The question is simple, the answer is much more difficult! Welcome to the Menagerie, a place made by Vicarious Visions and Bungie in June of 2019 in the Season of Opulence! The Season of Opulence is considered the best season ever made in Destiny history welcoming a brand new raid and of course The Menagerie! Today we answer the question many of us have asked ourselves, but couldn't quite answer... Why Was The Menagerie So Awesome?!

GET THIS MAN HIS 500 LIKES
Are we blind??? DEPLOY THE LIKES!!
They could’ve done so much with this activity if they didn’t sunset it. New bosses/encounters, quests, exotics etc.. my favorite “I don’t have anything left to do this week” content
So true
Really hope they bring it back, had by far the some of the best loot to actively target and grind where they would legit be worth it pretty much every time you ran it.
Absolutely
It couldve been a new core playlist tbh. Fantastic design just waiting to be expanded upon
@@logandraper yep, all they needed to do was swap what weapons could be found there. It would be a great place to "un-sunset" weapons bc you could target specific masterworks and all that. Too bad bungo once again missed a great opportunity.
For those who don’t know: Vicarious Visions is based in Albany, NY; and, for someone who lives about 15 minutes away, knowing that a bunch of Destiny content was developed here is pretty fucking awesome.
That’s the same feeling I have living only 30 minutes south of Bungie
@@fissilepear7805 I live about 20 minutes south of Bungie too!
Former VV heads went on to form Velan Studios based out of Troy. They developed Knockout City, which is a really fun team dodgeball game.
VV was one of the best things about D2 ... they did so much awesome stuff. Sad enough that we prob never will see some of their Awesome stuff in the Destiny Universe.
@@xalxfa Never is a long time. Contracts for companies are Always changing. Some approved, some are Not. I'm Hoping that when VV gets to the point of a new contract they decline it and move toward Xbox areas.
The "Legend destination" is the perfect place to bring back the Menagerie, i didn't have the opportunity to play too much pf it, but I absolutely loved it
That would be PoG
Would be cool since the leviathan wouldn’t really go in Nesus anymore since it’s out probably in the far reaches of the solar system
Well it would give us the chance for Austringer again. Wouldn’t mind that
Bungie will never be able to replace escolation protocol or the menagerie.... Seriously
They have the ability too, they just haven’t yet.
Already forgot about mars escalation protocol, they need a hoard mode again, like court of oryx, menagerie, escalation, reckoning, or Archon's Forge.
We're stuck with what...blind well for three years on a row?
LinktoFear Reckoning literally sucked lol
@@okruma625 ok, thanks for sharing.
@@WizenedCarbide altars of sorrow
I really miss the menagerie. Season of opulence was when I got back into the game for a little bit. The activity was fun, and the fact that you could decide what loot you got was awesome. I don’t know why Bungie refuses to bring back another system like it
Same season of opulence was my favorite season of destiny 2 and was in the best year of my life
Season of opulence will be remembered like gjallorhorn
Except they did bring it back, in sundial and other shit, players got annoyed cause it was the same shit over and over
Except they did and ppl were like “ItS MeNaGErIe 2.0 BuNgIe WtF iS tHiS sHit”
@@stuporman Season Of Opulence was straight trash, wow one MASSIVELY long strike that offers NOTHING to the story whatsoever.
You just keep making these masterpieces, amazing job!!
Are you a patreon or something. How did you watxh early. Just interested (if he even has a patreon)
@@fluke7506 he does have a patreon. You should sub!
@@jonathoncarranza4414 hmmm perhaps i should
heyyyy i know you
I’m watching because I started D2 after menagerie was over. So I wanna see what all the hype was about.
Same
there was a hand cannon that could reach crazy far, like prenerf 120 (austringer with eye of the storm and rangefinder)
there was basically an adored but way better (its called beloved, it could get snapshot quickdraw, no distractions, fourth times the charm, all the goods)
(thats all I know about really)
Wow. I'm legit shocked at how many newbies there are. I thought pretty much the whole community at this point was just old vets.
