The fact he sits there clearly contemplating his past, and Max's death, and then abruptly leaves, shows that he can never really get close to anyone again. I love the collective knowledge and passion from the fans of BCS. This is how well they have narrowed down the timeline jump. This is copied from the wikia:
"After the time jump, as Saul is driving into his office, it is stated in the radio that the S&P 500 rose by 5 points the prior day. If you narrow down this period to November 1, 2004 - November 30, 2005 (based on the license plate expiring in November, 2005), the only day the S&P 500 rose by exactly 5 points is February 10, 2005. Therefore, the next day when he’s driving into work would be February 11, 2005."
So that would be 33 weeks (8 months) after Kim left and still almost 4½ years until Saul meets Walt and just over 5 years before Saul becomes Gene.

He did five Saul episodes in total, all of them masterpieces: Quite a Ride (the one that kicks off with a time-jump to BrBa, even shot on film), The Guy for This (re-introducing Hank and Gomez), Wexler v. Goodman (with a similar scene in their apartment, but that time it'd ended with a proposal), Wine and Roses (S6 premiere) and this one. An extraordinary artist.

How abruptly it cuts from Jimmy’s argument with Kim to Saul in his lavish mansion, waking aside a hooker, is so well done. No time to process. No time to know what happened.
The viewer is firmly in Saul’s shoes. No closure (at least yet). Unanswered questions. So many. And it’s perfect. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is so befitting of Saul and this show’s tone to go “yup, this traumatizing life event happened. Saul and Kim ruined a man’s career, got him tragically and pointlessly murdered, and broke up. That’s not the kind of person he is anymore. Someone else in the comments said “we can draw a straight line from Kim leaving Jimmy, to Jimmy fully becoming Saul as a method of coping with everything he’s lost.” I think many people forget how sad Jimmy is deep down. Saul isn’t sad. Jimmy is. Saul was born out of Jimmy’s desire to shove down his emotions and his heart. Jimmy wouldn’t have to take the beating of life. Saul could take it for him.
Giving the viewer nothing to see, nothing to grasp, just jumping immediately, puts us in Jimmy’s shoes. He didn’t take time to compartmentalize. He didn’t take time to grieve. This was Hector’s Chicanery-moment there at Eladio’s place. All tracks covered by Gus, and surprisingly enough Lalo as well when he faked his own death and only told Hector of all people he was still alive.
And similar to the Chuck and Howard stories; I think Eladio believes Hector to some extent, but there is nothing you can do about it without proof.
But unlike Chuck and Howard, Hector had just his dingdingdings to make his point 🔔

Sort of a thesis statement for the whole series. The different ways the characters seek what they see as justice for what they've suffered, putting everything else they hold dear on hold (Gus going so far as to deny himself any distraction that might allow him to move on with his life). Nacho's dad undercuts all of this by calling out Mike on it, and in the end Kim's response to all of this is that she can no longer make "justice" - in her sense the legal profession - her life.

    • @schmuck.on.wheels
      @schmuck.on.wheels 2 года назад

This is a really great point. I would just say that the issue Kim has is maybe less that she's made justice her life, but that she's made herself the arbiter of justice. For a while now she's differentiated (somewhat rightfully so) that there's a difference between legal justice and moral justice (see: Mesa Verde vs. Edward Acker), and she's tried to help those who are "deserving" (and had no problem hurting those who aren't, like Howard). And I think she's reached a point where she's like "who am I to pass judgement on people?".

The last scene with Jimmy and Kim is one of those great moments when waiting week to week, instead of binging, is actually a good thing. Having that time to reflect that that whole era is just...over. Their relationship and everything that caused it's downfall. If I binged it all (assuming it was released) I don't think would have had that lasting impression, that time to think about it. It wasn't that impactful when watching it but, but thinking about it afterwards, I can't get it out of my head, it's so heartbreaking and leaves me feeling so empty. There was no neat bow connecting absolutely everything to smoothly transition into BB-era, just a sudden cut. We had all been eagerly awaiting the moment for Jimmy to turn into Saul, now we finally have it, and we just want to go back. Unbelievable writing.

While it's good to see Saul Goodman from breaking bad again, The whole context from the episode and everything leading up to it makes the whole experience so tragic and sad. Kim was the only thing keeping Jimmy McGill alive, and with her gone Jimmy McGill is empty, which makes him want to fill that hole with material wealth, lavishness, a woman of the day, and meaningless things. Saul Goodman is just Jimmy McGill trying to find happiness and failing.

Even though Kim saves herself by leaving Jimmy, she also saves herself with Cheryl. It's like her final blow to clean up the mess they made, cover their asses and then walk away to save herself -- but she does not truly clear Howard's reputation or take responsibility or face true justice or relieve the pain of Cheryl by coming clean and paying the price. Had she done that and faced justice, Jimmy would have also gone to jail for covering up Howard's murder, so BB never would have happened the way it did. Perhaps she will turn herself and Jimmy in, in the Gene timeline. But I'm not so sure these two truly believe that justice should be done "though the heavens fall" if it means giving up their lives and freedom. And what would justice be?? After BB Saul is a wanted man, so Cheryl may revisit the idea that he was harassing Howard, maybe even digging up some info on his involvement in covering his murder and howards body returned home for a proper burial. Is that justice?? Or are we talking only legal justice. Because we, just like Jimmy and kim, can't decide who gets karmic justice, and we can't go with revenge like Mike and gus and the Salamancas sangre por sangre. So what would justice look like here??

This episode gave us an entire new perspective for how we view Jimmy, Mike, and Gus.
Gus cannot live a normal life due to his stark need for revenge. Gus still feels pain from Max's death and will stop at nothing to pursue his vengeance.
The revenge factor bleeds into Mike who gets a dose of reality from Papa Varga. Mike seems like a decent guy to us, but to the average person he's just another criminal. Mike still feels the agony from Matty's death but also Werner's death. He tries to be the good samaritan but instead he receives more and more pain.
Then we have Jimmy who loses the person that was keeping him afloat in terms of staying as Jimmy, at least what was left of him. Kim leaving is the final piece of the transformation puzzle. Jimmy toed the line with the law, but Saul steps over the line.
All three characters go into Breaking Bad with significant losses. Losses that shaped them into the people they probably should have never become. Ridiculously great writing of course, but wow is it tragic.
Better Call Saul showed the backstories, Breaking Bad shows the transformations. Chef's Kiss 🤌

Hard read that it’s Howard’s wife sending people after Jimmy (Gene) and potentially Kim in the present time. So much emphasis in this episode and episode 7 on both Howard himself telling her the things she’s gonna hear about him aren’t true, and her own suspicions at the wake. Imagine how she’d respond after the fallout of Breaking Bad and it becoming public information that Jimmy is a cartel associate on the run. All but confirmed that he caused Howard’s death.

Francesca mentions to Saul that he has to represent another public masturbator. When he makes his first appearance in Breaking Bad, he confuses Badger with a new client, who is a public masturbator. Therefore, I would imagine this ending takes place a day or two before he first appears chronologically in Breaking Bad. I would not be shocked if Walt and Jesse show up in next week's episode and we see the 'Better Call Saul' episode of Breaking Bad from his perspective while having Mike track down info on Walt after the kidnapping.
Also... Hamlin's wife asking Jimmy and Kim to explain what they told the police mimics Lalo asking Jimmy to explain his story about what happened in the desert the previous season with both reiterating a made up story that Mike advised them on.
