I think the macrophages are maids because unlike the neutrophils, they mainly act as cleaners inside our body, macrophages are not the first fighters to deal with invaders. Yeah look at the shirt of Cancer It just shows "cell" like normal ones Also Cancer cells can get themselves a protein that works like "don't kill me" sign so that normal cells ignore it. I read that in a study
Red blood cell has protagonist hair. Basic Japanese animation trope, where the main characters are differentiated from supporting or background characters. It makes her stand out, signifying that she's different or special in some way, hence the cowlick and coloration. In Japanese culture, being a natural red-head is supposed to be special, considering most Japanese are historically black or brunette haired. It's seen in some of their folklore, and frequently pops up in anime storytelling. The cowlick is along the lines of the hair antennas from Love Hina, or the spikey hair seen in Yu Gi Oh, where the distinct colors also come into play. In short, sorry guys; her hair is simply a stylistic choice, not a medical reference beyond her being a red blood cell.
There isn't an anime for it yet (and I don't know if there ever will be one), but you should check out the manga "Cells at Work Black" (called as such because of the Japanese term "black company", or a company that has unreasonable and outrageously difficult working conditions). It's basically taking place inside of someone that is actively putting their own body through hell and not treating themselves right, and you get to see all of the cells inside suffer and try their best to function.
@@TriceeXO It is interesting! And kinda sad. It makes you stop and think about what you're doing to your own body, and what you are doing to harm it. There's a chapter that shows the reaction of the body to energy drinks and, while I don't drink them myself, I feel horrid because I'm a can-a-day soft drink drinker. And I put loads of sugar into my system which isn't good either.
stormybabe88 I’m a medical student so I kinda have a gist of what happens inside the body but seeing it in anime / manga form makes it all the more interesting. I’m looking forward to reading it 😍😍
I read the manga as soon as I read your comment & the result, it's quite scary... 😰 I don't want all my cell in the body suffering like that!! p/s: Now I know that all the characters is canon from this manga. I once see it in pinterest & I thought it's just some fan drawing. I don't know it come from this manga
Pretty much. What happens specifically is that NK cells communicate by sending message to any nucleated cell kinda saying "Hey show me your ID." If the ID is tampered, unmatched, misleading, stolen, or can't show any, the cell will be killed.
@@RedHairdo Cells that are enucleated like RBC shouldn't be a target for NK cells as RBCs don't have a way to replicate which is the problem with cancer cells. If you're also wondering "What about defective RBCs?(if there's any)" Once the defective RBCs reach the liver and spleen they are recycled; eaten by macrophages then reused as nourishment. So to simplify NK cells only target virus-infected or malignant (nucleated) cells.
@@StenThaBear I have already watched the Special Episode. It was very funny episode I should say. Doc should react to it. I hope David Productions make an Season 2 for this, because the Vol 6 of this manga are out or they just pre-order on amazon.
First episode of this series got me to watch Cells at Work and now after every episode I come watch your reaction to it! It's like the perfect bookend that helps expand on what I just watched.
I think maybe you would understand better if you searched for the 'Battle Maid' concept in anime. It's a type of 'killing machine' character who looks like the perfect Maid with the most perfect manners, and can often sometimes look like air heads. Except it's a cover for their real 'skills'. Here it's an 'english' (= well mannered) very attractive Maid with that air-head feeling in the way she speaks and also her mannerism. But she's without any doubt as skilled as a maid, as she is as an assassin.
Well I knew this guy was a something important because he's voiced by Akira Ishida, Akira Ishida wouldn't be pulled in to voice a random one bit background character.
I guess another reason macrophages are maids is because of how the series treats cell death. Instead of killing the character, its presented as the characters changing clothes (which the macrophage/maid then cleans up)
Well, kinda, but the scale of the analogy is a bit off, like the "bus" is actually the whole cell here... more like, a policeman sees someone wearing a wrong color shirt and proceeds to shoot the person :V (and the NK cell just kills anyone who's wearing a raincoat to hide what color their shirt is.)
