    I feel like the line from the trailers "who's here to see Saul Goodman?" Was partially directed at the audience. We have all been excited to see how he finally goes over the edge and goes all into the Saul persona but when it happened, it was like a gut punch and all we want is Jimmy McGill back even though we know that doesn't happen

      I think season 1 really undersold the show. it planted some interesting seeds, but it kind of meandered during the first few episodes. it really had more of an uphill battle as a show, much more than Breaking Bad ever did. no one would've batted an eye if it flopped. but man oh man, I'm so glad it didn't.

    Another thing I want to add to the Gus wine bar scene on top of what you have already said is when Mike and Jimmy both said this quote, “One day you’ll wake up, and then you’ll suddenly realize that you haven’t thought about it at all, and that’s the moment you know that you can forget.”
    In this brief instance, we can see Gus actually forget about Max entirely (aka the whole entire reason why he went down this path to begin with. He wanted to get revenge for Max), as we see him potentially considering a “new life” with this bartender, but then he not only realizes that he can’t be with him due to being the man he is, but also the realization that he hasn’t thought about Max at all, and he cannot allow himself to do that, so he immediately leaves. He’s reminded that he needs to keep his mind focused on the bigger picture for Max and he quickly snaps out of it.
    It’s also worth noting that this only happened after the bartender had just described the wine with having a “meaty/bloody” taste to it, and then only to see Gus’s mood immediately shift after drinking the rest. He’s again reminded about his whole plot for revenge by that small insignificant detail about the wine, as it’s a phrase that’s very similar to “blood for blood”, which once again reminded him about the cartel since it’s a line that Hector always says, and Hector being his number one enemy.
    This was an enormous victory for Gus that should’ve called for a huge celebration and all he does is drink a single glass of wine all alone, and forgetting about Max and his problems for a brief moment, before suddenly being reminded of them again. It’s incredibly sad because he WAS genuinely happy too.

      It’s interesting to hear you say that, because it seems like you had the normal, healthy response to loss that Jimmy does not. You feel the pain but eventually you find a way to move on and love again. Jimmy doesn’t move on from his losses. After Kim leaves, to avoid the pain of loving and losing again, he becomes soulless Saul, who cares about no one, and just lives for material status. I think a tiny bit of Jimmy - who loved his brother, his friend, and his wife- is still in there somewhere, though. We’ll see him again before the show is done.

But the hard time jump from the break up to Saul's timeline seems to indicate that she's gone for good now. The unspectacular way she just left everything feels more cruel, more real, more bleak than any violent death could have felt. The hole she left behind her really explains the Jimmy to Saul transformation. I love how well written this is and I hate it to the core.

Mike uses the word "Justice" and then assumes Manuel doesn't understand the word, when really it's Mike who doesn't. It’s like with all the loses that he’s experienced already, Kim was the final blow. His brother, Howard, his friend Marco, and finally Kim…all he had left to keep going was the love of the hustle.
    I used to look at Saul like a charismatic person who was direct but after this episode (and the entire series), Saul was the only thing he has left to escape what it was he’s lost. It was heartbreaking realizing that all this time, we were looking at a broken individual….check on your friends. Smh. Bravo 👏🏾
    Also, the convo between Manuel and Mike at the end was reinforcement for his relationship with Jesse I think. The scene in BB where Max was shooting at Gus’ people, I think this part was part of the reason Mike saved Jesse from getting killed.

