Matt, I live up in Northern British Columbia, and I have a small 135 gal pond I have built on the stairs outside my basement suite. It started out with comets/goldfish with a few big Plecos too, but by the end of the summer, I had about 8 10 Angelfish out there too. I have 3 300w Eheim heaters in there, and monitor temp with a digital thermometer closely. In very late fall * about two weeks ago this year) I drain most of tank, capture angels and plecos, and bring them inside to a 135 gallon I have just for them. I refill pond, and over a week or so, start turning the temp on the heaters down and down till it is off. With the bubbler running, it is all the rosy minnows and comets need. The white comets start turning grey as soon as the temp starts going down . The fish are all pretty spectacular to watch all summer. And WHO woulda thought Angels as an actual pond fish???
I’m a customer of Matt’s, this guy and his team are legendary. Always greeted with a smile and time to talk about my set up always happy to answer questions.
brilliant. Thank you Fish Shop Matt. My Grandfather used to breed and sell angelfish and he is the one that nurtured my nature love for nature and also the aquarium hobby, so angelfish alway remind me of him. Big love from 'across the pond' in the USA.
My angel fish died this weekend after about 2 weeks being in an aquarium with 2 blood parrots. I only had one of my 2 filters set up at the time. Maybe it got bullied. I don't know, but I really appreciated your species topic on angle fish. Thank you Matt.
Matt would love to see "biotope" or area specific videos where you highlight fish/plant/inverts from different places and what the " natural " habitat looks like. Also what fish do well together for the best behaviors. Lolz
Iv got right into the hobby think iv watched every one of md's videos and same with yourself learned lots between yous. My house is full of reptile tanks but now getting taken over by fish tanks haha ♥ 🐠. I'm going to be needing to get me some of his merch.
Great species spotlight! I have a pair of angels (male and female and occasionally spawn) in a 66 gal with Corydoras and glowlight tetras. It seems a happy balance.
Awesome video's Matt! You and MD got me back into the hobby and on the hunt for a community for my tank. Used to have a Red -Tailed Black shark, would love to get your opinion how to include that one in a community. Greetings from The Netherlands!
Thanks for this one Matt. My Koi angels keep spawning and making a total hash of it - 4 times now, so it's good to know they take time to learn. Now if they succeed next time, heck knows what to do about babies in good sized community tank. My Guppy babies all end up in the filter ( it's a Cleair sump system tank)
I feel like I just walked into the shop and got everything I needed to setup a perfect angel aquarium. 🎉 thanks for being great at your job/passion/hobby!
Totally true, back in the day of silver sharks, common plecos and clown loach they were in everyone's tanks! I guess we have access to so many cool species now I think everything is less popular than it used to be.
Thanks Matt! Great advice, I've got two pair a angelfish and they have bread many times. But they are terrible parents. They eat them everytime. Maybe one day they will figure it out.
Greetings from Maryland🇺🇸. Thanks for such a great video. I love Angel’s!!! I must say, your recording and editing techniques are coming along quite nicely!! Bravo. It’s also awesome to see more of your personality and sense of humor coming through in your videos😁. Of course, your knowledge is outstanding (as always). Keep the videos coming, Matt!!!🐠🌱🐟🌱❤️
I was thinking about my first tank and thought maybe angels. Thanks for the info! Never realized they get as big as they do so maybe something else to start.
Great video Matt. You have become one of my top fish tank spots. Well, i only watch you, MD, and KG Tropical regularly. Love it. Keep'em coming, please. Can't wait for the next.
I would like to keep angel fish, but i think my 100L is a bit on the small side for a group of 6 or more. I would like a 240L or larger but i also intend on moving house, it was hard enough moving the 100L when i got new carpets. I guess i will have to wait :( I like these deep dives into a particular type of fish, very good info for future reference! Thanks.
Hello! I was wondering if mixing different angels would be ok? I’m wanting to get two panda Angel fish and 1 black Angel fish. Originally I was going to get just three pandas but now I kinda wanna mix it up a bit.
Another great set of info for Fish Files and Angles is an awsome subject as they are usually bought as a starter because Ohhhh Lookie. Angles are a great fish and fairly good second type or branching out starter fish. Again with the even vs odd numbers thing. Probably a geographic to era thing. I almost always started small angles in groups of 7 (Odd indeed) and as they grew and/or paired off thinned down to just a paired off couple. Only thing I would say is that if you are going for a medium size tank 45g/170l or smaller make sure the store will either give you credit for or just take back some of them as when they start getting to big or picked on/bullied it is best to, well, start a new significantly larger tank or return them. But best for a new home. Thanks Matt as always. Looking forward to the next. Just an FYI. I am totally awesome at not knowing a thing at all about shrimp.
Absolutely spot on! I think the shape always attracts people to them. I've certainly heard the odd number or even number theory, I've never really bought into it to be honest. I'll try my best to get a shrimp one done soon! ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome video Matt, Angelfish can get HUGE when looked after! You should do a video on freshwater loaches. My less aggressive golden chinese algae eater might need a pal but wondering if I should get another species of loach as they tend to fight their own species!!
Thank you, they do tend to be quite territorial. I would probably look at a group of peaceful loach species to go with it. You may find if you add a singular loach they will just fight until someone is victorious.
Loving your videos so much. Would absolutely love you to do a shrimp files / a special edition Neo Caradina fish files maybe 🙏🏻 your fish shop is very lucky to have you , keep on smashing it 😀. Rachael , Oxfordshire, (boyfriends account!
@FishShopMatt. I’m new to this aquarium thing, having inherited a tank with an angelfish and four other fishes a couple months ago. I’ve added 4 more angelfish without issues, and numerous tetras, as well as gotten rid of the icky plastic plants and planted it instead. Knock on wood, all are doing well. My question is… what kind of plant have you put in the top back left of the tank? I would guess a peace lily, but I don’t want to put anything in that will harm my fish! Thanks in advance!
