Howard is the only one of the main characters to seek out a therapist and work on himself. He doesn't give up on his troubled marriage, he tries to do right by Jimmy and this is how he's rewarded. Homie did NOT deserve that death which makes it all the more shocking.
One of the reasons Jimmy hates Howard is because Howard rectified his inner self and unburdened himself of the guilt of Chuck's death while Jimmy had refused to process those emotions. He hated Howard for not wallowing in self pity and depression anymore.
Howard was the better version of Jimmy, what he always wanted to be. Just as gifted with natural charisma, but choosing the path of using his "powers" for good while not getting dragged down by the problems that were thrown his way. He's the foil to slipping Jimmy.
@@red_calla_lily Howard was not using his powers for the good either. Just being a corporate chill. Also manipulating with his charisma those ederly folks to keep the Sandpiper case longer so the firm could collect more for them. He was a ruthless greedy narcissistic asshole. But he didn't deserve that death.
Fun fact: This was not scripted. The actor who plays lalo just randomly shows up on set and murders the actor who plays Howard. This is why bob and rhaes reactions are so genuine.
I actually felt like crying when you saw Howard in his grave because he really didn’t deserve it. Never felt that way over a fictional character before
Howard's death was so affecting because by this point in the series you come to realise he's the most moral main character in BCS. He might appear like a sleazy lawyer, but he always tries to do the right thing, he has empathy for other people, and he's really just a good guy who wants to be liked.
@judefischer3821 yeah Howard is definitely a bit of a sleazy lawyer, but among the rest of the cast, he's practically perfect. I think that absolutely makes for better characters, and it really drives home the fact that Howard absolutely did nothing to deserve it without trying to make him morally upstanding.
Yeah, honestly he might be a bit of a dick sometimes but hes just a normal, nice, innocent, uninvolved person. He had no part in anything of that and i dont even think he deserved saul and kims devious plot
I love how this show changes your feelings towards Howard Hamlin. At first you despise him just like Jimmy & Kim. Later on, you empathize with him and wish he had a better fate. This show has such a talented group of writers, I’m gonna miss it.
I just rewatched the entire series and you are totally right. Howard isn't that great of a guy but you realize most of it is Chuck's fault but the showrunners completely manipulate the audience into thinking he's an asshole. THEN, when you start to sympathize with him... BAM
@@austinhernandez2716 You got a point there, at first I thought he was the generic blonde a-hole who will be important in Saul's character arc and will have some kind of redemption, but in an old fashioned Br Ba way, this show took it further, turning point for me was when they revealed Chuck was the one messing with Jimmy.
I love the reactions from the actors on the situation. Patrick: I've known about it for 6 months. Rhea: OH MY GOD!?!? Tony: I didn't think it would come to this, but here it is And then Bob: This should have happened sooner.
I can't believe they actually shot Howard's actor in the head for this scene. The genuine reactions to seeing their coworker die in front of them, that can't be replicated. Bravo, Vince!
The fact that Rhea, Bob and Patrick actually lived together during filming and used part of their free time to rehearse and develop the scripts really made their scenes together shine.
My theory is that they probably did that for legal reasons - considering covid restrictions meant people who didn't live together couldn't be in the same room etc.
I really loved the conversation they had before Lalo came in. Howard was unloading on them, confronting them with the exact reasons why they were torturing him and making it clear how childishly petty they were being. I'd like to think that those words actually hit the two of them after the bullet hit Howard.
Howard wasn't ever a "good guy" but he was NEVER wrong. He knew what they were up to in all of the seasons, it was just too crazy to sound believable. And much like all of Jimmy and Kim's decisions, someone else paid the price.
It hit Kim hard It was the wake up call she needed to finally leave Jimmy Jimmy however was in denial and kept being in denial until he got arrested and finally admitted to everything Kim accepted things needed to change, while Jimmy didn't want to and acted like it was normal and totally not his fault
@@Matisyahuwuwhy was Howard never a "good guy"? He did so much for them and put up with a lot of their schemes. Im not bothered enough to write it all out yet you could probably find it somewhere in the comments
@@rockinrobert100 probably they let the Howard's actor knowing before. So when he reached this scene he could acting normally. I mean not normally, but more alive than normal. That was a scene when he face again Saul. But basically he had to be the normal asshole he used to be, even minutes before he died.
