Vanda orchids are such magnificent plants. They just take up a lot of space and require high maintenance that's why when they bloom, you do feel rewarded!!
amiel polidario Indeed they can get to be quite massive plants...good for the ones that have space and bad for the ones that don't...and they can become quite tedious to take care of with their daily waterings...that is why I stayed away from them for years...but ever since I have discovered just how magnificent they are when you take great care of them...I have gotten Vanda addicted...I have about 6 of them now...and I have my eye on another one...hoping to get it tomorrow...HELP...SOMEONE SAVE ME FROM MYSELF! LOL!
HA HA HA!!! That is so sweet of you to say!!! Thanks for joining me on my orchid adventures!!! Wishing you the absolute best in your orchid adventures!!! HAPPY GROWING AND STAY AWESOME! :)
I took your advice and bought my first vanda. I bought a vanda miniatum that should be arriving tomorrow I hope. I can't wait to see what I'm getting my self into. I'm hopping not to kill it and if I do have it I'll send it to you for vanda cpr.
Richard Lewis YAAAAAAAAAY YOU!!! I am so proud of you...I taught you well....LOL!!! Would love to see it when it arrives...I have finally created my Facebook page...be sure to connect with me there as well ( facebook.com/MyOrchidAdventures ). Congratulations in advance, dear friend...and I am excited for you...and indeed....if anything goes wrong...my emergency orchid clinic is always open...just can't guarantee that I am going to be willing to send it back! LOL!
Fantastic, big sis. Thanks for the tip regarding vandas and congratulations on the max.tena. Only you can bloom the impossible. I will keep the misters in low when I go to work..the humidity will be off the charts..
LOL!!! Your much too kind.... :) ...Thank you for watching and truly hope it helps...and to be honest with you I haven't always done well with Vandas...for the longest I only kept one and I still to this day don't know how she managed to survive (the biggest one growing all the roots and spiking). It was about 4 months ago that I started taken up collecting orchids again (stopped collecting about 11 years ago)...and it has sparked quite a passion in me that I thought was gone...so this is my 2nd time around and I'm making up for lost time. :)
Thank you for joining me on my orchid adventure...my mission is to learn and grow together...there is always something we can learn from one another if we are open to it...and because I have a deep passion for orchids and plants I am constantly learning how to become a better Gardner and whatever information I can share...indeed I am more than happy to....again thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!
3.03 Apart from fixation and clinging these roots have a special type of tissue , the velamen , highly spongy in nature , capable of absorbing moisture and water and give it to the plant.
You are absolutely right...and it functions as a sponge to absorb...but it also acts to retain and store the moisture as well...they are amazing plants and that's why I love them so! :)
Hey PictureMaria1 I think you may be our vanda expert??I am drooling over your garden!!I have a vanda related question..My vanda just bloomed for the third time since March and the blooms seem much smaller than the two times before...did I do something wrong??do you think they may need their time to grow while they are open?? i believe nothing has changed in its care pffff Thanks for taking the time to read! I love your videos and can't wait for an update on the extreme phal propagation...i am so curious! keep up the good work!
Ha ha ha....Vanda expert....not quite sure on that....but I do love them!!! and blooming 3 times in such a short period...WOW!!! Although I can't really say why it has done that...but since there has been no change in care, I am assuming that the smaller blooms are just an indication of depleted energy level...usually vandas do not bloom so often and have time to replenish their energy for their next set of blooms..but in your case it is blooming back to back...so every time it blooms it has less energy....keeping in mind that the blooms and seeds are what the plant focuses most of its energy on. I wouldn't fret though...enjoy the blooms however it comes...and let nature take its beautiful course...if the plant is not showing any signs of weakness...then it will be alright...it will eventually get its rest period. Thank you for your kind comments and indeed it is a pleasure to meet you and have you accompany me on my adventures. HAPPY ORCHID GROWING!
PictureMaria1 Thank you so much for the reply!!hopefully this babe will stop blooming and start growing some roots soon hahaha good thing is that the flowers opened but they keep growing so all is good!! I think it receives a lot of light that is why....but as days grow smaller this vanda must take a break hahahaha seriously i think it is a very good hybrid...by the looks of it (because I have had it since March and it is big) it must be blooming all the time!
