      @peachxtaehyung bc it's overprocessed crap. Cats are Obligate Carnivores which means they NEED a diet high in protein from animal meat. They cannot be vegetarian/vegan and healthy.
      Carageenan is overprocessed seaweed. Cats' digestive system did not evolve to process seaweed. The little bit of vegetable they naturally get is from their prey digesting *their* diet.

    Just a small correction (and I hope I don’t seem nitpicky). A “chemical” refers to almost anything made of matter and can be a pure or mixed substance and naturally or artificially derived. A natural flavor is still a chemical and that doesn’t make it bad either.

      Acknowledging this comment is a year old, but I’ve seen this Jackson video too and have wondered specifically about Rawz dry food or Rawbble (freeze dried) dry food. Any idea if it’s bad?

    • @ShayZelle96
      @ShayZelle96 6 месяцев назад

      Raw food is actually the ideal way to feed your pets, but ONLY if you take the time and energy to do the research needed for all of their vitamins and minerals. It ends up being the healthiest diet while still cheaper than the cost of some wet food brands. In general though, any kind of kibble or dry food is unfortunate for kitties to say the least. This is because they will typically not self regulate as well as they should when it comes to hydration, especially if you only have still water bowls instead of water fountains. There is also the added carbohydrates when it comes to forms of kibble that leads to unhealthier pets in general. Hope that helped - Random internet stranger that coincidentally saw your comment a day later (Oh and freeze dried stuff, generally pretty good stuff as long as you make sure all nutritional requirements are met.)@@andreasmit6454

    • @robertmahiques6218
      @robertmahiques6218 6 месяцев назад +42

      @@andreasmit6454 the biggest reason dry food is bad is because cats have low thirst drive and won't drink as much water as they should get. Much of their water comes from their food. Out of those 2 the freeze dried may be a good option. I've heard of people adding water back to freeze dried food so that may be a good option.

    • @sheaholloway9537
      @sheaholloway9537 6 месяцев назад +28

      I can attest to that. Given that my indoor/outdoor cats live between 17 and 23 years each and they have all lived on Friskies and some dryfood. I'll stick with that. I rather adopt more and stretch that dollar because they all get "fixed" and receive annual checkups.

A few months ago, my old vet asked what I fed my cats and I said that I rotated “Tiki Cat, Weruva and Nulo.” She responded that she’d never heard of these brands before and that a lot of these “boutique brands” (in her words) led to heart issues and that I should switch to Royal Canin or Hill’s instead. Knowing about the nasty by products they use, I was mortified at her rec and switched vets after that. Your video here just validated my cat parenting decisions, so thank you. The second tier is Tiki Cat: Succulent Chicken. Fussie Cat: Tuna Formula. Wellness: Chicken entree. Weruva: Chicken and beef dinner. Nulo Freestyle: Turkey and chicken recipe.

I wasnt sure if you were simply pointing out a suggestion to make future videos more accessible or asking for help yourself , so if you were asking for clarification where friskies brands ranked, there's one friskies extra gravy product and it is at the lowest tier, then theres two other products by purina also at the lowest tier

    Hello! I am a veterinary student learning under the mentorship of a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and would love to give my perspectives surrounding the topic of “good” vs “bad” quality pet foods. Often the ingredient list can be misleading - for instance, the term “meat by-products” refers to any assortment of organ meat that is just as nutritious, but not normally consumed by most people in the US. Because our pets don’t care if they’re eating organ meat or muscle meat, it’s actually a great use of resources and great way of reducing waste when harvesting food production animals. I understand it can seem off-putting to not know exactly what these ingredients are and where they come, but that’s when we skip the ingredient list and look at the guaranteed analysis instead. Protein, fat, and carbohydrates and the 3 macronutrients that we can actually calculate on a gram per calorie basis using percentages of those nutrients from the guaranteed analysis. These are the numbers we should be looking at - not necessarily the ingredient list as a surrogate, because ultimately it matters more that we feed our pets the right nutrients in the right quantities than being particular about the exact sources they are coming from.
    As for corn, soy, and wheat, it is actually way less common for dogs/cats to develop food allergies to these ingredients as compared to animal protein. Beef, dairy, chicken, pork, and fish are all MORE likely to trigger food-related hypersensitivities than can result in itchy skin or GI upset. But the bottom line is that you shouldn’t worry about trying to trim down the ingredient list to avoid these unless your pet is actively having these symptoms, in which case your vet can help you start a food elimination trial (which is no easy matter). Corn, soy, and wheat are not harmful to our pets (just like they are not harmful to humans) and provide a great source of carbohydrates and micronutrients. For example, linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid for cats (their only way of getting it is through their diet) which is found in corn oil.
    I really appreciate the intention behind this video as I know you want to help pet owners out there to better understand what they’re feeding to their pets. I do think there are a lot of misconceptions about what is high quality or low quality food that are highlighted in this video. I would love to start a conversation surrounding this topic if you are willing!