Patrick, in case you ever see this, I liked Howard from the beginning. The second it was revealed that Chuck was the actual reason why Jimmy didn't get hired on at HHM as a lawyer, I was like, "You know? Howards actually a good and likeable guy. Not near the arrogant prick they tried to make him out to be at first". You became one of my favorite actors from the show. I couldn't imagine the show without you. Broke my heart that you got killed off like that. Bravo, Patrick!
I think Jimmy misplaced a lot of anger towards Howard that was meant for Chuck. Because Chuck used Howard to be the fall guy in why Jimmy was not hired for HHM. He manipulated both Chuck and Howard. Steering Howard to make decisions, which Howard knew were not right but felt compelled to go with since he looked up to Chuck as a mentor (mirroring how Jimmy looked up to Chuck).By the time the truth came out, it was hard for Jimmy to see Howard as anything other than Chuck's accomplice, when in reality he had also been used by Chuck.
I completely agree. I started off thinking he was a dick but as soon as the Chuck reveal happened my opinion of Howard completely flipped. I mean he still had done a few dickish things but he really had no true ill-will towards Jimmy and was just playing in Chuck's court.
as heartbreaking as this scene is, it still makes me feel good that they had fun filming it. i love the fact they are all friends in real life, behind the scenes. damn i’m going to miss this show!!!!! ughhh…..
what’s cool is that howard never really changes throughout the series - only our perception does. he’s always been a standup guy since the beginning but because we were in jimmys POV he looked like an ass.
He did actually change a bit after Chuck's death. His feelings of guilt affected him and he had to deal with that. After seeking therapy he became a noticeably kinder and calmer person. He dealt with his grief, realized he wasn't truly at fault, and grew as a person. Basically the opposite of Jimmy, who never dealt with his grief or his guilt, and only became a worse person.
So we’re just going to ignore that he withheld money from elderly people, telling them it was in their best interest to wait, and knowing that many of not all of them would be dead by the time the case was over. All so that he could fuel his ego and ‘win’ against the other law firm, while making more money for his greedy ass firm. Yeah, great guy.
This death along with Hank's, was the most surprisingly and impactful to me. These are characters that seem like they have the "plot armor", or "main character armor", that you would believe they would never be killed. That is was makes it so impactful seeing these characters die. Especially Howard, since he was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time. I give kudos to all involved in these shows as they really hit you hard, and it's tough (at least for me) to have a show impact you personally.
This one was really traumatic for me because I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the entire scheme that Jimmy and Kim were pulling on him was for nothing. No pay off, the guy is just dead.
Probably the most realistic Better Call Saul scene. Howard is gone just 20 seconds after Lalo enters. Lalo doesn’t even let him finish his sentence before he blows his brains out. The acting is phenomenal too. It feels like a very high quality live leak. It’s that good!
One of the most memorable scenes from both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.. to me Howard's death, and unceremonious burial, was around the same level of heartbreaking as Hank's.
The hardest death for me to accept was Chuck. I spent all that time between seasons hoping it was a dream, or he got out, or something happened other than him dying.
Howard’s death was probably the most harrowing death in the Breaking Bad universe since it wasn’t like he had it coming nor was it inevitable that he *had* to die. It was just him being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Something I noticed is even though Howard is there to confront Kim and Jimmy, when Lalo comes in, its subtle but Howard goes 'Whats this about' showimg actual concern for them, before he himself dies.
Apparently, his last line of dialog was supposed to be something along the lines of "There's really no need to hurt them." Even after all they did to Howard, he was still going to stand up for them when he suspected they were in deeper than they expected.
@@CosmicWaltz7Oh my God. That breaks my heart. Even in that moment of righteous anger, he still doesn’t want them to be harmed. Poor, decent, humane Howard.
I actually immediately started bawling as soon as the gunshot occurred. I really loved Howard by the end of the show, and in turn felt near hatred for Saul and Kim. That shot to the head cemented how horrible those two had become, that an innocent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time because of them had to die.
@@CameronsCars for one, he couldn't choose who he was born to or how he was raised. And if you could, you'd help your son succeed too. Second, he did have his douche moments, I don't think there's much debate for that, but he did turn over a new leaf and tried to right his wrongs later. Overall, he was mostly loyal to his mentor and friend, Chuck, until it got out of control, and then tried to reconcile with Jimmy and Kim, but they were hell bent on using him has a scapegoat for all of their pent up frustration and need for sadistic excitement.
