    What's most tragic about this whole thing is that Howard died never knowing the truth: he was NOT responsible for driving Chuck to suicide! Jimmy had THREE seasons to tell him the truth. "It was me! I spilled Chuck's condition to the insurance company! I knew they would cancel the malpractice insurance! I knew it would compromise his chances of remaining a lawyer!" And yet he didn't even bother!

    • @ForcesInMotion
      @ForcesInMotion 6 месяцев назад +1

      While it's true that Jimmy's leaking info about his brother to the insurance company was damaging to Chuck, I think placing total blame for Chuck's suicide on Jimmy (as you write, ""It was me!["]) is exaggerated and unfair. It was one contributing factor among many. Yes, Jimmy's actions resulted in the meeting Chuck & Howard had w/ the insurance folks where Chuck wouldn't compromise (and he could've), putting Howard in an awkward position. But at the same time, did Howard really have to kick Chuck out of the firm right then? Doesn't seem like it. In the end, Chuck was a very sick man w/ an inordinate amount of problems eating away at him. Mostly self inflicted, on top of the very sad mental illness. Jimmy wasn't to blame for Chuck's suicide. Howard wasn't to blame for Chuck's suicide. Hell, Rebecca wasn't to blame for Chuck's suicide. I honestly think that not just in this show, but in real life, if a person kills themselves there's almost never anyone else to blame. Not completely, anyway. Unless it's some kind of freakish situation; like a captive in war being held in horrific/torturous conditions knowing there's no chance at escape. This wasn't one of those situations. Chuck killed himself. And it's just sad.

    Your comment about Lalo being treated as a supernatural being in the show is so spot on lol, the way that candle flickered so ominously it felt like a demon is entering the room. The way characters even utter his full name throughout the show with such gravitas, “Lalo Salamanca”, as if he’s otherworldly. Plus for Jimmy here he’s literally seeing a ghost walk in the door in his mind since he thinks he’s dead.

    In season 4, Howard tells Jimmy about his insomnia, and how he wouldn't wish it on his worst enemy.

      I would still give Ozymandias the edge, simply because it stars out with the huge, shocking (but inevitable in retrospect) death, and then the whole rest of the episode shows Walt’s entire world collapsing around him as the consequences of everything he’s done come home to roost, while this one ends with the shocking death and everyone just stunned speechless, and we have to wait to next episode to see Jimmy & Kim start to experience the fallout from what they’ve done. It’s almost like this episode and the next one together makes up this show’s “Ozymandias”.

    I just realized something.. when jimmy says 'How...' at the end when lalo comes into their house, kim immediately covers for him by saying 'howard, howard' - as if that was what jimmy was attempting to say but couldn't get it all out (as opposed to 'knowing' that lalo was dead because of the 'hit').
    other thing - I swear that the beginning scene with the AV guy was a direct homage to 'Glengarry Glen Ross', an awesome ensemble 1992 film with Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemon and others.. that may just be worth a reaction.
    anyways, yeah this one was rough.. howard definitely did not deserve it. killed (amongst other things) because lalo noticed a cockroach at the beginning and got an idea.

    • @hbk314
      @hbk314 6 месяцев назад

      I don't really think that's the case. I think it was just Kim urgently trying to get Howard to understand how serious the situation was.
      Kim was told by an ADA that Lalo was dead. It wasn't exactly a secret that the attack on his house happened, and it wouldn't be suspicious for a shady lawyer to have heard about it.

    • @gregmattson2238
      @gregmattson2238 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@hbk314 I think it's both. Lalo was full of suspicion that jimmy wasn't telling the truth earlier - and the implication of 'how..' is 'how could you possibly be alive' further implying that he was in the know of the plot in the hit. The fear in his eyes further suggests this, that he has a reason for his fear - his guilt. And Kim repeats it three times, first how..ard (with a pause) then howard, then HOWARD. you need to leave.
      I also think that breaking bad confirms jimmy's need to cover this up with him claiming over and over it was ignacio, not him.

