It wasn’t that impactful when it released. As quoted by IHE “it’s like hordmode but a bit shit”. It was just 3 rounds of each enemy then a boss, nothing that special. The TTK April update did help give it some better relevancy and new loot but it’s nothing compared to a raid

16:00 and THATS why I loved harbinger so much when I soloed it. Wire rifles are just enough to break your shields, so you still have time to get to cover before you’re just dead. Nothing truly one shot, but nothing was weak. Champions were well placed as well. Only thing I wasn’t a fan of was match game, it severely limited my load out options
Skolas was such a tough encounter that many gamers did it ONCE, and said "never again". That was certainly me! Glad I did it, but never tried it a second time
For now the dares of eternity fills this niche for me, but i think the best point made in this video was when you offhandedly mentioned 'remember when there was scaleable endgame content?'. I really miss when pretty much all endgame had a fun normal mode which wasnt too serious but still gave loot and a challenge mode for the people who WANTED a challenge
I was a bit late to D1 and the first time I played Prison of Elders I got Gjallarhorn, my friends went crazy and I didn’t realise the significance! Love this game
I miss being able to lob a solar grenade just before POE started so when the boss appeared in the cut scene there was a solar grenade burning there. It didn't do any damage but was still fun to do.
those shits were actually so hard, and there was so many varying challenges as well. I can recall so many that were a helluva grind, the worst was this cabal boss that had a shield and like 300 ads, and at the end we all so relieved we made it through.
The most difficult part about Skolas was the anxiety inducing mines sound that conveniently showed up when everyone in the party is about to die and surrounded by enemies with no hunter to go invis because the were probably using NightHawk and you're on the oposite side from the spawn. Oh and Arc-Burn if you didn't have a full team of high impact snipers hitting crits 100% of the time.
I was 14 when D1 came out. I played the campaign but then realised the endgame was in 3+ hour raids, and being a kid I couldn't commit to it. I put the game down and never returned. Watching this video, I am legitimately sad seeing what I missed out on, knowing that if I had stuck around I would have got to experience all of this.
Hey Evan, i love these videos you make. Just an idea, why not do one for each season? For parts of seasons you have already you can do a classic “refer to this video I did for more information”. You could do like a round up of what could be done that season, what bits of story we’ve done (missions and such), quests, exotics. You could do 1 a month or so and be done before the next year of Destiny. Year 1 - Destiny 2 Season 1 - Red War Season 2 - Curse of Osiris Season 3 - Warmind Year 2 - Foresaken Season 4 - Season of the Outlaw Season 5 - Season of the Forged Season 6 - Season of the Drifter Season 7 - Season of Opulence Year 3 - Shadowkeep Season 8 - Season of the Undying Season 9 - Season of the Dawn Season 10 - Season of the Worthy Season 11 - Season of Arrivals Year 4 - Beyond Light Season 12 - Season of the Hunt Season 13 - Season of the Chosen Season 14 - Season of #$@)&@) Season 15 - Season of $@$%#?! Year 5 - Witch Queen Year 6 - Lightfall
I'm not sure how well known it was at the time, but it was discovered that you could stunlock Skolas with high impact snipers (before Bungie removed elemental burns). Eventually, I got Efrideet's Spear to reroll into arc with surplus and field scout, and starting using the sniper rifle method as the ghostly servitors would frequently drop special ammo and so I had to wait on fewer timers to retry the encounter. You could still use a rocket launcher with this method as well, but there was less need to team wipe if someone misfired their Gjallarhorn. Also, it's worth mentioning that on the first week of the Challenge of the Elders had an extremely difficult room at lv34. I remember it because I completed it around 20 times trying to see if the Elder Cipher could drop past first completion. The third room was brutal. Arc burn hive, dismantle mines. I don't know who taught me how to easily do it, but at some point I learned that you can have someone crouch over the entrance gate enemies use, and they would never enter the room. So two people sat, and one just dismantled mines. I remember helping some exasperated souls out there finally complete it after hours of trying, and I'm glad that they were finally able to find victory :)
How is the scalable difficulty for PoE any different then the Legend, Master, GM difficulty we have now for Strikes, Nightmare Hunts, and Empire Hunts???
