I love watching ALL of your videos as I have learned so much from you! I have been growing Phalanopsis orchids several years and have very good results with them and have rebloomed them many times! I am branching out to different types of orchids so am watching your videos to learn the care of my new seedlings/divisions. I have added Vanda, Cattleya, Oncideum, tolumnia and dendrobiums. I am very watchful over every aspect of these new babies of mine and know I will be waiting a long time for them to bloom but this time will give me the insight as to how to properly care for them and what they like or don't like! Thanks so much for your very interesting videos!
One of my first orchids I bought was a vanda Rhynchostylis retusa. I lost it to a small storm (a banana tree fell on it and it started to rot I couldn’t salvage it 😭) I can’t believe Ive known your channel for 10 years now. I remember seeing this video too. Thank you for making such high quality content on orchids. You’re like the encyclopedia of orchids on RUclips
I've had my V. Luzonica sp. for many years, and it's bloomed once. In Feb 2021, it was in my greenhouse when we had Snowmaggedon with 3 days of single-digit temps and loss of all power. Many plants in my greenhouse froze including most of my orchid collection. This vanda froze at the bottom, but the top inch or so clung to life! After letting the bottom dry for several months, I severed the living part and about 2 inches of the dead "stem" from the rest of the dead plant. I potted this part. Over the last year, it's finally putting out healthy roots and growing leaves! After watching this video, I think I need to move it outdoors into the Texas heat and see if it will bloom. I'm so happy that you posted this vanda video - it's given me a new direction to head in with this vanda. I have one other that is very tiny - I may move it outside, too. Thanks! ❤
Hi Danni, I love my vandas! (I currently have 5) I’m in FL where summers are long, hot , and extremely humid so they do well outside and bloom often. I’m mostly an outside grower but your videos have helped me out a ton in regard to care as I still consider myself a beginner 😊 Thank you.
Yayy Perr. Sunset Bangkok are my favorite!! I grow them outside in a pergola in Miami, Florida. Most of my videos show all the vandas and how easily they grow here in the tropical climate. They do awesome!! Their scent is exceptional!!❤❤❤
Hi! I’m in Miami too! I have two Vandas which give me headaches. 😂 How do you water them outside? A bucket? A Hose? Do you have a lot of issues with pests? Or rotting from The torrential rains we get?
Hello, I own one of those and it is starting to have some purple round spots besides of a tinge of purple on leaves. Can you please tell me if that is normal? I know that some cattleyas get those type of sunspots but just want to make sure it is not any type of fungus/ bacteria. Thank you!
@@MissOrchidGirl hi Dani!! This weather just like any has good and bad! It’s perfect for growing, but also for fungus and thrips! So happy you responded!! Thank you for all your videos!
Yay! A vanda video! They are my staple orchid next to my phals. I live in SE Florida so they are happy outside. I hang them from a branch and staggered from high to low. Bangkok Sunset hybrids and any that are fragrant and free blooming are my faves. Paksorn Fragrance that smells like jasmine, Memoria Holland Tan that smells like bubblegum/cotton candy and Sorara Heartbreaker that smells like fruit loops are my faves next to the Bangkok sunset hybrids
Your videos are the reason I bought 5 vandas! I potted them up and hoping to grow them inside. I am in Colorado so it is dry and hot during summer here and super cold in winter! So I can only grow inside! Please keep posting vanda videos! 🥰
It was your vanda videos a few years ago that got me interested in them. I found them at a local orchid nursery and quickly fell in love with their gorgeous blooms. I have three. One is big, potted in basket and hanging, a smaller one in a basket, and one more from a keiki that's still potted. All are doing well, but they do take more maintenance and frequent watering as I live in a dry climate.
Danny: There are a few possibilities why the vanda videos aren't as popular. 1) When I was a newer orchidist, I tried potting them using your videos, thinking Texas heat would be similar to Cyprus heat. It destroyed most of them after a year. So it is true that the culture you have to provide your vandas doesn't work for most others. 2) A major reason people love vandas is the roots...potting them hides one of their gorgeous features. Having said both, I love your vids on vandas now that I have more experience. Maybe labeling the "for advanced growers" would help? I'm not sure. But the blooms! And I still learn a LOT. For example, I had no idea why my Palmer hybrid wasn't blooming. She is more than mature! But light...I'm still growing her indoors. So I will try moving her out with the others! 💜 Please keep playing with them!
