I wouldn't say blameless. Kim and Jimmy don't have an adversarial relationship with him for no reason. Chuck might have been pulling the strings, but HHM was still dragging the Sandpiper case beyond necessary. Who knows how many clients would still have another 1-1½ years left? Had they taken the deal, none of this would have happened.

They could have done some other scheme, but they chose Howard. Completely innocent? Hardly. He didn't deserve to die, and maybe he didn't deserve to be humiliated, but that's all the scheme was, humiliation. This is my leading theory too. He knew they would pool all forces around Gus and many more options for him to do stuff become available. I don't think Lalo is there to kill either Saul or Kim. He killed Howard cause he saw his face, he doesn't know who Howard is and he in the next 30 minutes needs to convince Saul to do something. So, intimidation, played his strongest hand straight away.
What he needs Saul for I am not sure. I think it's to get Mike away from Gus or to have Gus move. I am pretty sure Lalo dies to Gus in lab with him shutting off the lights and running for the gun he hid, which is why he counted the steps from that centre point to his gun. But I do not know what other reason Lalo could want with Saul. The only feasible connection to Gus through Saul is Mike and how Lalo would know of that connection is questionable but maybe possible.

    • @recurrenTopology

I didn't see this coming, but it wouldn't have felt right for him to commit suicide. Howard's the only character in the series who actually attempts to deal with his emotions in a healthy way, and while he has struggled with depression, he has put in the necessary work to manage the illness. This is in stark contrast to Chuck, whose pride tragically prevented him from continuing his much needed therapy. I don't think it would have been fair to the character, after showing him diligently and successfully utilizing therapy and meditation, to have him also commit suicide.

Walt: No, no, no, go ahead. Get it off your chest. Go on.

Walt: There's no point. She knows nothing.
Saul: Well, too bad for her then. She's got nothing to trade. I hate to be a downer here, but there are two DEA agents missing, presumed dead. You think the feds are gonna just let that go because you hit the ejector seat? First thing they're gonna do is they'll RICO your wife and kids out of the house. That condo is gone. Your bank account is frozen. Her picture's probably on TV right now next to yours. Who's gonna hire her?
      Walt: Money's no problem.
Saul: Well, I don't mean to contradict you, but getting it to her? Impossible. The feds are just praying that she'll make contact. The Internet, the phones, it's all tapped. Hey, Mike was no dummy. But every time he tried to get his nest egg to his granddaughter, it ended up in Uncle Sam's pockets.
      Walt: So you propose what?
Saul: Stay. Face the music. Hey, I mean how much time do you got left? You walk in with your head held high, you'll be the John Dillinger of the Metropolitan Detention Center. How bad is that? And you bring a barrel full of drug money? Maybe that soothes some troubled waters. Maybe they let your family stay in the house. After all, the house predates the criminal enterprise.

Howard was a good person through and through, he was certainly odd and had his own manipulations, but they were all legal and he never caused any one physical harm. Meanwhile he will forever be remembered as the guy who tanked HHM after his partner died and he became a drug addict, dying in what's probably going to be seen as a drug related homicide so no one is left to care for the firm, leading to him being blamed for the downfall of HHM. Something I noticed watching the final scene: it’s the first time that we actually see Lalo kill someone in cold blood. Every other Lalo kill has been either off-screen (Travelwire employee, body double + wife in Mexico, the 2 border drivers, implied murder of lab worker in Germany) or against Gus’ hitmen who stormed his compound and were actively trying to kill him. It makes Lalo killing Howard that much more brutal and shocking. It reminded me of how in Game of Thrones, Cersei is the only female main character that is never shown nude, only to make the infamous “walk of shame” moment more impactful. Brilliant writing from both shows (except at least BCS can keep up the top-tier writing throughout all its seasons).

    • @mriswith88
      @mriswith88 2 года назад +3

Nice observations! And Lalo's build-up to this brutality is mirrored by Gus's in Breaking Bad. For a while, Gus seems mild-mannered and professional, like someone who never actually gets his own hands dirty. So when he kills Victor in the way that he did, it makes the moment a thousand times more impactful. (And even worse, it makes the threat seem all the more real when Gus threatens to slaughter Walt's entirely family.) So both Lalo and Gus have all these mirrored attributes that make them perfect adversaries for each other. I've never seen more brilliant writing and character development in a TV show than in BB and BCS.

    • @tmalecki1521
      @tmalecki1521 2 года назад +2

This is an amazing observation. I never even thought of this until I read your comment. And it makes absolute sense. We have learned how dangerous and brutal Lalo can be when he needs to be (or wants to be), but the writers/directors have always pulled us away right before Lalo murders someone. We hear details about travelwire dude murder later Thru “Jorge De Guzman’s” court appearance (I think? Could’ve been Mike’s personal investigation too). The body double, all we see is Lalo grab the pair of scissors and tell him to “keep the soul patch.” The 2 guys who were smuggling people across the border…show takes us inside the truck when Lalo kills them….he chops off Casper’s foot in Germany and we can probably assume Lalo finished the job once he got the intel he needed.
as soon as Lalo appeared in the apartment, Howard was dead. But what sickens me is how casually and nonchalantly Lalo is…attaches his silencer to his gun, aims at Howard’s head, pulls the trigger, without a second thought and without a care. He just wants to talk to his lawyers.