Gotta say, I didn't get the feeling AT ALL that Kim and/or Jimmy were suppressing laughter, or in any way enjoying listening to Howard in that scene. There was simply nothing for them to say. What could they say? They had to keep the lie going. Their actions led to Howard's murder and they have to live with that. the accumulation of factors and feelings on this final scene is priceless. You have Lalo being alive (which Jimmy did not know), the culmination of Howard's "prank" altho it was way more than a prank, the fact Howard is breaking his politeness and protocol to express his "doneness" with them and the tension of the lie that may come out on their conversation...you think they can't get any stronger with the drama since it's already a confrontation point almost climaxy... until lalo cames... and it's like both dramas colide into one of the most unexpected and not deserved deaths of all BB universe (climax got climaxier basically)
    The fact they put the karma of what they were doing into Howard and not them is in terms of script trully beautiful, since Jimmy has little contience to feel remorse and Kim was so sure about the perfection of the plan in terms of no one ever being able to find out, except for Howard, who, if continued to acuse them would just get more suspicion on himself, they were fearless about Howy coming in to incriminate them, the guilt was inconceivable at the point these two got. But they did not aim to kill him or make any phisical damage at all ever.. so Lalo coming in as the Karma bearer(without even knowing it and being the bad guy he is), did the one thing that seemed imposible at this point of the series (im sure based on your disagreeing with teir new dinamic as a couple, plotting against Howard felt it similar) he made them regret his choices and forget about all the "fun" as they call it.
    which to me is very jsutified. Rigid correct people get the thrill when they get their first chance to be bad, as in kids from religious families getting rebel.. that's why i like her construction aswell, its real, like you just get it, she is in love, she wants to let him be himself and wants to participate at the same time as to try herself now that she is not obligated to be bad as with her mom, she is choosing to "try" and got stuck in the enjoyment of the new experience.
    Oh man... we're almost at the end but i'm so greatful you got to this epidose as fast as you did since, as you may understand now, im sure EVERYONE WAS DYING TO SEE YOU REACT TO THIS ONE!!! thx for your reaction!!
    also.. the candle, if you notice they made a connection when they open the door to Howard, I think Kim is left on the coach and they focus on it as in "blown candle=open door, guys" so the next time the candle appears you go "wait wha? the door?" naah trully art love this series so much im mad at the brilliance, k bye lol

  • @themediater
    @themediater 6 месяцев назад

    The ironic thing about the con here is it only worked because they know Howard is going to not be able to resist the super dramatic outburst during the mediation. I'm fairly sure that if he'd kept quiet and then revealed the evidence he believed he had, that they'd be able to do something retroactively but obviously, because the judge guy wasn't actually in their pocket anyway, the mediation would have gone in their favour. Obviously if he'd kept quiet and then looked at his evidence afterward, it'd have changed but without the public embarrassing outburst and he'd go "ah, they tried to fuck me but I didn't fall for it. Ha".
    So the only way their con works is because they've accurately surmised his personality and vulnerabilities. It's very similar to the Chuck situation both ways, in both cases they are right that Jimmy is to blame in an insanely unbelievable way but in Chucks case, ultimately it was that he didn't want to be seen to have made even a tiny mistake so he blew it up into a career ending thing and in this case Howard blew up his big thing trying to prove that it was Jimmy. Obviously it's a lot more unfair in the latter though.

    Two of the worst things that ever happened on the show were:
    -Andrea being executed by Jack's gang
    -Jimmy conned Irene
    Those two things were some of the most disgusting and despicable actions ever done in the shows...
    And then there's plan and execution. For 7 episodes (counting the finale of S5) we've been watching, whitout a clue, the scam that Jimmyband Kim are pulling.
    For 2 years there were a lot of theories about what would happen and once the season finally aired there was a common feeling: everyone felt absolutely disgusted with Jimmy and Kim. This was the peak because the episode starts with a classical BCS montage happy scam but once it happens you only feel disgust and maybe hatred towards Jimmy and Kim.
    And then boom. Howard's gone.

    I always thought Bob had his heart attack while filming the final scene, but now re-watching this, I think it might have been at the start of the episode where he's running all around the place, panicking, and there's the complicated one-take scene at the park where he's non-stop for like 5 or 10 minutes.

      Bob had an heart attack while filming the first scene of episode 8. You can see that the camera moves from Lalo POV to Jimmy&Kim's one. The crew filmed one POV then they had to move the cameras and the rest of the equipment before filming the other POV so they emptied the room. Patrick, Rhea, Bob and Tony moved into another room, Bob was on an exercise bike in that other room when thing happened. Luckily there were people there who gave him the first help (Rhea and Patrick). We were this close to loosing him, just imagine if he had gone to his dressing room or to the bathroom and not stayed with the other actors...

    before realising the whole scene will end up baaaaad

    Lalo back from his European Vacation, but definitely not National Lampoons! Lalo of course much more devious than Tuco, Eladio and Hector but every bit as ruthless. Doing is Andy Dufresne bit is the sewers. Jimmy assembling his team again of camera guy, sound guy and make up girl. Kim of course doing her Spielberg bit as well. Howard being extra smarmy towards Irene insisting she use the wheelchair. Judge Casimiro gives his spiel, and Howard for once is lost for words, but then Howard uses his info and asks Julie to get the envelope. Great sound of crackling on Kim and Jimmy's mobile as the envelope is being opened and then we see the photos. It's the very same as Chuck, where he was made to look mad in front of everyone. Cliff insists that they settle now or it will cost millions. Kim and Jimmy shagging while Cliff makes his statement of settlement is something else! No live stream for Lalo, but a video for Don Eladio, that was the technology of course in this time period. Gus hiding in clear sight again with his community support and photo ops. Mike warning Fring that Lalo will act, and lets face it Mike is never wrong. When Howard arrives at Jimmy and Kim's he bring the Macallan. Howard of course is genuinely hurt not so much about the Sandpiper case, but because they made him look like a drug addict in his peers eyes. Kim is totally emotionless but Howard gives it to them. Was waiting for Elie to see Lalo appear at the apartment for one of the great jaw dropping scenes form either show. Howard gets brutally whacked by Lalo and, one the great characters from The BBverse is another one the suffer in the Domino Effect. Jimmy and Kim now really do feel for Howard but it's all too late. Another utterly fantastic episode.