I grow my vandas outside in a net shaded garden. they are growing in plastic basket hanger they come with when I purchase them I only add a bit of coco cubes/ chips to retain a little bit of water because they are big and thirsty orchids !😂 my mother mount them on trees specially the velthuis and mokara type vandas they love mounted and watered 3 times a day. I live in a tropical country. A fan from the Philippines !!!♥
I love Vandas, but I completely understand your motives! The other day I finally gave up one one that has been struggling. It never accepted media for me, and I simply couldn’t have it bare rooted. I tried everything to reroot her, even an ICU set up (as per your older videos) she just never moved forward 😢. Currently I have two more. IOne of them suspiciously a lot like the pink Vanda in this video, but her name is Wuttiphanara Manoonya. She’s in a pot under barrinas trying to adapt to media. She has healthy roots and yet still dehydrated. I might have to introduce a little bit more sphagnum into the pot (with a bamboo skewer 😂). The second Vanda is also having its issues. She lost all her roots, currently growing new roots, but I keep her in a small empty pot so that her roots will ball up in a hopefully more manageable size for now. I soak her every day. But don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep it up. This one is called Rhynchodenia Magic Wand. She gives lovely little violet flowers. If I knew I could avoid them getting pests, I’d hang them outside. But also, I never go outside so when/ if they flower, I’d never enjoy the flowers as much! Anyway, keep up the videos and yes I do enjoy Vanda content a lot because it gives me ideas about how to approach my own Vanda issues. Although, mind you, I have oncidium issues ( no flowers even after 3 yrs) and cattleyas issues, also no flowers… and couple self destructive cattleyas. Oh the #OrchidLife
I adore vandas! The blooms are stunning and they can be prolific, but they are trickier to grow, especially in the northern part of the US, where I am. I've been grateful for your vanda videos, since there really isn't a lot of great discussion about them. Love the orchid mantis, too...my favorite insect on my favorite flowering plant. 😍
I just got a new Vanda today.🎉 I was searching for a Vanda Orchid Video from MOG(A recently posted one).So surprised with the coincidence 😂. Thanks Dani. Keep posting 😊
A friend of mine in high school got me into orchids because she was obsessed with growing/caring for them. She said she had wanted to get a vanda (specifically the Kanchana Magic Blue variety) for her birthday. I did some research on vandas and fell in love with them for their amazing blue-purple colors and super cool petal vein patterns. It’s a shame they’re so difficult to grow but I suppose that also makes them even more unique. I had gotten a large tattoo of the magic blue as my first tattoo ever in college and I remember the artist asking me “Are you sure you want to do this for your first tattoo?” and I was very determined. So it’s a shame to hear more people aren’t interested in vandas, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart (and on my chest/shoulder area haha).
Thank you for sharing .. hello from Alaska ! I have 3 Phals that do well indoor in spag moss and 2 of the phals are reproducing stems & keikes on the spikes. I might give vanda’ s a try next spring/ summer when we get 18-22 hours of sunlight.
Mum has a lot of Vanda Robert’s Delight and they’re all just hung on a tree with their roots growing long to the ground lol they’re constantly blooming and it looks really good.
I love vandals and your vanda videos are my favorites! I would love a video on what vandas you still have. Mine go outside in partial shade during the spring and fall, but we have really hot temperatures in summer and it can be a bit chilly in winter so they come inside for me during those months. I have always used the microfiber towel strips that you used many years ago and it works well for me
Hi Dani! Thank you so so much for doing a Vanda video. I love vandas so I REALLY appreciate the time you took to make this video despite the videos not performing as well. You are such a kind and generous person sharing your vast knowledge on orchids. I will say I keep my vandas in a southern facing window during the winter then put them outside as soon as I can in spring and they do bloom ok for me. But I’m thinking of keeping them in the greenhouse this winter to see if they bloom better. I also lost a number of vandas this year due to life slamming me like a semi truck 😢. So maybe when things calm down I will replace some. I keep mine bare rooted but am thinking of potting. Awwww! Baby praying mantis!! I love them too! One time I must have had an egg pod on a plant I brought in for the winter and one day had HUNDREDS of baby preying mantises all over my living room!!😂😂. Yes, I did try to rescue every one of them and put them outside.
For the nurseries here in Florida, vandas are king. So I do have one. But I live in a subtropical area that gets too cold for them in winter. So it is my most fussy plant. I’m interested in growing them potted but nearly all of the vandas here are grown bare-rooted. As you know, transitioning them into pots is difficult so the one vanda I have is enough for me.
I also have limited space and primarily use grow lights for my plant collection. My vandas took up more time and space than the other orchids and plants, so I rehoused them and they all bloom within three months. I was delighted and heartbroken at the same time. They are growing and are well cared for, so it all worked out for the best.