Bro how tf did you start the game at BL
There was/is nothing fun to do
You missed the best era of D2
It was awesome, but I can say for myself I wouldn't play it if it were in the game again now. It just left and could get repetitive. The Season was great, Menagerie alone was fantasic but like any seasonal activity, you can only play it so much.
Thank you for watching the video! I know the Menagerie was a place I spent a ton of time in! I hope I did the activity justice!
Yes please
Now talk about the history with shotguns in destiny
Because it was awesome end of story there was nothing like it in the destiny universe
Menagerie was better than any raid
only critic from my side
the triumph was about using 200 Runes in the chalice, so lik 67 chests with 3 runes not 200
When recommended comes in clutch:
the Managerie's LOOT was dank as hell
I have a near god roll austringer I held onto in my vault sitting there reminding me of the best time of year 2
If they reworked the nightfall loot system to work the way it did in the menagerie but with a weekly rotation of loot I would be beyond hyped for witch queen
One of my deepest regrets is coming back to destiny half way through arrivals and being too scared to go into menagerie since I assumed it was like a raid and I'd have to talk to people
Nope, from my experience no one communicated in the menagerie. Hopefully something like the menagerie will come in a future season so more players can experience it.
Menagerie was AWESOME. I just wished I did it more. Being able to target farming, it was FUN, and it allowed me to get Legendary Shards with little effort
You’re thinking of heroic menagerie, normal menagerie was just mindless fun with randoms
my friends told me it was very hard so i held off on it for so long and when i did do it i had no idea what i was doing and never really played it again
Menagerie will always have a special place in my heart because of how fun it was and the ease of play when my friends and i didnt have to try as hard as in a raid
An activity that actually Required 6 People lol. 6 People in Override Just seems so..overkill i guess.
Could’ve easily been 3 players and honestly would’ve played out so much more smoothly.
@@fissilepear7805 I have been alone in a lobby and managed to beat it alone. It is...a meh activity
I miss Austringer so much. Eyasluna was one of my favorites in D1 too. I really hope we get another like it soon.
The hole sunsetting is a joke.
I miss so much weapons on now with the grandmasters there a so much weapons missing when you'd like to match the mods. And you farmed them all in the past but you can't use them.
It goes everytime I play Destiny on my nerves
yackfou2412 The fact you can't seem to find any relevant weapons is likely your fault rather than the game's, since literally everyone else doesn't have a problem with this
@@yackfou2412 and with our current sandbox, so many weapons are viable again so it makes sun setting so much worse
@@okruma625 I believe that you haven’t farmed for the awesome godroll weapons, then sunsetting came along, and made those weapons be completely useless
Pestilence No sir, grinding for god roll weapons is one of my favorite things to do in Destiny. But go off and assume, I guess
You also remember that the artifact seasons were still in at the time, meaning the barrier that the hydra was in that it hides in could still be shot at, meaning it had no invulnerability phase if everyone had them.
I remember when me and my entire fire team used eriana’s vow, we had the boss down to half health before the first phase. 😂
23:10 "I say 6 because Drang only sort of counts"
Calus Minitool: *Sweating nervously*
i just loved every encounter of the menagerie
I want to see an activity where I can choose what I want at the end like the chalice it was so nice knowing I wouldn’t get edge transit at the end of an activity
it had Tribute Hall
the area where we could test weapons and builds
11:20 Ah yes, my favorite grenade launcher, *Telesto*
You mean fusion rifle.
@@AnthonyMartinez-fx8pr -that's the joke-
@@kalebdavis7080 Sorry, I missed it.
Evan: made a video to beat the heroic
mode flawlessly
Evan's tip: *STAY CALM*
Why?- target farming awesome loot
You gotta ask sweaticle when he's husbando is coming back so we get the menagerie back.
What?
Huh?
Sweat used to go to the leviathan a lot for using exotics vs [raid boss] videos
@@drgoodcat1826 he even has a Calus doll on he's streaming room you can see it on tge back lol
I remember school ending on the day when season 7 released and going onto Destiny at the end of school. So much fun in the menagerie and watching the day 1 crown of sorrow. One of the best moments of Destiny 2. I will forever miss season 7.
