No thanks, especially when the new turbos are already failing and will be expensive to repair when it happens out of warranty. If I'm spending $65k, I'm buying a full-size truck, likely an F150, which Granger Ford routinely sells at $10-14k off MSRP. The Ridgeline has a 3.5L V-6 that puts out 280 hp and has proven to be very reliable over time. It also routinely sells for $3k-$5k below MSRP at dealerships close to me, making it basically a $40k truck. If I need a few inches more of ground clearance, I can always add a lift kit.
I never liked the first gen ridgeline but when It was redesigned for 2017, I really appreciated where they were going with it. No, it's not as capable as a body on frame truck. I instead look at as a car with a bed that can tow. Suddenly it feels incredibly capable for what it is. The ridgeline is a good mix of what everyone needs. The ford version (maverick) is proof that a car with a bed is all that most people need. All that said, honda missed the mark on the trials port. I expected a lot more. Even the HPD package looks more offroad ready
I have a 2013 ridgeline sport it’s got 120,000 miles trucks been flawless. I love that it’s front wheel or all wheel drive my f150 would slide out on me all the time in the rain. The ridgeline you never have to worry about that and it’s great in the snow. I have 3 kids truck does everything I need and more love it
For daily driving I agree, I just traded my Tacoma for a Ridgeline and couldn’t be happier. And when you compare the options you get for $45k for the same money you get a stripped down Tacoma.
@@ValFinale in no world would a Tacoma be as comfortable and as competent on the road. They also have a smaller interior. 90% of Tacoma owners use them as pavement queens. If a Ridgeline owner lifts it and adds under body protection that vehicle is seeing more off road than almost all Tacomas
If I wanted a Jeep, I’d buy a Jeep, not a Ridgeline! I spent 50 years building roads, so I’m going to use them! No truck compares to bulldozers, and everyone doesn’t need a bulldozer, either.
Yes. A few very simple tweeks, a two inch lift and BFG K02's would transform this truck. We love our 2021. Best vehicle we ever owned. Put a turbo on the V6 and you would have a true beast.
I love the interior width (elbow room) in the Ridgeline. Almost like a full size truck. Just wish there was a version with a LOT more ground clearance.
Great video as always with your content. I find it interesting that Honda is slow getting their models updated and yes the Trail sport should be consistent with the models that wear the badge.
Honda (like Toyota) moves very slowly when it comes to updating their vehicles. They like to perfect vehicles over time without too many changes. This is why they have a good reliability reputation.
I still don't understand why Honda doesn't make a V8 engine. They consistently make such good inline 4 cylinder engines that it just seems logical to stick two of them together. Obviously that would require a new block, but it could share pistons, one cylinder head, and all of the valve train parts with the 4 cylinder it was based on. For example, you could have a K-series based 4.0l, 4.6l, or 4.8l V8 that could be either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Or you could base a V8 off of the new 1.5l turbo engine that's in the Civic, which would get you a 3.0l twin-turbocharged V8 with 350+ horsepower that would probably sip fuel while cruising. The Ridgeline with a small V8 like that would be kind of amazing.
Best Channel on YT! Ryan is a great driver and car scientist. And yes, the Ridgeline is an incredible truck. Honda haters better fear when they drop a twin turbo in it, lift it and BFG K02's on it.
Add inch and a half lift kit to this truck with your choice of all-terrain tires and you have a truck that does 90% of what you want it to do plus a tad more off-road prowess from stock trim.
$45000 truck, honda couldn’t give it a 1.5” lift? Big missed opportunity but I think it confirms, Honda really does not consider this thing an off road vehicle
Agreed. I have a Ridgeline. It's great for what it is. However, this package is pointless. Needed a lift, recovery hooks, a bigger skid plate and an outlet in the bed. I still wouldn't get the Trail-sport but it would make this package more worth while.
If this trim was priced at like 38-40k this would be absolutely one of the best vehicles to buy on the market. Thinking I’ll try and get a lightly used one in 1-3 years
@@Gman50001 true! But with tax destination and potential markups it always jumpers a bit, I’d love to have this stay in the 40ish range when it’s all said and done. Just saying if it was that price, it would be one of the best vehicles by far in the market
Considering you could get an outback wilderness or a trd tacoma/rav 4 for this price, what is honda doing? Who is this marketed to? The interior looks really cheap compared to even the subarus.