    Lalo seeing the cockroach crawling in the sewer is what most likely reminded him of Jimmy and Kim; as this serves as a reference to Season 5 episode "Bagman", where Lalo tells Kim that Jimmy (whilst stranded in the desert) has the survival skills of a cucaracha (Spanish for 'cockroach').

    I do enjoy the parallel in breaking bad and better call Saul of choices and consequences. Inadvertently, it was Walt’s fault why Jane’s dad crashed planes together and caused so much sorrow for Jesse and others. Just like it was inadvertently Kim and Saul’s fault for Howard’s downfall, and being in the position that he was in.

    I think my exact words when this episode ended were "Someone needs to get these sickos off the streets."
    I've seen some big deaths in television and the fan response to Howards murder was legitimately the most raw mourning I've ever seen in a fandom; it was like he was a real person.
    I predicted the Howard twist in Pimento in like the first two episodes and he was my second favorite character until Chuck died (my first) then he became my number one; and I'd watched week to week from the premiere so this episode was difficult.
    My twitter profile picture was literally Hamlindigo Blue for half a year afterwards.

    Heartbreaking and brutal. I can't tell you how much I was seething at and disgusted by Jimmy and Kim's recent behavior, but especially this episode.
    There's speculation that Howard's last line was meant to be something along the lines of "There's no need for violence" or "There's no need for you to hurt them". Either one speaks volumes about his character, that he would try to protect their worthless asses after what they did to him.
    RIP Howard: you might have been an ass at times, but you were a good man doing better. I wish you had lived to sweep the floor with the Goodmans, but this show called Breaking Bad made it impossible.

    First!
    Edited so I don't lose first 😏
    Anyway - after watching the series through for a second time I feel awful for how I felt about Howard. I was sad about his death but didn't originally care for it so much but after watching it through again it makes me mad how Jimmy and Kim treated Howard. Yeah he was a bit of a douche being chucks puppet but he couldn't afford to lose chuck. He really wanted to make things right with Jimmy after chucks death and to see them rip his reputation apart bit by bit, I don't think I can live with myself for being so detached from Howard's good hearted character.
    R.I.P Howard 😢

    In retrospect, there isn't a single actor in all of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul or El Camino, who isn't on their Grade-A acting game.
    I honestly can't think of a single actor's performance, which didn't fit and made me think "Eeh, that's a bit off".
    This show and its cast are masterclass through and through.
    Also, quite funny how you despise Kim and Jimmy so much, it completely escaped you how Howard immediately became a witness, who has to die, as soon as Lalo walked in, and you cheered his appearance!

    • @eliemoses
      @eliemoses  6 месяцев назад +3

  • @saulgoneman
    @saulgoneman 6 месяцев назад

    Personally I wasn't a huge fan of Lalo's plotline throughout season's 5 and 6. He's a well acted, funny character, but his superhuman-ness (and plot armor lets be honest, killing an entire team of "best in the business" hitmen) was a bit much for me, and I was unsure if they could tie him back into the broader plot in a satisfying way. But man, that final scene really paid it off. The fact that Lalo is such an absurdly dangerous character makes the immediate flood of dread so strong when you see Jimmy's reaction. Lalo is fr a demon bringing death and there's no way out.
    Some people think Howard's death was too cheap and convenient, and I can see that angle, but holy shit is it a good scene.

    I actually have a legal question about Jimmy and Kim's sceme: assuming, uh, Lalo didn't happen; what on earth could Howard do legally against them?
    That's what I find kind of genious about the whole Howard scheme. Even if Howard had all the evidence in his hands, what could you charge Jimmy and Kim with legally? What they did was clearly immoral, but I can't think of a criminal or civil charge that would fit. Maybe intentional infliction of emotional distress, possibly defamation (tho, Jimmy and Kim never said anything about Howard, they kind of made him defame himself instead).

    • @eliemoses

      @@eliemosesfor the defamation thing they would need a confession from the Kettlemans, but they are like blackmailed by kim.
      Best thing Howard could have done is maybe a blood/urine test ASAP to check if they find a substance (the one Jimmy used on the photos) in his body and check if its legal or not and if it is what would be its use maybe is a vet drug only...so this may give him a hint on how Jimmy obtained it (through a vet). Another thing is hiring his PI and do its best finding "Genindowski", who is he? Maybe there's a chance that he had legal problems in the past, someone Jimmy assisted? His face might be somewhere.
      Howard may even have his fingerprints on the envelope the fake PI used to put the photos in so if Genindowski has a criminal past those fingerprints may appear somewhere.

    • @hbk314
      @hbk314 6 месяцев назад

      The issue is proving it. Not to say he couldn't eventually get the fake PI, the film crews, Lenny, the vet, etc. on record. It certainly seemed he'd be willing to put in the work to clear his name. It would be quite the web to unweave, though.