Wow, she is beautiful! Yes, to more vanda videos too as I want to learn more. I'm trying to work up the courage to buy a vanda, pot it, and try growing it in my garden next to my monster sized cattleya (lost the tag ages ago and don't remember its name lol). It's too windy at my location to try growing it bare rooted and I don't want to spend my days outdoors spraying her down multiple times. I had a few when I lived in South Florida and had some success but when I moved to another place, it was too breezy on the patio and I wasn't able to keep up with watering.....Now I live in Central Florida and have to bring my outdoor orchids into the garage during winter cold spells so what's one more orchid to move indoors!?! Perhaps a trip to the local garden center is in order so I can try again without breaking the bank on an orchid.
I do not own vanda orchids and that is why I do not watch vanda videos. I have the greatest success with phals. I have tried a couple of cattleya orchids but in my environment, they take extra care and I have lost them all. Thank you for your content. I have only been a subscriber since COVID...this is my COVID hobby
Hi Dani, like yourself I struggle with Vandas - but you have beautiful flowers! I try to keep mine in wooden baskets with only a small amount large bark under a west facing awning (in Sydney Australia). I mist the roots daily and give them a soak (when I remember to) in diluted fertiliser. Winter is still too cool for them here, apart from the v. Coeruleas which like cooler nights, so I bring mine inside for the Winter.
I didn't know I could put a Vanda on bark and moss! I thought they had to be bare rooted on the air. Maybe I'll give one another go!😊Thank you for the great video!
I live in Jamaica and most people who maintain orchid paths have lots of vandas. They have them in the ground, in pots and on trees. They fertilize them occasionally and water them weekly. Some people actually hardly water them but just leave them for the rain to water them. They're like low-maintenance that way. I've tried raising them on my patios in pots but they don't do well. I've lost too many from my patio. I no longer live on an estate and had downsized to apartment in retirement, so I'm struggling even more with getting my vandas to survive. I'm down to 4 now with 2 struggling and they've stopped blooming on my south facing balcony patios. Still trying with them. Although not blooming, the vanda that looks the healthiest is just handing by wires from a trellis on the patio. The roots and numerous and thick and the plant had even given me a keke already. I'm now trying to improve the root system for the other 3 vandas that I transferred to clay orchid pots. Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll survive and even bloom by next year. Love your vlogs. They've helped me a lot with my orchids.
There's a flower seller here in Penang, Malaysia, with lots of Vanda variety. Beautiful blooms. But they are huge and due to our tropical weather we can hang it bare rooted. The only reason I don't it is my collection is the sheer size and space needed. In our tropical weather, we hang it and let the root grow in the air. The root can be very long and that need space.
Vandas are in my top 2 fave orchids, I really wish you would make more videos on them ❤ My only issue is that the do best bare rooted and I have to spray them on the daily, also they are so expensive and often come with fusarium, especially if you buy from SG.
I always watch the Vanda videos because I was trying to get them to adapt to my climate and grow room. Out of 4, I have 2 left, after 3 years. So personal, I miss the Vanda content. ❤
Hi! It is my first time comment in your videos. I live in Canada and I grow vandas indoors using Barrina lights. They have bloomed for me reliably through the years (even those with big blooms like the Pachara Delight).
When it comes to orchids.. Danni is my online mentor.. I am a newbie to orchids. Inspired by her I have got 3-4 vandas and rhyncostylis. I am from Bangalore, India where we have moderate to warm climate with summer temps soaring to 38c and a warm winter ( I think lowest is 15c approx which is not cold at all I think). My solution to vandas .. hang them outside.. they can take direct sun. And I soak them every weekend for 2-3 hrs. And I find I don’t have to water them on weekdays cuz we have plenty of humidity here. Vanda is not at all suitable for uk like weather like I wouldn’t get a cool growing orchid here. I have to invent a fridge with grow lights to maintain them😂. And orchids are so costly… except dendrobium in my part of the world.