Red hair cell might actually be a benign mutation; in case of emergency later in the show she was able to carry 3 times the oxygen, none other red cell was able to do so.
Wow! that NK Cells explanation really shed some light for me. I assumed she just luckily found out about that cell or something. Now I know the difference between those two. /imitates Dr Hope/ You learn something everyday 😂
To be perfectly honest, human anatomy and bio really freaked me out in school? Still kinda does, but you're making this a lot easier to understand, and it isn't freaking me out nearly as much. Thanks for doing this- it's super cool!
This is amaaaazing 🥺 I didn't quite understand how NK cell recognized the cancer cell when I watched it. I thought it was just for entertainment lol cause she looked so badass hahaha. Turns out, it actually does happen and NKC's job is to filter out damaged cells that the killer t are not able to recognize 😳 thanks!
EDIT: I just looked up more info and found out that you are actually a teaching fellow so i jumped the gun a bit! Dr. Hope, im not sure if you've ever thought about it up to now but you are amazing at breaking down concepts that otherwise would be lost in translation - Have you thought of maybe mid-nighting as a professor as-well sometime during your career? You would do really well at a teaching hospital or university. You obviously have a deep love of your field while also having a charismatic attitude that would allow really strong retention among your students.
4:45 - 4:51 They actually show this in Cells at Work Black. It's the darker version of Cells at Work which is set on an unhealthy body. So far, it has no anime form yet, only manga. Try checking it out if you have some time.
oh boy, i knew black is kinda dark but this information/ confirmation is hard ^^.... R rated anime anyone ? :D i think this will never happen, sadly :/

That cells diagram of ours should be sold as shirts merch. A very good and cute idea, to also boost education. P.S: Why do you have a sign at the back saying 'I Didn't think so'? I like it xD
I started reading the original work Cells at Work a few days ago and the order is different and there's room for more explanations in story in the chapters. But the entire manga is more elaborate in its explanations (it has cell relationship charts and so on) and has a medical advisor, so it's actually really cool. I really suggest reading it, as it's also available in English (both digitally and physically). I think I'll be learning a lot from the original work and from Dr. Hope about the body (and medicine) before I even get to studying biology on secondary school level to get my university qualifications (for natural sciences - I got qualifications for social sciences and liberal arts, but I'm going into physics after many years of not knowing what to do). Something this show did for me (and also Dr. Hope because I've been watching your reaction videos long after watching Cells At Work) was to not freak out when one my one-year-old got a fever that didn't go away and then peaked at above 40°C. By not freaking out, I'm not saying we didn't take the poor thing to a doctor when the fever got above 40, but I didn't start to go over all the causes of the seemingly nasty cold. I mean, I kind of know what's going on in the body in a better way than before. It turned out to be a bacterial infection in the airways and we got antibiotics. The doctor on call said he wasn't unsure but put the diagnosis in the medical journal as pneumonia (which we found out 4 days later when we went in for a regular checkup to see how the little one was growing and to get a blood test for the P-CRP level and the nurse we regularly see checked the journal). Baby's fine now, a couple of days off antibiotics and I was really glad that I now understand how the body works against bacteria and virus and can understand the symptoms much better. Understanding what actually is going on in the body and why makes it so much easier to sleep at night. Anyway, great episode Dr. Hope! I love your explanations, am looking forward to your reactions of the next episode and really hope there's a second season, even if I'm now reading the original work the anime was adapted from. Thank you for having your channel.
Lol its a shame you didnt use a wanted poster analogy for the cytotoxic t cell. Even though i understood the concept before your analogy thinking of it like that is pretty cool. Especially if you factored in facial recogniction type alerts lol
You should specify whether you want it debunked from the perspective of the theoretical idealist 'communism' that has no basis in reality or the actual totalitarian globalist enslavement communism that is true communism. Its not that it would make a difference because neither sense of communism applies. But the method of debunking that they are in any way communistic is different.