You're right Ryan, it feel like you're driving a Honda Accord sometime. Especially if you have aftermarket intake, j-pipe, and catback exhaust like mine. I have the 2021 model with a 2in lift and 1in taller tire. It is pretty good on-road and moderate off-roading. It's definitely not something I would want to rock crawl or overland with unless I have full underbody protections and a minimum of 5 inches lift over stock.
I do like your reviews cuz you spend the time on the whole vehicle - but how many folks 1) really do the serious offroading you appear to enjoy and 2) I bet most folks buy the off road models for looks and/or WOW factor with their friends. Keep up those good reviews !
Personally, after owning an FJ Cruiser and recently drove a 4Runner, I am glad that I choose the Passport. The ride is just so much better on paved roads. Sure the FJ and 4Runner will do offroad better, but for someone who doesn't do much offroading only driving in deep ish snow a couple times a year, the trade off going to a body on frame vehicle is just not worth it.
Ridgeline owner here...for Honda to release a 'Trailsport' model and not give it any type of lift, is laughable. If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.
Damn, I love you and hate you for this super honest review. I was in love with this vehicle before watching your video now I'm not so sure since they held back so hard on the features compared to the pilot. I already have a pilot, I want a ridgeline but I can wait to see what they release for 2025.
Great video! Are you planning to do the Nissan Frontier? I am planning my retirement and need a comfortable AWD vehicle for North GA mtns. Like to see what you think of the new Nissan truck?
The major positive for the Honda…reliability, which translates to fewer visits to mechanic than required for the competition (including the new 2024 Tacoma). A Ridgeline owner will still have use of their vehicle when the others are at the shop. My ownership horizon is 200k. Chevy, Ford, the vaunted Tacoma, and perhaps the Nissan will visit the mechanic many times during that ownership period. The Ridgeline? Not nearly.
Every Toyota dealer lot I have been to has a dealer added sticker next to the factory sticker adding 10 to 20 % to the price plus fake add on charges like "Protective Film" for $700 more. The Honda lots only seem to have the factory stickers. That makes the Tacomas, 4Runners, etc. much higher than the Hondas. That more than levels the playing field as far as I can see. And don't even get me started on turbo 4 cylinders.
Good enough for me in northern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 and never had any problems on road or off road. And wish Honda did more including ground clearance and more than pilot trailsport. But it's still good enough. Especially as a made in America by Americans for Americans
Really like my 2022 Ridgeline Black Edition. Honda needs to be careful with their prices getting so high. They also need to update the infotainment. If I where buying today, I would also be looking at the Ford Ranger, Raptor!
You can easily buy one today well under MSRP like I did. The infotainment was updated for the 2024 with a larger screen, faster processor and wireless apple carplay and android auto. Personally I can't stand having a giant ipad stuck on the dash.
Never had a problem with adaptive cruise control issues due to blockages with my 2 ridgelines from 2016 to present day. And I use cruise control a lot! I live in northern NH where we get plenty of snow in winter, and plenty of muddy roads in spring. Sounds like the 4Runner was just poor design.
I believe the passport flopped becuase of the extra weight suv's are. Truck beds are lighter and perfect for off roading. This truck needs 3 inch uplift kit and its perfect for off road.
FYI blind spor moitoring does not work below 20mph so be careful on your slow merges. adaptive cruise control is not stop and go and does not work below 25mph. the front parking sensors are only in the front corners, it wont detect a parking pole or a smaller car. it does not have hill descent control.. no 360cam or front trail cam. the vented seats in the BE dont really work that great. everything else works pretty well
It’s nice truck but just not a truck I would take off road really . A good day to day truck . I think the Ranger or Colorado would be the better overall options. The way infotainment dash is set up I do not like that angle at all . Thanks for review . I saw Ranger Raptor in person dang it looks amazing . Enjoy !