      i’m sorry if this seems rude but with grain my vet said that grains are not good for your cat. I heard that it can cause lots of health problems and that being said. Another thing that a big issue for a lot of pet owners is not that it says chicken by product or any other meat mignt not be ethically sourced and that’s why many owners research products and brands.

      My concern with corn, soy and wheat is that they are all genetically modified and sprayed with Roundup, which is known to cause cancer. So until they ban those things here in Canada like they just did in Mexico, I will continue to limit how much my pets and I consume. It's not good for any of us.

      Lmao can’t imagine a physician telling a patient that ingredients don’t matter in food and to just look at the protein carb fat analysis. So bizarre and clearly veterinary medicine is much behind people medicine. Also imagine telling people that processed foods composed of added vitamins and minerals are better than natural occurring nutrients from fruits and vegetables etc. Cats who live on kibble filled with corn wheat and even lentils may be convenient for us but is certainly not what is best for them.

    I'm so glad that you finally made this video! I just spent too much time going through and pricing out many of these brands using Chewy and Amazon to see if I can afford to improve what I am feeding my cats. I was actually surprised that Wellness, Instinct and First Mate were more affordable than some of the others in their categories. Sheba was about the same price as Fancy Feast since you get more volume per package, which also surprised me. The thing that stood out to me the most is that with Canned cat food a significant part of the cost is PACKAGING. First Mate was the only one I saw that offers 12.2 oz cans. I'm not going to go over the calculations in detail but even 5.5 oz cans have better prices per oz than 3 oz cans. I am pretty excited that with the larger cans of First Mate I will be able to switch without breaking the bank as long as the kitties approve of it.

    Great video! Thank you!
    Two comments... First, if you have a cat that won't eat or has stopped eating, obviously the first thing to do is take him/her to the vet and the sooner the better. Once you have that done, Wellness Pate Chicken Entree is like kitty crack for nearly every cat I have or ever had. Just that one flavor. Wellness' other flavors are fine and my cats will eat most of them, but that one they LOVE. That's been what I've used for cats I've had that stopped eating for whatever reason and it usually works. There's also an supplement from Purina called FortiFlora. If you sprinkle a little on top of your cats' food, it will often get them eating again. They love the smell. Don't mix it in, just sprinkle on top and you don't need to use much. One packet will last several feedings.
    Second, I would love to see a taste test video of these foods. Unfortunately, I've found that some of the best quality foods I've bought are the ones my cats are least interested in and sometimes they won't eat them at all. So, seeing someone in a video wasting money to test how palatable these foods are to a bunch of hungry cats, instead of wasting my own, would be really nice. I've bought a few premium cat foods that even the feral cats outside wouldn't touch.

    I am so glad Tiki is included. I've fed my cats that once I was financially able for the longest time after much consideration between ingredient listing as you have and my budgets. They're lot less known but my cats never had issues (so far) with it over the years I fed them. I also admit that my older cat has been fed cheaper food Sheba off of market back during my hard times. I remember back then I chose it simply cause I knew Friskies/fancy feast etc were really really bad quality.
    I understand sometimes it's just not possible but I do hope people do the best they can to feed the best they can reasonably afford considering bad food equates to possibly more hospital bills down the line. (nevermind the emotional/ethical side)

      I just watched a video about making my own cat food in big batches and freezing. I already have a meat grinder so I think I’m ready to give it a try. My concern was using cheap meat (US $1.29 a pound?😮) where animals are fed glyphosate riddled corn, but even premium canned food certainly isn’t gonna be better than that in any event…our food supply is so messed up our animals can’t be any better off…the recipe has you add extra taurine and vitamin E, B complex, so it looks a lot better than that heavily processed looking Wellness chicken shreds we’re giving him. Glad it at least made upper tier but still…

Any wet food with under 9% crude protein is a huge no-no, for Taurine your looking for .05% or higher (Idealy much higher). @@leoprdsoul1 Hi! I feed my cat 2 different wet food brands: Untamed and Canagan. (He's been transitioned to each one slowly) He's been doing AMAZING on them! It's only been 2 months since he started eating them. His coat is glossy, his eyes are shiny and he plays 4-5 times a day, each play session lasting 10 mins. He is overall much happier. When I remind myself that he's 11 years old, it's really hard to believe! 💙I also stay away from fish and pork. Perhaps I might transition him to a cat food brand called Rawz, I like the fact that it says 'no carrageenan'. I live in the UK so maybe where you live these cat food brands are not availabe.

