Great to see you getting comfortable on camera - looking relaxed and humorous, man! Saw MD's post with your wife - exciting times coming soon with the baby:) Wishing your fam the best
Exciting day today. Set tank up just over a week ago and been doing testing and letting my real plants get going. My water has been low PH and tannins from the bog wood making it like weak tea. Despite boiling and soaking the wood for two weeks. My first tank for ten years and the Harlequin Rasboras were my first choice. Got 12 today and 3 Corys. The PH has stabilised now. Our tap water is just over 6.2 ph but today my tank water was 7, hopefully the coral I mixed in the sand substrate has started working. Now will be keeping a close eye on the levels and ready to act when needed. My tank is 110 litre Jewel Primo. I’ve added a sponge filter today to give extra filtration. Added good bacteria before getting the fish. I’ll be a bit obsessive at first while I know it’s all going well. I do love the Harlequin rasboras. Corys too. Next time I’ll be getting another 3 Corys and Cardinal tetras. I’ll be glad once I’ve got through this early stage.
A perfect fish for the black water aquarium, any asian gouramy aquarium deserves a scool of Harlequin Rasbora. I must say that my favourite is the Tr. espei with the slightly smaller triangle but way more red colours.
I had a shoal of these. Till I did a water change one day and shocked them all.😢 used to use the outdoor hose to fill my tanks and that water was too cold. Live and learn
I'm so glad I watched your video. I'm setting up my first 20 gallon standard aquarium. It will be planted and Harlequin Raboras are one of the fish I want to keep. Thank you for all the information on the species. Gina from across the pond in the USA.
Harlequins are indeed great fish. A decent sized shoal are a delight. They are colourful in thier own way: not the vivid neon blast - a bit more subtle than that. A good sized shoal in a well planted tank will only get better: those subtle colours will develop a richer intensity. And the original colour variety is still the best: the new stains haven't done anything to improve on that in my opinion... They are peaceful... and adaptable to a wide variety of water parameters within the acceptable normal ranges... bulletproof does describe them well. Providing them with the optimal conditions that suit them best will always show them at thier best. The quality that I love the best about them? They are confident to the point of brazen! The ideal dither fish: they actively move all round the tank - totally happy to be out in the open... right at the front glass of the tank. If you have problems with shy fish refusing to come out... these are what you need!
I own a Landen 30 gallon rimless aquarium. In my opinion the aquarium is worth the extra money. Harleguin Rasbora are going to be the next fish I purchase. I already have Golden Blue rams and panda Cory catfish I think these Harleguin would be great tank mates. Great info and video. Well done
Killed it again, Matt. As one of those guys that wants to see more rare fish videos, I fully recognize the importance of what you’re trying to do in giving people the deep dive on the basics of fishkeeping so we have less people trying to keep a betta or a goldfish in a teacup. @@FishShopMatt you’re such an adorable lad!!! I could literally listen to you talk about aquariums and fish all day! We also need MERCH! :) keep up the good work Matt!
Looks like everyone has gotten comfortable in the African tank. Nice action in it. BTW, you've talked me into harlequins. Don't know why I've ignored them before
They were my first fish choice in my newly cycled tank. I’ve got 12 and they are so enjoyable to watch. They are adapting well to my soft tap water. Mine are quite immature so not up to full colour yet and not very big. Getting on well with the Corys that I’ve added. They like the plants that are growing nicely. Very glad I chose these little charmers. I did read up on them and was aware that they are a good first fish.
These were the first fish I ever kept when I started the hobby many moons ago, they will always have a special place in my heart ❤️ Loving the content Matt keep it up!!
It would be cool to see you cover Celestial pearl danios! I just got 16 of them in a 40g breeder and I'm really enjoying them. Thanks for all the great info! Cover anything, I'll still watch it.
I guess I've been really lucky with my 5 Black Harlequins, I've not had the intention on breeding them and I've literally everything outside of optimal conditions for breeding and they've spawned maybe three or four times since I got them in January this year when I setup my 120L tank, 7 - 7.4 pH water, a small group (but they seem to shoal nicely), very open scape and no "leafy" plants, just a big row of Limnophila Heterophylla at the back (actually bought online from my local Maidenhead Aquatics), sadly, the adults have immediately ate the eggs each time so I've not had any fry but maybe some day I'll setup the tank better (or get a breeding setup) to accomodate successful spawning. Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the Ram Fish-File as I plan to get some for my 200L soon ish once I've have a chance to redo the scape 😅
Really under rated fish. Have mine with purple emperor tetra and beckfordi pencilfish and panda corydoras and bn plecos. I love them. Also love the lambchop rasbora just a harlequin in smaller form. Beautiful little fish
@@FishShopMatt thank you. I was wanting to add peacock gudgeon. Or would u recommend against it? Not kept them before so not sure how it would affect the community tank balance