Howard, by far, had the saddest death in the entire series, right next to Andrea. He wasn't even in the game like Nacho, nor did he sabotage his own life like Chuck did. He was just in the wrong place at the worst possible time. The scenes of Howard seeing a therapist, of him and his wife talking in their kitchen, and Howard's face showing the disappointment of his wife not wanting to be around him. Both scenes built up so much sympathy for Howard. Even though both scenes weren't long. It made his death hit that much harder to me when Lalo pulled the trigger.
Another thing that lead to Howard's death was Mike ordering his men not to watch low-profile people (Saul and Kim) anymore because they were 100% sure that Salamanca will fall into trap.
Also when Lalo saw the cockroach he immediately thought of Saul because he actually said to Kim that Saul was a cockroach... a survivor.

To me personally, the cliffhanger didn’t bother me at all, and in fact, I thought it was an excellent way to end the episode considering that this conversation between Lalo and Jimmy will take way too long. What would have been offensive however is if the episode just ended on the closeup shot of Jimmy and Kim reacting to Lalo’s entrance, and we don’t even get to see what happened next. That definitely would’ve been infuriating, but thankfully we got a glimpse of what happened, and it was a huge release of tension and horror to end the episode on.

I've been racking my brain trying to stack up all the major character deaths that this franchise has accrued over the course of both "Better Call Saul" and "Breaking Bad" and I've come to the conclusion that the death of Howard Hamlin is easily the most strait up cold blooded of them all. Which is no mean feat.

@@Me-ui1zy It makes me think back to what Mr. Acker said about her when she visits him at night with the alternative houses. She is a bad, amoral person in many ways, like forcing Acker off his land for the sake of an egotistical millionaire banker's call center, and she tries to make herself feel better by dressing herself up as a good person - offering a different house to Acker doesn't change the fact he's being forced out of his home, she starts the pro bono practice soon after Chuck dies, presumably to reassure herself that she's a good person after the role she played in his downfall and death, and she does the same with what they did to Howard, rationalising that he's somehow a terrible person and justifying it because the Sandpiper residents will get their money sooner. She's one of the most crulely amoral characters in the BrBa universe and I don't think most people realised it until this season.

I felt a pit in my stomach when Lalo walked in. When a TV show can make the viewer, certainly a viewer like me, have such a visceral reaction like that, you know it's top tier.
I could gush for hours about how much I loved that final scene, let alone the whole episode. Patrick Fabian's performance, the candle flickering twice, Kim and especially Jimmy's reaction because he's essentially seeing a ghost, it's all fantastic.
But the moment when Lalo shushes Kim and Jimmy and gently says, "Ok, let's talk." in that friendly tone and smiles is one of the most haunting moments I've ever seen in a show.
In that one moment, Lalo shows that he is the epitome of a psychopath. He just executed an innocent man that he didn't know and not only is it no big deal, he can immediately ignore it and move on by turning to Kim and Jimmy and proving his lack of humanity by talking to them as if Howard's dead body isn't there, using the same tone of voice he uses in every other situation and flashing the pair his charming smile.
An absolute monster played to perfection by Tony Dalton and those final two words to end the episode are words I'll never forget. Incredible.
Sorry, I just had to gush, I haven't had the opportunity to yet and I thought here is as good a place as any. Love the reaction as always Brandon, can't wait for the conclusion of this awesome show but hate Vince and Peter for forcing me to. I'm looking forward to your reactions, man, peace ✌

On the last season, when Jimmy went to the desert to pick up Lalo's money and then Kim goes to visit Lalo while he was in jail, Lalo responds to Kim being worried that something might happen to Jimmy that "he is like a cucaracha, a survivor", cucaracha being cockroach in spanish, so that's what the cockroach shot on this episode meant, Lalo remembered Jimmy when he saw it.
Vince Gilligan did it again man.

I knew Kim's and Jimmy's backstabbing bullshit were going to catch up to them in some way. In the latter half of the last season, I started losing empathy for Kim and Jimmy. This feels worse than Nacho dying since Howard was never involved in that crime life. Also for Howard to just die with the other lawyers thinking he had a drug-induced meltdown after his struggles overcoming depression.

Kim’s simple decision to turn her car around might be the most consequential in the entire series. She was literally on the road to greatness; instead her decision ruined a man’s professional life and got him killed, it screwed the Sandpiper clients out of a ton of extra money, and it will give her and Jimmy a lifetime of mental trauma.
    What an unbelievably tragic story.

It’s also a theme with this universe that the more or less innocent people meet untimely and somewhat gruesome ends. All because they were just in the way.
    Jane? Just in the way.
Gale? Just in the way. (Yes I know he was making meth but still)
Hank and Gomez? Just in the way.
    Andrea? Just in the way.
And now Howard. He was just in the way man.

The 2 biggest lessons that I learned from "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" is to be careful about who I associate with and to be clear from anything even remotely shady. All the characters mentioned above could have survived if they hadn't associated themselves with the protagonists and lived their life without getting into unnecessary conflicts over their own egos. Jane was a recovering heroin addict who should have avoided someone like Jesse. Gale should never have been in the business in the first place. Hank and Gomez should have swallowed their pride and gone on with their life without obsessing over catching Heisenberg. Andrea being a single mother should have never been in a relationship with someone as irresponsible as Jesse. Finally, Howard should have just carried on with his life without confronting Jimmy and Kim at their apartment while being under the influence of alcohol. Every little bad decision you make can have devastating consequences.

Jane, gale and Andrea were not innocent, in that they were meth addicts or dealers, even if you liked their characters. Howard and Hank were completely blameless for anything that happened to these characters, and are the true heros of both shows.
