  • Butterfly Swimming Technique - How to swim butterfly. Side and front view. Sign up for our free online video lessons and learn how to swim: www.swimtechni...
This video was presented to the viewer as an online reference and a free example in order to provide a visual explanation of how to swim butterfly. If you just started learning this stroke, you might need some advice to make the process a little bit easier.
First of all, there are two kicks while swimming butterfly: the first kick occurs during the catch phase and the other one during the finish. Make sure to keep legs together and move both arms at the same time. Second kick is usually performed stronger in order to help arms fly above the water.
Second of all, keep in mind that butterfly is the hardest stroke in swimming and requires power along with good flexibility in shoulders. Work on your biceps, triceps, abs, and lower body (squads and jumps) as well as increasing flexibility.
Last but not least, come back to our swimming channel time to time and watch our butterfly swimming videos to improve your technique. Still have trouble learning it? Try to go with drills first and then put all the pieces together for swim. If you have any questions / comments / ideas about butterfly swimming, feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help you.

I start swimming when I was about 4 months old but even though I have been a good swimmer over many years (I am not trying to show off before anyone says anything) but one day I want to take part in swimming competitions so I went to the adult swimming lessons yesterday for the first time in years everyone are different but the butterfly stroke is one of the most challenging ones but just like everything else... practice and you will understand it..... I am still practicing on it (that is why I am watching this) but you don't have to be perfect.... just learn the basic steps and then just keep practicing :)

Wow, this video is awesome. I am a freestyler and am falling behind greatly in my other strokes. My coaches have always told me that my butterfly form was by far the worst, but i haven't completely understood the ways they were telling me to do. This video was a definite help. So glad i saw this! :)

We are glad to hear about your success! You are right there are two kicks in butterfly swimming. However, the second kick has to be stronger in order to help arms get out of the water easier and make them fly over the water rather than dragging them on the water. The first kick is just a supportive one.

Reverse dolphin swim: I developed this fun stroke over the last 10 years just by trying something new. I do it with the fins to get enough force and speed to get me out of the water for air. My daughter is learning it now. She is 10 years old and she is having a lot of fun doing it

Your 'second kick' needs to happen slightly before your hands pull past your legs. Demonstrated perfectly in this video. Novice butterfly swimmers often wait too long to initiate their second kick and thus suffer from incorrect timing. I have found it helpful in telling my swimmer to start their second kick as they are beginning to pull.
Thank you SwimTechnique for this fantastic video!

Congratulations! There are a lot of tips but the main one is always work hard and don't look at anyone. Carefully listen to what your coach say and do a little bit of extra (extra underwater, extra speed, even sometimes extra yardage). Good look on your swimming journey and don't forget to come back and watch Swim Technique TV videos as those will help you start swimming faster too.

I like the forward head shot on the stroke. You can really see how the hands pull and then push the water back. It's tricky for me to get the rhythm of the stroke right. It gives me a sore back... so I've tended to shy away from it.

I did butterfly at a meet a week ago, and I was recorded while I swam. I compared myself to the swimmer that made first place, and let's just say I need a LOT of work.
I often watch the recording so I can study her technique, and from what I saw, she didn't come up to breathe as much as I did. Does it make you faster if you don't come up to breathe as much? Another question: My arms looked very sloppy when I swam because I was so tired. How can I keep my arms nice and tense, while still having a decent amount of energy left?

    • @SwimTechniqueTV
      @SwimTechniqueTV  9 лет назад +4

Thanks for sharing your experience. Usually less breaths the better as breathing takes time. On the other hand, without oxygen muscles get tired faster. You need to find the perfect balance for you, however, we recommend to breath every other or third stroke on the hundred fly.
Your arms might look sloppy because there's not enough support from your lower body (strong second kick that supports your arms and help them to get out of water much easier). In general, butterfly is a very hard stroke but if you utilize the power of video and analyze your technique weekly, you can improve your technique and speed fairly quick.

Great video! Thank you! One thing I was going to point out though is that you seem to enter a little close out in the front. If you notice the footage of you swimming straight on your hands enter, pause, spread then catch. If you enter a little farther apart you could get to the catch faster and speed the stroke up. Just something I noticed and not tying to be mean. Any swimmer can take a pointer thats why Im watching this in the first place because I need the help myself! Thank you!!