@@thomas735 well if you never take off road yea it should . Off roading is expensive activity .the Ridgeline is fine truck but not truck your taking a ranger or Colorado off roading with . Different trucks which is fine
IMO the only things missing are the 8.1" ground clearance instead of say 9.3", and it would be nice to have a 6ft bed option (but we'll definitely never get that).
👍🏼 great. Man I wish Honda would simply make this truck the way they know they can! Honda is more than capable! Honda please 2.5 inch factory lift, 3” wider, add side compartments on bed like Dodge, up tow ability to 7,000 lbs with tow package, turbo charge the v6… front camera/ 360 camera…
I like having some buttons instead of a big iPad infotainment, but this system just looks pretty outdated. Looks like they refreshed the screen to at least get wireless CarPlay but the climate controls look like they haven’t been updated in a decade. Looks kinda cheaper than a low to mid-trim Subaru.
I wonder why they didn't lift it a bit for the trailsport ridgeline like they did for the Passport trailsport, which was like 0.5" higher. Not a lot but at least something. Ground clearance ratings also seem misleading sometimes. My new X1 M35 has a stated 8.1" ground clearance, but if you were to park it next to a ridgeline (or passport.. my prior vehicle), the Honda would look like it had dramatically more ground clearance. I wish there was some some more standardization of ground clearance measurements and expectations to make it easier to compare.
Usually just hold the cruise on button for a few seconds and then the symbol on the dash will switch from adaptive cruise symbol to the cruise symbol amd u should be able to just use cruise. That's how it is on toyota and nissan at least
mehh..but it is a car truck..fine for some. The MPG though? beyond unacceptable though. Most full size half ton trucks get better so that is pretty bad. They truly should not have released this without the same lift and other goodies of the Passport version. Hard to justify the price and MPG for a very Honda, very car-like vehicle, that's only off road merit is the aftermarket tires. TY for the video Ryan.
You mentioned similar price as Tacoma TRD Offroad? With auto transmission and leather seats standard, the Ridgeline is much less. Unless you need the heavy off-road capability, the Honda does okay for less.
1500 lb payload blows the Taco away and I am pretty sure the RL real world Mpg is as good or better than comp. The 4 inch wider cabin. I could never go back to any of the tiny cabins in the others where your elbow to elbow with the passenger. Ride comfort is unmatched. Trunk in bed is the best.
The problem that I see, I live in Denver Colorado and our snowy weather is coming and I don't see that truck with 8 inches of clearance driving up to I 70 in 10 inches of snow. I 70 gets closed down every year about 10 times a year.
It seems the 1st gen was superior in most ways, other than MPGs… Better approach and departure angles, slightly bigger trunk, more ground clearance, and a roomier front cabin area due to the column shifter.
The Ridgeline is meant for Honda owners and is just enough truck for the weekend warrior that makes trips to Lowe’s or Home Depot for mulch or a load of gravel. If you want to do light off roading there are tons of videos adding a Trux 1/2 “ or a 1” leveling kit that does not interfere with the suspension or the Honda sensing . I saw one up close….really looks great when you lift the front end up that 1/2 -1”. The “ snow plow” look goes away and looks “beefy.” I still would not buy any truck right now with the gas prices still going up. At least wait until 2025. Hopefully life will be better overall🙏🤞 As for the engine….I applaud Honda for keeping their bullet proof NA V6! New Tacos are all a 4 cyl turbo. Is that what a Taco owner really wants….not to mention being made in Mexico?? There goes the long term reliability. Great video on a great truck. Very well done Ryan !!👏👏👏👏
The Trailsport really isn't the one to get unless you really like the badging. The RTL gets you anything you could need in one of these. I had a 2017 and currently drive a 2023. The '17 was near perfect, but the transmission shift quality started to noticeably degrade after 100k miles and I got spooked. So I traded for the 2023. It's more of the same, mostly. More refined in some aspects like the ride and sound insulation. But the radio is garbage (laggy, unresponsive and check out the savagegeese review for an explanation for how they butcher the sound quality) and the push-button shifter is an affront to God. But overall it's still the same incredibly useful, efficient, cleverly designed truck. I am bummed they got rid of the captains chairs and the sliding lid center console in the '24s. Looking forward to the refresh with the Pilot's running gear.