@@CameronsCarsyea bc sending someone to doc review and following chucks decision bc he is a huge part of the company warrants what they did to him. Howard wanted to hire Jimmy to he only didn’t bc Chuck told him he couldn’t.
It's such a strange dynamic, emotionally and morally. Do we want Jimmy and Kim to feel terrible? Do we want to say that they deserved this? The only way for them to pay any kind of emotional penance is if they aren't completely cold-hearted.
Tony Dalton is such a great actor. Tony deserves a ton of respect for how incredible he was in that scene. A silent, simple, cold-blooded killer. Lalo enters the room, barely says anything but controls everything and gives an amazing send off to a great character. Amazing show. I'm going to miss that entire world.
Lalo was one of the all time great TV villains. The first time I watched BCS through season 5, I couldn't wait for him to be killed. But the second time I watched the first five seasons, I appreciated how good he was as a character. Dalton absolutely nailed that role.
What a not class act, nice little sneak diss in there Fabian. We paid you what you’re worth little man, don’t bite the hand that squeeze tube feeds your pretty blonde mouth. Thouth.
That part where Kim and him are walking to the conference room, where his face is stoic toward Kim then he blasts the smile as he goes through the door...He reminded me of Homelander...:0
I'm convinced Jimmy is going to prison. Listen to Bob's words carefully. He mentions consequences. This week's episode had Jimmy throwing the ball at his office wall until the pillar fell off, in his direction. The pillars of justice if you will. There's always some foreshadowing taking place in a good story. I think these are clues to how it's going to end.
Then in the final episode, we get to see Jimmy get out of prison after years where he's old and outside the prison Kim is waiting to greet him and then they go do some crazy sh*t in the bar scamming people the end.
@@chananabips7009 they obviously still have affection for each other but I think too much bad shit has gone down between them for there to be a reuniting at the end. Kim is on the path to redemption, gene is running away from his sins
If you had told me at the beginning of the show that eventually I'd be crying over Howard I wouldn't haven't believed you. That episode and the aftermath of Howard's death are so incredibly horrifying and tragic. The show really smacks you in the face with how unrelentingly they show the gut-wrenching consequences of Jimmy and Kim's behavior. Howard goes from a guy you barely care about, to someone you actively dislike, and finally to one of the most sympathetic and tragic characters in the whole story and someone you genuinely admire. The whole show is beautifully written, but thinking about Howard still gets me choked up.
Here is what broke my heart even more. Howard and Lalo being buried together. Howard deserves much better than being buried inside the same grave as his killer. Such a tragic character.
for people that are wondering.... yes, both are in breaking bad, except when walt and jesse blow up the lab the only time howard is mentioned is by hank as 1 of 2 dead bodies kind of disturbing as hank and steve were buried in almost the same exact way as howard and lalo, same size burial and everything. it was crazy
@@tros_725I believe the 2 bodies were the men walt killed. Lalo/howard were under a few feet of concrete in contrast. There's debates you can find online about this.
This scene will keep haunting me no matter how many times I see it. It's so raw, so shocking, so unexpected, and so fast! Everything that happened to Howard made us all root for the guy when it was way too late. He didn't deserve any of it. I think he was the only character with at least some will to become a better person eventually, to keep working on himself unlike any of the other characters on BCS and BB. I'm glad at least his wife got to know the truth instead of thinking he just committed suicide and was a drug addict. Great redemption arc and development. Amazing
@@davidshatto7604 Just because she feels guilty doesn't mean she wants to be better. The only thing we've seen her see is write an affidavit, which we know she knows us worthless without a body or proof. She's essentially just trying to make herself feel better since she can't right her wrongs.
they couldn't have used howard any better in the show, for me, howard's death will always be what drove kim away and pushed jimmy to fuly become saul goodman. I also love how the remorse of kim over the death of howard is playing out in the last episodes. It has been such an integrate part of the overall story and all the weight is felt because of Patrick's awesome preformance! Man I even felt guilty in hindsight laughing at the "howie" scene with the prostitutes because of what happened.
I have to admit, when they announced Better Call Saul I was a bit puzzled as to why they chose him. I thought they'd go with the Fring story, but I've been overwhelmed at how good BCS is. The cinematography in the first season made my mouth drop open. My partner is an editor for Netflix/TV and she also found this series incredible. Its just such a gift to us all, especially after the lukewarm El Camino.
