Hey! I'm getting a new cat by the end of March/early April from a foster that has been caring for a mother and her kittens. I was looking into Dr. Elsey's, and also noticed through it cat foods being labelled as for "All Life Stages". What's your thought on that kind of food? You think an "All Stages" kind of food would be good for a kitten? I actually contacted them and they confirmed it as an all stages food, but I was curious to hear your thoughts, as far as nutrition and if you think the nutrition you see from them matches up to what a kitten needs.
I'd really appreciate feedback, either way. :)

    • @drdebbie03
      @drdebbie03 3 года назад +3

@@kacievines7981 ask them to send you samples. They are awesome about that. I know kittens have unique dietary needs. I guess it depends on how old the kitten is. There's a difference imho between weeks old and months old. Also, I'd imagine, it would be important to keep the diet consistent when your kitty transitions from foster care to you. If the foster care provider has been fostering kittens and cats for awhile, have a conversation about how s/he made decision to use the current kitten food. I have found that those who have been fostering kitties have a lot of experience. And tbh, just because reviews are awesome, doesn't mean it's best for your kitten or cat. Last, talk to your veterinarian about nutritional needs and whether your new kitty is getting what a kitten needs from current diet provided from foster caregiver. These are just things that come to mind for me. As far as Dr Elseys Clear Protein, I wonder if it is too much protein for a kitten. Stick to what
s/he has been eating for now. Good luck!

Thx for the video Mallory as always!! Very pleased to find out that your top recommendation and runner up (feline natural and ziwi peak) are among the only three brands I used to feed my kitties when they were on canned food!! (the third brand is Instinct canned food for kitten) Totally agree it's super expensive especially given my cats ate them when they were kittens and their intake based on calorie needed is huge😂😂. But I am very glad that due to the fact that I fed them a very high quality canned food when they are babies(any gums/artificial flavors/added tuna/meat-by-product is a huge no for me when picking food for my kitties), they adjusted to raw diet very fast! So I highly recommend getting high quality canner food whenever budget allows. It gives your pet the opportunity to know the true flavors of meat, which is what they live on in the wild and definitely way more biologically appropriate!

Over the past 59 years (I got my first kitten for my 11th birthday and I just turned 70) I have had dozens of cats. In every case we bought whatever they would eat, every single bit was probably crap....Friskies, Cat Chow, Kibbles and Bits, the Walmart cheap stuff, etc. I would just fill a bowl and let them free feed. I don't remember why or when we started feeding them the wet stuff for breakfast. But it was a very rare occasion that any of them had any health problems. They were all active, playful and had soft, shiny coats. We shared whatever meat we were having with no I'll effects. Over the years more and more of the better, healthier foods have come along. But we continued to feed the same stuff they had all had for years. If it wasn't broke, why fix it? The past few years we have had just two so we moved up to Fancy Feast. Which now I've learned is no better. But they like it and they are thriving.

I'm from New Zealand and work in a pet store, I love the NZ pet food brands but sadly yes the palatability does miss often. My cat wont eat ziwi or feline natural. I managed to get him on Hills biscuits and give him dine wet food mostly because its the only one he will eat. My guess would be that if you have a new kitten then you would probably be likely to get them onto Ziwi or Feline natural. Or be lucky to not have a picky cat.

I feed my 3 cats Dr Elseys dry. They all LOVE it. (they also get wet food in the morning, but then this dry food for throughout the day). I do find that I do not have to feed them as much (due to it's higher caloric content), so it does last a bit longer. The main reason I decided to try this food is because one of my cats was diabetic - please note - WAS. I am convinced that switching her to this high quality, very very low carb content contributed to her diabetic remission. I am more than willing to spend a little more and not have to give her insulin every 12 hours. As others have indicated, it can be difficult to find it in stock. I do wish it was a little cheaper. I actually reached out to the company to see if they had a larger bag, as their largest bag is only 6 pounds. They did respond right away, but unfortunately that is the largest size and there was no plans to make a larger size.

When we adopted our first cat, I knew nothing about cats and from extensive research, decided to feed him Ziwipeak exclusively. Even though it’s suggested to slowly transition cats to a new food, I switched him cold turkey from the awful kibble he was getting at the shelter and he took to it immediately. He was super healthy and thriving on Ziwi for about 4 years and then they changed the formula. It used to be made with broth, and now it’s made with water and my cat won’t eat it anymore. I also had bought several cases trying to keep them interested that were completely dried out and seemed spoiled, which was very disappointing. I wanted to feed our second cat Ziwi, but couldn’t justify the price for food that kept getting wasted. So I scoured ingredients of all the expensive foods at our local pet store and bought Orijen, which cat 1 devours, and now snubs his nose at wet food. But I also now buy Instinct and Kona for cat 2 because I want her to only have wet food, but she loves to try to sneak the Orijen from cat 1 as well. Something about Orijen is very appealing even over the Ziwi dry food, which neither has ever been enthusiastic about. I may try a couple of the canned brands mentioned in the video for cat 1 since ideally I want him to eat wet food exclusively. Thanks for all of the info!