The amount of hours spent doing this activity. Never got bored, it was even a turning point to where I went out to LFG and find players to team up with to run harder difficulties. It was a wonderful time, I enjoyed power leveling only to then accompany others struggling through the rounds.
8th grade, May 2014. We were supposed to be reading on our chromebooks and i was just watching the house of wolves reveal stream. Stressful as hell but definitely was worth it. At the time my group became more of a hardcore group, any free time we had we used it doing raids, weekly heroics and nightfalls on all characters then grinding bounties or tiger strikes for pre dlc weapons and engrams. The Wolves Prowling event came out. Would grind the hell out of the load zone glitch at skywatch or we would start up vault of glass and just do a 6 man patrol on venus. We maxed all characters out with keys and filled our characters inventories, post masters, and our entire vaults up with engrams from the farm. Day one we got on and spent an hour just decrypting them all. It was my favorite era of destiny and it's sad it's gone a different direction. But huge nostalgia. Maybe some others can relate?
I still remember the first time clearing the prison. I was in a hotel in Portland playing with my wife and friend. Dropping down that hole already satisfied.... then staring at that chest. That was the day I got my first gjallarhorn. I went running into the streets.
I loved the Wolves' Leash, I remember my first attempt at PoE and it took us so long to finally kill Skolas. We had to fight him with a ghorn because nobody had one. After beating him once it was almost a breeze from then on and we would clear it out three times a week until TTK.
My theory was we are going to get a season where variks sends a fallen he trust to help retake his prison but sadly I think we are getting a EDZ and Moon/Vaulted Location themed season. And plus. We have already gotten a Reef Season.
It was a lot of fun honestly, I remember being pissed when my exotic I got from the chest was no land beyond (which was looked at as trash at the time) because I really wanted to get the universal remote (fun fact I started playing destiny in the 4th grade and im about to be a senior, fun times :) )
Playing the Prison Of Elders on a PS3 was next level hard. If you needed to use a heavy synth, you would try and find a place to hide, tell your fireteam that you were dropping a heavy, and then, 20 seconds later, your inventory screen would load so you could actually use a heavy synth. So frustrating. But it sure made beating Skolas satisfying! Good times man!
Watching all of your D1 history content really puts things into perspective and explains why so many people loved it. Ngl, I love how easy D2 is compared to D1 because it allows me to complete things on my spare time without falling behind. However, that lack of challenge makes things repetitive. I do like that D2 has difficulty modifiers on various activities now other than strikes or raids. But I’d like one for seasonal activities as well unless they’re public events. Even those have level requirements too though.
oh god the nostalgia. I remember grinding out the wolves chests and getting my Red Death for the first time. i always reset my hunter from level 1 to cheat the chest and get the free exotic. still never got gjallahorn
Having to level up weapons individually In D1 was horrible, people used to shard a lot of stuff because they didn't wanted to upgrade a gun to try it when it costed currency to use the perks in it
Only two subclasses each. No solar on titan. No arc on warlock and no void on hunter. Mix that in with no swords(not that any of us that played that first week of the prison wanted to get up close)and you were in for a hard fight. Also I think this was the first time I remember in destiny where you would take splash damage inside your Titan bubble. It was a tough time.
Ironic. Game that had bad reviews because of the quality of the story, developes to a game with a huge interesting diverse story including unsolved mysteries and legends.
There was no reset from the chest to get an exotic. The way it worked was, you were guaranteed an exotic on first completion with your character. So beat it your Titan, exotic drop. Beat it with hunter, exotic drop, Warlock etc. I was lucky enough to get the Ghally with my Warlock's first competition. The only other way to guarantee a exotic from the Prison was to delete your character and start from scratch.