It is. It is clearly better than Breaking Bad to me. I am now trying to decide whether it is better than The Wire, which I have considered to be the greatest TV show ever since I saw it about 17 years ago. I think I will have to rewatch both back-to-back. But if BCS isn't the best TV show I've ever watched, it is 2nd best. Just an absolute triumph of writing, directing, acting and cinematography.
Howard's death was one of the most shocking twists I've ever seen on a show, especially because it felt like it made sense and was organic and wasn't just out of nowhere with the intention to shock.
That's been one of the great strengths of BB and BCS in my opinion. The writers are really good at taking two seemingly unrelated story elements at the start and building up to an explosive clash between the two later on. It's very much like when Hank crossed paths with Uncle Jack in BB, but it's still It's own thing and feels completely organic because you can follow the events that led up to the clash.
Or how they absolutely blew it out of the water with introducing Hector so early on and then Fring’s plot line being so seemingly separate like they would never cross paths
I really started to identify with Howard during BCS because I also had issues with depression and thinking low of myself. As KIK01 has already mentioned in the comments here, he is the only character in the show who has worked on himself and tried to be a better person and tried to make up for his mistakes. Therefore, Howard is my favourite character on the show and seeing him facing such a terrible fate, broke literally my heart. I cried my eyes out during that episode but nontheless I carry Howards spirit in my heart: debt, depression, relationships falling apart - no matter what you're facing, you'll land on your feet. I think he is a role model to us all ❤ I apologise for my English on this point, I'm from Germany and English is not my mother tongue 😊
I like how Lalo doesn't even give the audience to have a moment either here. The viewers are in the same boat as Jim and Kim where we were really not expecting such a good character to have such a disposable death. He just vanishes in a second. And you aren't given a moment to process it properly and it is straight into more cartel business. When it happened I was in complete shock. Such a great turning point for the show
I'm always so impressed with method actors. It's a shame he was functionally deaf for a few days after, but I couldn't even tell that they had Tony Dalton shoot through his ear rather than his temple. Movie magic!
It's not really that impressive if you know Vince Gilligan only casted Patrick Fabian for his famous ability to absorb multiple close-range gunshot wounds on camera. (It's an old circus trick passed down from generation to generation in the Fabian household.)
@@ericmpereira Patrick is a method actor who frequently shot himself between takes to get into character. He really wanted to nail the delivery of Howard's now-legendary line, "OW! Lalo, why did you shoot me in the head like that you FUCK???"
I kept replaying the scene in my head for like two or three days after I watched that episode. Completely unexpected and I felt so bad for Howard, he was not in the "Game" and did not deserve it at all. It truly shows the level of danger being in the "Game" brings, even if you are not in it, you never know how close it is to you. We got to see Howard's progression, getting somewhat attached to him, and just like that, in a blink he's done. He was a nobody to Lalo, just in the way of his goals. Wrong place wrong time. The sad part, think of how often things like this happen in real life to people around the world. This show is a masterpiece.
Only in a perfect world can you get such talented actors, writers, and producers all together on one show. Blessed to have gotten the opportunity to watch this "live."
I absolutely love how healthy and supportive this work environment seems, really a stark contrast to how most of the film industry operates. And it pays off, you don't need to be an asshole to bring out the best in your actors (and everyone else involved too)
My thoughts too! Vince Gilligan is such a nice guy. Some directors get away with being abusive assholes just because they created a blockbuster hit. But Vince is different. Being a nice boss and a nice person all around is such a nice boost to workplace morale. Bravo Vince!
In every interview I have seen with Vince Gilligan, he has always praised the people around him and talks about how much better it was because he listened to them. I think he set the tone for the different people who directed the individual episodes and it brought out the best in everyone on both sides of the camera.