I had two baby Angelfish that were fine in the community tank until they grew up. One started bullying the other so it was rehomed. The other Angelfish seems to be happy living on her own with the other fish & doesn’t seem to eat their babies (she is well fed).
Awesome video! Came from MD fishtanks to you :) Im thinking of getting a group of Angel fish in my Aquarium (265L, 55 height, 40 deep, 120 long). Would that work? I guess it will be way to small for the group once they get adults though? Would rummy nose tetra be good schooling fish for them? I have cardinal tetras in my tank now but they might be snacks..
what sort of plants would you do for the set up, I've got giant vail wanting to get thin vail and I have amazon swords? would that be adequate? also i'm wanting to put 4 or 6 in with congo rainbows and rummy nose would that be ok in your opinion ?
I wish i knew half as much as you do Matt. You’re a hive if information. Whilst working today i went into a house and they had a tank of Glofish Tetra. They were under blue light. They were really impressive, some glowing green, some red. They were amazing. Are they common in the hobby as ive never seen them before. Keep up the good work, on and off RUclips
Thank you that's very kind of you to say. Glofish have varying popularity depending on where you are in the world. They are a genetically modified fish and this can be done to a few different species. In the UK I believe they are still illegal to sell or keep but I think there are a few loopholes. I'm not a massive fan of GM fish, but everyone has their own tastes and that's what makes the hobby awesome! ❤️
Hello from Minnesota, I love how you haven't a script, just the knowledge from years of experience. "Free swimming" lol, got it! I would love to see a fish file on the Chinses algae eater, my fish seem to turn either bright yellow or dark green whenever they feel like it, sometimes half and half, why?
Thank you very much for this Matt. I'm planning on returning to the hobby after a long break and am considering keeping angels again. Although you covered suggested numbers, you didn't specify a tank size. I have a Juwel Rio 125 and would like to keep a shoal of neons (mindful of their size!), a few angels and some top and bottom dwellers - any suggestions as to species and numbers please (with the exception of the angels I prefer smaller fish)?
We don't have a fish shop here in northern NY. I had to order mine that I had. I did get a pair out of the 6 I bought, but they ate the babies every time, out of the 4 times they bred, before my hip arthritis made me have to sell all my tanks. The angels I got were very skittish, and darted off in all directions, everytime anyone approached their tank. They never outgrew that, and I don't know why they were like that. I always thought that they were perhaps bred and grew in huge ponds, and had never seen people, or been in an aquarium situation. Any thoughts on that? I'd like to have a tank again, maybe one I could manage, a small one perhaps, and only one, not the 6 big and small ones I had before. Off topic of angels, I also bought a few bristle nose plecos, Who had no problem breeding! I absolutely loved those little guys! I had 6, some albino, and some dark ones. Have to say, they were my favorites, of all my fish. My babies were mixed, and adorable! Anyhow, sorry for the long reply. Loving your videos, thank you. And your collabs with MD also have been great!
Sorry to hear you had to downsize, at least you have all the wonderful videos on RUclips to watch. Angels normally aren't too skittish, I've seen confident fish become skittish before due to loose eletrical current in the water. Other than that it may have been a issue with how they were raised before you got them, like you say kept in a pond with little to no human interaction. That's awesome you should definitely get an aquarium, let me know how you get on! ❤️❤️❤️
Hey Matt - I wish you'd do something in these fish files on how to avoid breeding, or which fish to get if we don't want babies! I personally don't want livebearers because the cannibalism you always get bothers me, and I don't really fancy ending up with a load of Angelfish fry either... but all the channels seem to regard breeding as a good thing, when for a hobbyist with limited space who wants a peaceful tank it can be a nightmare.
Peacock gudgeons! I just got 3 and then all of them died mysteriously. So far the internet has left me empty as to why. They were really fun for 3 weeks and i would have assumed they were healthy... But I'd love to try them again providing I know how to not kill them. Maybe do something on diseases and disease prevention? (As if you need more content ideas) Either way thanks for the fun videos!
Thanks Matt! I've got a group of 9 sealpoints in a 55gal (220ish liters)? They were babies when I purchased and are getting good size now at about 6months old. Signs of breeding soon? Is this tank large enough for that many as adults? Zero signs of bullying so far. Dennison barbs, dwarf chain loaches and panda Garra's seem to be good dithers/distractions for them.
Amazing! Seal points are very cool! I would see how your group matures in theory the bigger number you keep the less aggression you will see. But it totally depends on the attitude of your dominant boys. Hopefully you should see them pairing up soon. ❤️❤️❤️
It's such a tricky question to be honest, with great filtration, lots of plants and regular changes you could probably get 20 or more in there. But the more you have the easier it is to get it wrong. ❤️
I know this is like a year ago now, but what size tank would you recommend for a group of 6 angelfish? I have a 240l 4ft tank 18 inches or so of depth with the not including the substrate..would that be suitable?
how do you have so many angel fish in thank tank at 12:00 ? I was told angel fish would need a minimum of 10G for each one otherwise it will be overstocked and will die
I have a question about Angelfish My Panda Angelfish I got from my LFS died but my pair of Bolivian Rams I bought on from a seller on ebay Sep 26 Paid Sep 26 Shipped Sep 28 Delivered are still thriving my question is why would my Angelfish dime size die within 2 days ??
Personally depends on the setup. Some frozen foods can be a bit dirty and release nitrates and phosphates into the water. For a bigger fully planted aquarium these will be used up quickly by the plants. In a smaller aquarium or one where you're suffering with algae I would defrost and net it in.
Would you recommend keeping them solo? It seems like that would avoid all of the aggression issues, but some say they're a social species and prefer to be in groups
We enjoy WATCHING, Matt! Yay angelfish!!!!
I'm glad you enjoy it ❤️❤️❤️

