Real DOCTOR reacts to CELLS AT WORK! // Episode 5 // "Cedar Pollen Allergy"

- What happens when you have an allergy? We find out by watching Cells at Work (Hataraku Saibou) from a real doctor's perspective! I'll be breaking down what's on screen, reacting to the scenes and explaining a little more about the medicine and how the cells work.
We learn about allergy, antigens, antibodies, mast cells and even steroid Terminators!
As with all these reviews I skim over a lot of medical terms, please leave a comment if you want any clarifications!

I actually moved to Japan a little over a year ago and the typical medications people use can be a bit different from the western world.
In terms of pollen allergies, people don't typically take antihistamines, and instead wear surgical masks to limit the amount of antigens entering their bodies. People where I live only typically take medicine when the symptoms are especially bad, and rather than histamines it would be steroids. This might help explain why the show went the steroid route rather than the antihistamine route for the episode.
On that note, an old surgeon in my med school who traveled the world also noted that different population in the world has vastly different sensitivity and reaction to anesthetic agents. Interesting stuff.
I mean its a japanese anime so it makes sense that they orientate on more common things there (like with the sea water/food stuff in the last episode in combination with raw fish)
@@chunt5584 That makes sense - Isolated populations (even if not nearly as much as they used to be) tend to share similiar traits, including suseptability to certain sicknesses. And since Alergies are usually not leathal, they're not stopping the person from passing it on.
it also explains why the plant pollen is from cedar trees and not, like, ragweed or grasses, which is what's common in america. i was also really surprised about how cells at work chose to use steroids, because americans tend to see steroids as a big boy drug that's really only used when otc options don't work
Well that explains a lot. I was seriously nitpicky about the whole steroid thing.
Terminator-steroid doesn't care who's fault it is. Terminator-steroid just wants the body to just chill out for a while
So.... Terminator-steroid is a mom?

In Japan, after the war, we actively planted trees to meet the increasing demand for timber, but we still have many left over because we chose cedar trees that grew fast at the time. There are still many people with hay fever. In Japan, 1 in 3 people suffer from cedar pollen. I am also troubled by pollen other than cedar trees. I'm sorry if my English didn't' make sense.
Hey, your english is good! Omedetou!
Literally the only error you currently have is an erroneous apostrophe; you've got a level of English comprehension that I would associate with those that use their second language as a major component of their job. That's fluency nearly on par with native speakers, and the only reason I say "nearly" is because the structure is a bit strange- certainly nothing that could be considered incorrect, just not perfectly natural. As a scientist, myself, I absolutely loved the series and their take on the intra/intercellular communications and how everything worked out, finally even bringing up phagocytosis, showing the ridiculous overreaction, showing how useless eosinophylls would be toward bacterium, while being a powerhouse against parasites, and the adorable platelets... And Dr. Hope's take on this all did excellent in breaking down the highly complex situations and comparisons and simplifying it, further-explaining what the show only touches on in a more technical sense.
It's actually pretty funny; because, I'm literally going through a good number of these situations (Outside, of course, of the parasite and the food poisoning). It's nice to see how the anime heroes in my body are combating the illness and allergic reactions I'm currently facing, as well as how the steroid I just had to take unleashed a damn robot to wreck the membranes of my body's cells.

The way I see all the destruction and mayhem seemingly being caused by the pollen is how the cells perceive the 'invasion.' What I like about the steroid is that it basically "stopped" everyone by attacking them but if you pay attention nobody is actually killed, so it's this shows way of showing how it's using extreme force to stop the reaction of the cells but as you said, isn't actually trying to kill them, but sadly can have some side effects and cause its own damage in its attempt to help.
Obviously not 100% accurate and I'm not educated in any of this at all, but I caught that little detail while watching the episode myself, considering how "powerful" this medicine is, I was surprised it wasn't just killing the cells without issue and instead missing a lot, which led to this little theory of mine. Love this show and I love your reactions to it, your explanations just make it even better.
I feel like it's not necessarily a conspiracy theory from the memory cell, but more of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yay! New episode. Thank you for these! I'm currently in Alaska still recovering from the recent earthquake, and this is really helping my morale stay up. Perfect timing
I had a hive (urticaria) breakout one time and the way the episode demonstrates medication use for mild to severe allergies (such as hydrocortisone or a higher potency such as methylprednisolone) makes me feel a bit bad for my own cells in my body. Really important to stay hydrated and relaxed too. ;)
To be fair the representation of a steroid like hydrocortisone was a bit exaggerated in this episode, as well. But it fit a theme of over-exaggeration being the problem. A cool thing with the show, though, is you never hear about the body but if they're getting steroids for a standard pollen reaction, they must have had a very severe reaction and possibly even ended up in the hospital. Otherwise much less potent medicine would have been fine.
Dr.Hope explains a steroid better than I could, but they don't cause as much collateral damage as represented in the anime.
Sick person: “Are you a doctor?”
Me: “No but I watched this cool anime so I’m totally certified for this”
Reminds me of “You can fly a plane?” “No but I’ve played multiple videos games so I got this”
You know...I'm something of a scientist myself
"Have you gone to flight school?"
"I took a crash course."
you know, i'm something of a doctor myself.
There is a story that goes around that this actually happened, something happened to him and the person who said he could fly the plane, found out after the incident he learned playing flight simulation 🤣
Thanks for reviewing this episode! As a sufferer of allergic rhinitis for more than a decade, it really made me feel better. Antihistamines are my saviors but yknow, they make me sleepy.
It sucks having allergic rhinitis bec it's difficult to do things such as touching dusty things, hugging teddy bears, too much face powder, perfumes, and other things. I love how this episode covers the whole process for the non-medical people to learn. Very educational!
I feel like I’ve been waiting for this episode forever!
(I sneezed due to allergies three times while writing this 😂)
I can't even finish the anime until he makes a video about the episode so that I fully understand what happened, lol. Well worth the wait though and about the only time I'm like BUT EDUCATION I need to know!
Same situation here.
oh my god, he has a cat.

@@DrHopeSickNotes Ahww, she's so beautiful! I guess she just wanted to learn about antigens too :)
Ovaries explode.
The host of this body, for me, would definitely be a military man/woman or someone in the force, could be a police as well. They could also be a travel journalist or someone who studies the wild like Bear Grylls because damn the host has been through a lot...
or a kid
They had a very manly sneeze no way their a kid.

Best medical advise I've heard all day! 👍
clericneokun 'advise' is used in caution: such as: "advise me, sir." 'advice' is the correct word you're trying to spell: "what's your advice?" referring to giving beforehand information.
it may not seem to have a difference, but there IS. *_LOL_*