Unless you do a lot of towing over 5k pounds or off-roading, the Ridgeline is absolutely best in-class. It's got a more usable bed than the Frontier and is far more comfortable than the Tacoma. Those other trucks have their uses, but if you're like 90% of truck buyers the Ridgeline will fill your needs with fewer sacrifices in comfort and economy.
That is very impressive performance to a Ridgeline at the "Trail". Sure for 4WD folks that's just a dirt road. But you have to understand Ridgeline/ Passport/Pilot/MDX these things rely on clutches in center and rear diff. You put more power its going to cook the clutches. Engine is build for fuel economy switching between 3cyl and 6cyl (older systems used 3,4 & 6 mode). That's too much work for the engine as well. Been a direction injection only it definitely need some high speed driving to minimize carbon build up, not very slow speed or short drive friendly. Not having a frame its not expected to have all that stress on the body. For example on a BOF vehicle like 4Runner / Tacoma/ Wrangler/F150 you don't care opening the door when the vehicle is at a tricky spot vs the on these vehicles door is part of the strength of the structure. So to my eyes this is very impressive and more than what is expected from a car.
Oriented for economy, but ironic thst the fuel economiy is avsolute sh1te. I drive an 09 which, with jts v6, has the same fuel economy as v8 trucks, except more expensive maintenance and less reliability.
@@HarryKuloh I hope you have not comparing to new V8s with cylinder deactivation and active fuel management. The V8s with non of that fuel tech you probably looking at around 12/13mpg for (5L ish) and even less with bigger ones I bet. If I don't miss my years vehicles like 2009 Pilot would have additional 4cyl mode. So when 3cyl is not enough you can run on 4cyl without switching to full 6cyl. 2016+ (if I'm not mistaken) when 3cyl is not enough they switch to full 6 cyl. Again mpg would be subjective until tested same conditions.
A little over priced. That's why I offered $42000 for mine and it now sits in my garage. 2024 Sonic Grey TS.(Just like the one tested but without the black Ridgeline lettering. Might be my first accessory). Considered the new Canyon but storage space is minimal, not to mention you can no longer fold the back seats down. Only need to tow SXS so 5000 pounds is plenty. A couple of complaints. Halogen high beams(LED"s for low) and auto dimming headlights are a joke.
You can get a Ridgeline well under MSRP much easier than a Tacoma. After watching I built the Tacoma I'd want with similar features to the Ridgeline and it was almost 4k more MSRP. Also, still not sold on reliability of all the new turbo engines in other midsizes.
Doesn't the new Tacoma start in the low 40s. Given this trim is mid 40s I wouldn't call that expensive these days? Top Tacoma is well into the 60s isn't it?
this kinda feels like what toyota did with their tacoma and 4runner... they just changed a little here and there, insignificant until the sold # dropped very low, then you see marketing hitting with upcoming refresh and teases. Seems all makers have 1 or 2 in their lineup like this. not sure what causes it if its the number sold per year or resources, or they are waiting to see what competitors do or they are focused on a plan to keep their best selling at top.
Ford should make a mid-size unibody truck in the vein of the Maverick, and they'd have endless free advertising by RUclipsrs doing comparison vids between it and the Ranger and everything else.
I know they're out there but ive yet to meet anyone that actually offroads, despite the plethora of lifted jeeps and TRD tacomas. Maybe it's just my area though.

I have 3 kids truck does everything I need and more love it
Love our 2022 Ridgeline
Never thought I would say this but the Ridgeline is 100% better than the Tacoma!!!
For daily driving I agree, I just traded my Tacoma for a Ridgeline and couldn’t be happier.
And when you compare the options you get for $45k for the same money you get a stripped down Tacoma.
For going to the mall. N.A.R.T.
@@smuook1969 realistically nobody takes a new pickup off road. That is left for owner 2 or 3
@lbjgh Off Road Test is literally in the title of the video 🙄
@smuook1969 Ridgeline has much more usable bed, better at actually hauling. Taco is better at carrying groceries.
A factory lift and some real skid plates would transform the Ridgeline.