I think you can make a new video of 5 things may have missed after ep.7 . I already had a few: 1, The cell that sends reports of nausea and emesis is a Nerve Cell according to the author 2, The Memory T Cell in ep 5 is actually a Memory B Cell, since the memory t is in ep 3 with the pink notebook 3, The gun of B Cell is made from the structure of different types of antibodies. For example his gun in ep.5 is the real shape of IgE antibody 4, natural killer cells have chances to attack Cytotoxic t cells since NK is one of the major factor that causes autoimmune diseases and just a note, the chapter 27 of the manga is a specific chapter that describes the differentiation of granulocytes and the Left Shift of band cells.
I think the reason her hair is red, besides to play into her role as a RED blood cell, is to set her apart from the rest of the RBCs, since he is technically the main character for the most part, so you can easily notice her or pick her out from a crowd.
I love the little details in the show like the red blood cell girl changing her jacket from light red to dark red depending on what she's transporting.
Bright or unusual hair is a tactic commonly seen in manga and anime to help tell important characters apart from less important ones, especially if the art style suffers from Same Face Syndrome (where every character has the same basic face design, which can make it surprisingly difficult to tell characters apart or make them more memorable). I imagine they colored our heroine's hair red to help her stand out while still sticking to the color coding of the cells. You could argue that White Blood Cell doesnt have this same hair tactic, but he actually does in the form of his hair hanging over one eye. No other white blood cell has white hair that hangs over their eye, at least not in the same iconic manner that his does.
*explains analogy for a cell* Police sees a criminal on a bus and proceed to destroy the bus with everyone in it... boy am I glad that's not how it works in real life!
I know that these videos are older now but I just found this show, which led to me finding this channel (going to go through more scrubs commentary later) but when I was watching Cells at Work yesterday I was like, "Man, I am so excited to watch Dr.Hope's video on this tomorrow!"
Really love how you break down the concepts that are mainly lost on us non-medical students while watching the show. The way you explained the terms and how the cells work is also very fun and enjoyable, combining them with your funny commentary. It makes it very easy to understand and super fun to watch. I would 100% recommend your channel to students learning biology and medicine.
I think that the reason why the red blood cell has red hair isn't due to a mutation but due to a general rule on character design. She is the protagonist so she needs to be easier to spot than the other characters. So she is given red hair and yellow eyes that pop out, while the others are given inoffensive brown colours that don't stand out as much. This way your eyes are immediately drawn to her instead of some background character. This is so that you can quickly see the most relevant thing going on; what is happening to the main characters. Yet her hair and eyes don't stand out too much and become an eyesore; this is good colour choice. This show in general has good character design as you can easily distinguish between different cell types and immediately identify who are the main characters. The hardest one to distinguish is the main neutrophil, as he has an extremely limited colour palette. However even he has tells. Only his left eye is ever shown and his right eye is covered by hair. Even if there is a camera angle where we should see his right eye it shouldn't be drawn, as it is a fairly important detail. Just as the main red blood cell has a cowlick that curls to the right of her face, you need these tells on every detailed shot of their faces.
Watching your series feels like renewing my experience of watching the anime. The anime series itself is intriguing, making me realize how intricate humans body are, and with your series (among with your wonderful audiences) I learn even a lot more! Will be looking forward to watching the next eps with you, doc :>

The reason why the red blood cell has red hair, is because in every anime, there's always that one character that you know will be the main character because of their hair style and color, while the others are just brown or black with a simple face and eye color :) P.S. Love your stuff!
If you really think about it, the "body" that the characters live in is actually pretty strong. There have been many occasions where viruses and bacteria invaded, but the immune system is so strong that it can kill these guys rather well. There were only a few moments where medicine was administered, but most of the time the immune system fights these off easily.
Why does our red blood cell have red hair? Well let me tell you she has a verry serious mutation that causes a verry dangerous sickness we call: main-character syndrome. It causes a person to have verry notable features so any random person will recognise her as a main-character.

