The episode starts with a peaceful image of Howard’s fictional grave, and ends with the tragic reality of his actual grave. People think he’s out at sea when in reality he’s buried way underground in an unmarked grave next to the guy who murdered him.

I love how the "it could have" scene sets up the showdown at Casa Tranquila. In both scenarios (Lalo and Hector/Walt), Mike is temporarily out of the picture and Gus sticks his neck out because it's a Salamanca and his pride makes him feel like he has to be the one to kill them. In the showdown with Lalo, Mike comes away condemning Gus for sticking his neck out like this and telling him it could have gone a different way. Gus, emboldened by his victory, confidently says "it could have," so confident in his abilities that this victory has only reinforced his belief that this was the right way to go. So in Breaking Bad when Mike is similarly out of the picture and Gus has the extremely risky opportunity to finish off a Salamanca, we can assume that his victory against Lalo bolsters his confidence enough to take that action, leading to his ultimate demise.

    • @unoriginalname6354

I actually thought Gus’ “It could have” was a very stern rebuttal to Mike. Mike, one of the smartest characters in the entire franchise; got COMPLETELY outplayed by Lalo. Lalo was basically just having him and his entire security team playing fetch. One of the very rare moments where Mike looks like a fool. Because of that, Gus was not defended nearly as strongly as he could have been. They’ve also been doubtful of Gus and mistaking his insight as delusions of a very paranoid and anxious man, constantly trying to convince him that Lalo wasn’t a threat. So I took Gus’ “It could have” having strong underlying tones of:
“YES! It could have went very differently, I could have died. I could have been tortured! Man, I wish that I had a competent security team under my payroll! Maybe if you all weren’t busy going on wild goose chases and doubting my fucking sharp intuition, I might have been in a more fortified position as I confront a major enemy that’s about to infiltrate my super secret lab. IT COULD HAVE went differently! I’m very grateful that I “got lucky” and ended up killing my enemy thanks to my own planning and strategy. Everything could have been went so differently.”

The greatest magic trick this show has performed is turning Gus into something of a good guy. Yes, he does bad things throughout Better Call Saul, but we see it from his perspective and know that there's always a justification. We also see him as a good boss, something that is repeated once again with the Lyle subplot. And because he's no longer the show's villain, they had to bring in somebody who is even worse to go up against Gus. We root for Gus in this show, despite knowing all of the terrible things he does in Breaking Bad. Very few shows would be able to pull off that trick.

Awesome reaction Brandon. Love this season so far. This episode though did leave a bad taste in my mouth. Howard was done soooo dirty. On top of his reputation being tarnished he was buried with a monster. I'll never look at those lab scenes the same in BB. Knowing it's an unmarked grave. And it seemed like Mike was disgusted with Howard's death and burial. Rightfully so. And he seemed disappointed in Kim and Jimmy for their schemes against Howard. Mike hates when the innocent die related to the game. Kim is going to have some serious ptsd from this. I see it affecting her more than Jimmy going foward. And with her fate uncertain still, I think the 2 are linked. But awesome episode and reaction.
And is it just me or does anyone else think the fly from breaking bads one-off(about the fly in the lab) episode was Lalo reincarnated back to torture gus's business and cook, Walter White.???

    • @isaiahromero9861
      @isaiahromero9861 2 года назад

Everyone's predicting Kim will struggle more than jimmy in regards to Howard's death, and I think that will be the case at first, but they've clearly been building up her character arc with a lot of momentum down bad choice road, and I don't think they're gonna stop now. I think this is the event that traumatizes Saul AND Kim to the point where they're willing to keep the Saul Goodman operation going and even buying a luxurious mansion like we saw in season 6's opening. I can't see Kim dying or being sent away in the next few episodes, she has to be in the breaking bad timeline, and I don't know what her role is but I imagine she's helping Saul in some way behind the scenes

Lalo didn't wanna kill gus, he wanted the proof that gus is betraying the cartel. Doesn't make sense for him to let someone go and try and kill him, if you get that you knew it was a trap from the start and Gus understood that. He placed that gun there knowing lalo would come down with him at some point at the underground lab(proof). Gus knew everything and played along.

Saul picking Kim to go to Gus's fake house may have been a mistake. She heard his voice on the phone and saw the stand-in, so she could possibly identify him. She knows his description but has the voice to go by too. Kim also saw all of the guys there at the house, and knows something was going on, more than just Mike looking out for Saul. She now knows way too much info, far more than Saul as to whom else is involved.

I found it extremely lucky of Gus to be able to hit Lalo in the dark with only a few shots. But after rewatching the scene again, it made more sense that it wasnt just luck, but skill and ingenuity on Gus' part. Once the lights went out, Lalo would instinctively try to shoot Gus, a moving target in the dark with body armor. Damn, near impossible to stop. Once Gus got to the gun, he actually had a painted target on Lalo...the light from Lalo's muzzle flashes. That's what Gus was aiming for. Which makes sense, assuming Lalo holds his gun directly in front of him, the concentrated wounds around Lalo's neck and upper chest area. It was a small window to aim and shoot at the flashing light, until either Gus was hit again or Lalo runs out of bullets. That would require a bit of luck, but also skill and poise with all the adrenaline pumping. There's still a lot we don't know about Gus' backstory, but he would have to be a highly trained marksman to make those shots. Incredible scene, nonetheless.

How will Gus handle Tuco return from prison and keep Hector from sending Tuco after him?
Hector knew Lalo was going after him and then simply disappeared so he'd certainly be suspicious.
Perhaps later on, Hector and Tuco were planning on having a meeting with Don Eladio about Gus which was why the cousins were really coming to get them but the meeting never happened because of the actions of Walt, Jesse, and Hank.

Glad to see how some appreciate their show being reacted to and watched like this by dedicated fans.
Even though I was stoked to watch this episode after waiting for so long, afterwards I just felt sad. Even more than when Howard was killed. He was almost like a reversed Walter, where first I saw him as this heartless petty prick who deserved anything bad happening to him. But then having so much sympathy for him at the end. Publicly presumed lost in the sea by suicide with his reputation totally shattered by lies, but in reality buried beneath a concrete slab with his murderer. That's not a happy ending in any way.
For me that tragedy totally overshadowed the Lalo-Fring showdown.
Patrick Fabian did a good job keeping a straight face when he earlier in interviews said he was so very happy how the last season had turned out, both as a whole and for his character. THAT was masterful acting!