The aftermarket support for both of those things is really good.
@@dmanatan lol so to make it almost a tacoma, i have to spend more money than a tacoma......Ill just get a tacoma said everyone
I just picked up a 2024 Ridgeline on a great deal. The best part of this video is your taste in music. I approve ;)
Ryan, as stated by someone else. Sport mode will start out in 1st gear. In normal, the transmission starts in higher 2nd gear.
Wish they'd have lowered it and just called it "Sport"
Thinking I’ll try and get a lightly used one in 1-3 years
@@TheCree2010Realistically you can get it for like 42 new

Considering you could get an outback wilderness or a trd tacoma/rav 4 for this price, what is honda doing? Who is this marketed to? The interior looks really cheap compared to even the subarus.
lol the trd rav4 s literally as capable as this, aka not at all
trd tacoma now youre talking
You're right Ryan, it feel like you're driving a Honda Accord sometime. Especially if you have aftermarket intake, j-pipe, and catback exhaust like mine.
I have the 2021 model with a 2in lift and 1in taller tire. It is pretty good on-road and moderate off-roading. It's definitely not something I would want to rock crawl or overland with unless I have full underbody protections and a minimum of 5 inches lift over stock.
Wish it was timing chain. Also wish the QC was a little better.
They just did a stop sale due to fuel pumps or soemthing.
The stop sale is due to the rear camera harness but yeah, there are other issues as well.
It's not a stop sale, just a recall for a rear camera harness that might fail in the future.
I went with the ridgeline trailsport and couldn't be happier
Good that the tailgate hinges/swings off the PROPER side
I almost spit out my coffee when you said 7.6 inches of ground clearance, that's insanely low
It still seemed to do fine here, and this is significantly worse than most pickup owners ever see.
I like the Ridgline but would not consider a truck with less than 8.5” of ground clearance.

Not nearly.
"I am 6ft 1 inch, legs and torso proportionate"
Ryan once dated a girl that said he had short legs and he's been making this point ever since!
Best auto channel on YT
I'd like to see the Honda Ridgeline Trailsport and the Ford Maveric Tremor go head to head!
Truck King did that recently. But I would love to see that done on this channel
The Tremor will dominate over the Ridgeline. No comparison.
My '17 is still going strong. Only about 145,000. Does everything I need without the hefty pricetag.
Standard cruise? Press and hold the distance adjustment button until notified on the screen.
Thanks. Good to know.
Really like my 2022 Ridgeline Black Edition. Honda needs to be careful with their prices getting so high. They also need to update the infotainment.
If I where buying today, I would also be looking at the Ford Ranger, Raptor!
The infotainment in my '21 Ridgeline is quite possibly the worst I've ever experienced. The system in this one is apparently much, much better.
You can easily buy one today well under MSRP like I did. The infotainment was updated for the 2024 with a larger screen, faster processor and wireless apple carplay and android auto. Personally I can't stand having a giant ipad stuck on the dash.
@@killjoyken Nice!
Adaptive cruise can be turned off in similar way to Subarus. Hold down one of the buttons that changes following distance, I forget which.
I’ve owned two older generations of the Ridgeline. Loved them. They need to do something about the ground clearance. That’s why I now have a 4Runner.
The voice control also controls audio and HVAC. Even my 2006 does this.
Bet that motor last longer than any turbocharged motor made! Love the 6 cylinder naturally aspirated motor!
I have a wrangler rubicon for all my off road fun. The ridgeline is my smooth ride / utility vehicle.
The ridgeline isn’t as quick but it will keep going way past those little turbos the competition has.
Wow. My 2021 F 150 with the 2.7 averages between 22 and 24 mpg.
Thinking of trading in my Hyundai Santa Cruz for the Honda Ridgeline. Why? I need the extra cab room, and the extra power sounds nice too
Putting all the bad aside they REALLY need to update the looks.
If interested also consider maintenance cost. Timing belts are expensive and Honda is still using them . Big mistake
Seems like some small upgrades would make this pretty decent- very cool!
I really like ridgelines, but $45k+ for a vehicle stuck in 2018 is so disappointing. Also, whatever happened to HPD?