@@njcurmudgeon exactly, he trusts and respects the people that work for him, and that creates an environment where writers can freely bounce ideas off each other, that way creativity can really thrive and you can feel the passion and excitement from the people involved even just watching the show
Breaking Bad had some of the most intense shocking scenes i’ve ever seen in any film/tv ever, Janes death, Walt running over the killers with his car, the crawl space, the child murder after the train heist, Hank finding out it was Walt all along, the Nazis showing up in the desert, Hanks death, so many scenes where i was literally shouting at the screen, after it ended i thought no other film or show will produce this feeling again where i’m completely on the edge of my seat like i’m actually there with the characters in those intense scenes, and then Better Call Saul came along. I don’t think i’ve ever in my entire life experienced the shock that was seeing Howard get shot in the head, by far the most shocking scene i’ve ever seen in any film or show. It really felt like witnessing a loved one being murdered in front of you, the entire day after i saw this episode i couldn’t get it out my head and how dark and unfair what happened was. It’s crazy that i used to like Lalo in a bad guy but he’s charming kind of way he was fun to watch but after this i never wanted a character to suffer so bad, what a truly evil human being. The writing of this show and Breaking Bad is simply out of this world, the ability to make audiences literally shout at the screen in shock is something unbelievably rare and is a testament to how unbelievably smart they are.
The elevator scene at the end of The Departed had a similar initial shock factor, but the after effect of this BCS one was so much more. I sat in silence for a good while at the end of this episode.
It was the same for me! Jaw dropped and speechless after Lalo shot Howard. And was still thinking about it at my workplace the next morning. Same with Nacho's death. Although, Howards death was more shocking, Nacho's death hit me too.
The day after that episode I told my girlfriend I had witnessed the most shocking scene I had ever viewed on TV. That gun went off and I said "holy shit!" so loud I thought I had woke her up. What a scene, just outstanding. And Lalo, what a joy to watch. On the most recent episode of Talking Saul Gould or Gilligan said that Lalo was the happiest character on BCS. Which is true. None of the other individuals in BSC showed joy...but Lalo, that dude was cheerful. Best writing on TV since Mad Men (IMO). Rivals Mad Men.
Damn this just shows how insanely talented Patrick Fabian is as an actor. They never rehearsed the scene and yet he was able to take a bullet to the head like a champ and then just bounce right up. Amazing. Shows the beauty of the breaking bad series and all of its actors.
When Howard says “I’ll land on my feet. I’ll pick myself back up. But you two? You’re soulless.” The perfect hint of optimism that Howard probably will either divorce or fix his marriage and practice law elsewhere. Continue working on himself. Then to not just sprint when Kim and Jimmy told him to and try to talk down Lalo. It was a thoroughly enjoyable ride as a viewer
"Look more dead." LOL. Man, I hate that all this is coming to an end. Another fantastic series just as good and maybe even better than BB. Normally, when there's a spinoff to a hit series, they fail. This was a flying success and I wish somehow they could strike gold with another spinoff from this. What a special combination. With everything from writers, directors, actors, cameras, set design. They have it all. They should be so proud of this.
I feel you on every point here. I actually think BCS is better than BB, as well. Vince Gilligan has said that this is his last foray into the Breaking Bad universe. I cannot WAIT until he announces his next project. He's one of the greatest showrunners and writers of our generation. He's in rare territory with David Chase, David Simon, and Matthew Weiner in my book.
Love how concerned Rhea was that Patrick didn't know he was being killed. 🥰 This ensamble has just been the absolute best, not a weak link anywhere in any of the seasons. That Patrick Fabian got a sort of sendoff in the memorial episode with all the photos taken from his real social media.
I have to say .The acting of Rhea and Bob as two people who saw someone they know personally and emotionally getting his head blown off is very realistic .
This is one of my favorite scenes in BCS. I didn’t expect Howard to die at all, much less so suddenly at the hands of a character not involved with his story at all. Masterful writing
I really love how cool all the cast and crew are on both BCS and BB. I think Vince's ability to make sure all sides of the production are populated with really cool people is what makes these shows special.
Howard was one of the most likable characters in Better Call Saul. His loyalty was towards his fellow partner Chuck and did what he wanted. You can't fault that. Howard possessed all the great qualities and ethics that Kim and Jimmy didn't have and yet was successful. They probably resented that and put a nail in his coffin because of it. The writers although representative of what usually happens true to life where evil people succeed, showed him no mercy whatsoever.
