keaton was the best Batman, hands down.
there's never been another one like it. there never will be.

I just get to know about this artist recently, it feels really amazing to see his painting here!
Burton was a big fan of Bacon.

That last line delivery "Where does he get those Wonderful toys" .. the inflection is so perfect, It perfectly shows how Jack was Heath Joker before Heath was Joker.
“I am the world’s first fully functioning homicidal artist” that was definitely the Joker.
It is well known fact that Joker's entire dance sequence in this scene was totally improvised on the spot by Jack Nicholson.
Nobody's going to mention that when vicki asked joker what he wanted, he paused to think before replying his face on the one dollar bill.
I think in the script, it was later on shown that the money he threw away during the parade was exactly dollar bills with his face on it. It's in the comic book adaptation and the novel It think.
@@yauyuso you can freeze frame on the money and see it when its close enough i think

It was probably either too costly or too close to shooting to alter that scene any more than how it turned out.

As I get older, I appreciate this movie more and more.
Jack Nicholson will always be the best Joker, IMO, just like Jim Carrey was the best choice for the Riddler. Both made those characters legendary!!

Man Jack looks like he surely enjoyed playing that part.
