Exciting day today. Set tank up just over a week ago and been doing testing and letting my real plants get going. My water has been low PH and tannins from the bog wood making it like weak tea. Despite boiling and soaking the wood for two weeks. My first tank for ten years and the Harlequin Rasboras were my first choice. Got 12 today and 3 Corys. The PH has stabilised now. Our tap water is just over 6.2 ph but today my tank water was 7, hopefully the coral I mixed in the sand substrate has started working. Now will be keeping a close eye on the levels and ready to act when needed. My tank is 110 litre Jewel Primo. I’ve added a sponge filter today to give extra filtration. Added good bacteria before getting the fish. I’ll be a bit obsessive at first while I know it’s all going well. I do love the Harlequin rasboras. Corys too. Next time I’ll be getting another 3 Corys and Cardinal tetras. I’ll be glad once I’ve got through this early stage.

Harlequins are indeed great fish. A decent sized shoal are a delight.
They are colourful in thier own way: not the vivid neon blast - a bit more subtle than that. A good sized shoal in a well planted tank will only get better: those subtle colours will develop a richer intensity. And the original colour variety is still the best: the new stains haven't done anything to improve on that in my opinion...
They are peaceful... and adaptable to a wide variety of water parameters within the acceptable normal ranges... bulletproof does describe them well.
Providing them with the optimal conditions that suit them best will always show them at thier best.
The quality that I love the best about them? They are confident to the point of brazen! The ideal dither fish: they actively move all round the tank - totally happy to be out in the open... right at the front glass of the tank. If you have problems with shy fish refusing to come out... these are what you need!

They were my first fish choice in my newly cycled tank. I’ve got 12 and they are so enjoyable to watch. They are adapting well to my soft tap water. Mine are quite immature so not up to full colour yet and not very big. Getting on well with the Corys that I’ve added. They like the plants that are growing nicely. Very glad I chose these little charmers. I did read up on them and was aware that they are a good first fish.

I guess I've been really lucky with my 5 Black Harlequins, I've not had the intention on breeding them and I've literally everything outside of optimal conditions for breeding and they've spawned maybe three or four times since I got them in January this year when I setup my 120L tank, 7 - 7.4 pH water, a small group (but they seem to shoal nicely), very open scape and no "leafy" plants, just a big row of Limnophila Heterophylla at the back (actually bought online from my local Maidenhead Aquatics), sadly, the adults have immediately ate the eggs each time so I've not had any fry but maybe some day I'll setup the tank better (or get a breeding setup) to accomodate successful spawning.
Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the Ram Fish-File as I plan to get some for my 200L soon ish once I've have a chance to redo the scape 😅

The females flip upside down to lay eggs on the underside of broad leaved plants. I had seen the behaviour in my planted community tank when I used to keep them, though never saw any frys. They are lovely fish, blackwater does magic to their coppery hues.

My favourite shoaler. I currently have 12 in my main tank and love how they look in a heavily planted aquarium. I enjoy how they aren't constantly shoaling but seem to pick their peak times during the day for a good old synchronised swim around.

As a fish shop guy from 32 years ago I'm happy to pass on the crown . Iv been watching MD since the shed following George Farmer since PFK forum day's when he was deployed with the RAF . I am a massive fish geek back in the hobby because of RUclips and guys like you . I have mixed feelings about the rise of Maidenhead aquatic on the hobby but in the new climate I believe it's been for the best . I use Dobbies Carlisle 64 mile round trip but worth it

Great work again Matt. You are becoming a youtube staple. The information you share with us is fantastic. The African tank MD and yourself worked hard on is looking great. I have 2 4ft aquariums in my lounge, where is my tape measure. I wonder if an 8ft tank will fit 🤔 keep ip the great work

Matt, I like how you say "Peace" at the end. It sounds just like Lucas Bretz's sign off (LRB Aquatics Fish Hoarder - RUclips) Nice job you're doing on this channel, I've got to go back and binge watch 'em all. Love your collabs with sivadcram (MD LOL)

@@danm8004 LOL that's MD's email address which HE himself shows on his about page. Also George Farmer did an interview of Marc on his channel and calls him by name to which Marc (MD) light heartedly objected that "people aren't supposed to know my name" To which George rebutted "Like 'sivadcram' is so hard to figure out" So I didn't dox him. If I'd said Marc's phone number and address, that would be doxxing. You're welcome! 😂

I'll be honest I don't watch many other RUclips fish channels other than MD, but I just went over and watched a few of Lucas's videos and I see what you mean. I suppose really it's quite a common word so will get used quite a lot.
Thank you for your kind comments ❤️🐠❤️🐠

I have lots I love and would love to see, but think it would be very interesting to learn more about puffers and brakish water. I would so love to keep them in the future, a kind that would be happy in about 200 liter 🤔🤞