Gotta be honest, i was so invested in the last minutes of this episode that by the time lalo entered the room, chills just went down my spine and for the first time in any movie or series I've ever seen, i felt the terror that he brought on, like i was a character in the scene, the Focus i had over the show at that moment, on top of wearing headphones and disconnecting everything so i can watch it peacefully after a week frustration & waiting , all came by together and made me scream in terror and throwing away my screen so i can stop watching on someone is getting murdered in front of me, my mind went blank for 5 minutes straight, and only after that i came to realization that this is a SHOW, and that was an ACTOR and this entire thing is just a phenomenal writing story that made me feel actually scared and unsafe! Death of howard wasn't like anything I've seen before!
honestly this is an example of how a good death can be good for an actor. howard's character had been sort of lingering after the chuck thing for a while, and that death (along with the scam) cemented him as one of the best characters in the show, and fabian as an incredible actor. if howard had just sort of hung around after the scam being depressed, nobody would really be talking about howard hamlin
This scene was just traumatizing in addition to being heartbreaking as Howard was so convinced that he could turn his life around and expose these 2 sociopaths. What Jimmy and Kim did to Howard made me start to actively hate them tbh. So glad that we're getting a breakdown of this scene, this is one of the scenes that will become iconic for BCS. Namast3, Howard
In all the shocking scenes of either BCS or BB, this one probably was the biggest gut punch of them all. And so perfectly done. Everyone involved should be showered with awards. Also, Patrick Fabian seems like one of the most fun guys to be around.
I actually lurched forward when that moment happened. So raw and visceral, as BCS never fails to be. Thankful for this magnificent piece of art, though I'm a bit resentful for how my heart has been played with, haha! I'm scared for the final episode!
As much as it must suck to know your character will die and you won't get a chance to play him anymore, it's gotta be worth something to know that the tragedy of your character's death will end up being one of the most harrowing, meaningful, memorable, and talked about moments of the entire show. Talk about going out with a bang. You never fully appreciate the Howard you have until you lose him.
El final de Howard fue muy triste, un gran personaje, pero el cierre que le dan a su historia es tan necesaria para los personajes que es una manera increíble en cómo lo manejaron los escritores,. Qué buena serie.
When I first saw the scene I freaked out for sure. Seeing this video really makes me love this show even more because of how enthusiastic all the actors seem to be.
I love how they used foreshadowing in this scene using the candle when Howard entered to make us think that maybe that was Lalo, but i was sort of relieved when i saw Howard instead. But seeing the candle a second time, when i saw it flicker, i knew then that it was Lalo.
Patrick is awesome!! He went to Penn State near where I live. I remember him from Saved By The Bell College Years as Professor Lasky and I am so glad he finally caught this huge break and landed this role as Howard because he totally KILLED it. Howard and Chuck and Kim and Nacho made BCS a truly amazing and different experience from BrBa while still being the same series.
This scene is probably the only time I've *yelled* at a show. It was just so good, and to a character so undeserving of it. Knowing how they pulled it off, they definitely landed what they were going for.
So sweet of Rhea to be concerned that Patrick Fabian might not have known that his character was ending. It just speaks to what everyone says about her being a thoughtful & gracious person.
Well, this was an excellently done scene. I didn't expect Howard to die like that . I didn't expect him to die at all. And then Kim and Jimmy are in shock and Lalo is just being Lalo. They're cleaning up all the Characters who won't be in Breaking Bad and they are killing a lot of them. I like the fact that a lot of this is about Gene, what happens to hm and Kim and what happens to her. One more episode to go. .
I expected that he would get killed by Lalo in a wrong time wrong place scenario and it STILL shocked me. The timing of him being so low in his life and expressing his plan of revenge, and THEN he dies?! Oh it killed me. Amazing writing
This was so SO shocking when it happened. I think I just stared, open-mouthed (ironically) at my TV for a full 2 minutes in disbelief. Just amazing writing, storytelling (in constructing all the characters & their motivations to get us to that moment over 6 seasons), acting, direction - ALL of it. 11 out of 10. Thank you to everyone involved. The whole show is a masterpiece. 👏👏👏👏👏
I’ve accepted I’m going to cry watching the final episode 😭😭 this show has been AMAZING from the start. Im beyond sad to see BCS end. Can’t remember when I last felt this way about a tv show..it really is a testament to how special the show is
Nah, that was misreported. They shot him through his ear. You can get a lot of blood out of an ear and cosmetic surgery can fix them up really good so that's usually how they do it nowadays when actors like Patrick are dedicated to the realism
Such a cool character. The entire show you’re supposed to hate him but never really get a bad vibe from him either. And when he gets killed it makes you reflect on your dislike of him and honestly there’s not much reason to
Uh, you’re definitely not “supposed” to hate him for the entire show. By the time you get to season 4, he starts becoming the most obviously sympathetic character. I don’t really get the Howard hate post-season 1.