I thought that was a creative license on the author's part but since you whipped out the analogy with the bus and police cars, it actually happens! NK Cell is really amazing! Thank you Dr. Hope. I knew I would get the answer once I watch your reaction video of this episode!
Yeah look at the shirt of Cancer
It just shows "cell" like normal ones
Also Cancer cells can get themselves a protein that works like "don't kill me" sign so that normal cells ignore it.
I read that in a study
This can explain how cancer cells manage to become a real cancer, they basically disguise themselves so they can spread more easily.
"I wonder if her red hair has any symbolic meaning?"
Uh yes. She is the protagonist. Welcome to anime.
I'm not finish reading it yet. But yeah, this one has the darker side of the story... 😶
Wow that sounds super interesting 😯
Soo NK cells are like "hey that looks wierd? Kill it!"
Edit: One year later and I saw my misspelling, my bad
Pretty much. What happens specifically is that NK cells communicate by sending message to any nucleated cell kinda saying "Hey show me your ID." If the ID is tampered, unmatched, misleading, stolen, or can't show any, the cell will be killed.
@@medjov1061 NK:hey your hair is different by one inch, did you cut your hair?
Nucleus: y-yes...
Nk: *stab*
@@memegumin YOU ARE NOT PAID TO CUT YOUR HAIR! REEEE!!!!
@@medjov1061 What about cells without a nucleus, like the red blood cells?
@@RedHairdo Cells that are enucleated like RBC shouldn't be a target for NK cells as RBCs don't have a way to replicate which is the problem with cancer cells. If you're also wondering "What about defective RBCs?(if there's any)" Once the defective RBCs reach the liver and spleen they are recycled; eaten by macrophages then reused as nourishment.
So to simplify NK cells only target virus-infected or malignant (nucleated) cells.
Don't give Doc spoiler for the next episode... 😉😉😉😉

FINALLY! BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE.
You should watch the Next Episode, Doc!
And the episode 10, and the special, those will be fun, i think.
I aspire to be one 😂😂😂
Well I knew this guy was a something important because he's voiced by Akira Ishida, Akira Ishida wouldn't be pulled in to voice a random one bit background character.
I guess another reason macrophages are maids is because of how the series treats cell death. Instead of killing the character, its presented as the characters changing clothes (which the macrophage/maid then cleans up)
So, using the police car analogy, the police car sees a passenger that doesn't fit on the bus and proceeds to fire an RPG and destroy the bus. :V
police brutality is in all of us.
Akainu would be proud.
No, the police car ate the bus
Yes, but the police car just eat the bus If they are looking for the criminal with a picture.
Well, kinda, but the scale of the analogy is a bit off, like the "bus" is actually the whole cell here... more like, a policeman sees someone wearing a wrong color shirt and proceeds to shoot the person :V
(and the NK cell just kills anyone who's wearing a raincoat to hide what color their shirt is.)
Yay! Dr. Hope rescuing me from dreaded boredom!
10:20 "Sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar" - Sigmund Freud.
It was propably a shock reaction by the character without any scientific basis.
As a nurse I love watching these. Keep up the vids and keep teaching!
Red hair cell might actually be a benign mutation; in case of emergency later in the show she was able to carry 3 times the oxygen, none other red cell was able to do so.
Good point
Wow! that NK Cells explanation really shed some light for me. I assumed she just luckily found out about that cell or something. Now I know the difference between those two.
/imitates Dr Hope/ You learn something everyday 😂
1:08 Mate, you deserve a like just for that Ahoge !
To be perfectly honest, human anatomy and bio really freaked me out in school? Still kinda does, but you're making this a lot easier to understand, and it isn't freaking me out nearly as much. Thanks for doing this- it's super cool!
This channel has officially become more important than anything.
Literally stopped watching another video for this.
SAME
Me too!!!
i lost it at @5:55 .... blue alien in a cycle helmet LOL
hmm
Lmao
HAHAHAHA
This is amaaaazing 🥺 I didn't quite understand how NK cell recognized the cancer cell when I watched it. I thought it was just for entertainment lol cause she looked so badass hahaha. Turns out, it actually does happen and NKC's job is to filter out damaged cells that the killer t are not able to recognize 😳 thanks!