Mir Buys Hey there just curious to know what type of Vanda is it and how is it doing now....also something else you may be able to do to induce more foliage and root growth is to give it fertilizer that is made more for that (not the bloom booster)...and if you want to force it into a rest period you can move it into an area with a lot less light....high light is a key element to making it bloom and less light will cause it to focus more on it's plant structure....but when you want to get it to bloom again make sure you acclimate it slowly into the light....as it can have a poor effect on the plant if you give it too much too soon. I am hoping all is well with you and the Vanda....and if you have any pics to share join me on my Facebook page...I would love to see this heavy bloomer of an orchids!!! HAPPY GROWING!
Hi Maria, just discovered you and am enjoying your videos. Thanks for posting. Ive always heard that you need to water Vandas everyday but i live in Orlando and always forget to water mine sometimes for weeks on end in our dry season and they they always flower pretty good for me. I also have the pencil looking Vanda growing up trees and palms and they grow like crazy for me.Thank You Will
That is so awesome that you have such hardy vandas! I water mine often and just love how well they do for me sometimes I can't seem to get them to stop blooming! LOL! I think orchids are pretty strong plants they can tolerate a lot...but to get optimum care from them we have to try and imitate their natural habitat as much as possible. I know with mine they are in tip top shape because of how much attention I pay them...I did have a vanda in the past that I neglected often and I will have to say it never did bloom for me...until I turned over a new vanda leaf! LOL! But if you are doing exceedingly well with yours then congratulations and keep up the not so good work! LOL! ;)
Maria, I just got my first Vanda, how big does it need to be before I can remove it from pot and hang bare rooted? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.
You can have it growing bare rooted as a seedling if you want...it is all a matter of preference...I have had some that have never seen a basket...as soon as I got them I simply attached them to a sturdy wire. an important thing to remember is if it is in media to gradually get it used to drier conditions...by slowly removing media and once you have it completely removed and barefooted ensure that you can water it regularly and preferably at least once a day. Hope this helps. HAPPY GROWING!
Yes I do...and I will try to find it...I also have a playlist for my vanda adventures as well. Thanks so much for joining me on my orchid adventures and HAPPY GROWING! :)
Yes I have done some propagations as well by that method...but the only problem is the babies take soooooooo loooooong to grow!!! I am just too impatient so I do much propagating with my vandas.
Not that I know of...other than trying to encourage new growths by using enhancements such as coconut water, and aloe but I have not been able to prove that yet from my experiment in the past...but I will continue to conduct experiments to try and learn different ways...If I find a definite method...I will be sure to let you know. :)
Hi Maria, can you please please tell me if your Rhynchostylis has bloomed or do you have a video of it blooming? I have one but haven't yet bloomed. Huhu but it seemed healthy.
Great video! I loooove orchids but mine are showing me no love at all. I removed my vanda from it's wooden box where it was packed in stones as I thought the roots needed to hang free. Since then, the roots have gone dry and shrivelled and the leaves are turning yellow from the bottom up. How can I save this plant?
...Thank you so much for watching...and I am so sorry to hear about your vanda...but no worries...that is usually a natural occurrence when you change your orchids from one condition to another...it isn't used to it's roots drying out so quickly...so they may die off...but continue to watering them daily...and you will eventually find new roots growing to replace the dying or dead ones. Good luck and HAPPY GROWING! :)
Dear Maria, one of my vanda loose all of her roots... They all r rooted .... I put her in swc but still no new tips on it.... did I pot her with bark & coconut husk? I'm from Bangladesh... its really so hot in my country... Tnx in advance....
your voice...I love it lol I could listen to you all day haha. My Vanda is pure purple with no fragrant. I was wondering can these orchids get runners so i can take cuttings of them?