Its been 4-5 years since i have properly timed myself in long distance sprints.. But il tell you whatever i know.. Earlier - 25 m freestyle -12 sec. 50 free - 31 sec. 100 free - 1: 04. 200m free - 2:10.. Every other stroke was a few seconds more since freestyle was my fastest... Now my timings in 25m free are 14sec and 50m are 35... Working on that, will slowly move to other strokes and distances n time them too..

Keen Observer dang (before I say my times I will say I've swam for 4 years and that I am also aware I'm a bit on the bragging side) I'm more of a distance swimmer btw 200m free-2:14 200yd free- 1:58 200m IM- 2:33 500yd free- 5:18 400m free-4:45.99 800&1500 I have times but they suck because I've only swam those once and kind of leisurely 50m free-28.68 50 yd free 25.11

    Now then...
This video does not show what is a real challenge of the butterfly stroke, that is the breathing part. You easily lose the momentum when you emerge to catch the air and any semi pro swimmer knows what I am on about.
I taught myself to swim a full butterfly stroke and I am able to do 25 m with 6 strokes without breathing.
Any time I try to emerge, say every second stroke the glide is hampered and instead of doing the length in 6 strokes I need at least 8.
Would love to see your full butterfly that includes the breathing part.
Brilliant video and the swimmer as well.

Aw, man. This isn't right making us feel bad like this. Do you know what this guy looks like, compared to us trying to do it??? 😢

+mariideen The point of the video is not to make anyone feel bad about his/her swimming technique but simply to demonstrate the ability of human body. Nobody is great at butterfly at first but through learning and hard work anyone can achieve success. Thanks for watching the video!

SwimTechnique TV sorry about that! I was actually being facetious 😊. I do think a side by side, him vs. those of us just learning to do fly would be hilarious.
That said, I am doing much better, just need to master breathing now and not get so tired! My favorite thing today was to scull the way he does before a length and then push off the wall. It gets frustrating at times but I do love swimming 😍
      Thank you for your video!

Thats awesome! Make sure to always use two kick per stroke in butterfly. The first one during the catch phase and second one during the finish phase. Second kick should be a little bit stronger!

You are welcome! This is a good question. Yes, in butterfly you should use two kicks per one arm stroke, it's more effective. However how powerful each of them should be moderate by swimmer, you have to feel comfortable and more effective.

I noticed the freestyle arms and butterfly legs but haven't seen that before. I'll have to try that.

your shape was on 🔑 key and your arch shaped back was just perfect for the motion of fly. I'm a competitive swimmer for T.Y.S and butterfly is my best stroke. yesterday I had a meet and I got second but it was open and I was racing a boy who was 15 so I thought I did pretty good👍👍👍

Your back really shouldn't hurt. But it is normal for your feet to drop if your timing isn't right. Which could cause backpain, but it really shouldn't be an intense pain. I use two kicks per stroke, wether I'm doing a one-arm drill or not. But that's just how I learned. I was taught to make an hour-glass shape when I pull down, which was why my timing was off. You SHOULD make an hour-glass shape, but it will happen on it's own. :)

@lovelovelovelovegod Thank you for you question! If you`re pretty flexible, you can try placing your arms a little bit closer on the catch just like the swimmer on the video. We found it very helpful. However, if it slows you down and hurts your shoulders, you might wanna stick with your current technique.

Well, 7 strokes after 15 meters underwater... :)
I thanks also the cybercoaching in swim. I had no school at that and I challenge who wants to fly - needs energy but not so tough as propelled - a beautiful style, most relaxing, I'm 38 and I learned in two months.

Hi there, some weeks ago I asked about dolphin kick.
Well, always I feel unsure about if I'm doing 1 or 2 kick.... today I was training mixed (3x100) progressing and in the last one my 25 butterfly was so good that I could really felt 2 strong kick!! It was so good for me. Thanks again for your video

  • @cellphonegaming
    @cellphonegaming 12 лет назад

After a while you can "count" your strokes, based on your dolphin kicks. I believe the dolphin kick is KEY, otherwise your "count" will be off. I started off picking how many kicks before surfacing and then counting to the wall for the turn. After a while, you don't think about it, yet I'm still counting automatically.
    Crazy how that happens!
