I am not sure if I am using the best link to view the lab reports - for example, I am not sure if you ever have repeated measurements (after getting reports that include things like cyanide for the Kirkland Signature Maintenance report), or if the different years in one printed report mean that the same result can appear in multiple rows if re-tested?

We're working on finding some new labs to work with and do want to update some of these older reports, and I would ultimately like to transfer all of the data to a more well-interpreted, interactive custom report, perhaps with updates from multiple rounds of testing over time. It's just a matter of coordinating with the team and prioritizing the task, so I appreciate your encouragement to move in that direction. Thank you so much for the donation as well; it means a lot.

Fish flavor is addictive to cats. That is why a lot of cat food, and almost all dry food, has some fish in it. Otherwise, the cats would not eat it. Menhaden fish oil sound familiar? Fish has Omega 3 fatty acids that cats need. Sardines, trout, mackerel and wild caught salmon are all safe choices for cats. I never give my cats any farm raised fish. Too many bad things about it and they are full of antibiotics. Fish should be no more than 5% of a cat's diet.

    • @edschulhof6303

@@MichelleW One of my cats could not eat chicken for awhile. She outgrew it and now eats fresh chicken thigh meat all the time. Fish or fish oil is in most cat food. It is good that you found some that your cat will eat. Have you found a source for omega 3 fatty acids? Fish is the most common source for cats. But there are other foods and supplements. Glad your cats are being well taken care of.

They don't have the drive to drink a lot of water. A cat that eats a lot of kibble will be dehydrated. Over time this is one of the causes of kidney disease in cats.
In addition to lacking moisture dry cat food is generally much higher in carbohydrates than is healthy for cats. Cats need meat and fat, they don't need corn or peas or starches. There are good quality dry foods, freeze-dried foods and other foods with more meat but even the best dry food should not not make up their entire diet.

At 5:00 you note Dr. Elsey's as a good dry (for those who want dry kibble, though wet is better) and the changes in it according to comments this year. I agree the ingredients have been the best for dry kibble. But right now (September 2023) the food is out of stock at both Amazon and Chewy. Dr. Elsey's is changing the formula, taking out the eggs and adding in hydrolyzed pork and pork plasma. I am concerned. I am wondering if you have any thoughts about those pork ingredients and the claims about them. I am thinking the research is too funded by the pork industry to trust it. Dr. Elsey's has excelled at having no plants, low phosphorus and carbs and high protein. But I trusted the egg formula better. Any thoughts?

Mallory, I need help! I learned that Wellness Core was bought by Petco so I felt less good about it and i've been TRYING to find another that my cats like, and I CAN'T....!!! I never thought they were picky but they really haven't eaten much in the last couple of days, not Nulu, Tiki, not Open Nature and maybe one or two others! They'll eat Dr. Elsey's kibble but I only give them that after they've eaten wet food. It's so frustrating. But they're running around and playing a LOT, so they feel ok. It's stressful when your stubborn babies don't eat. PS: I even tried Rawz and they didnt eat it. I guess it's a battle of wills lol

I can’t afford to only feed Smalls.

You should know that Hills is owned by the company that makes Colgate toothpaste and Palmolive soap... I doubt they know what cats need. Be careful. And an interesting fact: this is the food recommended by veterinarians, not only in the US, but also in Europe (I live there and there). It's weird 🤔 I think this company pays a percentage to veterinary clinics so that they recommend their food. Maybe I'm paranoid 🤷🏽‍♀️ but I doubt Colgate knows the diet of cats... I used to love Hills, but switched to Rawz... and now I'm thinking of getting Smalls... it's expensive, but cheaper than suffer and cry later, paying a lot of money to fight for the lives of my old pets

Initially I wanted to try Dr Elsey's cat food but I too read a lot of negative remarks ever since they made changes to cut costs so I went to Open Farms Raw mix but they don't really seem to like it that much so I tried there regular formula and had the same reaction. They were apparently having problems obtaining canstock for packaging. As I now by a year's supply at a time, I had to switch back to Advantage. Hopefully I can go back to Rawz for next year.

Man That's a lot. That's why I've been making my cats' food for the last year almost. I have been using Dr. Lisa Pierson's recipe. My cats love it and they look very good. They hardly poop, but they pee a whole lot more than they used to when I fed them dry. I like it because I can control what's in it(edit). It costs me about $2.98 a day for two cats, with bone in chicken thighs at $1.99/lb.(Some skin and bone is removed, water and supplements added, etc.) It also costs about three to four hours, including shopping and cleaning, about once a month. Folks, Look into it. I like doing it.
I would like to have my homemade cat food analyzed for nutritional value by a laboratory. Can you give me any advice on how to approach that?

    • @JH-zr8lo
      @JH-zr8lo Год назад +7

Agreed, I have been prepping and feeding the "mouse model" raw for the past 2 years since I adopted my 1st of 3 cats. I do a rough grind of 80% muscle meat: chicken gizzards, hearts, thigh & drum, and pork loin, 10% bone--very rough chopped chicken necks for their teeth and jaw stimulation, and 10% organ--chicken and beef livers, also a spoon of sardines daily for Omega 3. It costs under $2 a day. I feed 3x a day, 50 grams each, they love it and have soft, silky coats like lacquer, with less shedding, odorless litter and excellent muscle tone. There is no mystery meat and not mushed up like baby food. It is an effort, but I don't need a lab to analyze that obligate carnivores have evolved to simply eat meat.