As I’m almost done watching this it all touches my heart so much and brings back so many memories . All the grinding an me an my man grinding together for the best loot and did anyone else loot chests for hours hoping to get a new ship!! Also I was always a scout rifle player and I had the very first legendary explosive Impack called the threads apon stars!! It was god it was good it was before their was anything else!! I miss D1 so much and wish D2 was more like it esp for the packs D1 had. Ahhhh all the memories thank u for this!
Fun Story about PoE: I played PoE days before TTK came out and it was on my Titan specifically. I had just finished levelling her up + had hoped of getting Gjallarhorn as I had never had it on any of my other characters. Well, Two days before TTK's release, I do PoE and got Gjallarhorn fron the queen's chest as part of my first play of PoE. Two days later, Gjallarhorn would be redundant until Rise Of Iron. Rip
Prison of Elders + Challenge of Elders is my favorite activity in Destiny 1 and 2. I spent so much time in there grinding for weapons. I remember with Challenge of Elders my friends and I would try and get more points than each other each time and it was a blast and a half

Idk what to comment so I’ll edit this after I finish the vid, hiii everyone
Aight I’m back. I miss Poe.
Nice!
That’s cool!
Bro it's been hours pls come back
Finish the vid yet

It wasn’t that impactful when it released. As quoted by IHE “it’s like hordmode but a bit shit”. It was just 3 rounds of each enemy then a boss, nothing that special. The TTK April update did help give it some better relevancy and new loot but it’s nothing compared to a raid
To be fair, a raid is a 6 person thing whereas PoE is a 3 person event
IHE also just unconditionally hates on the destiny franchise. Watch his forsaken review, it’s kinda painful how awful it is
IHE?
@@toddriehle7675 IHE = "I Hate everything"
@@toddriehle7675 very true, it’s just bungie scraped a raid for this instead which IMO was a downgrade
Damn did not expect this video, what a throwback! Well played!
I remember my first time fighting Skolas. After... 15 attempts, I think, we got Skolas down to a sliver of health, and then we died and gave up.
Back when there was content and they didn’t take content out for money
They literally took house of wolves and Croats end out of the main game for money...
@@billsackett2218 where? I’m playing crota rn?
If only they kept the Menagerie in the game and iterated on it like they did with PoE. Instead they just keep selling us half-assed mediocre knockoffs only to take it out and sell us another one.
@@vohbe before launch, the two dlc’s Crota’s end and House of Wolves were originally supposed to be in game at launch but were removed and added for dlc for monetization
@@Vidicara but they’re in the game now so if dosnt matter in d2 they’re actually just removing raids and PLANETS forever
I still remember the SYLOK THE DEFILED ear rape memes, damn those were the times.
Anyone else think that unkillable screeb looks ALOT like what was in the trailer for next season?
The Screeb in the trailer was just a normal Screeb, but it looked massive because it was zoomed in and we never really see screebs that close anyway
Me too, Im just trying to figure out why they put it in the trailer. There must be something we are missing.
@@DrPorkchop-wt1wc the ship has scorn in it
16:00 and THATS why I loved harbinger so much when I soloed it. Wire rifles are just enough to break your shields, so you still have time to get to cover before you’re just dead. Nothing truly one shot, but nothing was weak. Champions were well placed as well. Only thing I wasn’t a fan of was match game, it severely limited my load out options
I agree that year one leveling was SO GOOD. I wish they stuck with it
I wish we still had leveling system made me feel closer to my weapons and exotics
I’ll always remember getting my first ever exotic from the level 28 POE chest... and it was gjallarhorn...
I was a bit late to D1 and the first time I played Prison of Elders I got Gjallarhorn, my friends went crazy and I didn’t realise the significance!
Love this game
The thing I miss most from D1.