I think Vandas are one of the best. Easy to keep. Mine are bear rooted and they get a daily dunk into a big bucket of very weak fertilized rain water. They grow well and flower multiple times a year. Stem rot is just not possible as it does not get wet. Kept indoors in the UK
@@leahnichol6665 I'm in south Bucks. I have three Vandas the oldest I've had for about 15 years. Its species is unknown but has a large blue/purple flower. It has just finished flowering with two separate spikes. It will flower again before the end of the year. My next oldest is a Rhynchorides Bangkok Sunset x Renanthera storiei and that has a new spike. This one does show signs of reddening which apparently is too much light but it does not affect this plant. The smallest is a Vanda denisoniana which was pot grown for the past two years but earlier this year I've transferred to a basket. I've maintained a ball of sphagnum moss around the base to reduce the shock allowing all roots that were out of the pot to remain airborne. Its doing very well indeed - one full leaf in a few months. All are hung from a curtain rail in my lounge which is east facing. Full sun till mid day. I just dunk them in a bucket of fertilized rain water daily.
@@paulbaker2098 Thank you. You have given me enough information to consider getting a vanda. I have an east facing window. I need to do further research. 🤗
I’ve found vandas hate being potted and need lots of aeration to the roots. They really need to be bare root and watered every day as the purist would say… The problem with that for some of that is if you’re in a dry climate lacking humidity, they hate that. I’ve discovered putting them in a clay pot with holes and no medium, or mixing in chunks of hickory typical used for wood stoves is the best of both worlds. Vandas and medium really don’t mix. My three cents. =)
The praying mantis is super cool!! I have a baby vanda oranooch song jed for almost a year now, and so far so good :) The biggest issue is her sensitivity to light, she must still be very young. I keep her in a basket bare rooted and water 2x a day. Her light needs seem to be very similar to my phals. She was a "baggy baby" from better-gro in the u.s. and so a bit of dehydration is the worst she's ever been thru. Thank-you so much for your work :) p.s. Grow lights are sufficient for my vanda being that she is still super immature. I do anticipate moving her outside once she matures. Growth is pretty slow, she has put on one new leaf with another close behind in the entire almost year i've had her.
I think You are right Dany, home growers generally struggle to find success with Vandas unless they have an open garden for vanda. I gifted a vanda to my brother.( We live in tropical region). He then hung the vanda bare rooted in the green house on his terrace top, plenty of light, heat and wind. Believe me in the last eight months or so, this vanda bloomed twice.
I live in central Florida. I have oodles of outside space to grow anything, but choose to grow all my orchids inside on my screened porch. I was given a baby pachara delight about 6 years ago. It bloomed after 5 Years. It is bare rooted. It grows way too slow for me as I give every orchid flower away all year. I don't like to put any of my orchids outside as I don't want any bugs or insects! Thanks for this video as I was just thinking about putting my one vanda in a pot. 🤔. I won't buy anymore.
Bought my first Vanda last week and arrives today, a Tango Fire. I've just been more focus with phalaenopsis and dendrobium so the focus was in that direction with regards to videos. But now I'm starting towards the Vandas and have watched 2 of your Vanda videos.
Wow, so beautiful! 😍 The video you made potting your vandas sometime ago was what made me see the possibility of growing them. I was really not up for growing bare root orchids. Now I have 3 of them, one being the Bangkok sunset (again inspired by you) and I am very happy about them! Even though they didn't reach flower size yet 😅 Thanks for the vanda videos. This one reminded me that i need to give them more fertilizer 😊
Vandas have some of the most beautiful flowers, and I love how they look, but I've never tried growing them, I live in a very dry desert, so outdoor growing is out of the question for me, some cacti struggle here. I really don't know if my growlights are bright enough, I have some awesome ones that work great for other tropical plants, they seem very bright but, I don't want to spend so many resources to buy it, find space for it, and find out my conditions are just not adequate. I am still pretty new to the hobby (maybe 3 or 4 years) and I just stopped rotting phalaenopsis roots, kind of embarrassing it took so long to learn how to grow the "easy" orchids. I love how forgiving the oncidiums are for me though, and dendrobium phalanopsis types love lava rock. If I ever have a more humid, or less hot, outdoor environment, I would certainly give Vandas a try!
I love Vanda orchids! You posted this just in time! I have several Vandas that are currently hanging but I want them in pots. They are outside year round here in south Florida. They bloom for me very well but I have two that are not happy so I am planting them in pots. My question is, they have really long roots and I know I should not cut them. How can I get them into the pots? Should I wrap them in a circle and gently stuff in a large pot? I have 46 orchids and I have learned so much from your channel Danni. Thank you!
I’m a subscriber and interested in getting a vanda, except they are not available in my area, which is probably why I don’t watch the videos. Hope you still feature them every now and again. I hope to one day.
I love vandas also but don’t have the light or space for one. My largest vanda cross is the Ascofinetia Cherry Blossom. She is doing well under a ring grow light. I also have Neofinetia Falcata under grow lights and doing well. Keep vanda videos coming as some of your tips work for Neos also.
