- This 1969 Chevy C/20 pickup was the score of a lifetime! I bought it sight unseen, and in this video you’ll see me road trip to home for 820 miles through the desolate Mojave Desert. Amboy, Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, all the hot spots. Of course I’ll give you some trivia, history, and abandoned places along the way. And I located a lost WWII airfield!
Speaking of the airfield, check out airfieldsfreem... for the most incredible collection of abandoned airports anywhere. I gave a slightly wrong url in the video.

Is it bad I heard this comments in Dulcich's voice lol
The part you found at 25:00 is a LoveJoy coupling. Used for coupling a motor to a gearbox or pump. It would’ve had a rubber insert between it and another one.
@ericaddison5495 yep! That's exactly what it is. I used to make them! They are a powdered metal construction and are made of iron with graphite and copper infiltrate during the oven process. They aren't the toughest, but are often easily replaced and meant to be the weak link. A neat part with interesting geometry and design.
Yep I came here to say that
Im surprised he didnt know
Old military generators had them too. And being they were probably ran 24/7, it surprising theres not a pile of them
I work on old dye machines that still use them!
The flap on bottom of the back bumper is to keep rocks from kicking up and rocking camper trailers being towed. That’s what they are mainly used for by old guys. Thanks for all the history. You make this old guy feel like a kid again with your road trips. Thanks. I’m jazzed you got a cool and very mint 69.
@@alaskanfam yes !
@@alaskanfam Or to keep rocks off a boat being towed, he said it had a slide in camper on it. The hitch ball on the front bumper is for launching a boat so you can see what you’re doing instead of trying to back in looking around the camper.
The hitch on the front is also used to back a bumper pull camper into campsites.
Brother. Stop letting the hater live rent free in your head and don’t even acknowledge their existence with mentioning them in your videos. It’s kind of a bad look. None the less, you’re real fans and supporters will be pumped for you if you’re happy and excited about whatever car you’re presenting. That’s why we’re here! Another great vid! Cheers buddy!
He uses the haters' BS against them By saying "let's see X amount of Y comment" he's driving up engagement which gets the algortithm excited and that's super smart imo.
Yea I will say I prefer RUclips guys who don’t mention haters. It’s pisses them off more anyway.
I get it if it’s for engagement. It plays more like taunting anyway.

Outstanding video and buy! You are a real automotive treasure, David. Thanks for all you do to share the history of the areas you drive through.
I think the flap under the back of the truck was to prevent rocks from kicking up on the towed camper or boat
You are correct, I’ve seen newer jacked up trucks with them on,and the name on them is “Rock Tamer”
I think he towed a boat as the truck hauled the camper. How would I guess? The hitch with the ball on the front. It's how old timers would back their boats into boat ramps or other tight areas. It makes sense when you have a large camper on the back. I am at the point of putting one on my truck. I have some tight areas to put my trailer in that I have to back up a block in an alley.
No towed camper. The camper was in the bed, mister.
@@Hjerte_Verke right, at some point the previous owner had a slide in camper. The rock guard is for whatever is being towed, camper, boat, whatever. Unless you have a better explanation of what the flap is for? When I was a kid in the 70s, a lot of trucks that bumper towed campers had them.
@@vintagespeedandperformance6615 we always called them West Virginia air brakes !

My algorithm or my phone reading my mind sent me this video. Never heard of David Freiburger, but after watching this episode wow! That front tow ball is a classic old man set-up! I was so jelly at the boat ramp the first time I saw an old guy use one!
Oh, the front tow ball thing is genius.
My father put a front hitch ball on his 67 Impala to make it easer to place his camper at campsites in 1968 or so. i got a lot of ribbing about it whenever i used his car. (his right arm was paralized from a stroke years before so the hitch worked for him).
Grandfather had the hitch ball on the front of his pickup but it was off center towards the passenger so he could see around the camp trailer when hitched to the front
@@TrevorsWorkbenchthat’s next level!
@@TrevorsWorkbench Always wondered why some were offcenter like that .
You brought me back in time with this episode! My grandpa bought that exact truck new when i was 9. I always washed it with him and he took me everywhere with him. He promised me that truck when i was old enough to drive but the year before some drunk driver took the truck and my grandpa from me. Hope you enjoy it as much as the 2 of us did .