If they ever bring back menagerie I will be very happy
Dude thanks for making this! Keep up the work
Menagerie needs the "challenge of elders" treatment... I need it back in my life 😔
What about the Prison itself? It'd be nice for Variks to take up his old job and offer another training ground for Guardians.
Using the Mass Effect 3 "Leaving Earth" music at the end of the video got me right in the feels.
Your documentaries keep getting better and better! keep up the great work, you are literally killing it. You have become the (unofficial) Destiny documentarian
Hey Evan. I have not yet watched this video but I will get to it.
I just wanted to say that as a very new Destiny 2 player (Who is very much into the lore of games like WoW, Warhammer, MTG) finding your channel has been a huge awesomeness to me. Games are easy to talk about with the technicalities of how to play and what to do but you bring the player experience aspect into it with a very well executed production for the viewer. I just wanted to say well done. I appreciate your work and hope you know how amazing you are at it.
Peace. The A.C.E.
Only found you just recently but I can safely say you have the best destiny story telling and I love you content!, keep it up 🙂🙏
favorite story so far about my favorite activity of all of destiny
I have been waiting for this!! Thanks evan. Man menagerie and its triumphs were amazing. Doing uncontrolled rage and shit. I have all clips save still of flawless all bosses.
I’m choosing to believe this title was inspired by The Act Man, and I love it. Love the long form videos you dump so much time into. Keep it up.
Dude finally !!!miss your vids make them every week😍😍😍
I loved playing this with my mates, such fun!
Always hyped to see a new video in the feed! Love the videos dude ✌
These videos are amazing , keep up the good work !
Menagerie was gone before the introduction of the DCV. It was never going to stay past forsaken
"Boss Rush Mode" is already in and its the altars of sorrow.
that's 7 waves of ads and then one boss in the same arena. A boss rush is a bunch of bosses in either new arenas or one space in a row. Altars has weekly rotation of 1 boss per week
@@evanf1997 true but altars does have tht semi boss rush mode with the high yellow health bar nightmares (wizards, knights, ogres) we just don’t think of it as a “boss rush mode” Bc of the final nightmare being more boss like and the yellow bar nightmares I named above being a joke as per usual
evanf1997 Menagerie isn't a boss rush mode then by that logic, as it's 7 different "encounters" and then a boss at the end, like Altars.
Plus Altars has a rotation of different boss every day, that's 7 bosses every week. Source: just farmed Altars for the last week
@@okruma625 He never said that Menagerie was a boss rush mode.
I don't even play D2 anymore but I still love watching your videos. Another great one!
Thank you for your continued excellent content Evan.
I think, assuming they don't bring it back in the Legend Destination, as has already been suggested, one good Menagerie equivalent they could pull could take some inspiration from this Season. Specifically, the ability to forvefully enter Vex spaces using the Splicer gauntlet. Imagine that we get a call, an unknown but unusually potent Vex sim, perhaps located on Europa somewhere. We enter the sim, and it's a bunch of sims of various now-Vaulted locations and events, with those events acting as the equivalent to Menagarie's stages. They could be slightly modified versions of Public Events and Seasonal Activities that are now gone.
Imagine going from a single-tower variant of Escalation Protocol, to a slightly modified Contact, to one of the phases from the Sundial, and so on and so forth. The bosses could, in turn, be from some of these events, such as the EP bosses, etc, mixed with some original bosses for the mode. The lore of the mode could be us routinely enterring the sim to disrupt it, and thus prevent the Vex from getting useful data, with the original bosses being cornerstones of the sim, plus with a similar loot system that gives us some loot from those events and activities, mixed with some new originals for the mode to keep things fresh.