Why thank you very much and that's awfully kind of you to say...Vandals do not create their babies from runners...but will create them on their stem area...either naturally or through a forced propagation....here is a video that I made all about keikis...hope this helps and thank you for watching :) ruclips.net/video/vjRsxwfDWrs/видео.html
i got a vanda orchid and the leaves is like paper very dry, what can i do to help it, to look plump and healthy . i have it over two months now.. and the bloom didnot last a week when got it.. it send out alot of roots i tied it on a driff wood...but the leaf still looking like paper.i watch your videos alot.... every day and you have really help me understand more about orchids and i love love orchids. i had many when i move to the beach side but some of them didnot make it ... so am try again....
Hey there Simon...okay so I am assuming that this vanda at some point went through a very dry spell where it did not receive water for a long amount of time and is the reason why the leaves were paper thin...if that is the case I will tell you that it can take a very long time for the orchid to regain it's plumpness and in some cases (depending how dehydrated it was) may never fully recover. I have had rescues that have taken almost a year to get back to being in decent condition...so you have to be patient...and that also goes for it blooming...it may be a while for that as well....my best advice is to water it often and fertilize it, don't expect too much from it and still appreciate for being a wonderful orchid that it is....I believe it you don't stress on it as much...before you know it, it will be back to good health...I wish you the best with it and I am sending warm wishes of a speedy recovery...Thank you so much for joining me on my orchid adventures...HAPPY GROWING!
I was told by as another orchid lover, that I should install a separate misting system for the vandas, what do you think About that, big sis. I should group them together?
Depends on the reason...and how many vandas you plan on having. If it's because the vandas require more watering and humidity level then the rest of the orchids then it is a valid reason to put in 2nd misting system. Is it necessary...not really you can grow vandas without it...should you do it? It all depends on your lifestyle, how much time you have or don't have and how much you want invest in it. Now if you plan on having a gazillion vandas and other orchids that require daily misting then it may be feasible as a time and energy saver. I keep a majority of my orchids outside in my garden...and have my orchids divided out in different sections...some I water daily, others every other day...and others I water once a week...it does get tedious watering with my hose sprayer...but I'm in my garden every single day anyways and during the night it receives a natural mist in the air also...so for my lifestyle and the way I grow my orchids it works for me...so it's really all about coming up with a formula and a system that's best suited for you and your life style. :)
I purchased two more last night from home depot. The new shipment came in and I had my pick of the litter. One has a large keiki. I'm not afraid of vandas anymore, thanks to RUclips.
That's awesome and congrats to you for acquiring two new family members!!! Are you going to separate baby from mama? I've seen some pretty awesome specimen plants where they don't separate and they let mama and babies stay together all intact...gives such a natural appeal....again congrats...oh and what are the colors and patterns?
Vandas are so awesome...the sickly one that I have has perked back up extremely in less than a week...she will be back to normal in no time...I am so happy that I got her...she loves my garden...although I got to keep an eye on her...She keeps flirting with the blue one!!! Sheeeeeesh! LOL!
Hey there Wade, I have only had 2 Vandas that have been with me for a while...the others have only been with me 3 or less months...the two that I have for awhile were kept outdoors all year round...and during the winter season they were on my porch...protected from any frost. To my understanding my latest vanda, the Sansai Blue can also tolerate cold temperatures...oh and the Vanda Teres was also left outdoors in my garden. I more than likely will keep my Vandas on my porch during the cold season.
Oh and the my biggest Vanda was in horrible condition about 3 months ago...I didn't dedicate hardly any time to her...it's amazing how 3 months of complete dedication can make...now she's growing hardy roots everywhere and spiking! ...This is the same Vanda that had only given me 1 spike in 4 years...so indeed this has been quite a learning lesson for me. Thank you for your kind comments and hoping you are well Wade...and by the way...are you the Wade that shared your story on Miss Orchid Girls channel? If so...you're story is so inspiring and very deep...again thanks so much Wade...and HAPPY GROWING! :)
Yes, that's me. Every time I walk into my greenhouse I think of Dad. I really need to do a video on the greenhouse itself. It is controlled by a very sophisticated unit and is performing incredibly well. I never saw a Cattleya put out 3 new leads from one growing point before but this spring it has happened more than once. Be well, dear, and happy growing.