My bf bought for me a big flower vanda as they are pretty! Well, I think why people don't really watch Vanda video because: 1. Vanda isn't really accessible unless you found specific orchid nursery (talking about France here) 2. I joined an orchid FB group in France and I can see many people who have vanda is actually older generation, whom probably dont watch youtube as much as we do 😂 - and they usually ask advise for vanda care there 3. Light requirements do a challenge in 4 climate country... If I still live in Singapore or other southeast asia countries, i would not have such problem 🙃 Nevertheless, thanks to your experience and videos. I definitely will also opt for smaller vanda like bangkok sunset type. Kinda thinking of neofinitia too (but they can be quite expensive...)
hi Danny, honestly I love video on vandas. I think the reason for lower views is that vandas are harder to grow inside than other orchids, and cant have too many due to space and few places where they can fit with the right conditions. After much struggle years back, I managed to grow some vandas potted in large containers with thick bark and they bloomed regularly for me in North Europe. So, it is possible to grow them if you have air flow in the roots... light was less of a problem for me but I was growing mostly hybrids (eg from Ansu). Hope this helps
The only Vanda I have is Vanda Philippineses. I recently purchased it and I potted it. I travel a lot and worried about watering it so I put it in a terracotta pot with moss and bark. I’m keeping it in my house under barrinas. We’ll see how it does.
I've never heard of this type of orchid & never really would have thought to order one online either. Do you have a place you recommend?? I only have 6 orchids though, as we don't have much available locally, Phaleonopsis Orchids mostly, lol! I'm 66, vision issues & learning electronics & obviously Orchids, lol. I live in Canadas only Desert. I appreciate your videos & knowledge very much, as I can listen to them. Thank you!! Knowing some orchids can be stubborn bloomers helps me to not toss this annoying Oncideum I came here to find help with. We have praying Mantis here too. I do get a huge kick finding them. How sweet to see your Baby Praying Mantis! Yay for you!! Thank you for showing him to us. I'll have to come back with my Grand-D to show her as she is loving growing plants & discovering Mantises as well, but for now, she is mostly more impressed with Rollypolly bugs & worms in the garden!! Again , TThank you for your videos and easy to l8sten to voice!
Hi Danny, I would LOVE to chat about vandas. I have watched your vanda videos, although I know they are of limited value for getting vandas through a New York winter. But no one really offers vanda material that's helpful to me -- not even the American Orchid Society. I successfully rebloomed my lamellata a few times, keeping it suspended above a big glass jar and soaking it every couple of days. The perreiraara and rhyncostylis I added to my little collection did not like that setup. So, I tried to move everything to pots with bark, stone, and perlite, but they didn't like that either, and the lamellata did not rebloom. I've since moved them to hanging clay "thimbles," long pots with holes for extra aeration, supplemented with a little sphagnum moss to retain extra humidity. They're okay, but not thriving. I hope to put the thimbles into big glass jars in the winter, probably with a little extra very loose moss, to maintain humidity, and intend to put these setups under lights indoors. I doubt they will bloom this way, but hope they will at least grow! Anyway, if I stopped going back to your vanda videos, it's because I sensed that you were struggling with environment too! If my summer/winter setups work, I'll let you know. 😉 And I think you're right that vandas are less popular partly because they are so massive; the other part is that vanda growers in the right environments find them very easy, no need to tutorials, while those of us who need extra help can't find the perfect solution other than by solitary struggle! 😫
I've never bought a vanda unless you count neofinetia. I think most vandas wouldn't work well in my cloudy country and I grow my orchids indoors. But i liked this video! Those flowers are beautiful.
Danni, my impression is that vandas are difficult to grow here on the wet coast, where we don’t tan, we rust. I know we have freezing temperatures occasionally in the winter, which they would not like, and the amount of time the weather is warm enough for them may not be adequate. I am not in touch with other orchid growers at present, so I cannot confirm. I am growing phalaenopsis at the moment. If I were to branch out, I suspect it would be to cymbidiums. I have heard of people growing them outside, but perhaps inside during winter. I have to do research first.
hi Danny ive got two, the one is small the other is medium sized at the mo.. ive never seen flowers.. I soak them every day for half an hr , in summer they are outside but winter its really cold at night with 1-3 degrees so I bring them in.. we wait for flowers.. I live in Johannesburg ..
