Worse Than We Thought... This '70 Chevelle is ROTTEN!

  • Day 2 on our new "dream car" 1970 Chevelle. I knew this car was a little rough around the edges but after I started scratching the surface..... wow it's bad. The list of parts we're going to need for this car is as long as my arm.
    This should be a fun project but it's going to take a pile of man hours.

    Have your engine guys build a mild 454 for you. It's pretty easy to make 450-500 HP with a very mild built 454. You can make more power and torque than the 350 that's in the Nova and still be a daily driver type of car. Paint it Massey-Fergusson Red like the '67 Roadster and add the black stripes. The '70 Chevelle's are my favorite muscle cars as well. I've own two '70 Chevelle's over the years.

    You are a brave soul to bring this back from the dead. The sheer volume of work on a project like this says a lot. You have a correct mindset on the worst of a "project". If one thinks about a person's time spent working on a basket case it pencils out. Time used at home is as valuable you make it. The time spent at home is worth the same, whether you are working on a car or mowing the lawn. In the end when finished it will be worth quite a bit. My 72 Cutlass is the same platform as a Chevelle and is like driving a couch for comfort.

    The Monte Carlo shared a lot of parts with the Chevelle so keep your eye out for any of them being parted out in your area. You also have extra Camaro parts for trading stock! Personally I’m not a fan of hot rod satin black because it’s on everything and Chevy had some beautiful colors for the 70 model year.

    The rear bumper, as well as the grille, are 1 year only. I, personally, would not change it to 71/72. It's a hallmark. Although it's not an SS, the round gauges, like in the same era Monte Carlo, are equally desirable. IMHO

      @geraldscott4302 2 дня назад +3

      Since both the rear bumper and grille are destroyed, I don't see what difference it makes as far as what you replace them with. Make it look the way you want it to. Those are bolt on parts, and the next owner can change them if they want. A cowl hood is definitely a necessity on any Chevelle, Camaro, or Nova, unless you are going with some type of custom hood scoop/air cleaner.

    Certain years of certain cars are worth rebuilding in almost any condition, Chevelles, Chargers, etc and this one doesn't even seem that bad. Its not going to be numbers matching so might as well go for the big block manual with a 12 bolt posi. A 396 would go so well with this thing.

    There is a Chevelle running around where I live thats silver grey with black stripes. Sharp looking car it was built as a factory racer special ordered by the dealership with a 427/four speed. Absolutely nasty. Just a word of caution. I owned a Pontiac of the same year and what appears to be the same suspension and managed to snap the upper link on the rear suspension. You would not go wrong having a new one made up. Better safe than sorry.

    The 1966 Impala came out with a Gold color on it. My younger cousin bought a Impala off an elderly women. It was stock never been wrecked or repainted clean clean until my younger cousin got a hold of it.
    He put chrome wheels and small tire's.
    He tried to make a low rider out of it. It did look pretty nice for a quick minute.
    He should have just left it alone, being a young teenager he wreck it totly destroyed the 1966 Impala.
    The 327 / 283 was still good in it don't know what ever happen to it. Wrecking yard might have ended up with it. It was a Stock Gold color that look pretty nice it had a light metallic in the paint.

    I am so jealous of you Dan!! You have my dream car!! Paint it metallic gold with black stripes. I like the wheels you have, they’re close to the factory mags that came with them. A 71-72 back bumper! Dress it like an SS, emblems on the black grill! 350 4bbl, headers and transmission with the shift kit! Love to hear that 2nd gear bark!! You lucky dog!! I painted a late 80's Suburban for a guy that wanted to revamp it little, he mainly use it to put his boat to the lake and said his wife wouldn't ride in it because it was raggedy. It turned out really nice new trim all the bells and whistles to make it look nice. I rear Differential looks like a 10.5 it may be a Buick, Pontiac or Olds. frame you have.

    Wow, that is getting expensive fast. You have a lot of options. You can sell the original panels to someone good at fixing them, you won’t get much for them but they are money and will have no problems fitting like you will run into for sure fitting all those re-pop parts. I usually like to keep the original panels and use re-pop metal to patch with. Those panels have value. The great thing by doing what you are doing or talking about doing is all new steel, that is cool, not going to rot out in your life time if you garage keep it and you keep it as a personal car.