Wish the gear selector was on the dashboard that's really my only zonk
I believe the passport flopped becuase of the extra weight suv's are. Truck beds are lighter and perfect for off roading. This truck needs 3 inch uplift kit and its perfect for off road.
Whew, Ryan’s really going for the WPM world record during the off road tests in his videos lately. (WPM: words spoken per meter driven 😂)
FYI blind spor moitoring does not work below 20mph so be careful on your slow merges. adaptive cruise control is not stop and go and does not work below 25mph. the front parking sensors are only in the front corners, it wont detect a parking pole or a smaller car. it does not have hill descent control.. no 360cam or front trail cam. the vented seats in the BE dont really work that great. everything else works pretty well
I will take the Ridgeline over all other midsize trucks.
It’s nice truck but just not a truck I would take off road really . A good day to day truck . I think the Ranger or Colorado would be the better overall options. The way infotainment dash is set up I do not like that angle at all . Thanks for review . I saw Ranger Raptor in person dang it looks amazing . Enjoy !
Yup, I test drove the ridgeline and loved it, but the lack of ground clearance is a killer
This will last a lot longer than any other truck in the segment except for maybe the frontier.

My one real question relative to this trail sport is does the suspension really change Ridgeline with my 2020 RTL with better tires work as well
IMO the only things missing are the 8.1" ground clearance instead of say 9.3", and it would be nice to have a 6ft bed option (but we'll definitely never get that).
For offroading you can put it in S mode and hold first gear. In D mode it starts in second gear so it won't crawl as nice as in S mode
Can you get a Solterra to run through your course? Just picked one up on that lease special. Would love to see you push it's limits.
We did take the Toyota BZ4X AWD through, and it's the exact same vehicle. ruclips.net/video/fPszNAZ0hKk/видео.html
Awesome thank you! That's my biggest complaint about the Solterra. The piano black is EVERYWHERE!
Disappointing update that isn't on par with Pilot. Hope they update TrailSport right including with a full-size spare. Ditch the brunk if needed.
mehh..but it is a car truck..fine for some.
The “ snow plow” look goes away and looks “beefy.”
I still would not buy any truck right now with the gas prices still going up. At least wait until 2025. Hopefully life will be better overall🙏🤞
As for the engine….I applaud Honda for keeping their bullet proof NA V6! New Tacos are all a 4 cyl turbo. Is that what a Taco owner really wants….not to mention being made in Mexico?? There goes the long term reliability.
Great video on a great truck. Very well done Ryan !!👏👏👏👏
It's a very nice vehicle that could use more ground clearance and just add a turbo to that awesome v-6 for some truly great power!
These are really great but the price they ask has always been too high imo
I would choose other producers of trucks which has body on frame vehicles. This one is great alternative for boring SUVs. Great review Ryan. Greetings
Those other trucks went 4 turbos instead of Nissan. I’d take a v6 over v4 any day of the week
It's still a cool truck. I'm between the Frontier and Tacoma. The Ridgeline still looks promising. I will continue to do more research.
@@Wrencher_86, the towing is not a problem because I'm not towing anything. And if I do, it will be less than 5,000 pounds.
Test drives is the best answer
I am so eagerly waiting for the Ridgeline with current Pilot body!!
Ridgeline is much better truck than Tacoma 95% of the time!!
Wish they brought this to Australia
I wonder if they’ll switch to the new DOHC engine next year or if they’ll wait until a new model comes out.
Probably wait for new model.
so why did this do so much better than the passport? I would expect the passport to do better since it has a shorter wheelbase.
It was also wet when we did Passport so that can change things. It is possible, that there was just something wrong with the Passport we tested.
Ford should make a mid-size unibody truck in the vein of the Maverick, and they'd have endless free advertising by RUclipsrs doing comparison vids between it and the Ranger and everything else.
Honda & Kayce Dutton: “You always ask for too much.”
I know they're out there but ive yet to meet anyone that actually offroads, despite the plethora of lifted jeeps and TRD tacomas. Maybe it's just my area though.
The Ford Ranger is in this segment, not the Maverick.