@@BareBandSubscription that’s the point of the show tho…even though Jimmy is a terrible person you want to side with him, even through his scams. And Howard fits right into that. @@MayFlwr No. You’re not obligated to root for the protagonists when they’re wrong. The second Jimmy dumped his burden of guilt over Chuck’s death onto Howard’s shoulders, that was it for me. Nearly everything he does toward Howard after that was a clear “nope” from me.
This video is WONDERFULLY edited - moments like 9:24 seem to me like obvious things to do with a video that dives deep on a scene, but for whatever reason it's not common to see this kind of visual punctuation used to really explain & heighten the point that the speaker is making That's just one great example, but this video is so full of great editing choices that I could make my own video exactly like this explaining why it does its job so perfectly (except nowhere as well as this one does haha) Somebody please show this comment to whoever the boss/higher-up is behind this video, just so that the team involved can get the immense credit they deserve from at least one person who has devoured countless hours of content like this over the last decade & considers this video to be truly exceptional (not unlike BB/BBS for TV drama)
It makes me so happy that the actors seem to appreciate that they’re working on a really special project. Patrick Fabian did such a great job, making us dislike Howard and then turn us toward sympathizing with him. I hope we see him in more shows and movies after this!
All the actors are such legends and played their characters to perfection. I got so emotionally invested that this scene left me in utter shock and quite emotional. Just brilliant and my favourite tv series of all time!
Thanks for putting a major spoiler in the first few seconds of the video. I’m so happy a major part of the show got ruined for me just by scrolling past this video.
The character arc was really completed with his death. Not only was there now a forceful way for the torture to stop, but Howard also realized what was going on. That he didn't lose his mind. He was likeable from the start and I couldn't really hate the guy. The evil inside Kim and Bob went hand in hand with their smarts and that culminated in uncalled-for pranks that ultimately took his sanity for no good reason and made him cross paths with a bullet.
What's even more heartbreaking is to see the killer and his victim being buried together in some underground ditch. What a story

One of the reasons Jimmy hates Howard is because Howard rectified his inner self and unburdened himself of the guilt of Chuck's death while Jimmy had refused to process those emotions. He hated Howard for not wallowing in self pity and depression anymore.
Great point, it’s super tragic
Howard was the better version of Jimmy, what he always wanted to be. Just as gifted with natural charisma, but choosing the path of using his "powers" for good while not getting dragged down by the problems that were thrown his way. He's the foil to slipping Jimmy.

Howard's death was so affecting because by this point in the series you come to realise he's the most moral main character in BCS. He might appear like a sleazy lawyer, but he always tries to do the right thing, he has empathy for other people, and he's really just a good guy who wants to be liked.

Preach! I felt the same!

@@DPMusicStudio i hope that's the case. Every character has pretty much a closure now. And the actors are showing the signs of age for any prequel.
Bob comes on screen “frankly I was waiting for this scene for awhile” idk why but that made me laugh, sounded in character 4:04
I love how excited and passionate Patrick is when describing his final few scenes. Phenomenal actor all around!
Rhea should win all awards in the universe!
Easily the breakout star of BCS.
If Rhea doesnt win an Emmy for this i'll riot
@@radicalxg8282 Sadly they would just give it to Zendaya mate.
Better than Aaron, Bob, Anna, or anybody else… except Bryan Cranston, of course.
@@alonsosanchez8776 not Bob tho, Bob is top, the way he plays Jimmy, Saul and Gene is so convincing
In all the shocking scenes of either BCS or BB, this one probably was the biggest gut punch of them all. And so perfectly done. Everyone involved should be showered with awards. Also, Patrick Fabian seems like one of the most fun guys to be around.
love scrolling through my youtube recommendations and seeing a literal spoiler, thanks man.
the reaction was genuine, they actually shot the actor right in front of them
I actually lurched forward when that moment happened. So raw and visceral, as BCS never fails to be. Thankful for this magnificent piece of art, though I'm a bit resentful for how my heart has been played with, haha! I'm scared for the final episode!
Me too! I was so shocked...and then I ended up crying when they buried him with Lalo...I felt so sorry for him 😞
@@FataLenora me, too! How could they bury him with his murderer?! 😞
@@FataLenora I cried for days. So shocking!
I've watched the episode twice and it still spooked me just now.