Oh my. I LOVE you, Matt. Please don't EVER change. The Fish Files are excellent. Spot on. Thank you so much. (Maybe something on Bristlenose plecos?)
Oh also, what is the plant growing out of the top of the discus tank???!! It is lovely.
Hey 👋
Thank you! ❤️
The plant is a peace lily (Spathiphyllum)

Totally true, back in the day of silver sharks, common plecos and clown loach they were in everyone's tanks!

Another great video mate. Loving the fish facts. Have angles myself so good to learn a bit more. Keep em coming matt.

I’ve always been wary of Angels due to how “different” they look and behave but they truly are beautiful!
Yeah you were right to be wary 🤣🤣🤣

Is this tank large enough for that many as adults? Zero signs of bullying so far. Dennison barbs, dwarf chain loaches and panda Garra's seem to be good dithers/distractions for them.
Amazing! Seal points are very cool! I would see how your group matures in theory the bigger number you keep the less aggression you will see. But it totally depends on the attitude of your dominant boys.
Hopefully you should see them pairing up soon. ❤️❤️❤️
Lol the thumbnail 😆
🤣🤣🤣 made me giggle!
Will you please answer a question? How many neon tetras can I put in a 60 liter tank Aquascaped tank?
It's such a tricky question to be honest, with great filtration, lots of plants and regular changes you could probably get 20 or more in there.
But the more you have the easier it is to get it wrong. ❤️
I know this is like a year ago now, but what size tank would you recommend for a group of 6 angelfish? I have a 240l 4ft tank 18 inches or so of depth with the not including the substrate..would that be suitable?
Hey Matt, any chance you could do a Geophagus fish file covering the different varieties?
Yes I'm tempted to do a species file where I do a overview of a family group rather than an individual. I'll see how I get on with it! ❤️❤️❤️
how do you have so many angel fish in thank tank at 12:00 ? I was told angel fish would need a minimum of 10G for each one
otherwise it will be overstocked and will die
Love your content Matt, can you do a fish file on fancy goldfish or ricefish?
Thank you and they're incoming!
Love
❤️❤️❤️
I enjoy it Matt cool informative keep it up ,, and I like you better than MD the guy that bully you and making fun of you any way good job mate 👍

Matt. Any chance of a “Fish” files on African Dwarf Frogs ?
Hi I’m wondering if you could keep 2 angelfish in a 200 litre tank. Does anyone know?
Weee finaly a new Fish Files
More to come! ❤️❤️❤️
What’s the Best way to add more Angels to a tank of adults?
It's tricky, but I would always recommend adding in groups. That way the juveniles can group together if they feel stressed or threatened.
Matt a question frozen food feeding defrost it or just toss the cube in the water and let them munch on it ? Love these fish files keep them going :D
What is that plant growing out of Discuss aquarium?
It's a peace lily (Spathiphyllum) there is also some cuttings of Swiss cheese plant (Monstera) mixed in but these are few in number.