Oh one more thing,,,,,,Growing up in Huntington Beach I mowed lawns and hung out of beach blvd looking at muscle cars at the row of dealers. July of 1972 I turned 16 and my folks only had manual trans. I could drive a manual but I was advised to take the test in an automatic. One of my grass cutting customers was Chet Ingersol who owned a used furniture store in Huntington. Mr Ingersol let me borrow his 1969 C20 350 auto and it had a hydraulic tail lift to support the furniture business. David your truck brings back so many memories of getting that license and the freedom I had in my 64 falcon sprint, 260 four speed and a whopping 164 HP. Thanks for the memories.
The three jaw part you found in the desert is one half of a Lovejoy coupling. They are used on machinery to couple an electric motor to its driven component. Both the driver and the driven component, have a three jaw coupling attached to the shafts. A elastomer insert fit between the jaws to prevent metal to metal contact. The one you found has either experienced a catastrophic failure, or was very well worn. Lovejoy couplings have been used for decades on low to moderate horse power equipment. I have been working around industrial equipment for 35 years and they are very common.
You are absolutely correct!
I've also seen huge ones of these on big electric motors to drive a hydraulic pump for big ship cranes etc.
Man, I absolutely love this truck, and I love how you are an old soul that appreciates every little detail. Don't ever sell it, it's history on wheels!
Id wind up leaving this one as is also. Maybe a seat cover, Lloyds full coverage mats, Vega wheel thats it. Love modding everything but this ones just right as is
The device you found at the old airstrip Is what we in industrial maintenance is a love joy coupling commonly used in pumps, fans, blowers, compressors, to isolate or dampen vibration between a motor and pump or other industrial machinery.
Love your show.
Absolutely right. That's a Lovejoy coupling for sure. Let's get Ken's comment upvoted so Freiburger can see the answer to his question!
Oh man... I've seen Freiberger take his sandals off to get in his new truck... this is something special....!
That huge rubber flap is an old school rock guard . Some people used that instead of mud flaps. It's cool. We love the channel. Keep it going, thank you
As a content creator myself, I’m incredibly impressed by the effort you put into capturing detailed shots, using different camera angles, and how well you tell a story! We’re still in the early stages of our RUclips channel, but your videos are a huge inspiration to us. Thank you so much for the good content!
Best regards from us carfreaks here in Norway!
These trucks are way better looking than any squared body. Man I love these road trips, it's like riding with my Pop when I was a kid, he always seemed to know so much about such things, plus he was always pointing out old cars to us.
David, you didn't pick that truck, it picked You ! with all that "old man stuff" on it it knows where it belongs . that truly is a keeper.
I very much doubt that's how it happens.
Maybe I’m getting old, but watching an old guy drive an old truck to look at old stuff, is a good formula for RUclips videos. Congrats on your beautiful pickup truck.
The amount of information that you have stored in your brain, amazes me. Every time I watch your videos, whether it be from the first episode of roadkill to everything or even MotorTrend.
I learn something every time!!!
The best part of this truck is the front hitch ball. I had one on a 76 Chevy short box. Great for backing trailers in tight places. Nice truck.
And he didn't even mention it. I was waiting.
Freiburger, I think I speak for all of your fans when I say we love these kinds of videos. You've been an inspiration to me to one day get out there and do something like this, buy a classic American car, and see this beautiful country and learn about history and new places. I live in Massachusetts and you've inspired me to take my project '69 super bee that hasnt seen the road since 1976 and drive it from Mass back to Michigan to go to the lynch road assembly plant where my super bee was built at 55 years ago. Dave, thank you for always teaching and entertaining us! The world needs more dudes like you!
That big flap in the back and the hitch ball in front looks like someone towed a boat with it. The flap keeps rocks off what you're towing and you use the front hitch to put the trailer in the water or move it easier. Nice truck for a great price !!!