The feeling of loving Jimmy’s antics at the beginning of the season vs this moment is just something indescribable
This is one of the craziest most memorable scenes I’ve ever seen. Anybody who hasn’t seen this show is really missing out on an amazing moment in TV.
Patrick is awesome!! He went to Penn State near where I live. I remember him from Saved By The Bell College Years as Professor Lasky and I am so glad he finally caught this huge break and landed this role as Howard because he totally KILLED it. Howard and Chuck and Kim and Nacho made BCS a truly amazing and different experience from BrBa while still being the same series.
they try to not spoil it with the title but then the thumbnail is just HOWARD
i adore how much patrick fabian very clearly loves his job
Patrick himself is a nice guy, chatting with extras and asking about their prospects when everyone else just works around them.
Seeing this show, it redefines what a prequel can be. BB will not be the same to me, especially every scene in the Gus meth lab
FUUUUCK I JUST REALIZED THEY'RE BURRIED IN THE LAB 🥺
@@moonlitee bruhhh the fly episode makes sense now
Watching this I realized how much I miss Howard in the show. His death really left a void!
This scene is probably the only time I've *yelled* at a show. It was just so good, and to a character so undeserving of it. Knowing how they pulled it off, they definitely landed what they were going for.
So sweet of Rhea to be concerned that Patrick Fabian might not have known that his character was ending.
It just speaks to what everyone says about her being a thoughtful & gracious person.
the entire cast and the writers are incredible people, love em.
To think most of these later seasons were based on one random one-liner Saul had in Breaking Bad is just wild
The crazy thing is not only that they're all incredible actors but they seem even nicer human beings
Just wanted to comment and say your thumbnail alone spoiled this huge moment in the show for me and I will never forgive you.
Exactly the same reaction here buddy.
I’ve accepted I’m going to cry watching the final episode 😭😭 this show has been AMAZING from the start. Im beyond sad to see BCS end. Can’t remember when I last felt this way about a tv show..it really is a testament to how special the show is
End of an era 😔
They actually killed him on scene, to add a realistic reaction of Bob and Rhea
That's true dedication to the craft
!ecniv ovarb
no wonder he had a heart attack
Just saying the want to side with Kim and Jimmy but obviously feeling that Howard is a pretty solid dude is unique for a show
Doc review
@@MayFlwr
No. You’re not obligated to root for the protagonists when they’re wrong. The second Jimmy dumped his burden of guilt over Chuck’s death onto Howard’s shoulders, that was it for me. Nearly everything he does toward Howard after that was a clear “nope” from me.
Yea it was pretty obvious that Howard was getting tortured the whole time. Idk how people rooted for the main two besides some morbid curiosity.
This video is WONDERFULLY edited - moments like 9:24 seem to me like obvious things to do with a video that dives deep on a scene, but for whatever reason it's not common to see this kind of visual punctuation used to really explain & heighten the point that the speaker is making
That's just one great example, but this video is so full of great editing choices that I could make my own video exactly like this explaining why it does its job so perfectly (except nowhere as well as this one does haha)
Somebody please show this comment to whoever the boss/higher-up is behind this video, just so that the team involved can get the immense credit they deserve from at least one person who has devoured countless hours of content like this over the last decade & considers this video to be truly exceptional (not unlike BB/BBS for TV drama)
Great scene. The shot of the flicker of the candle from the slight breeze caused by Lalo entering is perfect.
It makes me so happy that the actors seem to appreciate that they’re working on a really special project. Patrick Fabian did such a great job, making us dislike Howard and then turn us toward sympathizing with him. I hope we see him in more shows and movies after this!
It’s crazy how much this show has changed. It went from this legal dramedy to this darker emotional crime story. It’s great.
Im actually sad that Better call saul is 1 episode away from ending forever
All the actors are such legends and played their characters to perfection. I got so emotionally invested that this scene left me in utter shock and quite emotional. Just brilliant and my favourite tv series of all time!
Thanks for putting a major spoiler in the first few seconds of the video. I’m so happy a major part of the show got ruined for me just by scrolling past this video.
Thanks for the spoiler free thumbnail guys. Very bravo.
One of my biggest questions at the start of BCS was why we never heard of HHM in BB. Asked and answered.
I find it kinda funny that Patrick speaks exactly like Howard outside of the role. I don't know why I assumed his voice was part of the act lol
That candle flicker is haunting.