So did i! I have been scouring the internet for the best way to care for vandas and i haven’t found anything quite good enough yet . Idk what to do but just give it the best care i know how to so far. I’ve been watering it (spraying) every other day and soaking it once a week with fertilizer. It’s still in that little box which i don’t like and has the wires holding it up which i don’t like either. I feel like it’s going to prohibit it from growing the best it can and i want to try using only one wire attached to the base and keeping it where it’s at currently on my porch east facing. If you have any tips for me i would GREATLY appreciate them!
Wow...your pots looking very attractive...I recently bought my vandas ...already fall in love with every single story of vanda❤...btw where do we get those special pots?
I am still new in growing orchids in my home. I have purchased several types of orchids to try and see what does well here and which do not. I have not yet gotten a vanda orchid. They look beautiful, but based on your information that they are a bit more difficult to maintain and need so much light (which I'm not sure I can offer here), I am waiting to get one until I have more experience. Also, they are usually more expensive at the nurseries, and I do not want to spend so much money on an orchid if I'm not sure yet how to keep it alive 😅
My main problem with vandas is I never have enough light to keep their metabolism going and then the roots always seem to just deteriorate idk maybe it’s my hard water but even with distilled water it never works I have one as an experiment to see if it’ll work so far so good it’s an ascoscenda mikasa white in a clear orchid pot with many holes and chunky bark it seems to keep it hydrated that way it even kept the blooms for 3 months without dehydration now it only needs to get itself together and grow roots which it hasn’t for 7 months already so fingers crossed 😊
I watch the not-Vanda videos because, much as I love Vandas, I know they won't survive in my arid climate which is rapidly heating up. I got Phals and cymbidiums, which are doing fine indoors/outdoors. I really want a vanda, tho. When I'm more experienced.
I only have the sunset Bangkok. I love vandas but they just grow way too big for my space! If I had a bigger space I would definitely get a couple more.
also one morre thing ive seen people uing tea for orchids ive done the research and apperently tanic acid in the tea can help but idk, what do you think?
I have been growing orchids off and on for 25 years. I have never had any pests but nowwww I have little tiny black bugs. What are they and how do I treat ? I noticed them while watering. My decoration pot is white so easy to spot. Not many 2 or 3 in the bottom.
I purchased this vanda and arrived as a huge plant with two flower spikes. I tried to repotted to clay pot, but its roots are so rich, cannot separate from the little basket…I would prefer a young plant.
I like vanda, I’m actually having a vanda frnzy at the moment the problem is they are hard to find in my local garden shops. online vandas for sale are either seedlings or too big to be posted :(
I love the indigo colour of those big Vandas, but I simply don't find them enjoyable to grow. Like the big Cattleyas (which I love growing), they take up a lot of space, but unlike Cattleyas, issues such as Fusarium are very difficult to address because of the monopodial grow habit. Watering them is also awkward because of the long, stiff roots.
I live in Germany and all the vandas in Shops are without any medea. Plus in a livingroom there are so Hard to mentain. I love them for the eye but not for my home.🙈♥️
I find Vandas so beautiful but I cannot justify the space requirements as I am renting and already have a big collection for my available time. I do enjoy seeing Vandas in online content however. Edit: I have a Renanthera monachica x Holcoglossum and that's the closest I will come to vandas.
I'm sorry your Vanda videos don't do well! I actually most love videos about orchids I can't grow- giant Vandas, terrestrial orchids, Catasetum-types, etc. Since I can't grow them, I want to experience them vicariously, and see all the unusual and beautiful forms orchids come in! But I guess if most of your viewers are looking for tutorials for home-growing in pot-culture, and not showcases of a huge variety of orchids, then it makes more sense to focus on the popular beginner orchids ;-; Some of my favourite orchid videos are the ones where I go, "Oh my goodness that thing is gigantic, I would never want that, it's the size of a child!" And then I watch hours worth of videos about them!
I also struggle with vandas and even phals because of the size. A miniature I've been obsessed with lately is Neolauchea pulchella because it does well at 50-60% humidity and has a fun growth structure.
I bought my first vanda after I saw your video..i love big flower..but i never have any luck of it reblooming..instead it suffers crown rot..i put it outside, with the plastic basket it came from..my vanda have 4 keikis now.. I don't know what's wrong with it..
I am already a crazy person trying to grow cattleyas with the little light i can muster. I would love to have one or two vandas but that is just not feasible for me.