10:57 I love seeing that White Blood Cell was protecting Red before we knew them. So cute.☺️
"I wonder if there is some significance to the red blood cell having red hair."
I see you have discovered the anime's Main Character.
And if all else fails he can use this anime as a teaching supplement so it won't be boring!
Dr. Hope is REALLY good at predicting these 😂
4:45 - 4:51 They actually show this in Cells at Work Black.
I really liked the bus & police example I think it helped me understand the episode better than watching it alone
And that’s why I like your reactions to this anime .. hope you will continue reacting to it !!
That cells diagram of ours should be sold as shirts merch. A very good and cute idea, to also boost education.
P.S: Why do you have a sign at the back saying 'I Didn't think so'? I like it xD
JakulaithWolff my eyes kept getting drawn to it too, lol.
10:27 "Did she just Oddjob him?!"
I can't breathe XD
Lol its a shame you didnt use a wanted poster analogy for the cytotoxic t cell. Even though i understood the concept before your analogy thinking of it like that is pretty cool. Especially if you factored in facial recogniction type alerts lol
So you're saying my cells are communists?
Mary Sue gulags were full of "comrades"
You should specify whether you want it debunked from the perspective of the theoretical idealist 'communism' that has no basis in reality or the actual totalitarian globalist enslavement communism that is true communism.
Its not that it would make a difference because neither sense of communism applies. But the method of debunking that they are in any way communistic is different.
I didn’t really expected to start an academic discussion about social theories, it was supposed to be a rather tounge in cheek comment.
It’s more socialist because there is no real dictator only working toward a common goal

How I'm studying for college atm, thank you! Please don't stop, I finally enjoy studying.
I absolutely love these kind of series that spread knowledge in a innovative way I think they are much more better than the " rest of the series" ❤️
I think you can make a new video of 5 things may have missed after ep.7 . I already had a few:
1, The cell that sends reports of nausea and emesis is a Nerve Cell according to the author
2, The Memory T Cell in ep 5 is actually a Memory B Cell, since the memory t is in ep 3 with the pink notebook
3, The gun of B Cell is made from the structure of different types of antibodies. For example his gun in ep.5 is the real shape of IgE antibody
4, natural killer cells have chances to attack Cytotoxic t cells since NK is one of the major factor that causes autoimmune diseases
and just a note, the chapter 27 of the manga is a specific chapter that describes the differentiation of granulocytes and the Left Shift of band cells.
Ive been waiting for this one. Always wondered what the difference was between the killer t cells and nk cells.
*The Doctor is IN*
Omg you're back reviewing Cells at Work! Thank you so much doctor!!!!!
What a nice content to start my weekend 😊
Our red blood cell:gets old

When the Voice Actor Akira Ishida is so recognizable and prominent that you know that regular cell isn't just some background character
4:55 Actually appears in Cell at Work Black.
*explains analogy for a cell*
Police sees a criminal on a bus and proceed to destroy the bus with everyone in it... boy am I glad that's not how it works in real life!
Honestly I am super hyped for episode 7.
It was one of my favorite channels (easily in top-3), of 2018. And judging by this start, it may as well be the case in 2019. Keep up the great work!
I discover this channel new year!
Just as the main red blood cell has a cowlick that curls to the right of her face, you need these tells on every detailed shot of their faces.
it's amazing to see you predict things correctly in the show based on medical conjecture

I really love this anime as I'm studying medicine too and recognise all these things done in a really amazing way! Btw the next episode is so good as well!
I really enjoy these videos you made they were actually what brought me to your channel 😂 can't wait for the next reaction video :3
The reason why the red blood cell has red hair, is because in every anime, there's always that one character that you know will be the main character because of their hair style and color, while the others are just brown or black with a simple face and eye color :)