Wow ,David. Another great road trip. Thank you so much for taking me along. And I love that truck. My neighbor has one, in actual better condition, but his is restored and not original. Anyway, what great find. And as for anyone that's hating on you, well tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine. Carry on Dave.
That is a absolutely sweet truck!! They don't exist anymore up here in rust land Canada! I assume the guy that had it hauled a camper and towed a boat behind. The flap on the back was to keep rocks from spraying your trailer as one other guy mentioned in the comments but the trailer hitch under the front bumper is for putting your boat in going forward instead of having to reverse it into the water. 12.5 mpg is really good. My 07 F350 2whd 5.4L ZF6 dually gets 13-14.5 Canadian so that's pretty much what your 12.5 American converts to. Keep on touring, maybe need a good wheeling video at some point with one of your 4X4's!
In Joshua Tree they used to hold turtle races (Using real desert tortises) in early May. I know because at 9 years old I raced my turtle and won $5. For a 9 year in 1959 that was a lot of money!
33:53, you forgot to mention the boat hitch on the front. It was a lot handier to get a boat trailer in the water, especially when the camper was on it.
I did forget that
@@TheDavidFreiburgerand can make for a decent foot step, although you'd want to be wearing your thicker soled sandals! Also another jacking point...anyways, CONGRATS DF, the truck deal happened because as I said when I got your No lowballers shirt, you're a good person 👏

I believe the big mud flap was used when bumper towing a smaller auxiliary vehicle while there was a camper on the bed. It prevented stones from peppering the front of the towed vehicle.
Freiburger, you're a genius! That truck is 10k all day long! 😅

I picked up a 75 C10. Sat in a barn in Montana since 90s when owner (91 years old) passed away. Found all maintenance records in a pouch on back wall of cab. Also had a record of gas mileage (21 mpg on highway probably due to 3.08 rearend). Same color as yours, but has a 250 six and three speed column shift, no options, not even a cab light. Has just over 54k original miles. Tires on it are GR78/15, good tread depth, but rotted side walls. New owner of the property said "Just get that old heap out of there." They couldn't figure out how to get it out of gear. They thought it was automatic because of column shift, and couldn't figure out what the third pedal was for. It was free for getting it out of there.😁 I'm 72. Thought I was done with projects/toys. I think I have the energy for one more in me.
I’m glad to hear you’re back in it! Great truck
That piece you found around 25:12 is an old Love Joy coupler. There are two identical pieces and a rubber insert (called a spider). They are used to couple motors to gear boxes. Still used in all over in industrial applications. You can buy them brand new still.
Nah, it's part of a tractor's pto. Keeps the spinning attached implement from spinning the engine when you want to idle it down at the end of a row.
I feel like you've done your time and paid your road trip dues. And you deserve to drive something comfortable and at least mostly reliable.👍
That thing is mint! Thanks for taking us along Dave.

David you have entertained me on Road Kill and Road Kill Garage with your humor and knowledge and now your entertaining with your old vehicle road trips full of history !! Keep up the great work sir I appreciate your passion !!!
What a great deal for an awesome truck. It really brings back memories as my dad had a '68 C20 with a slide-in camper. I learned to drive in that thing. The biggest difference is my dad was cheap, so no a/c, no p/s, it had the wide ratio 4-speed manual, and an aftermarket 8-track. Twelve mpg is about right without the camper. With the camper it got 6-9 mpg depending on wind direction. And it needed those really big mirrors with the camper.
The part that you found in the desert is known as a lovejoy. It is used as a connection between a power source and a hydraulic pump usually. I have seen a lovejoy used as a magneto connection on some old farm equipment.
Some of these had a rubber piece between the two of them.
Those stock wheels look amazing.
I have the 1969 Ford F250 that my dad bought brand new. I was 4 and remember being in the show room when he bought it. It has all the old guy stuff. Battery clock on the dash it had the extend o bumper and still has the extra battery hold down. It’s a Ranger camper special with all the trim. I was laughing at you finding all the old guy stuff. He even had a pouch mounted for his shades. 😂😂. Great episode.
Not gonna lie, these videos are my favorites of all videos you have done, THANK YOU !
What a solid score on that truck. Super clean for 5k.

