Renton Mike Here! Again tanner Im ex-autobody paint guy, and I have a few tips for your paint technique. FIRST you really need to make sure youre ovelapping your paint strokes 50%. A lot of the time it looks like youre trying to butt up the paint fan pattern. You can get tiger stripes bad like that. Overlap 50%. Also your paint strokes are very slow... speed them up... whether its primer sealer base or clear, ya gotta speed up them strokes. On the FD when you were layin down the clear, thats why you got those gnarly runs. Also with how cold it is up here right now, speeding up your strokes will prevent runs and help cure time alot AND save you on paint. This 22b will turn out great and I can not wait to see it to the end.
@Smeedia yes actually counting your stroke will absolutely help. Painting in these low ass temps is no help at all tho lol. Youre getting it, and the best way to learn is what youre doing! I have massive confidence in you, Tanner!
Totally agree speeding up the strokes with more overlap will give you a more consistent coverage , and a better finish, working in cold conditions are not helping matters. I would definitely see about either hiring or buying some heat lamps rather than having a heater that blows air around that can give you an uneven finish. As always, you’re still doing a great job it’s all a learning curve at the end of the day. PS tip for you put the air hose round your waist as if your Rock climbing , that way you’re not concentrating on the hose that’s in your hand trying not to get it on the paperwork if it’s round your back your left hand is holding it round to the side of your waist. It’s out of the way when you don’t need to worry about it.
With prep work for paint. I always do 2-3 coats of primer. With guide coat on all 3. Use charcoal guide coat, not spray on stuff. It gets into every micro scratch easier. First coat 180 grit. 2nd coat, 180, 320. Then last coat 320, 600 dry then 600 wet. Any micro scratches left, go over with an ultrafine pad. To get an idea of what it’s going to look like when wet, I just go over the panel with a wet rag. You can spot any scratches, imperfections instantly. May have just been that you cut out any sanding. But seems you didn’t sand between final coat of primer and your base coat. If so, you’ll have a very difficult time cut and polishing orange peel out, as a lot of that is actually under the paint. As a few people have mentioned. Speed up your movement with the gun a bit. Keep your distance consistent and it should come out pretty sweet. I’m not a professional, so I still have heaps to learn. But hopefully 2nd try for you it comes out mint.
yo tanner great work love your builds as an auto bodytech for the streaks in the hood i don't remember if you did any filler on the hood or body work but it looks like marks from sanding i would suggest DAing up to 220 all hand blocking marks... high fill primer wont always hide scratches from sandpaper thats just my suggestion if you plan on redoing the hood
Looks great, yeah the hood would bother me too. I wouldn't be to hard on yourself you're doing way more into detail than I would figure the people watching. Can't wait for the end result!
@Smeedia it supposed to be ending soon at least. At least we're used to it. I heard Pensacola FL is looking at 3+ inches of snow so I'm sure they're losing their shit about now
I love ur build, man, keep the good work up 🤙 I was thinking about this build for ur next build. U should do a fa24 swap in a gc8 with va 6 speed or keep the gdb 6 speed for easy wiring job. Keep it simple and custom engine harness and ecu .I wish I could do the build myself.. but life in the way atm 😌 one day it might happen .
It’s hard to see in the video, but the weird spots on the hood look like sanding scratches that weren’t smoothed out before you sprayed color. Your clear also looks like you’ve sprayed too dry. Also I agree with the other commenter who said you’re going too slow and not enough overlap. No shade though man, DIY painting a car is hard AF. Keep at it, you’ll be happy with the result in the end.
Was looking to see if anyone else saw it, zero zero criticism when I say that but definitely needs to be reworked the sand scratches are already showing through, once it shrinks up and cures it’s going to be worse
Going to re sand it, I just find it odd that it never showed up on the guide coat going up to 600 🧐 going to strip it back down and rework it again though
when the blue paint comes out and you start dusting the hood and the music hits I jump on my desk and twerking like that dog meme. This is making me hype. The search continues for a Impreza L. Starting more on my carbon fiber wing project to.
those weird lines look like sanding scratches sometimes these can be hidden by fine dust so you can sand and use guide coat and it wont show up because it full of fine dust and then gets cleaned out either by your prep clean or the paint sinks in as it dry's. very hard to see these in the prep stage best way i have avoided this is to sand clean then apply guide coat again and re sand then prime and check while its wet and still glossy to see if they are still there. sometimes it all good the nit show up once dried and its annoying. shes coming together you may even be able to wet sand those out and re clear and it will hide them enough that you wont notice unless to put your nose on it
Will 100% do this method going forward. I sprayed it down with some air but guessing the dust gets compacted into the sanding area indentations. Steep learning curve with body work and painting. 😅 but only way to get better is more practice 🙌
Charcoal Guide coat when wet sanding definitely helps heaps. You’ll see every tiny imperfection. Always remember as well. If you’re not happy on your final coat. It’s always better doing one more coat of primer to fix something than it is to just send it and put colour on. Once it’s done. You can’t go back easily.
The 22b is turning out awesome i can't wait to see the end result when its running and driving great. It will definitely be a fun as hell daily, and honestly if I had infinite money i would do the same and build my own 22b replica but then go full rally spec on the suspension and wheels, then put in antilag for shits and giggles
@Smeedia I can only imagine, honestly since I own a 2019 Impreza there's very little I can do to it, if I had an older Subaru or a WRX/STI which obviously have a large aftermarket I would want to do all the mods and probably go into debt modding it to go to the Moon XD all jokes a side though I definitely enjoy what I was able to do with my impreza it ain't the fast car on the road but I've definitely made it a fun daily A to B car
The temperature might be the issue. The hood is metal, fenders are fiberglass. It might be the temp of the panels that’s the issue. Just a thought, I’ve never painted a cars so….
Aren't those lines just sanding scratches from the primer? If it bothers you that much just repaint it and make sure to be more consistent in the way you're sanding
First, you need to increase your painting speed. It also looks like your air pressure is too low. If you increase it, atomization and stroke speed should improve. Apply a base coat on the edges first, then overlap paint strokes, as @illegalLettuce mentioned, and then apply a control coat (keep the gun much higher). In a cold environment, you might need to use a fast solvent.
Idk how hot it gets in there w your current heater maybe one or more of those plug in radiators to keep close may help cure or preheat panels not sure i diy painted my hood 2 years ago it came out awful
For the low spot in the left quarter why not build up the fiberglass vs bracing or filler? Also gotta ask…what are your plans for the fuel door? I’d think that area would need to be addressed before getting too far ahead.
I'll like this just for the music choice during the hood priming & painting b-roll alike, it's so much better than the same shit everybody uses like when you transition to that played out beat at about 5:45. I'm assuming the other stuff's from somewhere I suggested but I could be wrong, it sounds like it though. But c'mon dawg, still ain't using masking tape to make a pour lip on the paint can? It's a lot less messy. I'm no body guy and obv the camera isn't quite doing it justice, but it looks like those lines on the hood can be buffed out.
All from the same site 😅 it’s so difficult to find anything decent and usable. Some people are suggesting it could be in the hood itself. So I’m Just going to re sand and paint the whole hood 🫡
OOH Tanner cursed lol keep it up Bro enjoying the content...Do you notice views between different projects???I think you probably get more views on all Subaru content...
@Smeedia don't they usually spray it a little warmer than that? I think it shrinks the paint when the panel is cold and causes a little more orange peel. It looks great though. I've personally noticed when I heat a piece of metal with a heat gun it comes out so smooth, it's crazy.
would also suggest when at the end of a panel, let off the trigger so the gun can breathe. then get back on it. itll help with dry spray on edges. think the other dude in the comments covered everything else