I think this would probably be the most likely form of such an equivalent so long as Bungie remain unwilling to dedicate either the manpower to make something quickly, or the time to make something with fewer people, as much of the work has already been done. A lot of the assets for the activities you'd be performing are already made up, with only some tweaking necessary to compensate for the different mode's rules. They've already got most of the bosses for such a mode, needing only a few originals, thus significantly cutting down on that workload. Finally, not only does the same apply to the loot, but minimal editing is required to get the Chalice-equivalent working - change the item, slightly alter the UI, change the currency it works with and the rune-equialent, and then make a few additionaly changes to seperate it from the Chalice.
You always go above and beyond to make incredible content, that’s what I’m talkin about! Great work bud!
Thunderlord video when? As a veteran player trying to explain to my new light friend what destiny was like back then, I’ve been showing him a lot of your videos to get him up to speed, would be nice if you could make one on thunderlord so I could show it to him
Amazing and targeted loot
Fun encounters
Just the way the chalice worked in general with the upgrades and such was so good man
RIP this amazing activity
Watched all your videos at this point of time, there isn't a single bad one, Good job!
Dude Managerie was and still is my absolute favorite time in Destiny at least for me, and I still remember I missed the first entire week because we didn't had internet but when I got my internet back, man I grinded so much and it was the best time I've ever had in Destiny, and my favorite was also the gauntlet.
And the Austringer was and still is my favorite hand cannon in the game
Such a great period. I even have an Austringer(or two, can't remember) and Imperial Decree in my vault that I don't plan to shard.
Came back to destiny 2 after a break and started grinding menagerie and tribute hall for them to get sunset like a month after, didn’t know it was happening
They should bring back Calus in witch queen and a version of the menagerie but different encounters and maybe different weapons and amour and if we kill savathün there should be a secret area in the menagerie like in the final encounter
Maybe a taken version? That would be awesome
@@edgieststalker8141 different think of that thanks for saying your idea
Definitely didn't notice the Act Man reference, love it.
The menagerie was that gopod that i even called my in-game name menagerie. I don't know if they can ever do anything as good but I'm glad i got to play it from day 1
I farmed this activity so much during season of the arrivals and the season of the seraph. I really wanted my god roll beloved but I never got it in end. I could've probably gotten it before sunsetting, but when I heard that sunsetting was coming it kinda ruined my passion of the game and trying to farm good rolls on some guns. So I just ended up taking a break until beyond light came out. The Menagerie is what Dares of Eternity dreams to be.
It was awesome because you would have a different thing each time. It wasn't the same every time it was always different
And even just being able to pick you loot. Even if the activity was the same every time being able to pick your own loot would’ve menagerie amazing regardless. But the fact it had both different activities each time and you could pick your loot made it perfect
@@benfranco7233 yeah. I got the absolutely perfect beloved from it. 5/5 perfection. So sad its sunset now
It wasn't always different, the order? Sure, but the encounters? All the same
@@okruma625 like the encounters rotated so it wasn’t the same encounters the whole time
Ben Franco they had the same gameplay is the thing, they rotated, sure, but that didn't really mean anything besides "oh cool that's the first one" and then you do it normally
Got that royal blue Atraks tee! Thanks for the reminder!
This just made my frown smile I remember this legendary activity
I visited vicarious visions when forsaken first released and saw the menagerie back when ppl were still fasinated with the last wish raid. I had to just wait until it came out.
Menagerie was THE activity, whenever I was done with everything I had to do for the week and had nothing to do I just played it, even I had no reason to but I still enjoyed it.
12:17 That armor is nothing short of magnificent.
I just loved The Hunted... Bottom tree Sunbreaker, warmind cells & Riskrunner for all the arc melees from the thrall
What made the hydra boss so much easier is that when we got anti-barrier mods you could damage the boss through its vex-cube-barrier-thing. You didn’t need to do the plate mechanics.
Thanks for the great video
8:50 I was legit scared to see one walking down the hall. It was so much fun
We need more content such as Menagerie, as well as prison of elders.
As something to note for Evan, which seems that maybe D1 wasn't in the playbooks, The Arcborn was a mechanic from Wrath of the Machine, the Rise of Iron raid. That's how you opened the raid, so seeing the mechanic reused in here was a nice little throwback.