Nice truck!! The rubber curtain across the back is to keep rocks and other debis from being kicked up into whatever you may be towing. The emergency reflectors were something of a gift for joining AAA.... I have only ever seen one other slide out bumper and it was also on a truck used for a large slide in camper. I had an F250 extended cab with slide out bumper and a 12 foot slide in camper. I used to utilize an oak tree to pull it out and push it in. No way I could move it by hand, but then again, It was a bit rusty!! Really sweet ride.. Great score..... Ps. I have an 02 F250 super crew with a V10 and I am lucky to get 9.5 MPG... Just imagine that truck with either a L60 or L80 Overdrive..... There is your cross country caddy!!!
I daily drive my F350 because the 6.0 gets 14-16mpg whereas my suburban 2500 6.0 gets 9-11mpg!

Dave, this truck is in such good condition because it spent most of its life in an area known as the "banana belt". This is an area on the leeward side the Olympic Peninsula in the weather shadow of Mount Olympus. This area is also known by meteorologists as the "Sequim Hole" or the "Blue Hole". This region receives about half the rainfall of the surrounding areas in the Pacific Northwest.
That truck is one of my favorites. More than worth the price.
Thanks Dave
I enjoyed your truck and the trip. I owned the '66 version of that truck with a 327" and a TH 400. The idiot that ordered it new opted for a 5.13 rear axle! I buzzed along pretty well on the highway. Camper info: I had an 8' (?) cabover camper on my truck. It was held down by 4 camper tie-downs that were anchored in the bed corner stake pockets. Coming down from the cabover were two shock absorber-like devices that attached to the cab at the cowl. They would tear right out of the cowl or camper after encountering a big whoopdee-doo. The multiple small tie-downs on the bedside were for a tonneau/tarp and weren't camper related. Have a great day! John Fleming - Bakersfield
My stepdad had a `69 K20 for years. These were the days that nobody thought that riding in the bed of a pickup was a problem, and my step-brother and I rode on lawn chairs in the back all the way from Denver to San Diego. That truck is one of the few non-Mopars on my list of wants…
70s kid? Same here, seeing that was an everday thing. Fri/Sat night youd see those and wagons spilling over with teens. I remember (In Ca) the LA times was putting out articles on dogs falling out of the back, PETA all that bs. Suddenly it was unsafe and illegal.
Its a beauty!! And the roadtrip with the historic narration is fantastic. Thank you.
I got a 54:38 c69 C10 going last summer been sitting in the field for over 20 years.

FYI the coupling you found in the desert is a Lovejoy coupling. It has many industrial uses. There would have been a rubber spider in the middle of two of those. One of them must have backed up the shaft and caused what you were calling the ramp.
PS keep doing what you're doing👍🏻💯
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip!
That is one half of a LoveJoy style motor coupling hub assembly. Those "ramped" sections are worn down and should be squared off. It mated with another identical hub on the driven side with a hard elastomer star shaped pad in between that would cushion the shock loads between the electric motor and what ever it was driving.

I had a ‘78 GMC Camper Special that I absolutely loved. Change of plans necessitated a change of vehicle.
FWIW, the holes on the top rear of the front fender on mine is where an arch shaped metal bracket was mounted. These factory brackets had round openings at the top which served to tied down the slide in camper that would have had a sleeper over the cab.