Hello!!! It has been a difficult year for me, so I think I missed nearly all the videos you published in the last 10-12 months... Yeah, Vandas are not as interesting for me for the reasons you mentioned: firstly and most importantly, they are very expensive!! Secondly, they take too much space for home growers, in temperate climates there's not enough light for them in winter and (if you don't have a garden with trees) in summer they burn under direct sunlight. In conclusion, they're too high maintenance and too picky for me 😅
I live in Singapore - tropical climate, but I live in an apartment, and I find it hard to find space sufficient light for my vandas. Even on the balcony I think it doesn’t receive enough sunlight. And the roots rot. :( help?
I…just don’t care for the flowers on most vandals. (Thanks autocorrect.). That plus a large, awkward plant and difficulty wintering them inside…. I have a neostylus of some sort and a tiny, struggling seedling that came in an assortment. I’d like to keep the neostylus alive - it seems to be doing ok so far - but the seedling…eh.
I just bought my first Ascocentrum - (miniatum)! I keep Vanda Falcata types already, but I have been weary of the usual vandas as I live in a cooler climate (UK), growing under Lights. I have heard that Ascocentrum stays small and could do okay in my climate on a mount- so I am giving it a go! Hopefully it's not too torturous to the lovely victim plant and it does okay! I love the smaller flowered vandas, such a pitty I just have the wrong environment for one!
I live in the tropics and have all my orchids in the garden and they're doing very well but vandas hate me, they start dying as soon as they come home :(
You talked a lot about your environment in this video. Can you give some details like winter and summer temperatures, etc so I can compare with my local conditions. Your videos have really helped this beginner. So many videos leave out ey steps and information. Thank you.
I don't think you have anything to do with why people are not watching your Vanda videos. I think it is because not many people have Vandas. They are not as popular as Phals or Cattleyas. I do not have the space for a Vanda. I was thinking of getting a smaller one but I cannot find one that I can make the space for.
I have the Perreiraara Bangkok Sunset and she not doing to well. It's been about a year in my care and only 1 leaf thus far. I will switch her to better light as she's under the barrinas now. I do love vanadas and want them in my collection.
I just don't have the space for them. They take up too much real-estate and with a 500sq ft studio and only one 4 shelved lighted cabinet I just don't have to space to even try a Vanda
And I am very envious of your outdoor orchid space (in a good way) 🤭🧡🧡🧡
@@ninin9515 yes I believe getting that wine colored ting on the leaves is normal. Most of mine have and they are good. I bought them that way. 👍🏻
@dianaspring9127 Oooo! I will have to try those varieties at some point. Thank you!!
Trying the vanda for the first time. They are beautiful. Thanks for the video.
This made me laugh out loud!😅
Thank you for sharing .. hello from Alaska ! I have 3 Phals that do well indoor in spag moss and 2 of the phals are reproducing stems & keikes on the spikes. I might give vanda’ s a try next spring/ summer when we get 18-22 hours of sunlight.
I love vandas. You should start buying them again and do more videos.
Vandas are in my top 2 fave orchids, I really wish you would make more videos on them ❤
My only issue is that the do best bare rooted and I have to spray them on the daily, also they are so expensive and often come with fusarium, especially if you buy from SG.
Do you pot them? Dreaming of trying a vanda in Pennsylvania where we have winter.
Seriously? What light source do you have? Are you in the south?
Love the pots your using
Yes! Wish I could find them here!
Thank-you so much for your work :)
p.s.
Grow lights are sufficient for my vanda being that she is still super immature. I do anticipate moving her outside once she matures. Growth is pretty slow, she has put on one new leaf with another close behind in the entire almost year i've had her.
Since I subscribed earlier this year, I watch all your videos. Always can learn something new.
I am only trying my first Vanda because you have a video. Please keep making content for less common species.
Love this! I grow my vandas in pots as well since I’m zone 6 US and my Bangkok Sunset is in spike also!
Bought my first Vanda last week and arrives today, a Tango Fire. I've just been more focus with phalaenopsis and dendrobium so the focus was in that direction with regards to videos.
But now I'm starting towards the Vandas and have watched 2 of your Vanda videos.
I saw my first P. Mantis by seeing its shadow first as it was moving on my walkway. It blended in with colours I had not seen on one before. ❤🎉 Enjoy.
I love vandas!!!! Still looking for the perfect set up in hot Florida outside but bugs are crazy!!!!
Wow, so beautiful! 😍
The video you made potting your vandas sometime ago was what made me see the possibility of growing them. I was really not up for growing bare root orchids. Now I have 3 of them, one being the Bangkok sunset (again inspired by you) and I am very happy about them! Even though they didn't reach flower size yet 😅
Thanks for the vanda videos.
Thank you!