Match made - raid like content - target looting - and most importantly A LOOT GLITCH!
I loved that glitch! So much running I had to put my stompies on!!
I remember back in opulence I got Astrocyte Verse from the treasure maps before my friend who was a warlock main
The chests on the ship were not opened with imperials, you paid glimmer to open them and they would drop imperials and runes.
About the Gauntlet glitch: A version of that glitch still existed up until the Menagerie was vaulted, although I don't know exactly how it was triggered. I only started playing with Shadowkeep and remember that happening many times.
literally bring back calus and the menagerie with changes that summed up all of the previous activities in destiny 2 and mash them all together to make a hosh posh of aliens and challenges to complete in the deepest slate of the underbelly till we end up back in the trophy room to destroy a fat last boss and get some sweet gold loot
Those bloopers were awesome
The riposte was my favorite, once got a sentinel shield to last the whole encounter using doom fangs
I live for these vids…. They’re the best
The Leviathan is just a planet sized ship that’s pogging now that I think of it
I think I've only ever witnessed one Mockery run where we finished it before the timer ran out, ONE!
That Gael theme though! Love it!
Small correction: for Shadow, you needed to slot 200 RUNES, not open 200 chests. It only equated to like 70 runs (which is still a lot, obviously).
I think a less talked about reason why menagerie was so good was because you could fail it. It sounds weird but the ability to fail brings a subconscious feeling of pressure and more value to your loot. Unlike override of course where you could solo it.
You couldn't fail Normal menagerie, it'd eventually take you to the boss no matter what
Master on the other hand...
As a player who didn't start playing till season 13, i really appreciate these historical deep dives. I played loads of d1, so I'm kinda sad i missed these activities and events, it's like my Guardian has a big amnesia about all this!
Honestly one of the best destiny creators out there and free advertisement for evervese
LMFAO
I remember one of my first destiny experiences was going into the menagerie completely blind as a noob and being carried
"want to approach the boss with tractor cannon? yeah, good luck" *proceeds to use tractor cannon on the boss and survives*
Yesss my absolute favourite destiny content creator!!
video on.. Izanagi oof I remember getting that I took a long break from the game and when cross save finally became a thing, I was finally able to play my PS4 legacy account (the extra dialogue knowing you played the first destiny) on PC. so went exotic hunting then.. just to have one of the keys needed to open the box in the quest step broken and not working.. \o/ and when they fixed it, it got nerfed.. I cri
I never finished Leviathan, but getting some Menagerie loot was my dream.
It always makes me happy to see an Evan f notification because I know I’m in for a great video.
This could have been part of the core playlists honestly
Not only did the Menagerie have great loot combined with one of (if not the best) loot acquisition systems in the game, but it also had a great atmosphere. Callus may be a dangerous megalomaniac with a god complex, but I always enjoyed him hamming it up while we blew everything up for his entertainment.
I wish they'd put all the phased out 6 man seasonal activities into a playlist, where you're given a choice of three different activities to vote on to play each round.
Maybe instead of a loot focusing thingy, there could be a currency that's used like spoils alongside the normal chest(s)
I want the Tribute hall :,(
I know it's mostly useless(kinda) but it was so cool!!
Bring the leviathan(ship) and all with it back
please bungie!!
The Chest-Race became a mini game of its own. Even after the boss was defeated, you had an additional way to compete with your teammates. It was a final piece of fun for the event that was rewarding in and of itself. The Menagerie was fun, and the race for the chest was fun even if it was unintentional.
Boss rush would be awesome. Especially with my crown splitter and curiass of the falling star
Let's see how the dares of eternity activity goes
I would kill to do this again, its just so awesome.
I really miss the zoo. It was such a fun change of pace. I remember having 20 Austringers and 10 Beloveds before I got my god roll, and the shotgun on the first try lol. I really hope they make something as good as this again.
its funny how everyone forgets about the vex ofensive that came right after the menagerie, he didn't even mentioned it when comparing it to the sundial and override lol
Gaels theme was a nice touch
