I relate to Nicholas in terms of working out! I used to be a competitive floorballer many years ago (early 20s) until I had to quit the team due to a knee injury (i.e the cartilage in my left knee wore out) so I snowballed into a very sedentary lifestyle working a 9-5 office job. I also didn't really keep track of what I was eating and had an unhealthy snacking habit. I'm in my early 30s now and was able to start my fitness journey at Ritual in Sept last year after being damn sian of how I was living my life, and really did a 180 change - clean diet (i.e no fast food, junk food, bubble tea but for bubble tea, I haven't touched it since circuit breaker period) and working out at least 3-4 times a week. I then transited into working out everyday in January this year and started intermittent fasting (i.e 16:8 in June this year progressing to 18:6 this month). Exercise has done a tremendous amount of good not just for my physical health (i.e losing a total of 14.4kg at current - started at 65kg and am 50.6kg now which is so so close to my goal weight of 50kg!) but also for my mental health! Seeing these amazing results and progress then made me pursue a career in the fitness industry, so I officially attained my Certified Personal Cert last month :) I also enjoyed shopping for new clothes because I downsized by so much and felt like my hard work paid off!
P/S I also faced body shaming when I was growing up even tho I was never a fat and chubby kid, which saw a severe dip in my self-esteem and I went through phases of body dysmorphia and purging my food each time I ate because I felt so guilty. Thankfully, I was able to take control of the unhealthy relationship I once had with food and my body thanks to my decision to become a healthier and stronger version of myself :)

Add not restrict is a great tip. Whenever I try to restrict something (e.g. dessert) I'll keep thinking about it and craving it and end up giving in or holding off with mych misery. But when i place zero restrictions, I don't crave these stuff so much anymore.

in terms of growing up being a bigger girl, i lost 23kg due to a health-scare, and while doing the weight-loss for it there were a lot of symptoms of having bad eating habits such as restrictive, binge then purge. While doing so i was losing so much weight and getting romantic attention(did some damage to my relationships with people where insecurities are involved for most of the part, where its really proven when being smaller is more beautiful instead and i know that's not the case every shape is beautiful) that i didnt use to get growing up it was so bad for my mental health and destroyed my relationship with food hence i really relates to what joey said about when people compliments the weight-loss and its not being done a healthy way. Anyway great episode

I can relate to all the stories that all 3 hosts were sharing, especially myself because I used to be severely obese, tipping the weighing scale at 92kg. Since primary school all the way up till secondary school, I was in the TAF club. As long as you are obese and you are a member in the club unwillingly because of your size. For me, I dreaded TAF club because it always happens 3 times a week on odd number days (Mon, Wed and Fri) and the worse is if you have PE lessons that coincides with days that has TAF club, lagi worse because double the workout, double the sweat. 🫠 The humiliating part of being in TAF club was that every morning while other students would stay in class for morning silent reading session, students like myself who are obese are being called out over the PA system to attend TAF club before class starts. I don't know where to hide myself but feeling shameful being called out publicly. It all changed for me when I saw one of my classmate who was in TAF club managed to shed weight and I thought to myself that if he can do it, I can do it too. The rest was history and I managed to drop from 92kg to the lowest of 62kg. It was during the new school term in Sec 4, some of my teachers couldn't recognise me because of the drastic weight loss.
I was also a victim of being bullied, being called nasty names, always being picked last or picked to be the goalkeeper during soccer games because I have a bigger size frame to block opponents from scoring thus I was assigned the role. Fast forward to adulthood, I have a love hate r/s with food. Like most ladies, even I myself would binge whenever I feel stress or I feel like I was never enough in image standards. I would eat finish a bag of chips and two boxes of Ovaltine cookies to make myself happy and then do HIIT training to burn off those of what I ate. It was a vicious cycle and it kept repeating until I found myself that despite doing so much HIIT training and minimal to zero strength training, my weight was still stagnant. Fast forward to till present day, I'm in the best shape of my life in my early 30s when I engage a PT to help me.
She completely overhaul my nutrition, my training and recommend me foods that I should be eating constantly to maintain muscle mass, and that I should not avoid carbs and most importantly is the amount of rest I need to get. I used to be an avid runner doing half or full marathons and I would get lighting bolt sensation on my right knee whenever I climb stairs. I also had plantar fascia on my right heel whenever I wake up in the morning, my right heel touches the floor it sends a painful sensation, it was all due to years of running and not a lot of strength training.
Presently right now, I couldn't be more than happy with my current training regime that my PT has curated for me whenever we meet for PT session or a series of workout that she has planned for me to do at home. Right now I would be at the supermarket aisle reading labels on food packaging on what goes into our body that help to build and maintain muscle mass and what food can help us stay fuller so that we don't binge. Till today, I'm still practicing to not binge because the mind can at times play tricks on you, to the point that you lose sight of why you started your fitness journey and what a moment of folly you do could ruined it. I don't feel pain on my knees and that I feel stronger as I've ever been. I've learnt to be kinder and gentle to myself when it comes to food and also my own body image. I don't have to be like the guy with buldging muscles next door, but I can be my own version instead.
To all that are struggling with body image issues be it guys or gals, don't be discouraged. Find an activity that you could do easily like doing a 20 min brisk walk or a 2km light jog at the park, grab a friend to join you because it will make the session even fun and enjoyable. Keep each other accountable with food logs check in and activity check in every now and then so that you don't lose focus on your objectives which is to be healthy. Being healthy is expensive but being unhealthy has a hefty price tag that is 10 times worse.
You've got this! Thank you for this timely episode. ☺️✌🏻