    I don’t know if Mike’s revenge against the cops who killed his son is something to be judged in the same light as carrying out similar acts of violence he commits against others. In all fairness, most parents would inevitably feel a desire for retribution or revenge against the people who murdered their offspring. It doesn’t necessarily dictate their path in life beyond that. In Mike’s case, it’s something more within him that pushed him down that path, not just his son’s death or the revenge he exacted, in my opinion. It's interesting comparing Jimmy's transformation into Saul with Walt's transformation into "Heisenberg". When Walt finally finishes his transformation into Heisenberg in Season 5 (at least in my opinion that's when you first see him assume the role fully), it's terrifying. He's an absolute monster and is terrifying to watch. When Jimmy becomes Saul properly for the first time (at the beginning of Season 5) it's just sad. It's heartbreaking watching this hollow man walking around in Jimmy's skin, and so now when I watch Breaking Bad and I see Saul it just makes me sad to see who Jimmy became. It's an interesting point of comparison I feel, seeing how these characters change into their personas and how those personas take them over.

    • @littlechickeyhudak
      @littlechickeyhudak 2 года назад

      I also think there's some interesting parallels in how Heisenberg is basially Walt's ideal version of himself. It's, at least in part, who he wanted to be from pretty early on. Saul on the otherhand is a complete perversion of Jimmy who appeared and grew because of his own mistakes and reinforced by people's opinion of him. Everyone in Jimmy's life sees him as the kind of person that Saul is when he doesn't necessarily want to be like that, and everybody in Walt's life sees him as someone incapable of Heisenberg's actions (like doubting the lengths he'll go to to preserve himself and his empire), even though that's exactly who he is and wants to be.

    I also think Gus walking away from the wine guy had another context in that Gus was interested, but unlike Saul and Walter, he’s strong enough to walk away and is not willing to risk getting an innocent caught up. The fact that he was just sitting in the spot where Max was killed was fresh in his mind.

    Better Call Saul is a show that is so weird, because it doesnt have the traditional ending.
    The main continuity of Better Call Saul essentially ends with his breakup with Kim.
    Thats the ending of the show.
    Then we pick up YEARS later and get to see the ending of the character after an entire other show has passed.
    Its like being kicked in the stomach seeing it.
    We were so caught up, waiting for Jimmy to become Saul, that we didnt even notice it had already happened.

    I thought she would dump him in season 1. Kim was always out of Jimmy's league. So thinking I was wrong, it took us all these seasons to get to what I thought would be fireworks. There was some of that, for sure, but you're right. Now it's just over. Saul Goodman had a hot gf who dumped him and that's why he's like that now. If you told me that was the conclusion years ago I may not have watched at all.

    as heartbreaking as this episode is, I'm a LITTLE disappointed that the show didn't cover ALL of it's bases.
    we didn't see exactly how Jimmy ended up getting the inflatable statue of liberty from the Kettlemans and we don't know how he knows how the vacuum cleaner guy works.
    It could be that these things are explained in the coming episodes, but still. For now I guess we'll just have to fill in the gaps with our imagination.

    • @AdamMovs
      @AdamMovs  2 года назад +16

      Those things are pretty much answered in the prior season 6 episodes. They got the inflatable statue of Liberty from the Kettlemans - that's presumably the whole story there. Saul figured out how the disappearer worked after he bought Caldera's black book and passively witnessed him disappear. He bought the new car based on what Kim said earlier in the season... idk I feel there's not much to add by showing it, we've been given all the information.

    • @TomboTime
      @TomboTime 2 года назад +2

      Yeah. It doesn't make or break the episode for me. It just would have been cool to see.
      But it's not unreasonable to assume that Saul buys the statue from the kettlemens (perhaps after they're investigated by the IRS after a . . . . Ahem . . . anonymous tip).
      And it's reasonable to assume he figured out how the vacuum cleaner guy works by decoding the black book

    Disagree with Turning Saul into most tragic character of the universe.
    That title easily belongs to Jesse. He had it the worst out of anyone

    • @littlechickeyhudak
      @littlechickeyhudak 2 года назад

      I think their tragedies are very different and hard to compare. Jesse is more tragic in how he's a victim of everyone around him, especially his mentor, but Saul is more tragic in how we know the potential and heart that Jimmy has somewhere inside of him that has been repressed and silenced, and how the once well-meaning man has been corrupted into a scummy, selfish lawyer