I miss being able to lob a solar grenade just before POE started so when the boss appeared in the cut scene there was a solar grenade burning there. It didn't do any damage but was still fun to do.
I'm revisiting d1 and holy.crap I love how loot isn't just handed to you. You have to GRIND! It is good
those shits were actually so hard, and there was so many varying challenges as well. I can recall so many that were a helluva grind, the worst was this cabal boss that had a shield and like 300 ads, and at the end we all so relieved we made it through.
I remember year 1 feels like it was 2 years long, and it was so fun. I couldn't ever raid since I was 13 and all my friends didn't play the game.
That screeb at the end is the one from the season of the chosen cutscene. That screeb really is chosen.
Year 1 - Destiny 2
Season 1 - Red War
Season 2 - Curse of Osiris
Season 3 - Warmind
Year 2 - Foresaken
Season 4 - Season of the Outlaw
Season 5 - Season of the Forged
Season 6 - Season of the Drifter
Season 7 - Season of Opulence
Year 3 - Shadowkeep
Season 8 - Season of the Undying
Season 9 - Season of the Dawn
Season 10 - Season of the Worthy
Season 11 - Season of Arrivals
Year 4 - Beyond Light
Season 12 - Season of the Hunt
Season 13 - Season of the Chosen
Season 14 - Season of #$@)&@)
Season 15 - Season of $@$%#?!
Year 5 - Witch Queen
Year 6 - Lightfall
The blue awoken ship is still my favorite ship in Destiny
21:50 i had the vid closed in the background and this terrified me but i loved it. full throwback
11:43
The background music... its reminding me to these days..i think the soundtrack was called tranquility right?
I can clearly remember watching the livestream reveal event for this in class in high school
How is the scalable difficulty for PoE any different then the Legend, Master, GM difficulty we have now for Strikes, Nightmare Hunts, and Empire Hunts???
It's not. people just can't escape nostalgia
Didnt even need to see the hardest enemy, Skolas will forever live in my nightmares..
In my opinion, I'd like to see a new mode that takes heavy inspiration from PoE instead of just being PoE in it's entirety
The shader and ship at the end of the Skolas fight remain amongst my favorites to this day. Honestly miss them.
I remember I got Gjallarhorn from the chest, the next day xur sold it…
I had completely forgotten weapon rerolling in D1. I'm soooooo glad it's not a thing anymore.
Is that sealed vessel I hear quietly in the background? lovely stuff
Me and my best friend spent so much time doing prison of elders together, I wish I could go back
My first G’horn dropped from my first Prison run. Memories.
I still to this day have not forgotten the felling of beating Skolas for the first time.
22:35 I feel like you added that clip just to spite sweat since it took him so long to get Garry back
oh god the nostalgia. I remember grinding out the wolves chests and getting my Red Death for the first time. i always reset my hunter from level 1 to cheat the chest and get the free exotic. still never got gjallahorn
I really do miss the leveling system from D1. I get whey the streamlined it going into D2 but looking back I wish I could start D1 all over again.
Radiant Energy was from Crota's End. Ascendant Shards was from VoG.
It was Etheric Light that was used to bring weapons up to PoE light levels.
Players then:"Was this a game about story"
Players now: "Destiny story" KEKW
The story is pretty solid now

Man I remember not only the queens wrath event BUT key farming the week before the dlc drop AND getting gjallarhorn from the lvl 28 chest first run
Rip
Evan, the trick to the Arc/Void weeks was rerolling Efrideets Spear with Etheric Light to have the correct element and final round!
Prison of Elders + Challenge of Elders is my favorite activity in Destiny 1 and 2. I spent so much time in there grinding for weapons. I remember with Challenge of Elders my friends and I would try and get more points than each other each time and it was a blast and a half
i love the Mass Effect 3 ending theme you put in for the outro
You know this kinda sounds like onslaught but seems a little harder
This has to be the best video I've seen in a long time. What a good time it was thank you.