Complex organ meats are a great source of natural taurine and other vitamins and minerals, so food like this is really good. Also, while Tiki Kat wet food is on par with none as I have found no other wet foods with genuine complex organ meats in them, their dry food often contains "meal" which isn't great. So, cat lovers out there, remember that just because a company excels in one area doesn't mean they excel in all areas. And don't forget to SQUISH THAT CAT!

They get Feline Natural at night. I'm a little concerned about too much seafood since one of the Feline Natural varieties they like is their lamb and king salmon.
Do you think the quality of the Nulo silky mousse pouches is good? They are hydrating and sharing one between the two of them seems to be a good small meal.
If you (or anyone else) has had experience with these or and the input on them I would love to hear it. Thank you.

The Nulo Freestyle pouches look pretty similar to the canned food nutritionally; coconut oil stands out as one difference, but not a bad one. Overall, a pretty good option if your cats like the texture and taste. My main hesitations would be price and perhaps wasteful packaging, but the food itself is good as far as I can tell.

@@AllAboutCatsYT I agree about the wasteful packaging. I don't like it either. I don't mind taking food out of the fridge and letting it sit for a little bit to come to room temperature. They generally don't want to eat food right out of the fridge. I think part of the appeal of the pouches for many is that they are single servings but I would be happier if they came in bigger packages with less waste.
One of our two really loves the kibble they were fed in the shelter before we adopted them. It's Royal Canin kitten food and the quality of that food is not terrific (and it's kibble). He will eat Feline Natural lamb feast and lamb and king salmon. I've tried every one of the highly rated wet foods on your list. Starting with Small's which neither of them like all the way through the list. They don't like Rawz either. Lots of extra food donated to the shelter.
I don't know how they became this finicky. I'll keep trying different things but after losing my 18-year-old cat last year it would be difficult to watch these two not eating. I've tried slowly incorporating a new food and they won't eat it.
For that reason even with the bad packaging if they'll eat it as long as it's a good quality food I'm stuck with it for the moment.
Are you partnering with Smalls? It seems that you've been advocating for their food fairly heavily. I wasn't impressed with their customer service when I tried it 8 months ago and my cats wouldn't eat it. They were about 5 months old at the time.

Question: I’ve never purchased the big cans of Nulo because I wasn’t sure how long they lasted in the fridge and how well they would microwave after a few days. I have two cats that each eat about 3/4 small can of wet food a day plus freeze dry raw topper. One is a senior cat and one is just really petite. What has people’s experience been with this?

    • @bsusie1
      @bsusie1 Год назад +1

The microwave destroys the nutrition in the food. When I have leftovers, I gently heat in a pan with water in it. I put the leftover food in a small glass bowl and place in the water as it heats up....just a little.

To stay safe, I make sure I feed the open can within 24 hours 36 hours at the most. I purchased an air tight, fridge safe glass jar to store their leftovers in. Personally, I pop it in microwave for just a few seconds and then use warm bone broth to warm it to room temperature.

Wet cat food is similar to people food. When I worked in a cat rescue, 3 days sometimes 4 days. However, I recommend transferring to a separate container with a label, glass is best.
Please don't microwave cat food. Boil some water and add enough to bring it to "body" temp. The added water is good for them anyway.

We may worry too much sometimes. Consider dividing it up and freezing some? It is a myth that cats will only eat warm food. Cats I have met don't care if food is refrigerated or even partly frozen. I portion my cat food and freeze...then thaw the individual portions as needed. Only time I have heated food was when I forgot to thaw the food...

@@fredygump5578 My younger cat wont eat cold food. The warm/hot water helps release the smell. Most cats will not eat if they can't smell the food which is why cats can go downhill fast (from my experience) when they have a URI - not from the URI itself. Cats' bodies are very sensitive to caloric intake. They do not fast well like other animals can and do in times of low food availability. When I got my younger cat in 2016, both cats end up with a URI and I added unsalted sardines to their regular wet food to get them to eat. Neither required medications because they were eating and could smell the sardines in the food so they ate and recovered rather quickly without medical intervention.

Good video. Thanks! I use dry cat food as dog food + whole raw eggs. I have 3 large breed outdoor mountain dogs. I mix kibble with 1:1 water for hydration.
Do you have a list of best high protein (38% or higher) dry cat kibble that's available in grocery, farm/ranch, and discount stores?
I want to have a list ready. We only have Walmart, Target, Natural Grocers, Petco, City Market (Kroger), and Tractor Supply Company stores available to us.
I would also order it online if available for about the same price as in local stores with not much mark-up due to shipping. Maybe you've found some of these deals also?
I'm looking to stay at or below $4 per dry pound.
Thanks for any product information you may have! Peace

Thank you. I have multiple cats and one cat has a fish allergy. I have to go through the ingredients on everything that come into the house. With your recommendations I don't have to worry about overall nutrition, just the fish. It really helps.

I am TRYING to feed each cat on fifty cents a day because I have lots of cats (many show up over the years - was up to 32 at one point) now back down to around twenty.
A couple of special needs cats (FHV/FCV) get mainly chicken breast and egg yolks.
    Recommendations?

I need low carb, low phosphorus cat food. Is there such a thing that’s not going to break my budget? So far my 14 year old cat loves Dr Elsey’s dry cat food but it’s hit or miss with canned foods.