Awesome you have having a crack but paint i would hand to someone else and in a booth as its going to be such a nice car, if it was a junker then yeah who cares. Stick with the mechanical and learn painting on junkers.. this one is 2 nice to learn on !
We should be able to get a solid finish on everything. The only way to get better at this is to keep getting after it. Handing it off to someone else means I gotta pay someone to do something I can learn to do 😅

HAM 😂 dame, that was a good 1. Wasn't expecting that. That first blue stripe of paint, I literally held me breathed with excitement. 👍🏽
@3:38 that is a whole mood - time to shoot color!
The blue looks incredible 😄. Good luck painting the rest of the body
It looks sooooo good getting sprayed 😍
Car is coming out so sick! Don’t lose motivation! Can’t wait to see the final product
Once we’re past this body work stuff I’ll be able to breathe easy again 😂
Take some SEM surfacer in a can and spray on the pinholes and take your finger and smear it in them. Drys decently fast and sands easy.
Paint and body work keeps me from doing a ground up build. Cant wait to see it fully painted.
It is very daunting but once you get going it’s not crazy bad 😅
not that big of a deal . practice on spare panels
This is giving me inspo for the build so much bro!

Lmao I brushed the shit out of it a Month ago 😂
I’ve been making my finger listen to MCR every night now
get more heaters.
Just curious are you going to use a intercooler water sprayer like the original 22b had?
No need for one. Our set up will be far more efficient. We could add one for the fun of it but wouldn’t change temps too much
RIP
Awesome you have having a crack but paint i would hand to someone else and in a booth as its going to be such a nice car, if it was a junker then yeah who cares. Stick with the mechanical and learn painting on junkers.. this one is 2 nice to learn on !
We should be able to get a solid finish on everything. The only way to get better at this is to keep getting after it. Handing it off to someone else means I gotta pay someone to do something I can learn to do 😅