Most these trucks when new got 16 inch rims out back with those Camper Special tires. 16.5?(Cant remember)
Freiburger,
The spring-loaded hooks on the side of the pickup bed are for tying down cargo, not the camper. The flap under the rear bumper is to protect a trailer that would have been pulled behind the vehicle. You see them on motorhomes all the time to protect the tow vehicle. The ball on the front of the truck tells me that someone pulled a camper trailer behind the truck. If your backup skills were not so good, you could get the trailer close to the campsite spot, unhook the trailer from the back of the truck hook it to the front of the truck, and push the trailer into place. You are correct all of the holes in the doors are for auxiliary mirrors. That would include the holes in the frame around the windows. I believe in 1969 Chevrolet was still factory installing a plate for the mirror on the door. You are right, the holes on the driver's side just behind the hood would have been for the CB radio antenna. With a cab-over camper, there would have been no other place to put the antenna. I am surprised you did not mention the ball on the fount of the truck or the pass-through rear window. The gas mileage for the vehicle sounds right to me. I would have guessed around 12 mpg for a V8 of that time. Your shock at the price of the truck is interesting to me. The truck sold new for between $2,000 to $3,000. A used truck like it would have sold for $2,000 in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. After 2000 I have not kept up with the price of old pickup trucks so I am not sure. I am sure if someone offered $5,000 to buy an old truck sight unseen, most old truck owners would jump at the easy money. At one point, I would have accepted $5,000 for either my 1969 Ford van or my 1972 Ford pickup truck. At the show's end, you mentioned selling the truck because you have too many vehicles now. If you decide to sell it, I will give you the $5,000 you paid for it and you will be out nothing.
David how could you not talk about the front mounted trailer hitch.? It's used for launching your boat if you have trouble backing your boat down the ramp. And the giant mud flap IMO. is to keep rocks from hitting the bow of a boat. The town of 29 Palms got it's name from Col. Henry Washington. When he first explored the area. The trees were planted by the Serrano and the Chemehuevi people.
I was thinking the same. I use my front hitch for shuffling my little camper and other utility trailers around in tight spaces.
The shout out of pbg is just one reason I can support friburger without question looking out for the little guy 👍
Freiburger is the real deal!
Awesome man, we’ve got a C20 and love the thing. It’s a 85’ C6P 8600GVW SM465 built 383 14-bolt 4.10 gears. Great find Dave🤘
Now that's a going to town rig!
A true poor man's cadillac nothing in it, like these new ones fully loaded.
The flap underneath on the back is so you don't throw rocks or water spray during wet weather on to a trailer you are towing. I also have a Alpine equalizer and amplifier that is the same era as the Alpine in the truck if interested.
If I was in a better spot Id buy them. My fav stereo setup ever. Any car or truck I got in the 80s 90s got Alpines
Such a deal... Good on Phil for re-homing such a great truck to an awesome owner.
My buddy Eric, technically... Eric's dad; Darrel Jones, had the exact same truck in HS, only it was blue... (with the white cab) And my bad... it was a C/10, not a C/20, but still... I love these trucks... my dad got us a '67 Chevy step-side (short-box if you can believe it). 4WD, for $350 when I was in HS (think late 80's) and my god... I wish I'd have spent every dollar I had to keep that truck and buy every other truck or car I could have then...
GD I miss that truck... we put 39" Mickey Thompsons on it (yah, the baja radials... 15" wide... the good lookin' ones). Rest in peace MT... And rest in piece Eric...
It was gettin' close to perfect and dad sold it (I don't blame him; he got a damn good offer on it at the time). But... it's one of those that I still wish I had, and would be WAY out of my price range now. Cest la vie...
So... I'll say it again, good on you Phil for being such a cool dude and giving DF such a decent price on this truck. More people should be like both of you... reality is. A truck that looks this good is worth twice as much to anyone that knows them (at least). 15k anywhere... all day long.
you did all the old man things on that truck but you never mentiond the hitch on the front
But you saw it. Why would he need to mention it if you saw it already
The hitch on front is another old guy mod

That’s a steal of the century! That’s definitely a 20-25k truck around where I live in Massachusetts simply because I live in the rust belt so we rarely ever see stuff like this and while being mostly original and fairly rust free.
Love the content man keep it up, from Spokane Washington!
Noice!!! 👍 I'm in the process of tricking my wife into us getting an unreliable muscle car/truck instead of getting a reliable fuel sipper😅
As it should be
Easier to ask forgiveness than permission. Do it!
Sweet truck!! Another great roadtrip! I really enjoy hearing the nostalgic tone in your voice..." this what it was like driving this truck, when it was new...56 years ago" your voice waxing nostalgia....epic! Thanks DF!
Whos here bc of PBG
@@Grenade825 I watch both almost religiously.