Wade's Orchids ...what a treasure to have such find memories of your dad attached to your life long passion...you have such an inspiring story...I am sure when you grateful to your father to have provided you the atmosphere that raised such a beautiful and passionate purpose...you are such a kind hearted gentleman and your father has indeed left a tremendous legacy in you...something you should be proud of. I've listened to your story several times and I am always uplifted and inspired....indeed to live out your days with the peace and assurance that your purpose is fulfilled...I too one day long to live with no regrets and passionate about what I do...for a living and for a purpose...I'm proud of you....and commend you for all of your accomplishments...and your nursery surpasses beauty in it's mortal state...it is elevated to a higher realm. Be well dear friend... :)
You almost made me cry, Maria. Thank you so much. I never dreamed to have this incredible group of friends online. I am so thankful for every day. Hapyy growing, dear.
Yes they are my babies so i have 2 sons many daughters and the youngest is Vanda and she is doing well but am somehow like worry because of her green yellowish color i think i got her suddenly too much light from where she came from, a cold place shere she was inside to a very warmer place outside 🤔
I am so sorry I do not ship out of the US. :( ...and yes the Philippines...oh how I miss the Philippines! I am hoping you are doing well and HAPPY GROWING! :)
Lol..I work 10-12hours a day. I dont have time to water as often, thats why the vandas are stifled. The extra system would aide them, l hope with their blooming cycle. They would be separated from orchid that dont require the extra attention. I want to do whats best for my hobby...and l am determined...

To hang them up
Вітання з України! Супер цікаве відео! Дуже красиві Ванди 😍👍

Get ready for you vanda videos to go up. I need to learn because I have one in the mail #PhalPal
What is the name of orchid that is shown at 4:35 of the video
Do you have a video that cover how to water and feed those Vanda ? Thank you.
Yes I do...and I will try to find it...I also have a playlist for my vanda adventures as well. Thanks so much for joining me on my orchid adventures and HAPPY GROWING! :)
Here is one that I found... ruclips.net/video/ObUHtudYvPs/видео.html
What kind of vanda is the bloomed one you have? The blueish one.
I believe that was the pachara delight.
In order for me to get new pups I cut the mother plant in the middle but i a sure it has a roots in each stem which i cut
Yes I have done some propagations as well by that method...but the only problem is the babies take soooooooo loooooong to grow!!! I am just too impatient so I do much propagating with my vandas.
The blue colour is so gorgeous - is it really that blue or is it more light purple in person? And is that the Coerulea Rothschild variety?
do you other to grow pups beside from cutting mother plant?
Not that I know of...other than trying to encourage new growths by using enhancements such as coconut water, and aloe but I have not been able to prove that yet from my experiment in the past...but I will continue to conduct experiments to try and learn different ways...If I find a definite method...I will be sure to let you know. :)
Hi Maria, can you please please tell me if your Rhynchostylis has bloomed or do you have a video of it blooming? I have one but haven't yet bloomed. Huhu but it seemed healthy.
I have about 5 of them and out of 5 only 1 has bloomed. I keep them outdoors and they just don't seem happy enough to give me a bloom. :(
Love the video. 😍

Dear Maria, one of my vanda loose all of her roots... They all r rooted .... I put her in swc but still no new tips on it.... did I pot her with bark & coconut husk? I'm from Bangladesh... its really so hot in my country... Tnx in advance....
So beautiful 😍
where do you get the rescue orchids from ?
I normally find them in Lowe's or Home Depot's.
your voice...I love it lol I could listen to you all day haha. My Vanda is pure purple with no fragrant. I was wondering can these orchids get runners so i can take cuttings of them?

I have a vanda with very big leaves and his flower similiar to catleyas I want to know the name how can I do
can you from them indoors

Hapyy growing, dear.

i need it for my homework
Lol..I work 10-12hours a day. I dont have time to water as often, thats why the vandas are stifled. The extra system would aide them, l hope with their blooming cycle. They would be separated from orchid that dont require the extra attention. I want to do whats best for my hobby...and l am determined...
So you answered your question...listen to your heart and always do what is best for you. :)