I happily pot my vandas here in zone 6 Ohio USA too! Sometimes you just Have to, for your climate and time restrictions!❤
FINALLY, i have been waiting for this video for so long 😭😭😭
I’m a subscriber and interested in getting a vanda, except they are not available in my area, which is probably why I don’t watch the videos. Hope you still feature them every now and again. I hope to one day.
I bought the pachara bluebecause of one of your videos years ago!
Well, I think why people don't really watch Vanda video because:
1. Vanda isn't really accessible unless you found specific orchid nursery (talking about France here)
2. I joined an orchid FB group in France and I can see many people who have vanda is actually older generation, whom probably dont watch youtube as much as we do 😂 - and they usually ask advise for vanda care there
3. Light requirements do a challenge in 4 climate country... If I still live in Singapore or other southeast asia countries, i would not have such problem 🙃
Nevertheless, thanks to your experience and videos.
You may get a V. lamellata species, small and compact. V. nana is small and cute. V. coerulecense, V. testacea, V. mariae. 🙂
Hi..I just got my first vanda..so here to learn..❤❤❤
I meant if ANYONE has any tips I will appreciate anything i can get . Thanks 🙏
Love Vandas!
I have been growing orchids off and on for 25 years. I have never had any pests but nowwww I have little tiny black bugs. What are they and how do I treat ? I noticed them while watering. My decoration pot is white so easy to spot. Not many 2 or 3 in the bottom.
do you have any vanda garayi?
Where can I get those pots?
I purchased this vanda and arrived as a huge plant with two flower spikes. I tried to repotted to clay pot, but its roots are so rich, cannot separate from the little basket…I would prefer a young plant.
I like vanda, I’m actually having a vanda frnzy at the moment the problem is they are hard to find in my local garden shops. online vandas for sale are either seedlings or too big to be posted :(
Vandas have everything to do with climate. It's an uphill battle otherwise. I live in south Florida and I couldn't kill one if I tried.
I'm sorry your Vanda videos don't do well! I actually most love videos about orchids I can't grow- giant Vandas, terrestrial orchids, Catasetum-types, etc. Since I can't grow them, I want to experience them vicariously, and see all the unusual and beautiful forms orchids come in! But I guess if most of your viewers are looking for tutorials for home-growing in pot-culture, and not showcases of a huge variety of orchids, then it makes more sense to focus on the popular beginner orchids ;-;
Some of my favourite orchid videos are the ones where I go, "Oh my goodness that thing is gigantic, I would never want that, it's the size of a child!" And then I watch hours worth of videos about them!
I also struggle with vandas and even phals because of the size. A miniature I've been obsessed with lately is Neolauchea pulchella because it does well at 50-60% humidity and has a fun growth structure.
I love phals for the size is smaller than Vanda. I understand Vanda needed more space.
They aren't sold a lot in my area outside of fresh imports at orchid shows.
I don't have the light for vandas and prefer phalanopsis
In conclusion, they're too high maintenance and too picky for me 😅
Perreiraara Rapeepath 'Pink' (Perr. Bangkok Sunset × Van. Pine Rivers)очень похоже что это тот же сорт что и у вас на видео))
I live in Singapore - tropical climate, but I live in an apartment, and I find it hard to find space sufficient light for my vandas. Even on the balcony I think it doesn’t receive enough sunlight. And the roots rot. :( help?
Is your vanda in a potted medium? Vandas like sunlight but indirect bright light should be enough too.
Thank you.
no one likes vandas? i think they are cool and you can get 1 in blue!
I don't think you have anything to do with why people are not watching your Vanda videos. I think it is because not many people have Vandas. They are not as popular as Phals or Cattleyas. I do not have the space for a Vanda. I was thinking of getting a smaller one but I cannot find one that I can make the space for.
Yes I know that’s what I was saying 😊 was asking what is it about Vandas that makes them less appealing than other orchids 🤔
I have the Perreiraara Bangkok Sunset and she not doing to well. It's been about a year in my care and only 1 leaf thus far. I will switch her to better light as she's under the barrinas now. I do love vanadas and want them in my collection.
May I make a request to all commentators, please?
Please always let us know where you live, otherwise we cannot understand your experiences properly!🙁
I just don't have the space for them. They take up too much real-estate and with a 500sq ft studio and only one 4 shelved lighted cabinet I just don't have to space to even try a Vanda
Pleased to see content for keeping vandas in pots. So much content one comes across is very anti pot for them, which is not practical for many.
Oh you got the orchid named after Singapore's 7th President: Dr Tony Tan
Vandacious!
HI
I dont have any vandas so I typically dont watch the videos about them
