- Sorry for going AWOL, but my boy is now six weeks old and I feel like I can get back into this RUclips thing!
Massive thanks to all you guys and girls for sticking with me and subscribing to the channel. This episode, as you probably have guessed, is on the small peaceful cichlid: the Ram.
They are a really good community fish for your aquascaped aquarium, as long as you meet their requirements.
I've got some awesome new products, a few more videos on planted tanks and an amazing new aquarium that I will show off as soon as MD Fishtanks releases the build video.

I added a group of Bolivians to my Amazon tank this weekend. I have one old lady Bolivian left over from a group who had mostly lost her colour, I thought through old age. Within an hour of adding the new ones in she's coloured up brighter than I've ever seen her! Lovely little fish

Love rams! I had a beloved Electric Blue Balloon Ram and had it for more than a year but suddenly had hole in the head disease. Broke my heart when it passed away. It had a alot of character and responded to my taps that i learned from MD.

Thank you for confirming that I can keep my German blues at 78°F!!! I’ve been nervous after reading so many places saying it needs to be 80 at a minimum. Others have pointed out that after so much time being bred in captivity that they should be fine in a slightly lower temp.
Great video. Love Ram's cichlids they are my go to fish species. There is another great little pleco that goes well in just about every smaller community tank and that is the CLOWN PLECO. Never had major issues with them. You should really do a video series on the Pleco's in the trade.

Matt, I'm coming over from MD's channel, and I'm so glad you're a youtuber now! Really good video - I like your content/information, your presentation style, and of course the fish! As someone who sits on their ass all day watching youtube videos, could I offer some notes? Upgrading your microphone and sound quality will go a long way. I like your graphics, text, and b-roll, so you can definitely up those as well. It feels like some type of elevator (sry, "lift") music would do well. Can't wait to see what else you upload - Cheers!

You remember that I told you about my gbr's that were breeding? Well after the first spawn they never spawned again and while I was on vacation my male died. Now I have to wait another month on a new gbr fish-delivery in my LFS. And also have to deal with the age gap between the new male and the much older female.

I have three Bolivian rams, great little fish and full of character! Not as colourful as Rams but still neat!

And perhaps a video of shrimp? Even if it’s called fish files. I’ve been struggling with my shrimp tank (every time I het new shrimp, they settle in for a month and typically breed. Then after the first month I usually start getting a death per week…)

With your shrimp they may not be getting the elements they need. Check your water chemistry and compare online to what the species you're keeping requires.
It maybe a food issue where they aren't getting enough of the food they need, with this just get a specific shrimp food from a reputable company.
Or lastly it maybe a slow poisoning issue where a heavy metal or something coming from your water is slowly poisoning them. With this have a look at Arcadia poly filter as you can run it in your filter and it will change colour depending on which pollutant is present.

Matt, the information is generally quite good. I have to add something which is fairly minor but may be of interest. Rams are not blackwater species, they are found in shallow clear water streams in the Venezuelan llanos lined with palms. There might be some colour to the water, and the accumulated palm frond litter is colored a shade of orange or ochre. The air temperature in the dry season reaches over 32˚C so the water temperature is also very high. I originally kept mine with my apistos at pH 5.5 and 25˚C but they didn't thrive until I moved them into a tank of their own.
Just added a couple Bolivian Rams to my tank that has already Pearl Danios in it, so great video Matt, just the info I needed.
Loved the video as always, would love to see a Fish Files video about Apistogrammas, I am particularly interested in the cacatuoides triple red variant but would love to see a video on them, different color variants, lots of visuals and care tips

Thanks for your gr8 content Matt, and keeping it real!! 😊 please could you do one on Bolivian rams. Such an underated fish in my opinion. Yes not as vibrant as their eastern cousins, and look pretty drab at the fish shop. Once aclimated to your tank though they are awesome. Theyre less demanding than GBR and grow bigger. Ps: belated congrats on ur new addition to the family. 🎉

Lemon tetras. The Rams are golden and German Blue. My most recent order was the German Blue Rams but I think I got the Bolivian Rams. I wasn't to mate them up but before you know it there's another deceased fish 🥹what to do .

Welcome back. Very nice presentation on Rams. Very informative and entertaining. I have not had good luck so far with German Blue Rams. I read alot about poor genetics due to poor breeding to sell fast. Hoping to have better luck in the future.
Thank you, what you need to remember is there will be hundreds of companies/people breeding rams and some will be stronger and more looked after than others. It's just finding that decent supplier.

I love my rams. It took me a bit to find them. I have a pair of German Blues in a 40g breeder with a dozen red eyed tetra in a heavily planted scape. My ph is as high as 8.2 and they are doing awesome.

Great content. You should do companion videos to MD’s videos where you go into details on the fish he chooses. That is an area of his content that is a bit lacking and you have a real gift for explaining.

I'm in the U.S. and been in the hobby since the 60's. In the 70's I added what was supposed to be a pair of Bolivian Rams (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) to a South American themed community tank with a temperature of 78F/25.5C but they didn't last long. They might have been wild caught. But you just confused me stating that the German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) can be kept at that temperature. But yet all the information points to 84-86°F/29-30°C.
Just wondering if I can actually be successful keeping the German Blue Ram at a temperature of 78F/25.5C?
I really love those little guys and just not ready to setup a high temp Discus tank LOL.
I've had many customers keep Rams at a lower temp absolutely fine.
I personally think it maybe the whole discus thing creeping into the ram world of keeping them at those high temps.
You've got to remember that rams are being bred all over the world and probably in many different temps and phs.
Again they are a sensitive cichlid but find a good quality strain from someone you can trust and you should get along fine! ❤️❤️❤️

I am watching aquarium videos like crazy as my family and I are getting ready to take the plunge back into the hobby after decades away. We are hoping to get a 75 gallon (280L) tank. I would love to have almost all the tank mates you mentioned to a couple pair of Rams. My choice right now for a center piece fish are Dwarf Gouramies. Wish me luck and I would love any advice on setting up a new 75 gallon freshwater.