Long story short, I did research prior to this video and what's funny is your tier list is what I agree with 95%. Just as an aside as the video did not go into it at all; Taurine and crude protein are VERY IMPORTANT for cats, the higher you can get those the better for your cats! Any wet food with under 9% crude protein is a huge no-no, for Taurine you're looking for .05% or higher (Idealy much higher). without Taurine in your cats food it will go blind.

Freeze dried is like slowly evaporated- adlong as it’s undergone some process it’s okay,just don’t ever feed actual raw meat, it’s filled with tons of germs and contaminates and can make your animal super sick. Raw = the real food st8 out of the market, to your cat
      Freeze dried= raw meat gone through a process that contains the meat while still process to keep protein as much as possible but able to be put on shelves with more nutrients mixed in to ensure a proper nutrient diet.
      Raw coated kibble seems to be same thing as freeze dried except inside each piece of meat theirs kibble (so its kibble food more so though)

      Freeze-dried raw: raw food that has had nearly all of the moisture taken out so that it lasts much longer while still retaining the nutrients. Quality depends on the ingredients used.
      Regular raw: food that has not been cooked. Quaity depends on the ingredients used.
      Raw coated: could be freeze-dried or dehydrated powder over normal kibble. Better than regular kibble, but not by much because kibble by and large is junk. Usually high, HIGH, levels of carbs and chemicals.

    • @Mapleaple
      @Mapleaple 2 года назад +8

      Due to over harvesting white fish in oceans most high quality brands will still sometimes say "ocean fish" this refers to whitefish of more then 1 type of fish harvested from a fisherman's boat to be made for cat cans or dog cans.. Over harvesting 1 fish has destroyed the breeding cycles of certain white meat fish. There are 100s of white fish in the ocean that are all so similar they are not like a Tuna,salmon and so on for labeling. So seeing white fish just means they put a few types of high quality fish in the food. Now I know it's weird and sketchy but that's how you have to label it. I wondered that for a long time. It would be more scary to see "by product ocean fish meal" gross right.

    This was awesome! I admittedly used to feed my cat friskies because he LOVED it (and it was cheap). then a couple years ago (he's 7 now) I started learning more about quality cat food. Since then, I refuse to buy friskies, fancy feast, etc. My cat and new kitten both LOVE Tiki Cat and Nulo. I'm glad they are both rated pretty high. I will have to look into the chef's kiss brands. I also started adding supplements and other things to their meal to really enhance their nutrition. Thanks for this and really explaining your reasoning, and teaching us what to look for!

      @@nikkilukowski3739 It is common knowledge that many vets will push the prescription brands that funded their business and education over anything else. Diabetes in cats is also a subject that many vets aren’t thoroughly educated in. Our vet in particular said plainly that nothing is certain. I am not a vet but I do have experience managing diabetes in family members.
      We did home glucose testing on our cat and noticed every time that her sugar levels would spike much higher after eating her prescription food over generic wet food. We switched our cat to a strict low carb wet food diet that was non prescription and after 6 months her diabetes went into remission. All without the help of prescription foods. There are no additional “nutrients” in the prescription foods our vet prescribed. Generally it had even more non-nutritional fillers than the cheapest value brand at 3x the cost.

    My kitty and I LOVE Instinct brand! Kitty eats it up, and his coat is (i may be biased) fantastic. I can really tell the difference when I've had to switch to other foods. He usually has Instinct brand or Wellness brand kibble and wet food, and his coat is always, soft, shiny and healthy looking. The vet said she's never felt a softer cat, haha. But when the stores are out or I've had to switch to other brands, after only a couple days you can tell the difference in his fur. Dull, dry, and he just doesn't seem as hydrated, bright-eyed or energized. Thanks for doing a review and adding a few more products to my radar! It helps to switch up and keep an eye out for reliable brands that keep my cat healthy :)

It's reassuring that a nutritionist agrees with the choices I made. She eats almost entirely "Oh Hell Yea" with some *Chef's Kiss* and an occasional 'Cheers'.