I think I have watched every video but my cats may not care what is best, they like what they like. I have Persians and with their very flat faces, they just lick up the canned foods. Many of what you are recommended are simply too dry for them. Mine only like Fancy Feast Creamy Delights in Salmon. They will “eat “some of the other flavors but if it is a Creamy Delight shred, the shreds are left behind and the cream part is gone. As far as dry food, they like Royal Canin Savor Selective. I think part of it is that there are different shapes that they are able to grab with their tongues. Corn is the first ingredient which you don’t recommend and I really wouldn’t either, but eating it is more important than not eating anything. They are hold outs if I try to replace with something else - it is amazing how they can “pick” out the Royal Canin and leave the other foods behind. Savor Selective has been almost impossible to find with the supply chain issues, I was able to find some this week and promptly ordered 5 bags to hopefully hold me over until things get sorted out supply chain wise.

Dry cat food shouldn't even be considered imho. It carries too much a risk of dehydration and digestion problems. Cats in the wild never eat anything dry and do not have a normal thirst mechanism like humans or dogs. Most cats don't drink enough water to make up for the missing water in dry food.

I am so frustrated with the cat food labeling and trying to understand if it is good or not. Something that should be so simple is just a nightmare. I am leaning more and more to making my own cat food especially after getting a box of 12 cans of Fancy Feast Naturals for kittens that was smothered in dead maggots upon delivery from Petco. This way there wont be any questions about what I am feeding my pets.

Just placed an order of about 15 authority pates, thru DoorDash, and it's the first time my total was under $20 🤣 yay!
Update: They now love Tiki wet food! I like how the pieces of meat are visible, like you can see pieces of fish, etc.

I have 3 cats, my 2 girls are skinny. My boy is overweight. He’s addicted to all the carbs in his dry kibble (hills science diet). I’m trying to get a canned food that makes everyone happy, but they can be very picky with texture. It’s frustrating at times. I’m in the process of switching them to Dr Elsey’s dry kibble to have while I figure out a wet food that makes them happy. I need a food without the carbs, wheat gluten, corn, and yucky fillers. It’s a very difficult process. I’m so disappointed at these “vet recommended” brands like Hills that have so many bad ingredients that has the potential to make your cat fat and unhealthy.
I really appreciate your videos. I need all the help I can get, lol.

The orange actor cat in your video is lovely as are all orange 🍊 tabby 🐈 cats are! Thank you for researching cats are difficult to feed especially if you want to take good care of them I guess when starting off with kittens it should be easier to find a healthy diet prior to them deciding on what they are willing to eat & becoming picky. I have 2 adult strays who are picky. Thank you for your hard work

The main difference I’ve noticed in the wellness canned adult vs wellness kitten (core version) is the addition of potato .. not sure why they need to add this to wet food. I don’t like that. I buy wet to avoid unnecessary plant matter.

The best cat food is home made barf style raw food, it's healthier and cheaper even if you choose to buy a grinder or chop it up yourself. If you don't have the time or its too "complicated", you're either lying or unwilling - you just want convenience at the expense of some of your cat's health. Even the fanciest cat food is filled with extraneous ingredients that are either less bioavailable (variety of reasons) or inadvertently dangerous (lentils, potatoes, peas, etc ingredients that may lead to cardiomyopathy even in cats), they're all overpriced in the end.
If you think your cat food is better because it has freeze dried venison, rabbit or green lipped mussels, then your cat food is more about you than your cat. Cat's are resilient; they can simply survive and thrive off cheap slivered steak supplemented with enough calcium. Hell, they can survive off meow mix and thats mostly just corn. This isn't directed at anyone specific and these conversations always get weary quick (nobody and not everyday is perfect) and while I empathize with wanting to just buy something, we spend way too much time lying to ourselves everyday.

I'm just wondering if you always feed from the plastic container in the video. I read that cats get whisker fatigue from deeper style dishes/bowls. I started feeding my cats on saucers and then purchased a shallow, oblong, elevated cat dish that seems to be working-out well for them. Thank you for all of your videos. They've been very helpful!
